WARRANTY ENTITLEMENT?

Starting today the United States government will stand behind your warranty. That means that the United States taxpayers are guaranteeing your warranty. Excuse me, but doesn't this take some type of legislation? How does the president suddenly decide that all GM, Ford and Chrysler warranties are to be guaranteed by taxpayers?

Excuse me .. and I know that this is old fashioned thinking ... but I don't seem to remember the congress passing a law saying that the taxpayers could guarantee automobile warranties for a select number of owners. Maybe Herman Cain was doing my show that day. But .. Barack is King right now .. and all he really has to do is say it, and it's law.

Wait! There's more! Aren't we going to have to establish a grand new government bureaucracy to handle all of these warranties? And once that government bureaucracy is established, how many of you think it will ever be dissolved? How many of you think that we will ever reach the point where warranties on cars manufactured in America aren't guaranteed by the taxpayers? Who is going to set the warranty terms? The government or the automakers? Will we have politicians campaigning on the promise to extend and expand car warranties? How about "If you vote for so-and-so, you're going to have to pay to repair your own car."

We are seeing the beginning of a grand new entitlement program here.

What others are saying

  • Auto Warranties
I am waiting for the president to pay my auto loan first! Oh, I'm sorry, he has not enacted that into law yet...give him time!!!
  • H, Obama
When will the people of this country stand up and take this nation back. We all see the writing on the wall and the abusive powers Obama is enacting...I can't imagine 4 years of this. Please let's band together and get these people out of Washington.
  • Barry the Bozo
When is this country going to learn? This Bozo is running our country into a very hard piece of ground. Very sad!! It makes me scared for my kids and future grandchildren.
  • History lesson
Up until Barry Obama assumed office, laws were passed by Congress. Don't go levy blame on GW for his role in the auto mess. Congress could have blocked the $ if they so desired and it was a Democratic controlled Congress at the time. We are seeing unprecedented usurpation of power by Barry. If GW would have done what Barry has done in his first couple months in office, the uninformed masses would be calling for his impeachment...
  • But wait a darn minute . . .
From what I recall from B-school, future warranty costs are carried on the income statement as an expense - how is Obama going to guarantee these warranties and what does it do the company balance sheet - as if that really matters to a future bankrupt company.

  • Automobile warranties
Among the cars I've owned are a Packard, a DeSoto, an Oldsmobile and now a Saturn. I think it's a GREAT idea that the government (you taxpayers) are going to support my warranty. Finally!!!
  • Can we get over the BDS already??????
"let's remember that Bush started this thing by bailing out the financial industry without congressional approval."

Bullsqueeze. The original TARP program was passed by both houses of congress. I remember that McCain flew back to Washington immediately to do the job he was getting paid for (and was criticized for it) while PrezBO's initial response was "call me if you need me".
  • Boycott the Government
I will no longer buy or do business with any company that is controlled by the Obama Administration. Not going to buy anything built by GM or Chrysler, no mortgages from GMAC or any of the big banks...no insurance from any AIG company. Time to let the market put these freeloaders out of business. Let's see how long President Yomomma will keep propping up these clowns.
  • THIS IS IT!!!!!!GENTLEMEN!....START-YOUR-REVOLUTION!!!
Well Neil, this could be just the thing true americans have been praying for to wake up Joe Sixpack-NASCAR Watchin, Peter Pothead and all the american idol fans who didn't care enough to vote on issues instead of empty-suit obama utterances.Never underestimate the power of america's love of automobiles and if government run auto repair becomes like gov. run healthcare then the revolution will began before your next oil change.Obama's a fool to get between american car owners and their cars. Most would give up a kidney before their car keys.
  • Does this mean that Obama will soon have a...
....warranty czar who hasnn't paid his/her taxes in the cabinet?

I think I want a refund for the defective teleprompter puppet housed at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
  • warranty
How is this different from saying "This store belongs to the people of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republic." or "This business is owned by the people of Cuba." ?
  • Reply to Law of Unintended Consequences
Domestic auto-makers already make a crappier product than their competitors, they will just be able to make them even worse.

I work on them daily, and all domestics use cheap parts, plastic components made to appear stylish, etc. I will keep my gas powered BMW, now and long into Big O's opinion of what the auto-makers should be selling.

I can't believe the 'big-3' won't put him in his place when he starts making them design cars that HE wants, and not what the people want. The auto-makers know from much historical data that this won't work, and people won't buy their cars. Just like buying my guns, I can also save my old true gasoline powered engines (even though that sounds stupid)!
  • Autos
This is how it is going to work. 1. Only new GM & Chryslers purchase after June 1, 2009 are covered. 2. When you need warranty work you will fill out a form 10998567BYA and submit it for review. 3. 3-12 months later you will be notified by the Bureau of Automotive Affairs that you vehicle is not covered or the service station which is authorized to do the service is only located in Chicago.
  • Daydreaming
I would like to have PrezBO, or Pelosi and Reid "standing behind" my car...
  • Government Warranty
    Whew,
Now I can get warranty work from the government on my '87 Chevy Truck with 216,000 miles.
    How nice!
  • warranties?
well Mr. goodwrench there goes your bonus!
  • Gov't warranty
I am furious! I bought a Toyota that was made here in the USA. I want a warranty from the government also. Why should I have to pay for somebody's GM or Chrysler warranty and not get my own? I also want a warranty my dishwasher and refrigerator! And my hedge clippers. All of those things were made here and employed people here and if those companies go out of business people will lose jobs. I want!I want!I want!I want!I want!I want!I want!I want!I want!I want!I want!I want!
  • warrantees
The dealerships will love this. Now they can get someone to pay them for doing warrantee work instead of just sucking up the cost themselves. I foresee a huge increase in the demand for warrantee work in the next year. GM will make public all their known-but-not-talked-about deficiencies and put out recalls for warrantee service.
  • POTUS and Auto Repair King
What do we call him now...
Chief Auto Mechanic? Commander of the Goodwrench? Can hardly wait to see him in the blue jump suit fixing my car. Sure hope he keeps the coffee machine and the free water bottles in the waiting room.
  • Dictator Obama
Obama has assumed dictatorial powers. But before we pile onto Obama for it, let's remember that Bush started this thing by bailing out the financial industry without congressional approval.

