A MILEAGE TAX

It's been a while since we have heard from Minnesota Democrat James Oberstar. He has decided that he wants Congress to enact a mileage tax. Yep. A mileage-based tax on cars and trucks would help offset the fact that federal gasoline tax revenues are in decline. Oberstar doesn't want to waste time on pilot programs. He sees that as a waste of time that could be spent collecting tax revenue! He wants this passed now so that the government can start paying for highway program. However, a congressionally mandated commission estimated that switching to a vehicle-miles traveled tax would take a decade to put in place on a national level.

Here's the danger. Oberstar and his buddies in the congress would just love to have both the mileage tax and the present federal taxes on gasoline. They're talking tax increases here .. not just a different way of raising the same revenue. Oh how Democrats love tax increases. Oh ... and stand by for the program to prevent this tax from affecting the poor, poor pitiful poor.

What others are saying

  • I'll just pass it on to my customers
Neals right, there is no business tax, its all personal tax. If you tax my mileage I'll pass it on to my customers. Its a business expense just like the mileage deduction I take on income taxes every year. Besides I already pay over 40 cents a gallon on fuel now. This is just another way to steal from the producers. Just like when energy conservation is encouraged then energy rates go up because less energy is used which means less profits are made which justify higher rates to make up for the loss. JEZZZ IT JUST A ENDLESS CIRCLE(JERK)
  • over taxed..
So when did you say the next tea partys were going to be held..? Personally I feel July 4th would be nice its on a weekend so all of us whom still have a job will most likely be able to make it.the last partys were much smaller than they could have been..
  • Mileage tax
The present tax is an excise tax on the consumption of a commodity. A mileage tax would be a tax on the right to travel because the consumption of a commodity would not be the object of the tax.

In addition, the federal government has NO jurisdiction over roads within the States so they cannot constitutionally tax the people of the States to use their own roads.

The Feds could only claim jurisdiction over an Interstate road.
  • Hate the idea, however...
I hate the idea of any new taxes. I don't want/need any new services from the government.

However I will never put a government controlled GPS in my car.

I was on hold the first time Boortz brought this up for a long while, if this tax has to pass here is how it should be implemented.

A tire tax. Even green cars use tires. I would say brakes too, but green cars use magnetic breaking that doesn't wear down as fast as conventional pads. What all cars do use is tires. If you drive your car hard (causing additional damage to the road) your tires wear out faster. If you are a conservative driver then your tires last longer. Tires last on average about 50,000 miles. There is your new per mile tax that is evenly distributed among all types of cars and without the intrusion of a government installed GPS.

And as far as the trucking industry goes, they do more damage to the roads with their heavy loads than do passenger cars and should be paying more, and they would because they have more tires. I understand that that cost would be just passed onto us the consumers, but there are other ways to ship goods besides the trucking industry (rail, boat, plane).

But like I said I don't like the idea of the new tax, but if they are going to implement it, do it in a way that the tax is collected at the point of sale, not through some tracking/filing method.

Lets just say this is where the "Rubber meets the Road".
  • Mileage Tax - Great Idea!
I think a mileage tax, enabled by some sort of GPS-type transponder is a great idea. They can put them on their new little green cars. As for me, I'll keep my old pickup. It'd be a shame if the transponder thing, somehow didn't work just right.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a stimulus in itself. I can see some good ole GA mechanics setting up quite a business to "modify" transponders so they look just like they're working.
  • The right to privacy and personal freedom folks want in our cars.
If there's ever a mistake, and we know the government never makes mistakes, they just cut off your car 'til it's cleared up. Unless, of course, you've paid tribute to your local dp commissar.
  • I like the irony here
I can't stand Oberstar..more on that in a minute..but this idea has one saving grace..it sticks it to the green wackos and their fuel efficient cars..they actually would have to ...and I love this.. "Pay their fair share" to drive on the roads! Maybe just put a big tax on the "green" cars at purchase. Yeah take that greenie. Now Oberstar. As a Minnesotan I see this man's thievery first hand. He represents a sparsely populated area but gets ridculous sums of money (pork, he's gotta buy the votes to get re-elected ya know)for roads, bike paths, etc, that far out-strip the need there, to the detriment of the more populous regions of the state like the Twin Cities. They are essentially parasites in his region, I wonder what they'll do if they "kill" the host I.E. the rest of the state? Where will they get their welfare then?
  • As for the Tax Relief for the Poor Folk
They don't drive anyway because they can't afford the vehicle. No skin off their nose I suppose.

Government is double dipping because they are pushing people to buy cars that don't rely on the taxes they get from gas. They can't get the tax one way, they'll get it another. In NC, tax on gas is around 32¢ a gallon. I moved closer to work so I didn't have to get beat up so badly. I went from filling my truck two times a week to once every two weeks. I still would not get hit too badly if they pushed this, but the local, state and federal governments are starting to get my goat on all these taxes.

Oh, and don't forget the increase hikes in car inspections and vehicular taxes that were supposed to help pay for road projects. So, we get taxed to have a mechanic tell us it is ok to drive our car, taxed because we have a fully paid for car that someone can't make money off of other than us if we sell it (well, except for the money you made as income from the sale of your vehicle), taxed for the oil that someone else processed to run in our cars (as if the government would actually do something like work), and now they are going to tax us to drive on roads we already paid taxes on.

You know, I need to lose weight anyway. Think I'll start biking it to work.
  • Taxes, Taxes, Taxes
When will a lefty on here address their thoughts as to what will happen when the producers get tired of all of this and just stop? I'm not far from that point now.

