WHERE'S THAT KOREAN MISSILE?

Do you think this being president thing is easy? Consider just one bothersome little problem President Obama is having to deal with this week while he's (not too deftly) trying to solve our economic woes.

North Korea is said to be preparing a missile launch. This missile is capable of reaching Hawaii. The missile is on the launch pad, and the Gargoyle says he is going to launch the thing before April 8th. North Korea says that the missile is designed to carry a communications satellite. Well, what would you expect? Are they actually going to announce that it is designed to carry a nuclear warhead?

The North Korean launch would be in violation of international law - not that I'm all that high on international law. If we shoot it down it would be a clear signal to Kim Jong Ill that the United States is not a weakened power and that we are going to do what is necessary to neutralize the North Korean threat. On the other hand, if we or one of our allies shots that thing down North Koreas has said that they will consider that to be an act of war. North Korea could retaliate in some way .. perhaps against Seoul.

Then, of course, there is the decision not to do anything. Just let the North Koreans test-fire their missile and, in the process, realize some advances in their missile and weapons delivery technology. Some nations not exactly friendly to us might look at this as a demonstration of America's increasing weakness and our willingness to appease. This would make the entire world a more dangerous place for America.

Easy to criticize, isn't it? Shoot the missile down and make your point, and risk an escalation of the situation with North Korea. Let them play with their new toy and America appears weak. Aren't you glad you don't need to make this call?

The Obama administration, by the way, says that they won't do anything to interfere with the launch.

What others are saying

  • Stan Gable
Ugh. "Some random dessert?" You must be kidding. Yeah, that dessert that our troops are in.... completely "random."

As for NK, Stan, you can thank Clinton/Carter for helping us get into this mess. They went and brokered a deal with the Gargoyle and waxed triumphant upon their return. But, of course, Kim Jong-Il never honored their agreement and went right on pursuing his building of a nuke.

    Thanks guys.
  • North Korea rocket
Doesn't North Korea already counterfeit our currency? That, in itself, is an act of war.
  • Why?
Why is it such an issue to prevent us from "looking weak"? Has that ever protected any nation? No. If anything, it invites a fight to strut around, acting tough. Nations that don't "look tough" usually get left alone, or even if they get messed with, it's minor and damage is slight, while tough nations (Rome? Ancient China? Britian?) end up watching as everyone gangs up to tear them apart, even if it takes centuries. Give it a rest already.
  • Enough is enough!!
If this was Pres. Bush we would of sent a carrier off the coast and Kim would back down. Not even three months under Obama and Kim is getting his way. That's scary what does that tell the rest of those countries who hate us. Well it's too late we are saying sorry for keeping insane idiots like Kim in check. Enough is enough!!
  • Enough is enough!!
If it was Bush we would sent a carrier off the coast and Kim would be like were cool I'm only playing. The reason why I know cause it happened the past eight years. Not even three months under Obama and Kim is showing like he really has balls now. I'm sorry but our foreign policy with dealing with this situations like this is scary. I know I'm not the only one that realizes this. We need to stop saying sorry to people who hate us and say enough is enough!!
  • Red Leader
Well we can agree on one thing...get the illegals out and stop welfare.

As far as cost goes...I don't mind paying for things that are explicitely laid out in the Constitution. I do agree that we get involved in way to many things. I don't think it was here but another thread I said we should pull out of the UN and stop giving them so much money as well...especially since everyone else seems to cower in the face of adversity.

AS far as telling us something...it does....it tells us that the weasels in Washington see easy votes at the expense of us.

We don't disgree on what we both feel is right Red....

I think we just have different angles of attaining it.

I would be 100% behind getting rid of all illegals.

