WHY NOT, PRESIDENT OBAMA?

Did any of you catch Barack Obama's online town hall meeting? Yeah, neither did I. Apparently the way it worked was that you could submit questions to the White House blog, and then people voted on their favorite questions in different categories. And with everything that is currently happening in our economy and abroad, do you know what the most popular questions were? What is really on Americans minds?

Whether or not Obama supports the legalization of marijuana. Yep. That question topped those on financial stability or the budget or "green jobs." Obama's response was punch-drunk laughter and then, "I don't know what this says about the online audience." And then, to a lot of people's disappointment, Obama said that the legalization of marijuana is not a good strategy for growing our economy.

Actually, Obama is wrong on this one. Do you have any idea how many billions of dollars we spend every year on this absurd war on drugs? I know you don't want to hear this, but we can do a better job of reducing drug usage and save a bunch of money in the process by decriminalizing drugs. That money could be left in the hands of the people who actually earned it ---- my kind of economic stimulus.

What others are saying

  • Attn: DL
You just said that pot is more dangerous than alcohol and tobacco. You must be insane to even think that.

"Look at any country that has legalized it and ask the general public - the responsible members of it, anyway - if it's made society as a whole better or worse, whatever revenues may be drawn from it. They'll tell you the same thing: it was a mistake."

The Netherlands and Switzerland both enjoy lower rates of adolescent marijuana use than the U.S. Mistake? Apparently not.

Anyone who thinks marijuana is bad should read these studies: http://www.drugwarfacts.org/cms/?q=node/53

Be informed, not just another uneducated DARE puppet. Research marijuana. Take the time to understand the other side.

    About marijuana: http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=7305

If people could actually back up what they're saying, that'd make them credible.
  • geesh
i was really offended when he laughed, as if it's so crazy. the only funny thing is that obama once supported this route, when he was in state senate he voted for decriminalization of mary. that's when i started paying attention to him, cause there are not a lot of those politicians out there. he changed his mind when running for US Senate. go figures. anyway, here's a good article about a libertarian running for GA governor. http://www.examiner.com/x-6571-Atlanta-Political-Buzz-Examiner~y2009m3d26-John-Monds-Libertarian-running-for-Georgia-Governor
  • Time for "real" change has come!
Prohibition of marijuana DOESN'T work. Just like with alcohol, it just doesn't work. We spend more money trying to control people who are hurting no one but themselves. Marijuana has NEVER and I'll repeat never caused the death of anyone in 5 thousand years. A recent report claims that the smoke from marijuana doesn't have cancer causing materials in it. You know what has killed people though, asprin along with numerous other drugs created in labs. No one smokes a joint and says, hey lets go murder someone, how about some armed robbery? Maybe, how bout some pizza? Now that I could see.

There are plenty of stupid people in the world and they will always be idiots. There are also some very influential people who smoke pot, doctors, lawyers, judges, former Presidents, our current President for crying out loud.

Let's put and end to these archaic laws along with the billions of dollars wasted on this flim flam "war". Let's prevent our youth from easy access through street dealers how don't check ID's.

How about a revival of common sense in America. The first copies of the Declaration were written on hemp paper. Let's get back to our roots.

    Legalize it!
  • re: pot/beer, not equal
    1. To the one who brought up beer in a conversation about pot: apples and oranges. The effects of pot are far more subtle, insidious and longer lasting, therefore more immediately dangerous to self and others. Drunks deprive others of their rights by going out in public drunk? Yep, they sure do. Potheads will do far worse.

    2. Anyone wanting legalization here is stoned as they type...proof? Look at any country that has legalized it and ask the general public - the responsible members of it, anyway - if it's made society as a whole better or worse, whatever revenues may be drawn from it. They'll tell you the same thing: it was a mistake.
  • prohibition doesn't work
unless your part of the underworld
  • All Angles
Is there any reason to believe that any money created by the legalization of drugs, would not simply become part of the bottom line for the government?

