TAXING YOUR HEALTHCARE, TO PAY FOR GOVERNMENT HEALTHCARE

Can we stop for a moment and think back to the presidential campaign. John McCain proposed the idea of taxing employee health benefits. At the time, I said I disagreed with the idea --- I understood his reasoning, but knew the idea would be very unpopular. Now Barack Obama is president, guess what he wants to do? Why, he wants to tax employee health benefits! And I still disagree with the idea. During the campaign, Obama called this idea "the largest middle-class tax increase in history." But now that he is supporting it, let's see how many Obama sycophants jump on board with the idea. If Obama really wants this to work he can insert a wealth-envy angle here. Maybe only nail the benefits of high-income earners.

Here's how he is going to get around it ... Obama will never directly propose the idea, but he won't oppose the idea if Congress proposes it. Isn't that clever? More change you can believe in.

What others are saying

  • taxing healthcare
Why should I have to pay for these lazy, people and illegal aliens to have health care? I work for a health insurance company why do I have to pay for Octo-mom who has a doctor who inseminates someone who wants kids but not the responsibility of them or Jose who is taking food and jobs from my family members? I was on welfare and I worked my azz off just to get out of the system and get a job to support my family. Now, people come in say they need help and once they get the help they abuse it then, I along with other taxpayers have to foot the bill. This country needs to wake up and realize that the reason this country is in such sorry shape it because people are too damn lazy to get a job and pick themselves up to make something of their life.
  • going offshore
If they are going to tax the medical benefits and slowly force us into Socialized health care, I will go offshore for my medical care as do the Brits and Canadians. PlanetHospital.com anyone?
  • taxing healthcare
At least with the McCain plan, as Barry mentioned, there was a tax credit to offset the taxes that the majority of us paid. Those without insurance were supposed to use the tax credit to pay for insurance. (Probably wouldn't happen) Now those of us with insurance will be forced to pay taxes to cover insurance for those who don't have insurance, either by chance or by choice. So I guess it is a huge incentive to drop your employer health care plan and take the government free insurance.
  • Taxing Healthcare Benefits
Guess this is the way they plan on getting everyone on universal healthcare. Make private healthcare to expensive to have.
  • Healthcare affordability
The optometrist gave me a prescription for new glasses, so I went price shopping. The first question I was asked was, "do you have insurance?". When I replied "no", I was persuaded to leave by the (lack of) affordable choices. When I replied "yes", there were a lot more choices - and the co-pay was at least as much as the glasses would have cost without insurance. In other words ...
Let's get rid of health insurance as we know it today and go back to "pay as you go". It'll be painful in the short run, but free market pressure will cause prices and services to once again converge.

Universal health care will bankrupt the system.

On the medical side, I go to the doctor, he gives me a bill for $200. Medicare says, "Oh, no, our standard for that service is $100 and we'll pay 80% of it, the doctor can bill you for $20. When I get the doctor's bill, I send it off to my secondary insurer, who says "We'll pay 80% of the @20". So, my direct out-of-pocket cost was $4. Yet the doctor thought what he did was worth $200. How much was it really worth? I asked the doctor (we've been friends since high school) and he said the fee would've been $65 if the transaction had just been between him and me. But because of all the overheads involved, he had to charge 3 times what the service was worth in order to break even on the deal.

It's amusing to think that we have to have universal health care from cradle to grave when virtually all of the costs happen in the last 18 months. It's another Ponzi scheme, just like Social Security
  • Taxing Healthcare
Unmentioned in Neal's blip about Obamee taxing healthcare was that, yes, McCain proposed taxing healthcare but, unlike Obamee's "plan", McCain proposed that families would receive up to a $5,000 tax credit to pay for that tax.
It's time we drop the whole system. Let's not have for-profit health insurance companies dictate our healthcare terms. Likewise, let's not have the Fed Govt dictate those terms. Instead, let's roll the clock back to 1998, reversing these mistakes we've made by changing for-profit health insurance companies back to mutual insurance companies - ie owned by their policuholders.
  • President Obama voting Present
With Nancy Pelosi writing the stimulus bill and Congress propsoing a Health Care Tax, doesn't this seem like President Obama is continuing his Illinois Senate ways and voting "present" on all the important issues.
  • Hussein's running a shell game scam.
If they really wanted us to have accessible and affordable health care they would be letting people write health care costs off their taxes, not taxing people's policies. If the goal is to wreck our health care system and make it so as few as possible can afford it, the dp has the right policies and plan.
  • High earners and Ins
The tax increase that I think is discussed is where you can now put health ins, dental ins, etc is a cafeteria plan so it is not subject to taxes. Yes,this would be a very HUGE increase in taxes and it my job to oversee the cafeteria plan at work. As for the "high earners" which I think you mean mostly the small business owners, who use the plan for themselves and employees, sorry, but we have to charge back to these owners on the K-1 those benefits now anyway. Now if they want to tax the amount my employer pays as part of my employement and treat it as earnings, this is going to be massive folks!! I do this for a living, so I can run the numbers and the "95%", oh well, sucks to be us because we will end up paying for everything.
