ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW SOME STRENGTH

Here's the scenario. We have some MUSLIM pirates holding an AMERICAN merchant marine captain hostage on a small boat off the coast of the ungoverned country of Somalia. There's a nuclear powered American guided missile destroyer nearby. A show of weakness ... in other words, no action ... will encourage the MUSLIM pirates. What do you think Obama will do? Perhaps he'll be flown out to the destroyer so that he can deliver a symbolic bow to the pirates from the bridge.

By the way ... isn't this what the Navy Seals are for?

This is the U.S. Guided Missile Destroyer keeping an eye on the Muslim pirates. This is the old one. We'll leave it up as extra ship pr0n.

What others are saying

  • So Funny!
God's Motive - (Name says it all). You may want to reconsider my motives since I'm a Naval Officer of nearly 23 years and just spent a lovely deployment fighting pirates, you disgusting loser. And this is my second war too. Serve much?

And I'm a libertarian, whose never voted blue in my life. Red always.

CowboyUp - Yes, yes, I know the history. I also know that we are living in an entirely different world now. We can just go "cowboy'ing" in to save the day anymore. Various US Titles specifically state our capabilities and responsibilities. We have to be asked otherwise it is illegal intervention in capitalist activities. We are not my grandpa's navy but a much media followed, ever under the microscope navy now.

As for the U-Boats, please revisit your history. The Navy was indeed the main component standing between our merchants and them, however we also took HUGE losses in ships and personnel in doing so. Final counts were pretty horrendous and politicians and society rightly re-considered what kind of things need that much loss in American lives. Silks for dresses that a few people get rich on..not so much. Vital metals for munitions manufacture...you betcha! Of course, they weren't pirates that could be taken out with a single shot either but dangerous U-Boats. Very different.

My other point remains..and if you haven't been on a bridge trying to make the decision knowing that a CNN crew has eyes trained on you from another vessel, then shut up and pull your head back into your shell. A small move can lead to weeks of media outrage, leftie screaming and budget cuts that hamstring future operations.
  • "Pirates"
This "pirates" nonsense is just a politically correct way to describe typical Black/African thugs, just like the ones in Atlanta. What total bull.
  • Pirates, terrorists
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostis_humani_generis
  • Info
We don't have any nuke powered surface ships left with the exception of the aircraft carriers.

But more importantly let's be real about this. This is a huge story about practically nothing. A bunch of thieves got onboard what must be one of 10,000 ships on the water. The Navy can't protect that, nor is it really useful to put deck guns on commercial ships. That ship you see's main job is to protect the aircraft carrier, shoot down airplanes, and launch tomahawks.

If we were truly that worried about this we've got some patrol craft that could do the trick with the right guns onboard. The realistic thing to do is negotiate this guys' release, arrest the punks right afterwards (or kill them, whatever). Then next time you intel the area next time one of our merchants goes through, then have an F/A-18 use it for target practice with a 20mm cannon.

This could even be another use for a predator drone.
  • Muslim pirates
Glad to see you good folks saw the difference between the 1963 USS Bainbridge (DLGN 25) and the 2003 USS Bainbridge (DDG 96). Small potatoes for most but a rather big deal for our heroes that did, or are willing to, give their lives to protect your rights to freedom. Thanks for the quick correction.
  • "Nuclear Powered" guided missile destroyer
The only ships in the U.S. Navy that are nuclear powered are submarines and aircraft carriers.
  • ahh mmm ahh
settle down now people, this is a civil matter and ahh mmm ahh that is why we have ahhh mmm ahh agreed to subsidize insurance companies with ahhh mmmm ahhh more bail out finance...and ahh mmm ahh.. and as ay ahh resault of these actions we are ahhh I have deemed it necessary to raise everybodys taxes to ahh mmm ahhh 90% and ahhh mmm ahh the 16th ammendments says its ok so ahhh mmm ahhh what ya gonna do about it..?
  • Cowboys and pirates! Yippi-kay-yay mofo!
All US flagged vessels traveling through pirate waters should be required to be armed. Vessels over 1500 tons should have at least 2 Mk38 Mod2 mounts (same 25mm chain gun our Bradley’s use, the USSS Bainbridge has two), or better. They are relatively cheap, pretty easy to install or remove, require little space and power, are stabilized, remote operated, and very effective on anything under 2000 yards. With DU rounds it can punch through T-64 armor. Then put the message out, stay further than 2000yds from merchant ships off the Somali coast (or wherever) unless you want to die.