The way I see it, is, it would lead to another significant increase in the size of our already bloated bureacraZy.
  • Marijuana Legalization
My concern with MJ is how long it remains active in the body tissue. Coke and alcohol are in-and-out; THC ( tetra-hydra-cannibanol, the active ingredient in pot)is fat-soluble and hangs out in the body fat for awhile. When I was in college in the 70's, I used to study it in the library when I was doing other research. I was an incredibly good pot baker because I'd saute' it in butter (fat) to draw out the THC. Wild high; haven't done the stuff for more than 20 years--alcohol's my drug of choice. However, after chemotherapy last year my brain is as foggy as a good pot high--should I not be allowed to drive? I work at being hyper-observant while I'm driving, but what's the difference, really? A hyper-observant pothead, cokehead, boozer or chemobrain--what's the difference, we're all impaired, just some stuff's legal--I rest my case.
  • War on Drugs
Pleeeeease.....will some President come to his senses and realize that the war on drugs is not just futile...it is expensive! We have prisons full of people on simple drug offenses. We waste too much time hunting down recreational users (I.E. piss-testing for a job- a falling down drunk everyday alcoholic is OK, but a once a week toker is not???) When will Americans realize that the war on drugs does apply to everyone, whether you are a user or not. OUR tax dollars are being wasted on this stupidity.
  • The real reason
C'mon, I can't believe none of you get the real answer.

1.) Where would all the BRIBE money go? Have none of you seen the repeat offenders go back on the street? That takes bags of cash, pure and simple. Split between Lawyers, Judges and DA's, it is a powerful lubricant.
2.) Probably more importantly, should the need arise ( and it looks like it more and more ), these very same Prisons, Law Enforcement officials, and Judges can be used to imprison those foolish enough to stage a Revolution, just as soon as they clear out all the non-violent "Druggies" to clear spaces for the enemies of the State.

You gotta think outside the box here people.

And to the poster that said it was illegal to grow your own Tobacco, better do a little research, no such law exists.
  • Welfare, Unemployed, Community Organizers
What do these have in common. They were able to watch the town hall meeting during the middle of a workday because......THEY HAVE NO JOB AND DON'T PAY TAXES. This townhall meeting was directed to his constituents.
  • Alcohol and Tobacco is legal...
There is literally no reason in this day and age that marijuana should be illegal when alcohol and tobacco is legal. I find it hilarious that the biggest groups that are against legalization are the alcohol and tobacco companies. Entities tied to drug cartels also block legalization efforts. As long as it is illegal the Mexican drug lords can make a killing off of it. The only reason why legalization is so toxic in politics is because of the absurd anti-drug campaigns that have used the most incredible BS to misinform the public about marijuana. In a world where you can literally go to your doctor and complain about chronic pain and be prescribed synthetic cocaine and heroine it is crazy to think that a plant with literally zero negative side effects can be made illegal. I think Obama should have taken this much more seriously.
  • Legalizing...
I'm all for it. I'm surprised the gov't isn't for it - it could be taxed. I think the first shop should be set up at Underground, the sooner the better. Of course, a Black Market would emerge, as I doubt all our legislators and other public officials wouldn't be willing to sign for their "goodies."

Also, why does PrezBo keep asking the public to ask him questions. Why doesn't he just tell us what he plans to do. When we know his plans, including how he's going to get it done, we can ask better questions.

I am now going back into my self-induced coma until I wake up to say something else.
  • Legalize Marijuana
I am all for making it legal, provided getting a DUI is a felony, punishable with a 3-5 year sentance which is mandatory. Anyone who drives while intoxicated be it alcohol, drugs (even legalally prescribed ones) is putting not just their life at risk but anyone else on the road and cars are 3800+ pound lethal weapons.
  • government babysitting
If Obama was truly trying to serve the people, rather than control them he would not have laughed or given the response that he did, rather he would have taken this as a sign of the abundant interest in marijuana legalization. It shouldn't matter what his personal take on the issue is. If the majority of the population wants pot legalized, it should be legalized, regardless of any costs or cuts in government expenditures that would result.
  • it's not a drug
take a seed, add water, sunshine, and some soil, and it grows. That is a plant folks! Not a drug. Drugs (like tylenol, which kills thousands every year) are made in labs, by processing things and adding things.

What is the difference between aloe and weed - both plants with tons of uses!
  • Joe &LH
Thanks, I'll just picture him as the loser in his mother's basement...

Cowboy you are so right. We might actually have room in jail to KEEP the real criminals if we get the pot heads out, just not the dealers. And it would give Philip Morris a new business line!
  • TAX POT..?
pass the fairtax and it takes the fun out of living the underground lifestyle.it literally smokes the fox outta his hole and brings to light how much they spend and also takes the fun outta making all that tax free income.
  • Take the money and false glamour out of drugs...
...and you're just left with a trashy dead end.

