REVISITING THE CARTER YEARS

Yesterday I asked the question, how do you think Obama handled this North Korean missile launch. And with the exception of one candyass moonbat who exhibited an intense hatred of the U.S. military, most of you agreed that he failed the test.

Newt Gingrich compared Obama's weak response to that of the Carter years. He says, "This is beginning to resemble the Carter administration's weakness in foreign policy."

So who does look Newt to? Ronald Reagan. He says, "Reagan ... would have been much more skeptical about a plan in an age of North Korean, Iranian and Pakistani nuclear developments. How do you apply his slogan of 'trust but verify' in dictatorships you can't trust and can't verify? ... Reagan felt that keeping a defensive shield alive was more important than a paper deal. The Obama administration is rapidly undermining our missile defense system while describing a fantasy world of trust and cooperation."

And yesterday, just after North Korea launched a missile, our Secretary of Defense stands up and announces cuts to our military weapons program.

Every action an administration takes sends a message. The unmistakable message here is that the United States is weakening. On the very day after North Korea test-fires a missile with intercontinental range, Obama announces a cutback in military spending. He is expanding spending in virtually every segment of government - except defense. The one true absolute function of the federal government is getting shorted while social welfare programs are being doubled in size. Yeah .. we really showed those North Koreans who the boss was, didn't we? Not just the Gargoyle ... but every other country out there that would like to take advantage of American weakness. We are, whether Obama cares to admit it or not, at war with radical Islam. Nations like Russia and China are vying to become the world's dominant military power. The No. 4 military power test fires a missile after we told them to stand down ... and Obama announces a $534 billion cut our defense budget.

There's your change you can believe in, folks. A weakened America in a very dangerous world.

About 50 years ago someone wrote a book. Duhhhhh. The working title for the book was "The Strike." The author's spouse suggested a different title just prior to publication. Can you name the author and the book? You're right .. not much to go on here. Cogitate.

Just remember that whenever government says that a program is going to cost a certain amount, it is never ever going to cost that cited figure ... it will always cost more. In this case we are talking about the $700 billion TARP, which was originally cited to cost the tax payers $189 billion. But guess what? The Congressional Budget Office has raised its estimate of how much the tax payers are really on the hook for .. try $356 billion. That's just a mere $167 billion more than originally estimated. It is guaranteed to go higher.

By the way, TARP belongs to Bush, you know. The original intent was to purchase toxic assets from financial institutions so that they could lend again. Sure didn't work out that way. Another spending program that belongs to Bush is the Medicare prescription program. I wonder what the tab is for that now. At a minimum it is twice what Bush told us it would cost.

Maxine Waters is one of the most brain-dead politicians in Washington. Truly the representative of the dumb masses. Yesterday, she was complaining that Obama's Treasury Department isn't doing enough to help minority firms that want to help manage bailout programs.

Yesterday, the Treasury announced that it was extending the deadline to apply to manage the assets, it was loosening the criteria to evaluate applications and it was going to "emphasize the department's interest" in minority-owned firms participation.

But this apparently wasn't enough for Maxine, who says that the Treasury should be required to give priority to firms that include minorities and women as partners. Maxine says, "Even under the updated guidelines, the burden remains on minority- and women-owned businesses to find willing partners among a select group of very large asset managers who do not have a particular incentive to welcome their assistance."

Remember ... while we're trying to get ourselves out of this economic mess ... we have to make sure that not too many white men are involved. It's not whether or not we recover, it's who is working on the recovery.

A NATIONAL CYBERSECURITY ADVISOR?

Have you heard of the Cybersecurity Act of 2009? It has been proposed by Sen. John Rockefeller and Sen. Olympia Snowe. This is a bill that would give the president the ability to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" and shut down or limit Internet traffic in any "critical" information network "in the interest of national security."

Many questions pop into my mind. But let's start with one. What exactly is considered a "critical information network"? (Other than Nealz Nuze, that is.) Well ... that could include a lot of private sector entities like banking, telecommunications, utilities and others. But that will be up to the president to decide.

Now listen to this ... this bill also grants the Secretary of Commerce "access to all relevant data concerning [critical] networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access." Without any provision of the law?? There's that "rule of law" thing at work again. If this were Bush we would have Democrats screaming about warrentless this, that and the other thing.

And it establishes - you guessed it - more government! The Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisor that would take the lead on Internet security matters and coordinate with the intelligence community and the private sector.

Take a look at the bill for yourself ... tell me if you think this is benign, or if you think that we're looking at a power grab and intrusion into the private sector and your private lives.

Let's face it .. the guy just can't talk without a teleprompter. Every third word is "ahhhh." Now I know that I insert a few "ahhhs" and "uhmmmm" when I'm doing the show .. but this guy makes me look like Paul Harvey. At one point during his town hall meeting with Turkish students he actually said: "As I've said before ... ahhhhhh ..." Well, he had that one right. I also liked the line about "We have the responsibility to do things in a responsible fashion." Now that was a real gem. It's just tough to use a teleprompter at a town hall meeting. I hate that for him.

A quite amusing column from Iain Martin at the London Daily Telegraph. Here's the link if you want to read it yourself, but I may have to whet your appetite ... so take a look at this excerpt. He starts out with a quote from Obama in Prague:

"For over a thousand years, Prague has set itself apart from any other city in any other place. You have known war and peace. You have seen empires rise and fall. You have led revolutions in the arts and science, in politics and poetry. Through it all, the people of Prague have insisted on pursuing their own path, and defining their own destiny. And this city - this Golden City which is both ancient and youthful - stands as a living monument to your unconquerable spirit."

Empires rising and falling, destinies being defined and a Golden City standing as a monument to unconquerable spirit... goodness, what a ham. When he really gets going he's worse than Tony Blair."

Martin finishes with this line: "But I'll wager that within a year or so he'll be marked down as a wind-bag." OK .. not I gotcha. You're going to go back and click on the link, aren't you?

I'M GOING TO CHANGE THE WORLD

Do you remember when candidate Obama said that? Quite impressed with himself, he was. Not only was he ready to "rule" (his words) the United States, but he was going to change the world in the process. Now he had decided who should and who should not be brought into European Union membership. He's over there pushing for membership for Turkey. Some European leaders aren't all that happy with this. I wonder when Nicolas Sarkozy will head to the United States to push for Puerto Rican statehood.

But ...what the hell. I'm trying to change the world too, and the FairTax would do just that.

Our social security system is in a lot worse shape than most would like to believe. How bad are we talking? And don't say you weren't warned. Someday this government-operated Ponzi scheme is going to implode .. and it will be a much bigger mess than what we're dealing with now.