I like Q Ships, they are poetic justice, and making piracy a more dangerous occupation will decrease its’ popularity, but if you want to end a varmint problem you take out the nest. That’s why pirate ports are legal target ranges.
Sounds like damifino heard how the KGB quickly stopped the kidnapping of Russians in Beruit after just three kidnappings, and at the cost of one Russian life. They understand the terrorist mentality, in no small part because they trained most groups’ original cadre.
Christy ACB, the first 6 frigates built for the US Navy were built to protect US merchant shipping in the Med from the Barbary Pirates. I wonder if you would really be okay with armed merchantmen (nothing new there), or Exxon shelling Somali ports? It’s not an either or choice, countries can and have done both.
I notice you made no mention of it being an occasion to reduce Somali males to 10% of the population (males are 100% of the Somali pirates) and breeding the rest for docility (even though they are the poster children of all you claim to abhor). I guess that fantasy is just for American men like Neal, and the males from your admittedly “mythical 50’s.”
  • pirates
There should be only two responses when the US military shows up on your doorstep. 1) Thank God the Americans are here! or 2) Oh Sh*t, the Americans are here!.
  • Vote Yes, No or Present
Unfortunately for this late, once-geat country we have a president who will not take a stand or make a decision. Look at his Senate record. He is too busy campaigning as president of the World to protect American citizens.
  • Piracy
NCchik, piracy has been around since one man figured he could rob the boat of another at sea. Even the might of Egypt and then Rome was unable to end piracy in the Gulf of Aden. The British Navy came close in the 18th Century by applying the principles of “a short rope and a long bayonet” (the hanging of those pirates who survived the Royal Marines bayonet tipped muskets.) But piracy never totally ended. To claim that Obama is anyway at fault for Somali piracy which has been growing since the 1990’s is illogical. But let’s see if his response has been more effective than George W. Bush’s. Oh and Joe I am not a military man, but the term “suppressive and area denial capabilities” sounds good to me!
  • Rush Today
According to what I heard today on Limbaugh, piracy is an international crime against mankind. Google for more info. Why have these pirates not been eliminated? Obama sucks!
  • Cops: The Indian Ocean
All I can think about is the look on the knuckleheads faces when a heavily armed Naval ship rolls up( yes, I know, ships don't 'roll up' for the overzealous 'tekkies'...)and if there is any justice, the Cops themesong blaring over the loudspeakers. "Badboys, badboys, whatcha gonna do...?" I'd kind of like to see one hanged from a mast but I know it's not politically correct and the poor Somalis were probably just doing what the boss told them to. It could only be following orders if a real commander were in charge of real sailors, did I get that part right? How does this work, let's see..."okay, we're in a lifeboat, there's an American Captain we're holding hostage...that destroyer is hanging out and our mother ship is where? Can we call home?"
  • Pirates
Jake, shotguns are good for clearing the deck, but a few machine guns come in handy no matter what a pirate's religion. I think enough firepower is called having suppressive and area denial capabilities by the military guys.
  • Nice timing
Over lunch, I had a chat with a co-worker who opined and lamented the inability of a lightly-armed population to ward off oppressors wielding long-range missiles and remote-controled drones.

Your picture of the destroyer, which has all conceivable firepower at its instant disposal, creates a startling juxtaposition with the picture of the remaining pirates in a lifeboat (http://netnewsdaily.com/?p=1454) - where the latter, out of gas and adrift without supplies, is holding the former at bay with just the merest of threats.

Upshot: It’s not what you have, it’s your will to use what you have.
  • Navy Chief beat me to it
I was going to correct the photo and also what Neal posted about a nuclear powered ship since the Bainbridge is not nuclear powered... but another Navy Chief beat me to it!
  • White House Response
Staff writers are working feverishly to draft an appropriate apology
  • Scratch that Jake!
Just saw your next post!!! LOL