Some will always choose them, but the illegality of the drugs does far more damage, and effects far more people, than the drugs themselves.
  • Ugh
I hate when people say "Ohhh but we can't do that or x jobs will be lost"

What happened when we stopped using switchboard operators so much?

It was the same whinefest. There was an 80% job loss in that industry...do you really think all of those former switchboard operators starved to death? Nope. Most of them found new jobs or went back to school. New industries opened up and there they went.

As the CATO insitute themselves has said:

"Finding cheaper ways to produce goods and services frees up labor to produce other things. If productivity gains aren't made, where in the world would we find workers to produce all those goods that weren't even around in the 1970s?

    "

You should NEVER sacrifice progress to "keep jobs".

    See Article:

    http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=2810

I've even heard politicians use as a COUNTER ARGUMENT when told that recycling plastic isn't that good "ohhh but it creates so many jobs..."

Who the heck wants to do a worthless job!? Not me.
  • @Bryan
Why there is another new twist to it! You nailed it..green jobs!

Actually, hemp in general is a really green product. Paper made from that instead of tree pulp is far more resilient and can be recycled 7 times more than regular paper. And it grows fast. But that is regular hemp, not the juiced up super hemp that is pot.

But good point! Maybe we can get OwlGore to buy into that :)
  • Liberal? In What manner?
The best chance to end this horrible war on drugs is to send true conservatives to Washington. I'm not talking about RINO's but the real deal. We call the fascist democrats "liberals" but that is a misnomer. Big government "liberals" gave us the war on drugs just like they gave us prohibition.
Our Founding Fathers believed that true personal liberty, combined with personal responsibility, was achieved by keeping government out of people's lives as much a possible. That's liberty. That's true liberalism. This is what frustrates me so much when I read comments from people like CopyLeft. Are these folks so blinded by their envy that they would give away their birthright. Read the story of Jacob and Esau for God's sake.
  • BTW
That picture reminds me of the Army sniper ads that use to run (forget which magazine had them). "By the time you see him, it's too late!"
  • Convert
I used to think legalizing drugs was a bad idea. I'm still not 100% sold, but at least 85%. I don't smoke, never have. It is, as Neal has repeated, stupid. But for the life of me I can't think of a better way to save billions in taxpayer dollars.

I think it depends on the type of drug though. The effects of meth or cocain are much more of a concern than pot. And any law legalizing 'drugs' would have to be very specific and need to include that you couldn't do it on the job or while driving.
  • notopot
you've been watching too much "Refer Madness"
  • I support legalizing marijuana as well, having an elder family member who could benefit from using it medicinally. If anything, I'm ticked off by Obama's laughter, and I know I am not alone.
  • Dumb democrats
Don't they realize that if marijuana was legal that they could tax it. This would also as Boortz said cut down on the money that we spend on this war on drugs. Save from the taxpayer and tax the stupid pot heads, a pure win-win
  • @ Joyce
Try not to let copy get to you. That person is just an antogonist that obviously hasn't a clue and gets jollies this way. I actually like reading the drivel for a good laugh!
  • Interesting that the 1st response wasn't....
...It's highly un-Constitutional in the 1st place; enumerated powers?!?! Yet again, let the 9th & 10th kick-in and do what they should, let the States dictate and keep a piece of the pie after they decide what to do about it.

2nd - Liberals love the 'choice'....except for drugs, schools, parental notification, etc.
  • yes!
    You are absolutely correct sir!

I have never touched the stuff, nor do i intend to do so.

But if people want to smoke weed, then why not take that money out of the drug dealers? Let the states tax it!

When i suggest this, people think im crazy, or the world's biggest pothead.

    People need to wake up!
  • 2012
Someone who is planning a prez run in 2012 will answer this question a bit differently, one more reason to look ahead with hope for change.
  • Green jobs
Wouldn't growing marijuana be considered a green job? It is green and absorbs CO2 while growing. Obama could increase the number of green jobs that he says he is creating by legalizing pot.
  • I love Joyce
    Enough said.
  • It won't stimulate the economy
Let me first say that I completely support the legalization of marijuana.

