Republican South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford has been saying for a while that he would turn down any stimulus money that comes his way via this economic stimulus bill. And as of yesterday, he made it official ... turning down about a quarter of his state's $2.8 billion share. He says, "Fundamentally, if you boil down what the stimulus means for South Carolina, it means we would go through the process of spending a bunch of money we don't have." Finally, a guy who gets it.

Then, Sanford likened the approach of the Obama administration to that of Robert Mugabe and Zimbabwe. He says, "What you're doing is buying into the notion that if we just print some more money that we don't have and send it to different states, we'll create jobs ... If that's the case, why isn't Zimbabwe a rich place? ... 'Cause they're printing money they don't have and sending it around to their different-- I don't know the towns in Zimbabwe but that same logic is being applied there with little effect."

Now enter James Clyburn, South Carolina Senator and carrier of a huge racial chip on his shoulder. Clyburn thinks that Sanford's comparison of Obama's stimulus package to Zimbabwe's economic policies is "beyond the pale." And according to The Politico, Clyburn suggested that the comment might carry a racial subtext. Clyburn says, "For him to compare the president of this country to Mugabe. ... It's just beyond the pale." For Congressional race whore Clyburn, everything is "beyond the pale." This guy has never seen an issue that didn't have some racial component. His day should be done and his type should be fading into the obscurity he so richly deserves.

What others are saying

  • Call it what it is .. stop the name games
Stimulus Money - is not "stimulus" its a farse. Why not call it Vote Buying Money or somethig similar?

Pick several of this name game junk and be real. "Fair Tax" - its a consumption tax noting fair about it its more the FARE tax for the fare of choosing to spend. Those in media and entertainment (Neal you are one) are just pandering to the stupid. Case in point this "Fairness Doctrine" or Workers "Freedom" of Choice garbage.

For golly sakes lets call it what it is.

As for Clyburn - he is acting similar to what you'd expect from a racist. Using the word "pale" that's cancerous words on his part.

Gov. Sanford, merely wants to use the governements' stolen treasure (our money) to pay down debt and maintain and allow the states to spend money in its own right.

Frankly, i see this provision in the FEDERAL Pork Bill that permits state legislature so accept $$ as a violation of states rights. Its not the job of the Federal Imperial Government to tell a state what it can and can't do. That is offensive. I am really getting ticked by all this federal mandating bunk.

Meanwhile - lets call a spade a spade. Clyburn is a Racist; Sanford is doing what he feels (as Gov. of the great state of SC) appropriate; which is why the citizens of SC elected him as opposed to oBozo and his cronies.
  • Zimbabwe Debacle
I think that says it all.

Zimbabwe is a Debacle. Under their current dictatorial leadership.

Problem that Clyburn has is in claiming racism for all the mostly WHITE people here in the U.S.A. trying to implement similiar political actions as the BLACK people in Zimbabwe.

Now... my point... is that Cylyburn is calling White people racist for denouncing what other White people are doing here in this country. All this does is prove Clyburn is an idiot.
  • South Carolina
How about this to show support to the Governor. This summer when vacations come around, spend your money in South Carolina. Support the state that show the principals of sound financial management.
  • More money for California
I agree with Edwin. Not the part about motives, but about where the money goes when turned down. It doesn't just evaporate, I'm sure it'll be reallocated. People who don't have our best interests at heart wrote the stimulus bill, so I'm sure it's full of loopholes for their pets. SC should figure out how to turn their portion of stimulus into something profitable so SC taxpayers aren't paying for that portion to go to CA. I take that back, if SC figures out how to actually benefit from the stimulus, that will open the door for another one.
  • Clyburn
    "...It's just beyond the pale."

Is it just me or does that statement contain racial subtext? Who is he calling "pale"? Or does he mean that this goes beyond what even an evil, racist white person would normally say?
  • racism defined
White people are inherently evil space goons, sent here from the Kwaytar Galaxy to battle their arch-enemies, the saintly black earthlings, who are incapable of feeling any sort of ill will towards any living creature.
  • China "worried" about US Treasury bills
China, who holds $1 trillion of US Gov't debt, has expressed its "concern" about US spending.