    Yep on the shotgun!
  • But Jake
Even if that's all true (I'll do some research) does that mean we should treat them differently? All I have said still stands as regards the Somalia Muslim terrorists.
  • Good Point
Oh and one more thing, Joyce M/Blythe - I agree with "Blow them out of the water". It is only the fear of retribution that ends piracy, just as a good shotgun ends a home invasion.
  • Putland & Piracy
Joyce M/Blythe, I have no doubt that some of the money is funneled into organizations who have terrorist agendas, but the general opinion of those who study piracy is that the money is spent by the pirates , payoffs to local governments, and regional warlords/protectors (such as in Putland). BBC did a great report on the lure of piracy in Putland and how it was driven by sex, drugs, and luxury items. Please be aware that most acts of piracy are for cash and material goods that are aboard the vessel and not for the hostages. Only in areas like Putland, where the local government is corrupt, can the holding hostages be successful. Last year there were 293 incidents of piracy (piracy is only a crime committed in international waters, in national water it is considered a robbery) or attempted piracy worldwide, 111 of these were in the sea lanes near Somalia (see the International Chamber of Commerce report on Maritime Piracy in 2008).
  • SEAL Team 6
How do we know that the SEALs are NOT in area? Ummm, I can see the announcement from the Navy- "Our anti-terrorist SEAL Team is underneath your ship right now, in their SDV's, so give up!" I say, that they are positioned and waiting to the go on the op. Let the negoiators do what they can so. If they can not release the captain, then we know who can do something later that night.
  • Ransom payments
Hey, do Pirate Captains count as Executives: we could tax their ransom payments at 90%, that'd stop them, surely.
    {oh wait, there're probably aren't any pirates named Shirley}

Better yet, pass a law making it illegal for them to buy ammunition: that'll put the kibosh on their shennagians real fast. Right.
  • ChristyACB
She seems to be new to the forum and new to the use of reason and logic. Matter of fact I don't think anyone on this forum is quite as stupid ....and considering copyleft and hugo that says a lot.

I can't even think of anything to say in rebuttal to her ascertion that the military shouldn't intervene in a capitalist venture (read piracy on the high seas)... her statement is so inane as to limit retort to simple pity for her obvious lack of brain function. No wonder Obama won. So many people like her who think "Change" is a policy and "Hope" is a legitimate government activity.
  • pie rats
who cares about which photo is showing. what we are showing is the yellow stripe running down to the vasiline smear on osamabamas other smile.

hell let the pie-rats go, sink the mearsk alabama. that will show those pork chop eatin stinking muslim bastards we mean bizniss.
  • Navy Chief
Well done. You've said all that needs to be said in the fewest words.
You can always count on a goat to get the job done.
How about giving some lessons to the Idiot-in-Chief?
  • Are the Pirates really Muslims ???
If they are, do they follow Islamic Law? Islamic law would require that a thief have his hand cut off. Do they get back to shore (or the Mother of all Pirate Ships) and cut off each others' hands ??
That would put a whole new twist in the term "ALL HANDS ON DECK" !!!
Seriously, the pirates are just poor starving souls from one of the poorest countries in the world. Somalis have no concept of, or ability to, establish proper Government for their country. This was the case in 1992 and it appears to have changed little in 17 years. Until Somalia can get some law and order and some semblence of a functioning economy, the most desperate will turn to piracy. All those ships laden with treasure (food, oil, manufactured goods, etc) just offshore is just too much temptation. Isn't it just human nature to take what you need, by force if necessary, rather than starve?
Of course, the prior theory is all hooey if the pirates are working at the behest of warlords and al-Qaeda and the prize is cash (from ransoms) to operate worldwide terrorism. In that case, kill them all and let God and the Devil fight over their worthless souls!!!
  • Vote "present"
I guess you can't vote present on this one.

He wouldn't even take question on this today from the press. The new motto must be "ignore it and it will go away".
  • Up the ante
Why is this so difficult? People don't want military intervention? FINE! Up the ante. The pirates want $3mill in ransom for a $100mill oil tanker? Offer a $6mill bounty for the delivery of 6 of them - they demand $10mill offer $20mill bounty for 20 of them, and so on try them for piracy, then hang them.
  • Jake
Listening to the show, Neal had a good point, even if these pirates are just doing it for the money, where do you think that money ends up???? And the majority of piracy right now IS extremist Muslim. The non-Muslim attacks are questionable if you follow the money. Where does it go? As was said, "they ain't building themselves any mansions with the money".

Blow them out of the water, I don't care.
  • Pirates
I know many will brand me as cold and heartless, but at this point, the life of the captain has to become, at most, a minor concern. Our primary concern has to be preventing such incidents in the future. That means killing the pirates. If the captain dies in the process, it is an unfortunate cost of stopping piracy.