Being in the Navy I worked with many immigrants earning thier citizenship...now you talk about people who hated illegals. Especially the Mexican one's serving for their freedom. Right behind them were the Islanders....not a one wanted Obama in office. In fact a guy I served with from Africa (earning his right to live here) said if he wanted communisism he would've stayed in Africa.
  • If we miss
I agree, if we shoot and miss that's a whole lot worse than watching the technology our enemies have and then trying to one up them. What if we saw what their missiles were capable, then launch a couple off of our own out of the west coast. Have them land in the Pacific somewhere farther than what the North Koreans did.
  • Korean Missile Test
I don't know about you guys, but I'd practiced taking pot shots at it with my new,747, Laser borne missile defense system. Besides, targets are expensive, so it would save tax dollars. Oh... and if we actually hit it, just deny...deny...deny. I'm sure Obama can handle that.
  • catchin' stuff
    4got sunpin
If we fail then it's back to the drawing board. good time to test our stuff....
  • catchin' stuff
I have a solution for the NK missle launch.
    It is a two parter.
    1. Lets see if it gets off the ground and then see if Japan can knock it down, their weapons systems are copies of ours, if they miss/fail.....
    2. We (US) try some of our newest secret stuff, LASER, Air to Air missles, Sub launched spookie secret stuff. And keep our collective mouths shut, or say publicly "oh so solly"......
The XPERTS serving our Nation in uniform say Sure We Can. The braying jackasses in D.C. say NO WE CAN'T....I'll be on the xperts side thank you.
  • Europe
This is the time when other modern countries, such as European countries or Japan, really should be doing more to hamper threats from dangerous nations. They say they don't need America, or want it to act as a superpower. Then don't make us have to deal with every dangerous situation. If one of them, besides Israel, showed some back bone, we wouldn't have as many of these dictators out there. If a country shot down the missile, they'd be making a step to removing us from the very power they claim bugs them so much. And it'd increase unity against threats like this all over the world. But wait, won't that make the world more dangerous? No. That logic has been proven false. So shoot the sucker down. If a war did break out, they wouldn't fight it alone. With North Korea spiraling the way it is, it might actually be the final straw on that Communist Camel Countries back.

    It'll never happen. Too bad.
  • again?
Ah, Kim What's-his-face screams and yells and stomps his tiny feet. "Look at me, look at me, pay attention to ME!!!" Again. I don't suppose if we ignore this fool, he'll go away? *sigh* Probably not. Blast the damn thing out of the sky as soon as it leaves N. Korean airspace. *shrug* He'll know that somebody finally paid attention.
  • North Korean Missile
'Scuse me... but just HOW can that missile be "for carrying a communications satellite" when it can ONLY REACH HAWAII??

A comsat would have to ORBIT the Earth.

That rocket would only be capable of a ballistic arc with a hang-time of only 1/2 an hour.... NOT USEFUL for a comsat!

Do they think we're that stupid???
  • Navy Buckeye
"One of the only rights given to our federal government by the Constitution is to protect us. I don't care what the cost is for that. "

Yet cost is still an issue. Whether you care or not is an independent factor. You cannot make bombs etc. if you don't have cash. You can't fight wars if you are out of money. Bankruptcy will cripple America's defenses. America's broke.I understand what the constitution dictates. Let's start with the Mexican border and stopping involvement in other people's affairs only to face blowback. I understand your service, but understand also that I am fully dedicated to the intellectual arguement of re-instating logic into the foreign policy of America. If America is giving cash to regimes that practice shari'a law, and have a tendency towards terror, I will be part of that crowd to keep pointing that out.If America is testing weapons in other people's countries, then how do you expect to be taken seriously when you ask other countries to not do the same? Just the stone cold truth.Would you yourself listen to/trust the Saudis if they were testing weapons, then asked you to not do the same?

"Our federal government gives out trillions upon trillions of dollars to welfare, foods stamps and other programs that it has no right funding. Yet no one is trying to stop that."