It would show economic growth only because it would legitimize a segment of the underground economy. The money we spend on enforcement would continue to be spent unless we legalize all drugs (cocaine, heroin, opium, etc). More people would not have jobs because of it, it would just appear that way because a lot of the drug-related jobs would be realized. Smugglers who run marijuana between the states would be replaced by truckers. Illegal marijuana farms would be replaced by legal farms, but the enforcement (DEA and other agencies) would still raid illegal marijuana farms (think about tobacco. You can smoke it, but can't grow your own. Legal marijuana would be the same). The most significant difference from the legalization of marijuana would be the incredible increase in tax revenue the government receives.
  • marijuana legalization
why let a good crisis go to waste especially if that crisis gives the federal government an excuse to drain more tax dollars from the people.how much you want to bet we will soon be subsidizing the pot growers in mexico whom will funnel these dollars to the mexican mafia.way to secure our borders by always taking the least resistant path...!confinscation from the haves to give to the have nots..
  • Being from Canada, I know MANY pot smokers(at least 5 of whom are dead as a result)... Pot smoking makes people MORE STUPID(more murders - for example, killing a girl because she does not like you but it was okay because you were high????? -, drunk driving, ect). The last thing we need is MORE STUPID People. ANOTHER HUGE MISCONCEPTION: Medical Pot is used to help people eat, NOT CURE Cancer. Quite the opposite as it has been linked to causing cancer.
Also, Drug dealers want money. Legalize one drug, they will market new and more dangerous drugs which will NOT solve money spent on the drug war.
Do the research on the countries that have legalized. Not a good outcome. Money will get diverted to healthcare, crimes committed while high, dui's, and so on... Then there is the second hand smoke which will suck for those of us that do not like it and do NOT want people to have an excuse to be more STUPID!!
  • At least we know...
    ...where peoples' heads are!

Honestly, while I wouldn't partake, I certainly don't see anything at all wrong with pot. Just use the same restrictions for alcohol for pot. No biggie. Tax the crap out of it too.

And, just for good measure. Keep in mind that lots of pot smoking causes sperm count to decrease. Done long enough, it causes it permanently. In fact, if you could get all the losers in the world to smoke huge joints all the time while paying taxes for the purchase of it from their welfare checks, maybe we could actually decrease the number of welfare losers in the world. Just a thought ;)

Seriously, though. Just like companies have the ability to limit some behaviors as a condition of work, they can say a pee test clear of pot is required too. I don't think it is a huge a deal to legalize as many suppose it to be. And I'm not a liberal by any stretch of the imagination!
  • You mean
Copyleft: "Times like these I wish we'd been able to elect an actual liberal, instead of a plain ol' moderate Democrat like Obama".

You mean an outright communist? Oh you are such a worthless excuse for a human being. I don't like to make such direct attacks on people but you really are disgusting. And you love it.
  • Not surprised
that this is the number-one question. I can picture most of these quasi college students (who literally know everything) typing with a bowl sitting next to the keyboard. My God, I knew potheads got PrezBo elected, and this is proof.

BY THE WAY: does anybody think Barack's 'punch-drunk' laughter looks like a fit of the giggles that only stoners are known of having? Obama laughs when he is afraid to answer a question honestly or does not know the answer, but he really does look high in these interviews.
  • PrezBo
I heard mark Levin say yesterday on his radio show that "I'm sick of seeing the guy everywhere I look. He's like Mao Tse Tung! He's everywhere you look!" I couldn't agree more. The sight of the guy makes my blood pressure go up. I expect to start seeing posters with his picture on it on billboards at the side of the road soon" Oh Great Leader!
  • Those who would smoke it are doing so already
This is a leftover policy from Hoover's dislike of minorites, and his fear that color'd folks would get hopped up on this devil weed and come after our white women. Now that we've matured to the point that we realize that he was a power-hungry bureaucrat, we're able to say 'just tax it!' We can't afford to keep all of these non-violent criminals fed and clothed for long sentences. Even if they were all released and put on welfare, it would save the taxpayers billions. It is time to get over this irrational fear of drugs. We saw it with prohibition, and look what happened to us... we're all uncontrollable boozers ...except for the vast majority of us who still go to work and pay taxes. Yes, kids will use it, but they do already. If it is legalized, at least they won't be slapped with a criminal record for being busted, smoking a J on their couch and watching Family Guy.
  • Legalize It
Spooner, I mean Obama is a token Marxist, obviously.
  • not surprised
I'm not surprised this is whats on the minds of the people that elected him.. I always knew they had to be high or something.

that being said.. legalize it.. and tax the hell out of it.. how can alcohol be legal, cigarettes be legal.. but weed not? hell.. in fact.. lets take it a step further.. tax domestic weed at a lower percentage than imported weed.. (that is.. put a tarriff on imported weed).. this will give people jobs and actually create a variety of new markets for the highschool kid/college student/young adult with no life to waste their mcdonalds money while they complain about BENEFITS.

maybe then when the govt is taxing potheads for getting high.. they can leave the rest of us alone.
  • re: legalizing drugs
Bill, I'm sure with all the additional government jobs our socialist president is going to be creating, the DEA won't have to worry about jobs. Personally, I'd prefer they just get fired and send me back my tax dollars, but if you must find something might I suggest they become drug treatment counselors?