I really do not care about the desires of MAERSK. It is their ship and crew, but it is not about them. It is about stopping piracy, especially against American flagged vessels, immediately.

Paying the ransom, or any other action which shows we value the life of the captain more than we value stopping piracy, will only encourage the pirates to take other American flagged vessels.
  • "The military does NOT interfere with capitolist endeavors. "
Re: Christy ACB "The military does NOT interfere with capitolist endeavors. "
    BTW, that's capitalist.
You mean kind of like how the Navy didn't interfere with US commercial coastal shipping along the Atlantic coast being sunk by U-Boats in the 1940s?
And, come to think of it, like how the USCG didn't interfere then either, right?
  • Pirates
The US response to this pirate attack on the Maersk Alabama is crucial, regardless of whether it was an Islamic Extremist plot or a simple act of Piracy. The enemies of the US are watching to see what the new leadership of the US will do. I for one am very concerned with the neutral-sounding remarks of Secretary of State Clinton, and the complete lack of comment on the part of the President. (He couldn't break from the script for a moment?) Black Hawk Down occurred in Somalia, and it was the pathetic Cut and Run Response of the Clinton Administration to the attack on our Soldiers in Somalia that spurred on Bin Laden et al to pursue further terrorism against the US, believing the US had shown its weakness. If we show weakness this time, if we fail another test, it could have devastating consequences down the road.
  • IT IS NOT ISLAM...alone
Piracy is not solely a “Muslim” problem, but exists were it is profitable for anyone to turn to the crime without fear of retribution. Piracy actively exists not only along the sea lanes near Somalia, but in other areas of the world. Pirates actively prey on the weak off the coast of South America, the Malacca Straits, West Africa, the coast of Bangladesh, and the South China Sea - all these are active hotspots. Even with the Somali piracy, many of these pirates operate in areas outside of the Jihadist controlled areas like the so called “friendly government” controlled coast of Putland. Please do your research!
  • Q-ships anyone?
I wonder if the navy has considered resurrecting an idea from the past--a Q-ship. Arm a freighter with some medium sized MGs (like 20mm or 40 mm), crew it with trained personnel, then disguise the weapons until the pirates are in range. After a couple of these brigands have become shark bait, the rest might be reluctant to close with any ship with American registration. You can even change the appearance of such vessels easily so the same ship does not app[ear to be the one that is armed. Cheap, effective, and with positive results.
  • Another opportunity...
The other Rick with a few comments after reading through those already posted -

Initials are actually BHO - Bend HUMBLY Over

This country's doctrine concerning this issue was well established early on and was first carried out on "the shores of Tripoli"

we might do well to refrain from wishing for military action from this administration in light of the results achieved by recent Commanders-in-Chief of this one's party affiliation

Don't worry so much. The Secretary of State has already issued a strongly worded and unambiguous statement to the effect that some sort of world action may be called for. It'll soon be OK
  • Fire Ants
Give the pirates the 10 million dollars...covered in weaponized anthrax or similiar. They'll take it back to their base, taking them out and anyone who associates with them. Just like killing fire ants.
  • MUSLIM pirates
    Four pirates holding one American?
    Easy.
    Four well placed sniper rounds.
One American and four snipers return to bar for round of drinks and some good laughs about a job well done.
  • Pirates
I was so glad to hear that the white house would closely monitor this situation and that Hillary was concerned. I guess I don't have to worry about this any more.

What we are seeing is a merger of the weakness of the Carter administration with the policies of the Clinton administration, less, of course, the dot com bubble to help the economy.

The pirates could keep the captain until a republican is elected again.

And for all those complaining about the photo, you are missing the big picture here.
  • the USSR solution
I may be wrong but I think the Old Soviets had the right idea in handling terrorist and pirates. What ever else you can say about them they didn't put up with any crap from Islamic terrorist and had very little problems with them until after the breakup of their states and economic woes(sound familiar? we are on the same path)The USSR would have even won in Afganistan if not for the US supporting the Taliban.Speak softly and carry a big stick works WHEN it is used and always has.
  • Was taking the ship back legal?
Before the US crew of the hijacked ship took the ship back from the MUSLIM pirates, did they first try to resolve this through the UN or did they do this unilaterally without the permission of the UN?
  • Time for the UN folks
Time to call the UN so they can say 'Bad pirates, bad-bad pirates, don't do that again'
  • Flying the flag
Our Navy protects any ships with our flag, that is part of their job Christy. Why would you have a problem with that?