I think we all know how it worked under Stalin but I'd still like it addressed.
  • Oberstar
If gasoline tax revenues are in decline, doesn't that mean that people are driving less? If they are driving less, that means people are not driving as many miles as they used to. So Oberstar's idea to tax mileage doesn't seem to me to generate the tax revenues he wants to generate.
  • not again..
this keeps comign around.. I want to tax congress for idiocy... every time a dumb idea comes out of their mouth.. tax their salary at 100%.
  • Test
Let's do a 5 year test in Minnesota. They aren't the brightest people in the country anyway...look at their former Governor and the fellow they may put in the senate...these are some seriously intellectually challanged folk. They won't mind being the pilot project host.
  • little by little, inch by inch
Crap like this gets on my nerves, this jackass should apply this to his state and see how it goes, the reason I say this is because of a little ignored amendment, it’s called the 10th amendment!!!
We need a tenth amendment commission to stop crap like this, let the liberal states do this to their own states and we can watch them fail.
James Oberstar has been in congress 34 years… Hmm… think he is out of touch? I think so.
Just like gaining weight, you don’t see it happening and don’t control it, before you know it, you’re obese… but when government implements these “little” taxes, it’s not really noticed until you get to the bottom-line and add up all these “little” taxes then you realize how much you pay (I mean the productive people pay). Taking into account, embedded taxes, fees, income taxes, state, local, etc…, of what I earn, just over 60% goes to government. Inch by inch, government is taking more; I think the democrats want to tax you to the point where you need to relay on government, because god knows how much they hate individual achievement. Punish individual achievement with taxes, glorify government dependence with welfare.
  • Unintended Consequences
    (1) I love the way this tax has a contradicting goal with what the environmental/warmer wackos have. Fuel efficient cars are the dream for the warmers. With this mileage tax, several already correctly made the point that there will be no motivation to purchase fuel efficient cars now. However, the new GM CEO's, President OBozo, entire plan for the auto industry is to produce more fuel efficient cars that no one now wants to buy, let alone after this tax is imposed!!! RESULT: Less fuel efficient cars, warmers lose out on this one!

    (2) If this tax passes, I guess more people will look to use public transit. If they do that, then simple logic tells you that less people will be driving, which means less tax revenues. When the revenues fall short, what other tax will the libs dream up to make the shortfall?
  • Dems are doing this?
I am so used to 8 years of repubs raising taxes that this is a surprise to me
  • No guts
So, we institute CAFE standards that make automobiles more efficient, but didn't forsee the reduction in tax revenues? And now, the statists don't have the guts to raise the excise tax on fuels, so they try to slide in another new tax without thought as to the repercussions of that. I'm sick of the Amateur Hour ...
  • Mileage tax?
OK, as long as they do away with speed limits. Then we won't need "Barney" out there with his radar raising this revenue.
  • Another government-induced problem
You want to know the reason gas tax revenue is down? It's because the government mandates that vehicles get better mileage. Therefore, the government mandates that less gas be used - thus reducing the gas tax revenues. It's not that people are driving less, but in general less gas is being used per vehicle.
  • i'm moving
i love this country, and i never ever said that i would move - the way that liberals always do when their candidate doesn't win (unfortunately they never follow through). but if they start with this kind of legislation, there's no room for me in this country. seriously.
  • Mileage Tax
So will this affect those traveling on public transit, such as buses? You know, the poor and the prisoners just reported about on Fox who are taking the bus from prison setting to prison setting? There will be your subsidy for their tickets!
  • Mileage Tax
Of course, we could divert money from entitlements for some to infrastructure for everybody. Just sayin'
  • Invasion of Privacy
"The tax would entail equipping vehicles with GPS technology to determine how many miles a car has been driven and whether on interstate highways or secondary roads. The devices would also calculate the amount of tax owed."

Doesn't anyone see what else this could be used for?
  • Limiting Freedon
The good way for a government to control it's population is to limit their mobility. USSR did it. I guess that makes it a good idea to some politicians over here.
  • Mileage tax
Would this apply to the trucking companies that deliver goods/products through out the country.
We all know that the trucking companies will just raise thier rates, meaning the purchases/retailer will pay more for the goods, meaning they have to raise the price of those goods.
Can you imagine the the cost of goods after they pass on this tax to the consumers.
  • Mileage Tax
Would this apply to 'over-the-road' truckers?
Man, can you imagine how much the cost of goods would go up as the tax paid by the trucking companies would just be passed along the cost to consumers as another embedded tax.
  • mileage tax
So now there is no benefit whatsoever to operating a fuel efficient car?

Also, if you think that the government is not going to use the GPS info for other things, you are in La-La land.
  • Dig DEEEP!
We gonna share the wealth as we drive.

There are only two ways to balance a budget: cut expenses ("right!") or increase "revenue" (remember, to the gub'mint, our tax dollars is "revenue").

They can't cut expenses, sooooo ...

    dig DEEEEP! Spread the wealth.

    BOHICA! Spread your ...
  • odometers
boy, how much money you can make if you started a business of racking the miles off your car. odometer specialist.
  • A mileage tax? It already exists.
As Neal points out, there are already taxes on fuel. How can paying a tax based on miles driven be better than one based on fuel consumed?

And if it is better at all, how could it be so much better as to justify the time, the expense and the invasion of privacy that such a tax would require?

There has to be another reason that the proponents aren't talking about.

Maybe this is just being floated out there so that our Dear Leader can kill something stupid.
  • Oberstar
This was the grandstanding jerk who grounded American Airlines down for a few days last year when he said that FAA inspections weren't tough enough. So, the airline had to go and duct tape some wires just for this idiot. This guy also was in bed with unions (I think it was the baggage handlers!) when he was opposing the Northwest-Delta merger.