As for your comment on prisons, might I suggest that this would allow them to hold more actual criminals rather than letting them out early due to overcrowding? What good does it do to house perpetrators of a non-violent, victimless crime with psychopaths anyway?
  • DL
    A few questions...

Do you drink beer? What do we already do with people who endanger the lives of others when they go overboard with beer?

Also, where in the constitution does it give the federal government the authority to make drug laws and tell people what they can and can't put into their bodies? Why are federal drug laws such a new concept in the history of America?
  • legalize / grow economy
In 1980 the DEA had run out of storage space for seized pot in the Tampa area. After drawn out negogiations with the electric utility it was agreed that the pot would be burned in a generator operation, with the DEA paying for the extra oil it took to burn the pot, and maintainence to clean the burner. On the day of the operation the utility workers kept decreasing the oil feed to the burner as it was not needed, untill the oil feed was cut off, and the pot feeded in burnt and generated electricity for over 10 hours. It was determined that no extra maintainence was needed on the burner. Could there be a lesson here ?
  • So much would be saved...
...if America could come to its senses on drugs and apply some small degree of logic to the subject. Do you have any idea the billions that would be saved on doing away with America's drug war addiction and failed drug policies ? Its in the billions!! Money we could use!! Drug addiction is a health problem not a law enforcement problem....I just wish that so many Americans did not have such a seemingly naturally occuring fear and rejection of the ideas of personal responsibility and individual freedom. I have no idea why so many Americans even take to the streets to celebrate on July 4th when they are absolutely opposed to the idea of liberty and personal responsibility. Just what the founders fought for.

Hey Randy...what do you mean by token?
  • budz
Man, that's some good lookin' smoke!
Yeah, don't know if the lawmakers are ever going to realize that prohibition is a losing battle. As evidenced by the most recent events
  • America's drug war addiction..
When are politicians going to learn that have lost the drug war? If they are interested in defeating drugs, then why do they insist on keeping the value of marijuana so high? Why don't people hit the history books to figure out that prohibition did not and still does not work? Curiously any of the anti-marijuana normalization people out there....do you drink beer or smoke cigarettes/cigars ? ?
  • DEA
DEA agents will tell you they can't keep up as it is now. If we took pot out of the mix, then they could concentrate on more serious issues.
  • do as i say, not as i do
there is no way the prez will decrimilize weed. if he wanted to, the lobbyists from the law enforcement would stop him. theres too much money.
  • Drugs
If they would legalize marijuana and have farms (guarded of course) to grow it they could make marijuana cigaretts and sell them in packs and charge the crap out of the stupid smokers with high taxes on the product. You would still have to be over 21 to purchase them. This would probably take care of the national deficit in a year or two.
  • For once, Neal's right
Obama made the wrong call on this one. Legalizing pot--and more importantly, discontinuing the stupid and failed War on Drugs--would do a lot for our economy, and our society in general.

Times like these I wish we'd been able to elect an actual liberal, instead of a plain ol' moderate Democrat like Obama.
  • re: weed
If someone could guarantee all pot smokers would stay the hell in their houses and not drive or operate machinery while stoned - which, if legal, would be more often than not - I'd be all for legalization. Until then, cram it.
  • smoke
Apparently I'm not the only person who thinks when Obama jestures putting his thumb & 1st finger together it looks like he's holdin' a joint/roach & gettin' ready to pass it on. Can I puff on that thing prez?
  • legalizing drugs
One problem with legalizing drugs is that we would have hundreds of DEA goons out of work. What are they gonna do for a living? Another problem is that many prisons would have to close for lack of inmates. They would have to do what colleges have done to increase enrollment: reduce the requirements for getting in.
  • Obama Legalizing Pot
Oh come on. Urkel might be a token but he's definitely not a toker.