Reggie, if the "law abiding" Muslims comdemn this kind of behaviour why don't they help expose these whack jobs? Not just in Somalia but even here in the US, if you know one of your fellow Muslims are planning something against us, then turn them in! Show you mean what you say. Until I see some of that, I don't trust any.
  • Q-ships
Can we bring back the concept of the Q-ship? A merchant ship with a whole lot of hidden firepower. They sail around waiting to be boarded and then ... they say pirates make great chum.
  • muslums/pirates
Here is how we negotiate with these bastards..."Would you like the bullet in the head or the heart."
  • Responding
"This government wants Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead." Ahhh good ol’ Teddy Roosevelt. Those were the days when governments knew how to fight piracy by taking their crimes to their front doors. Nowadays to respond against piracy with force is to face international condemnation, just ask the Indian Navy after they sank a Thai trawler being used by Somali pirates. The answer to the piracy problem is not only having navel patrols, but commissioning some old fashioned Q-boats (false armed merchant ships used as decoys). Pack a few 30-mm chain guns and 12.7-mm anti-material rifles aboard and when the pirates attack surprise! The other is to pursue the pirates back home and destroy everything that floats in the village harbor. I know that that can be seen as cruel, but most of these pirates are fishermen who turned to piracy for the profit (and no Neil not because of their religion). Sink the whole community’s fishing vessels and the signal will spread down the Somali coast like wildfire that you better make sure your village stops piracy before it can begin.
  • You don't need 4 Marines
You only need one......and a Barrett.
  • Oh this is getting Hysterical
    Christy wrote:
"Or do you want quasi-government sponsored money making ventures where ultimately, the military becomes the enforcement arm"

WHAT? So what your saying is that if the police come to rescue of a business, then local goverment now gets a peice of your business.

MeisterVT, so what your saying is that we should just keep paying them off and everything will be fine? Just the price of doing business in that area? Geeez! Talk about the price of goods going up.

Like so many other things in the world, some of you don't have the courage to deal with the problem. Lets say that we pay them, then what do you say when they start killing people to get their money quicker.

Some of you make me sick, as long as its not your stuff they steal, then its ok and we should find a peaceful solution. I have a solution, why don't we make the penalty out way the gain? Maybe convince them to, oh I don't know, work to make their country better? I don't know too many the U.S. has turned down if they really want help.

You want to stop this, then every time they send a gang out to hijack a ship, make sure that gang dose not return home. Trust me it won't take long for them to figure out that the price for the one way ticket is too high.

I hope I never raise my hand to another human being, but if provked I will defend myself vigorously.

    THIS JUST KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER!
  • The media's coverage
I didn't wade through all of the comments to see if this was mentioned, but you don't hear ANY of the main-stream media (big network or cable) mention that the scum whose holding the captain hostage are followers of the peaceful religion of Islam.

The nearest US Warship was 350 miles away when this piracy was taking place. I wonder if it is time to station an aircraft carrier nearby. It would be nice to hear about pirates getting blown out of the water by an air strike while they were still trying to chase down booty.

PS: I love the security code I got:PIRA8
  • Pirates
I was involved in the planning to take down a NK ship bringing arms to the middle east in late '80s. The first thing asked is "can we do this legally?" IOW get the lawyers involved. Turned out we could, but the ship ran into "difficulties" prior to its destination. We did, however, follow it all the way across the IO, just over the horizon.

Fast fwd to now. We (and several other countries) are wearing out very expensive ships and using large amounts of fuel for this mission. These ships are armed with the most expensive and capable afloat arms, all unusable against 3rd world thugs, armed with clubs in beat up boats. It's unbelievable we have allowed ourselves to get into this position.

My take (never get past planning for sure):
    - Pirates take ship
    - Air lift SEALS to ship
    - Kill ever pirate except one.
    - Shoot remaining pirate in kneecap.
    - Place wounded pirate in boat and point him towards shore.
    - Repeat as necessary.
    - Two weeks later, problem over.
    - All military ships return to normal operations.