There is no difference between the two parties -- both hold the Constitution and the people in complete contempt.
  • Warranty
Hey, a new use for the Motor Pool!!

I wonder if they'll have coffee and donuts, while you wait (wait, wait, wait, wait).
  • Extended Warranty
I have a 2000 Pontiac. The motors on the power windows need to be replaced. Think I can get the taxpayers to cover it?
  • Warranty work
This makes me so happy I left the automotive tech world behind. Here is how warranty work is paid. I get 2/3's the amount of the money as I would if it was a straight repair. But wait now His Holiness, The Obama, has just declared a medicaid system for GM and Chrysler. And if there is a dysfunctional and dangerous brake light switch(Hi BMW!) on a covered vehicle the Gov't get's to decide how much to pay me to replace it. And slowly but surely other car owners will want that free vehicle maintenance as well. The Obama may have just started free mechanics for everyone. You don't suppose they will come after those of us that just do work on the side do you? Make us register our Snap-On tool boxes?
  • just maybe a good thing
Think about this way. Government mucks up handling car warrenties. People are unhappy. Then maybe just maybe this will cause enough disgust people will not want government providing their health care.

A long shot I know. Hope is a dangerous thing ;)
  • Come on!
Are you serious? First I have to pay for somebody else's mortgage, now I have to fix their car too?
  • Automaker Intervention
The bigger, more outlandish entitlement is that of Government feeling at liberty to micromanage industries in a competitive marketplace. Perhaps it is Obama's vast business experience that makes him comfy inviting himself into these matters. Whatever the reason, it is painful to watch Government tentacles multiply and extend to new frontiers on a daily basis.
  • Insurance next?
Heh heh, and what about the poor who have to choose between food and car insurance!
  • Warranties
So am I correct in assuming this will not apply to the warranty on my BMW? Or my neighbors Honda? How in the hell is this legal? (Not that I really want the goverment interfering in my warranty business.)

And when are they going to start "standing behind" the warranties on electronics, appliances, furniture, etc?

Sheesh, they should probably appoint Billy Mays as the Consumer Czar. This is how ridiculous it's getting.
  • Auto Health Care
How about that! Now messiahbama is going to nationalize health care for your car!! Does this idiot know no boundaries? Unbelievable. I'll see you at the riots.
  • FUBAR
It will be called The Federalized Under Barack Automotive Repair program.
  • The Onmipotent President
Whenever any liberal friend of mine went on blaming Bush for, well, everything... I'd ask them if they had any clue what the real responsibilities and limits of power came with the office of president. Of course they couldn't - in order for them to believe Bush was to blame everything they had to believe that the office of president had the power and responsibility for... everything.

We ought not be surprised... he was elected by people who don't know civics and cannot tell the difference between a president and a king.
  • Government
It is my understanding that this "legislation by executive order” will only covers new purchases of General Motors or Chrysler vehicles and not existing vehicle warranties. It will also not cover any safety recalls on older cars. Like everything else the government gets involved with there will be pages and pages of regulations for filing a claim, which will probably go into the big black hole of government bureaucracy.
  • Law of unintended consequences
This will also encourage the automakers to make crap cars as they will no longer bear the cost of their decisions.
  • The looters and the Moochers
King Obama said let there be cars and there were cars....
I can't believe I'm saying this but Obama makes Bill Clinton look like a conservative. I was never into Clinton but he sure didn't turn my stomach on a daily basis and he stayed way more middle ground than this bozo. Much more of this and Carter might even start to look like a good President, how scary is that???
Frankly, I think we are at the tipping point of losing the country to the looters and moochers. I'm not sure at what point that the minority of people who have a work ethic actually revolt and take the government back but at the rate it is going that may be the only solution because if King Obama changes too much and we can't put ole humpty dumpty back together again due bureaucracy then the people will have to use force to do so. That or just leave this country to the have-nots and then years later come back and try to salvage what is left from the ashes. Sounds very dramatic but we are looking at a majority of have-nots who want to take the wealth we work for and use it for their collective looting and mooching selves.
  • Warranty?
If the way Government agencies respond now is any indication of how well they can run the auto industry...look out brothers ans sisters! Yeah, 'cause they are so good at dealing with citizens on an normal everyday basis. Just you wait til they get a hold of healthcare! I can se it now..."Thank you for calling the U.S. Auto Warranty Hotline, due the high volume of calls, we estimate your hold time to be...( electronic voice)5 days, 22 hours and 48 minutes...please stay on the line or you'll lose your place. While you're waiting, let us tell you about how we've streamlined our service to handle your needs quickly and efficiently. Or, to hear more options, please dial 3..."
