What others are saying

  • Is Obama a teleprompter puppet?
Just last week, Obama's presentation of Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as head of Health and Human Services created an awkward silence between the Obama and Sebelius presentations while everyone had to wait for the teleprompters to be lowered to be moved out of the way. Politico mentioned the "uncomfortable laughter" the delay produced from the audience.

One Obama advisor is quoted as saying that Mr. Obama is looking at installing a computer screen in White House podiums so "it would make it easier for the comms (communications) guys to pass along information without being obvious about it." The notion that a computer technician is queuing up the Obama puppet answers to questions is disturbing, to say the least. What if the wrong info appears on the screen?

Some have noted that Mr. Obama's stumbling speeches have occurred when teleprompters have malfunctioned. The Politico reports that sock puppet Obama's vacation to Hawaii last year was actually used to try "wean[ing] himself off of the device ... But no such luck." Or should I say, "mission impossible".

I wonder if they have designed a teleprompter to work on European current for the G20 summit in London...what if it malfunctions? Will there be more stammering, stuttering, stumbling, and the resultant "awkward laughter" from the European heads of state?
  • Cartoon
This is funny, sad and true.

Doesn't say much, if this is the best harvard has to offer. What a clown puppet.
  • Caracatures
Why is it that most political cartoonists caracature politicians with having huge ears? The last thing I'd want to imply was that our politicians are capable of LISTENING to us...
  • Racism
Anyone wanna bet how much more time goes by before someone yells "Racism" is behind the teleprompter observations?
  • glass half-full
Obama is an incredible lame-brain, as are many great actors. That doesn't mean he can't function as a masterful puppet for four years.
  • Public Speaking
Yes other politicians use Teleprompters. However, they look at the audience most of the time. The president looks like he's watching a tennis match. I.E. look to the left, look to the right, look to the left...
  • I like the Irkle, "Did I do that?" photoshop better
I like Mr. Samuelson's caricatures and cartoons though. Keep posting them.
  • The difference
I don't think Obama is wrong for using a teleprompter. It's modern speech technology and does not--in itself--show inadequacy.

BUT you can tell when he is speaking off the cuff because he stammers and says "uh" more than Bush did for his entire 8 years.

You can tell the man is struggling to say what the people want to hear rather than what he truly believes. His true beliefs obviously slip out from time to time, and maybe someday soon we will have a clear picture of this man we made our country's leader.
  • Teleprompter
I agree Bush was not the most articulate but he said what he felt and stood behind his decisions. I will take a president who fumbles his words but makes right decisions & follows his heart over an articulate president than relies on the teleprompter and cannot speak from the heart.
  • I wish Bush had a teleprompter
I think Obama learned a great lesson from Bush... use a teleprompter. Bush was the most inarticulate speaker we've had in the White House since William Henry Harrison came down with pneumonia. America needs a president that can functionally communicate after Bush mangled the English language. I wish people would get over the teleprompter thing, it only allows for an individual to deliver prepared statements while looking at the public instead of looking at a podium. It is Communications 101, and doesn't bother me a bit.
  • Red Herring? I don't think so...AWK
Hmm, seems the sock puppet is becoming the subject of mockery....red herring? Methinks not--follow this for laughs.

NO, I'd say the sock puppet has been exposed as a stuttering, stammering idiot and the left is terrified.
  • Debates not a good test this time
The debates with McCain were lame on both sides so winning them is not saying a lot! And yeah, 3x5 would be more impressive as they only have bullet points and the person speaking actually has to know their subject to "fill in the lines". It's the using of a teleprompter EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!! Geez, catch up will ya?
  • Joel Rocks!
Finally! Joel's been kinda slow with his cartoons, been suffering from Joel withdrawal LOL!

Yes Obama has given impromptu speeches, and you can tell a definite difference with/without. He's not quite so eloquent, and he does stumble from time to time, without it. It goes to show, IMHO, that people only hear the dynamic and power of the voice, not the substance of what's being said.

    Keep them coming Joel!
  • "Teleprompter" issue is red herring by the right
Almost all politicians of both parties (or more likely their speechwriters) script their speeches in advance. If he spoke from 3*5 cards, rather than a teleprompter, would that make you happier? Then you'd probably accuse him of being behind the times with technology. You think the speeches of W were all impromptu?

Obama has done plenty of appearances in which he has spoken off the cuff. Remember the 3 debates that all said he won except for Fox News viewers? He has held press conferences. He has held town halls with audiences that were not pre-screened for political correctness as was the case with almost all of W's appearances.