"Of course we are concerned about the safety of our assets. To be honest, I'm a little bit worried," Premier Wen Jiabao said at a news conference Friday after the closing of China's annual legislative session. "I would like to call on the United States to honor its words, stay a credible nation and ensure the safety of Chinese assets."

It's very reassuring to know the teleprompter puppet and his crack team of tax cheats are in charge, though.
Now that's change we can believe in.

Just a thought: what if the Chinese sell everything and decide to hold Euros instead?
  • OMG, WTF, and all that other stuff kids write these days
Notice how instead of discussing the real topic Sanford brought up, which is the absurdity of printing money out of thin air and distributing it, Clyburn automatically plays the race card. When you can't argue logic, argue race!
  • Gov. Sanford has coined a new phrase
"Mugabe" economics. Now that's change we can believe in.

And BTW, Clyburn offended me with his use of a racist term "beyond the pale". Where's race pimp Sharpton on this one? I'm surprised he's not holding a press conference in Columbia.
  • I'm offended
As an average white guy, I find the phrase "beyond the pale" to be an offensive racial slur. Can we find a more multicultural phrase, perhaps "over the rainbow," or something similar?
  • SC Governor
I can't believe what has happened in the last few months. I can't believe that America elected this person. A smart electorate would have sent this joker back to Chicago. I think this is Gov. Sanford's way of saying "shove it Obama". I live in North Myrtle Beach and I am proud of our Governor, but I am ashamed and embarrassed of this person that ignorant people elected.
  • Go Mark!
I live in Augusta, GA right across the river and love watching Sanford. The morons who run our government here in Augusta are Clyburn wannabes, so they watch him for marching orders. We'll be using the "beyond pale" phrase here soon I'm sure.
  • Rick's Comment
I agree, the money will still be taxed, it is not a gift. The point Pres Obama is making will add money to the system vs. the Govt. taking it out of circulation. It will be interesting if the IRS will penalize individuals for under withholding. Dang, I forgot the Timmy rule, no interest, no penalties, no foul.
  • SC $$$$
There is a provision in the bill where a state legislature can vote to take the money even if the gov does not want it.
  • Rick - Your $13
This "windfall" of $13 per paycheck is not a handout. All that is happening is that your employer will withhold less money from your upcoming paychecks.

If you think about it, this isn't even a tax cut. Since Obozo isn't lowering the tax rate, this additional money you receive in your paycheck comes from less be withheld!! As a result, when you do your taxes next year, you will owe that much more on your taxes because you had less withheld!! This scam they call a tax cut is no different than if you went to your company's HR and filled out a new W-4 and claimed additional exemptions. So, if I fill out a new W-4 and claim 15 exemptions and get an additional $200 per paycheck, can I call that a tax cut?????

Also note, don't go living high on the hog expecting that $13, you will not get that if you make more than $75K per year, because the Dems define you as rich at that level.
  • Sanford is building real credibility,
The GOP badly needs more principled pols like him. I hope Georgia Republicans are watching this.

Since the state has to pay for it whether they take the money or not, I can't blame them much for taking the money. If they take it, it should be refunded directly to state taxpayers.
  • Sanford & Clyburn
As a member of the former Palmetto Republic, here is my take on Sanford. He is not standing on principles. He is padding his resume for the next presidential primary. This is grand standing in order to prove he's a "hard-line" fiscal conservative.

When he returns the stimulus funds no real good comes from it. That money will still be spent and we will still have to repay it. But it won't be spent in SC and we'll get no benefit from it at all. Thanks a lot, Guv!

As for Clyburn... maybe Obama will give him a diplomatic post. He needs to get out and see the world, anywhere but here.
  • Ted....
I have to disagree with you Ted. I don't want to "shup and enjoy the gift", because it isn't a gift, wait till you have to pay taxes on it, then tell me what a gift it is to you.