You yourself just made the case for bringing the troops home and focusing on America. When the Mexican border was better protected than the Korean border during 9/11 a hypothetical red flag MUST go up for Americans if we are to participate in logic. The same guys saying there's a terror threat REFUSE to secure the border and get the illegals out..this has to tell us something.
  • NK Missle
Take it out now, right now, before they even get the chance to fire it. Use a cruise missle, blast the site, and then tell them we did it, more to follow if necessary. Of course, everybody knows that ain't gonna happen under this administration.
  • Red Leader
One of the only rights given to our federal government by the Constitution is to protect us. I don't care what the cost is for that. I was willing and if needed will go back to full duty and give my life for my country.

Our federal government gives out trillions upon trillions of dollars to welfare, foods stamps and other programs that it has no right funding. Yet no one is trying to stop that. So when the day comes the goverment stops collecting my paycheck (one that I work hard for) and giving it to those unwilling to work for a living, then maybe we can talk about funding the one item our goverment was given permission to fund.
  • A response would actually require...
    ...a real pair.

There is no evidence of that with the current president.
  • I'd take my chances with a second Korean war.
And here's why. It could be that the Gargoyle is bluffing. Even if he's not though, I'm far more afraid of these Islamo-fascist nuts than I am of the N. Korean commies. The terrorists have already made it clear that they're capable of hitting us at home and more than willing to do so. I'd rather be proactive with Korea who's far better financed and far more organized. That said I will readily concede that I don't have the same info that the President has, so I can only form opinions on info made available to the general public.
  • Navy Buckeye...
"We can test missiles because people know we are not goint to just decide one day to use it to take out someone for no reason. "

Then maybe you can explain how Iraq was going to reach mainland America in retalition for the American invasion? Would they have used their air force...or navy? If they could not retaliate what does this say about their threat to America in the 1st place in conjunction with your above statement. Why not go after China, those guys are pretty ruthless dictators...but the difference is China can probably retaliate on American soil. Therefore America plays nice with China...China is an actual threat.Surely you weren't thinking that all people don't see America as a threat do you? When America gives 10 billion to an islamic dictator and the possibility of that money filtering down to islamic terrorists arises....you see that as NOT being a threat? Some people still see Iraq as have been attacked for no reason. Why couldn't the surrounding middle eastern countries that do not want their emerging capitalist mentalities threatened, have taken care of Saddam? Why can't we start controlling the middle east with our wallets as they would be one big dust bowl if it weren't the American dollar buying their oil?

"just ask the Iraqi citizens who they would rather have around."

But can we afford this kind of feel good militarism with 11 trillion dollar debt? It just seems like babysitting to me, let these people figure out where they need to go. Im sure the welfare queens in New Orleans would like the Federal Government to stick around indefinitely also.

"Their minds would change real fast......"

Im pretty sure I would be even more solidified in believing America needs to start taking care of itself rather than policing the planet to the tune of bankruptcy. I know people personally who have served over there also, and disagree very strongly with what's taking place over there.

Differences aside thank you for serving.
  • North Korea
I say shoot it down the moment it leaves the launch pad. Realistically what chance does North Korea have in a war with South Korea? They have no money to support a war. The people of North Korea don't want a war, they want to be free in South Korea. Allowing South Korea (backed by our weapons) to defeat and then re-absorb North Korea may be the best option and provide stability to the region.
  • Missle Test
Leave it alone. I doubt it will work. But if it does, so what? The genii is out of the bottle. Pandora has opened her box. (Take whichever you prefer.)

We cannot un-invent ballistic missiles. As the technological abilities of people around the world increase, more and more nations will be able to build more and more sophisticated weapons. We are not going to be able to stop that from happening. Instead, we need to function in a world where people we don't like have missiles that can hit the US -- some of which may be tipped with nuclear weapons.

We've dealt with it before, but somehow we weren't all that offended by Soviet missiles. Perhaps it was because the USSR was a large country. It's easy to treat large countries with respect. But we're used to treating countries like North Korea as insignificant little piss ants. That's going to have to change.