Are we ever going to understand that these clowns only really understand a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

BTW, the SEALS train for ship take-downs.
  • Terrorists
Quick call the UN and ask them to save us!
  • Guns
Seriously... Um... what happened to the guns. I mean... aren't we supposed to have big ones on ships like that ;)

(yeah... I know... missile ship. The point is still the same.)
  • What about the Somali Mainland
A few bunker busters dropped in their major ports would disrupt their pirate operations...lets get serious!
  • Pirates
ChristyACB - as far as this ship being privately owned - the crew is entirely American. Does anyone wonder why a foreign owned merchant ship is flying the American flag, and has an American crew, which are more expensive? Also, according to news reports, the crew gained control over weapons bearing pirates without any weapons of their own. The report also states that the second in command graduated from the Mass. Maritime Academy in 2001, and was trained in firearms and small-arms tactics.

A search reveals that this ship is part of the maritime security fleet under contact since 10/1/2005.

The Maritime Security Program (MSP) forms the third stage of cargo support for US war operations. Vessels pressed into the programme form a "third-resort" fleet made up of US-flagged commercial vessels, which are paid subsidies each year to participate. If called upon, these vessels would become dedicated cargo carriers for a US war effort.

Looks like the pirates chose the wrong ship - or did they? Perhaps they are testing our anti-military president.

    As
  • Muslim Pirates
ChristyACB misses the point. The pirates are demanding jizyah(sp?) which is tax on non-muslims for being in their area and attempting to carry out trade (read: COMMERCE). President Jefferson sent the Navy and Marines against the Barbary Pirates (another group of Muslims) that were taxing the commerce in the Med. Between the Royal Navy, the (armed) U.K. merchant fleet, pirates became less of a problem until post-WW2 era.
Capitalism requires free trade which necessitates free and unencumbered ocean commerce. That is why Admiralty Law allows complete an total annihilation of pirates and their source without repercussion to the military or it's government. Pirates are a curse on capitalism (read: COMMERCE).
  • Reggie - you said "the acts of the etremist are comdemned but the islamic majority." I'm sorry but does anyone else hear crickets?
ChristyACB - First, one of the reasons for a navy is to protect merchant shipping. Second - this country has long advocated for the freedom of the seas, and using the Navy to aerate these pirates would be consistent with that policy. Third - it is the law that Federal Troops can't be deployed in the United States without the permission of the state in question. This helps to stop the whole dictator/military coup issue. Finally - the military always has, and always will be, the enforcement arm of capitalism. Would you rather privately owned and operated militaries, acting in the best interests of the investors and not the US? What happens when Sears lauches a raid on the local Macy's because they don't like the sale prices at the other store?
  • Navy's Mission
In answer to Christy ACB, the Navy's primary mission is to keep the sea lanes open, for both military and commercial traffic. What is the point of a military force if not to protect the interests of the US and her citizens? Oh and Reggie? You're an idiot.
  • US Navy's mission
What Christy?? The mission of the Navy has always been to protect the freedom of the seas. That includes protecting merchant vessels, whether they carry cargo or passengers.
  • Vote "PRESENT"...
We will just send someone over them to talk NICELY to them, they will like us SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much they will just release the captain. This administration is such a JOKE, and the bad part is they don't even realize it.
  • US Navy SEAL's
Neal - Absolutely; SEAL's are probably on standby and the Bainbridge is there to supply operational support (swim platforms and recovery ops); However can you confirm what I heard on FOX that MAERSK (sp) has asked that the US Navy NOT intervene? That, if its true, has got to be the biggest copout I've ever seen. MAERSK has a veritable fleet of ships, and ransoming this captain will bode ill for them. Let the Frogmen go, rescue the captain, keep your money and let the Somali thugs know that messing with US interests and citizens will not be tolerated. Oh, Wait....Maybe Obama will walk on water and "talk" to them about it....
  • Pirates
If Obama did anything to harm these pirates would he be singling out people of color? Need to go back to Thomas Jefferson. Apparently Obama's initials B. O. stand for Bend Over as shown in his bow to the Saudi king. Will the world really respect President Bend Over?
  • Neal, capitolism or military intervention, you decide!
    Neal,

First, the ship out there is a Gas Turbine powered destroyer. 4 LM2500's I believe and nothing at all nuke about it. Second, that is a retired ship in the pic..hello!

Also, this merchant vessel is just that: A privately owned merchant vessel. Capitolism at work. The military does NOT interfere with capitolist endeavors. Should the navy charge in and harm civvies in the process, the left would have a field day. We couldn't even go into Katrina zones until ASKED by the state.

So decide. Do you want unfettered capitolism and the RISK that comes with it? Or do you want quasi-government sponsored money making ventures where ultimately, the military becomes the enforcement arm.