I don't any part of the so-called stimulus bill, so thanks but no thanks.

I choose not to participate in this spending scam!!!
  • states right.........
If a state turnsdown or refuses stimulis money can it somehow withold part of federal taxes(maybe gasoline tax)that it collected that would be paying for other states that took stimulis money? That seem only fair.
  • Rick's Comment
Rick, you are missing the point. It is your money anyway. They are throwing you a few crumbs and saying "shut up and enjoy the gift" from the Government. Have a dessert and coffee after dinner on Obama.
  • Take the Money or Not
Sanford is standing up to his principles and also protecting his population. He is also saving me some money. Pres. obama is trying to lure all the govenors into the fold.

This kind of reminds me of the old joke where the Texan walks up to a pretty woman and offers her $50,000 to spend the night with him. She answerw quickly, YES. He then offers her $10 for the night and she answers, what do you think I am. His response is, I already know what you are, I am just trying to determine the price.

Gov. Sanford did not accept any price, Kudos for him.
  • Agree with Sanford...
I agree with Mark Sanford and the other governor's taking a stand on this out of control spending!

So what can I do as a citizen to help support these governor's. Well I want to reject the bailout money that I am suppose to be getting in my monthly check. Yes, the money would be nice, but I can also do without the 13 or 15 dollars a week estimates. So the question now remains how do I tell this administration that I don't want their handout?

Let's see how many other American will reject this bailout money from the government.
  • Clyburn
Unfortunately this arrogant windbag is permanently in office. And look at how wonderful his district is, the "corrdior of shame". It is amazing to me that people don't vote him out of office. I certainly try every two years.

Sanford is a leader, not a politician (I worked on his capaign in 2002). He doesn't care about the political consequences of this, he does care that he leaves the state in a better condition than he found it. Which he is well positioned to do.
  • Great Comparison
Most importantly, Sanford better NOT apologize to this race pimp. This pimp cried racism last week saying that Sanford not taking the stimulus money is racist.

Exact comparison - Mugabe is taking farms and property from white farmers and redistributing it to blacks. Obama, in essence, is doing the same thing - taking more and more money and propoerty from the achievers and giving it to the people who pay nothing in taxes, who are disproportionately minorities.

BTW, I thought we were a "nation of cowards" because we don't discuss race?
  • "beyond the pale"
As a caucasian male, I find that term highly offensive! I demand that the NAACP apologize to me and provide restitution. I think $25 million might adequately make up for my humiliation and pain.
  • Mark Sanford
Finally, a Repubic with gonads. His comparison to Obama's "stimulus" funds and Zimbabwe is a good analogy, as far as simply printing the currency a nation "needs" is concerned. His stand took courage. The usual charge of racism was to be expected and should be treated as exactly what it is, an attempt at intimidation.

Much more interesting (and frightening), however, are the other ways Mugabe took over Zimbabwe - from The Philadelphia Trumpet: "Zimbabwe used to be even more prosperous than South Africa was at its peak. But Robert Mugabe set off on his post-colonial reforms, social programs, government handouts and land grabs. How did he pay for it all? First he redistributed the land in order to fill his coffers and buy favors. Next, he started nationalizing other sectors of the economy, including some of the world's richest mines. Eventually he nationalized and asserted complete control over the nation's reserve bank so he could print whatever money he wanted to pay the bills. This policy destroyed the value of Zimbabwe's currency, wiping out what little savings his people had left". Full text is at:
    http://www.thetrumpet.com/index.php?q=5977.0.113.0

What happened in Zimbabwe and is predicted to happen in South Africa is far too close to what is taking place in America today. Think it can't happen here? Wake up, people!
  • Sanford
Sanford is a little bit out of line -- not for racial reasons, but economic ones. I think Obama is going to cause inflation, but nothing approaching the *80 billion percent* Zimbabwe is seeing.