The way to deal with the world that is coming is to bring our troops home, mind our own business, and be prepared to obliterate any country that attacks the US. If we do that, we'll get along fine.
  • Take it out
Which is worse, retribution from an economically weak NK that likely posseses nukes or future attack from an economically weaker (ie desperate) NK that definitely has nukes and the ICBM to deliver them to much of the world, including the US? Especially after Obama bargains away our SDI base in Poland which could prevent sadi ICBM from reaching the continental US?

I also like the idea of doing it and then keeping our mouth shut. Along the lines of the last scene of Red October... "Yuri, you mean to tell me you've lost ANOTHER submarine?"
  • kim yong il's new toy
I seriously doubt the North Koreans are sending a satellite so that Kim Yong Il can get Direct TV at his palace...
If the US Navy could shoot down a satellite falling from orbit a few months ago, I don't think they should have a problem with this one.
  • NK
Take it out. The fact the we test missiles has nothing to do with this case. We can test missiles because people know we are not goint to just decide one day to use it to take out someone for no reason. Unlike the NK's and Iran.

It's amazing how so many Americans take their faux freedom for granted. They think it magically came from thin air.

I'm to disgusted to even type responses to some of the comments on here.

I've served my country. I put my life on the line. Maybe it's about darn time those of us who have served start making those who hide behind us go to the frontlines. Their minds would change real fast......as they cry themselves to sleep every night. Atleast they would see...we are the good guys.

Name one military in the history of the world, besides the US and Britians that citizens would run to for help rather than cower in fear from....just ask the Iraqi citizens who they would rather have around.

Oh and to you libs....the terrorists don't count as Iraqi citizens.
  • Heck yeah!
I could make that call... take it out. America isn't weak and it should be made crystal clear.
  • the terrorists must be laughing to themselves...
...to see that America continues to get itself into situations it can't handle. It is one of the goals of the terrorists to get America involved financially in things that will bankrupt and destroy it. Policing the planet is just that thing. Who knew that America would defeat the Soviet empire only to turn around and start acting like the Soviet empire itself. Will America then share the same fate as the Soviet Empire? It is beyond me that the neo-conservative type will complain about spending and the national debt but cannot make the most obvious connection between the 11 trillion dollar debt, and America thrusting itself into the internal affairs of other nations and spending billions of dollars it has to force inflation to create in order to maintain this anti-conservative, leftist, big government mentality. Those who keep saying bomb other countries that have done anything to America must surely be fine with inflation, recession and destruction of the value of the dollar. Fiscal conservatism and pre-emptive war are indeed polar opposites at this point.
  • What you see...
...is not always what you get.

We don't always hear what really happens in an instance like this. My bet is the US could intercept the missile and not acknowledge it. Condemn the test in the press, make it sound like it was a failure of a technologically inferior North Korean weapon in the press, then move along and have a nice day.
  • Let them test it
I say let them test it. The last one did not perform as expected. This is a test of the US, not the missile. If it gets destroyed then no one will really know what capabilities they have. If it under performs they look like a braggart with a glass jaw. If it performs well then maybe everyone will see what we have on our hands. If I were him, and wanted simply to test the missile technology, no one would know about it until it was in the air.
  • @By Armed @ 03/30/09 09:42:51 AM
You sound about as stupid as the people who used Saddam's claims of WMD as a basis for invading Iraq. Well he said he had them and why would he lie? What else could we do?

How about not let a crazy, third world enemy dictate our foreign policy? Is that too much to ask?

And now, not only do you want to start launching missiles into North Korea but you blame liberals for preventing you? People like you make me think liberals aren't worthless afterall.
  • Anti-Missles
I really want to see Japan take care of it, solely because I want to see pictures of there secret anti-missle mecha (giant robot) on the internet afterward.

Seriously speaking this is a very tough call and I'm glad I don't have to make it. If we have the capability take it down, since that would hopefully also send the message we could flatten NK.