    You decide.
  • Wrong Photo
    Neal,

Right name, wrong ship. You're looking for USS BAINBRIDGE (DDG 96); the photo is of USS BAINBRIDGE (CGN 25), which was decommissioned in the '90s.
  • International Law
I think they need to revisit the law that prevents a vessel from having arms to protect itself. This is getting ridiculous.
  • This looks like a job for
    ...a community organizer.
  • Minor Point
Minor point, but the only nuclear powered Naval vessels currently serving are aircraft carriers and submarines.

Really I think a good way to go right now would be "look, release him and we let you go. Kill him and you die. Refuse and the one place you won't be going is back to Somalia."

The only reason they haven't really harmed many people yet is that they know if they hold out long enough they get paid. Just outright killing them will only make future pirates of American vessels more apt to just kill hostages and then leave if it doesn't look like a ransom is being paid.
  • ship
Actually, the ship pictured is the old cruiser "Bainbridge"...It was stricken from the fleet in 1996. The current ship is DDG-96 (Arleigh Burke class).
But anyway, nothing will happen until a crew turns up dead, the ship gets burned to the waterline and its cargo stolen...Until then, it's only a minor inconvenience.
  • MUSLIM pirates!!!!
It seems you want to go in there to "Show our stregnth" but wouldn't the more important thing be to get the guy out ALIVE? Not worried about that as much are you. Now to you harping on this MUSLIM issue, it's rediculous and only inspires hate, There are MILLIONS of law abiding muslims and the acts of the etremist are comdemned but the islamic majority.
  • BAINBRIDGE
Fox News shows an Arleigh Burke class destroyer. Your pick shows the older Nuke Cruiser CGN-25. I would think that the CGN-25 had been decommissioned, but who know. I'll do some research. Either way, at least we're there. Both beautiful vessels.
  • Ship Photo
The ship in the photo provided is that of the "old" USS Bainbridge, hull number CG-25, which was decommissioned in 1996. The ship now confronting the pirates is instead the "new" USS Bainbridge, DDG 96, of an entirely different class (make/model if you will).
  • Pirate solution
    Four marines with rifles.
  • Teddy Roosevelt
We need a Teddy Roosevelt moment (specifically the Perdicaris incident) where Obama says "Return him alive and unharmed or we will have dead Muslim Pirates." No questions, no negotiations. Just a statement of fact. That is if he is willing to take this on.
  • Bainbridge
Neal, not being picky, but the pictured ship is the old Bainbridge, CGN-25. The Bainbridge that hopefully visit harm upon the pirates is DDG-96, a new Arligh Burke class. Sorry, twenty years of Navy service leaking through. Keep up the good work.
  • Pirates
While muslim extremism is a true and growing threat, I think in this case the pirates aren't capturing ships and kidnapping foreign crews to convert them to Islam or as part of a "maritime jihad". They're just pirates-chasing booty on the high seas.

Now, if only the US had some sort of elite commando unit who was trained to retake assets and rescue hostages. A group who can operate in sea/air/land.......
  • Was wondering about this last night...
As I was watching the television news report of the crew fighting off the Pirates and how their captain was being held ransom, I thought "How long will it be until US Navy Seals are giving these Pirates the Quick Weight Gain Program, ounces of lead at a time"?

Then I remembered who our Commander in Cheif is now, and it dawned on me the answer is probably going to be "Never".

RIP, America. Hello, Peoples Republic of Amerika.
  • Pirates
Obama will do the same as he did with the Korean missile, he will ask someone else to deal with it. He lacks the ability to make an informed decision to resolve this in any manner. Since he seems to think that the Koreans, Iranians and Castros can be 'talked' to as human beings, who is foolish enough to think that he will respond in any way shape or form? I am shocked that the destroyer has not been called back to port in America (or as I prefer, the USSA - United Socialist States of America). If any of you out there think that he will do anything to free the American citizen being held, you need to watch reruns of his American arrogancy tour of Europe.
  • Muslim pirates
Any independent/unilateral application of force by U.S. will unhinge PresBO's base. And, would show PresBO has a pair that Michelle didn't own.

Admiralty Law would allow any anti-piracy action without consequence. SEALs, Recon, Coasties, any and all military force of U.S. could do anything to these pirates AND THE VILLAGE(S)THAT SENT THEM without repercussion. That particular code dates back to the Spanish. . .and what religion did they throw out of their country after 300+years of overlordship?