Still, you have to wonder what Clyburn will say in 2010 when 10% inflation is hitting his constituents the hardest.
  • Clyburn is Right. . .
. . .this IS beyond the pale, and Robert Mugabe has REALLY been insulted. . .

    (evil grin)
  • Stimulus money
I love how people are criticizing the governors who criticized the plan...but are taking the money anyway. It's kind of silly. I mean - it's tough to compete economically when you don't have a level playing field (i.e., one state takes the money and one does not).
HUGE kudos to Gov Sanford for turning it down. Because now he's NOT on a level playing field with other states - AND - his state will have to help pay back the money. But he's standing by his principles, and that is something we don't see often these days.
  • It's good to see a politican stand up against what he believes is wrong. I don't like the stimulus package any more than most other intelligent people who look past Obama's first 50 days, and the impact it's going to have on our taxes.

There is the other side of turning down the money that no one has mentioned. They won't get the influx of money into their economy, but all their taxes are still going to go up to pay it back.

They are not going to just raise taxes on the other 49 states because SC turned down some money.
  • Hell No Stimulus
Mark is keeping good company, as of late last night Gov. Perry of Texas turned down 550 million, Haley Barbor turned down 93 million, and Bobby Jindle turned down a portion of his stimulus. All are complaining about the bounty of strings that are attached. All fear the unfunded costs 2 to 3 years down the road where the stimulus years budget becomes the base, hence a new federal "Unfunded Mandate" that drives up their costs and taxes. A big applause to these gents because THEY FINALLY GET IT!
These are going to have to be the drivers of a new budget responsibilty as it was in the 90's with Newt leading the way.
  • thin-skinned...or is that racist to
Clyburn is a race-pimp. The next four years are going to be difficult if any criticism of this administration is met with calls of racism. Sanford's reference to Mugabe has nothing to do with Zimbabwe's crippling inflation. It's because he's black and running his nation into the ground. Give me a break. I think that it is an excellent reference. It shows the potential we are up against here in the U.S. Our illustrious government is writing checks that can't be cashed. There are three ways to pay for the policies: Taxation, Borrow, or Print. None of these should be an option. Cut the bureaucracy!
  • Mark Sanford
What about the states taking the money and then cutting a check to tax PAYERS?
  • Clyburn
is just as bad as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Worse even; he's an elected official with power. If a white person breathes he's being racist in Clyburns eyes.

I'm from SC and support Sanford's position. Unfortunately SC has set it up so that the Governor of the state has very little power. The legislature has way too much.

I'm not in Clyburn's district so I can't vote against him, unfortunately.
  • beyond the pale?
doesn't this phrase carry racial undertones implying how white Sanford is?
  • Beyond the pale
Speaking as someone who is pale, I can say that this whole situation is certainly beyond me.
I was sarcastically thinking about the obvious racial slur until I got to the part where someone jumped up and said, apparently seriously, that it's a racial thing.
Of course it is. Everything is. A bunch of now deceased people pressed a bunch of other now deceased people into slavery some time ago and everything will continue to be racial because no one can go back and undo that.
  • Mark Sanford
I live in SC and Mr. Sanford has done wonderful things for us in this state. I'm proud to see he is standing up for the people once again. He has fought against pork in our state since his election and truly knows the meaning of phiscal responisibility and common sense.

Now if we can just get rid of Lyndsy Grahm, and James Clyburn.
  • go mark
I am from south carolina and Sanford is catching hell but I am in full support of what he does. Remember when that old saying, "there is no free lunch." Our state senate is full of fundamentalist and RINOs and Sanford keeps them in check. I cannot believe race is being brought into this. When liberals called george bush the devil is that racist? Obama cannot get a pass on completley irresponsible spending and signing 17 executive orders in 50 days just because he is black. He is acting like a latin American despot. Btw sanford should join the libertarians he is way to ressponsible with money to be a republican.
  • Clyburn
Clyburn is an idiot and I can say that as I live in SC.