Or how about a nice little super-secret strike team to take out the gargoyle and his cabinet? Sorry, its the video games talking again.
  • Wow
I sure am glad Bush did a lot to help out against North Korea. I am sure he didnt put all our troops in a random desert and not where there was an actual threat. wait a second...
  • Destroy it on the ground.
One cruise missile launched from a sub. Then say nothing. No statement, no claim of responsibillity, no demands to stop any program, just silence. They will get the message. I don't believe the Koreans have any capabillity to track a cruise missle, as they fly under conventional radar. I also believe they have no way of tracking our submarines. Everyone would know it was us, but no one would be able to prove it.
  • korea
We need Chuck Norris for president. Did you know that each of Chuck Norris' testes is each larger than the other.
  • Armed
"If the liberals had not run away with America's balls, a cruise missile could take it out on the pad. That may seem overly aggressive, but who honestly thinks there is a satellite on that rocket?"

Then NK invades Seoul. What do you do then? Does the United States get into a third war?

"Bomb them" isn't always as simple as it sounds.
  • NORTH KOREA
THIS IS ANOTHER STEP FOR ALL THE COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD WHO HATE US TO SEE JUST HOW FAGGISH OUR COUNTRY WILL BE. WE HAVE A SYSTEM WE HAVE CHECKED OURSELVES -- LET'S CHECK IT WITH THIS MISSLE!!!!! THEN WE WILL SEE WHAT WE HAVE AND ALSO TELL THE *&*%^&ING COUNTRIES WE MEAN BUSINESS. WHERE IS THE AMERICAN SPIRIT!!!!!!!!
  • Reuters Reporting...
Reuters posted this article (http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUSTRE52T0F820090330) at 8:30am EST today.
It talks about two US Navy ships with missile-intercept capabilities being deployed from S. Korea to the waters off of N. Korea.
I don't know if the President is calling the shots there, but, if he changes his mind we'll have a little suprise for the gargoyle.
  • I say we should do our own testing.
We have a new defensive system which we have been testing using our own equipment, it is an airborne laser. We could be out in the international waters of the Pacific with it in flight testing against our own sea launched target missiles. If Korea launches this "test" missile and Japan doesn't shot it down first then it would be a shame if our laser accidentally locked onto and destroyed Korea's missile.
  • Neal you're delving into neo-con mysticism again...
Does America test fire missles? Yes, research the Okinawans(not the Japanese, the Okinawans) on American weapons testing. What we are seeing here is blowback, the result of America's needless meddling on the planet, you idiots that'll say Im anti-American just don't understand the concept of responsibility for actions. Just the plain hard unarguable truth here. Why would Americans be able to test their weapons on the soil of other countries then ask other countries to stop doing the same? Japan and Korea are historic enemies..let the Japanese handle it, along with the Chinese who don't want N.Korea acting up either. If you were the leader of a country and the only country that has used a nuke to kill people asked you to stop testing weapons, do you trust them? With 11 trillion dollar debt America is not in a position to spend money on policing the world. It also has no constitutional authority to police the world. Why not bring some troops home and put them on the Mexican border for Christ sake if America actually wants to start taking its security seriously? The Mexican border is probably where the next terrorist attack will come from. The GOP MUST severe this neo-con globalist military welfarism mentality in order to move ahead. Its time to embrace traditional conservatism and reject interventionism. Maybe Eisenhower was right about the military industrial complex.
  • Why wait until they shoot it?
If the liberals had not run away with America's balls, a cruise missile could take it out on the pad. That may seem overly aggressive, but who honestly thinks there is a satellite on that rocket?

Also, Iran's facilities should have been wiped out long ago. I do believe Israel will see to it soon though and damn the consequences of preemption.
  • The important question: *Can* we shoot it down?
Do we have the technological capability to intercept a missile in mid-flight? I don't know. I know as of a few years ago we couldn't do it reliably in staged tests, much less a scenario where someone else is shooting the missile.

Trying to shoot it down and missing might make us look weaker than not doing anything at all.
  • Korean Missle
Surely, we can all be nice and just talk about this before anything bad happens.
