The governor of New York has officially decided that the best way to make up for government inadequacies and budget shortfalls is to tax the evil, filthy rich. The plan will increase income taxes for New Yorkers making more than $500,000 a year by 31%. Yes, that's right ... a 31% increase in income taxes on the evil rich in New York. Those making between $250,000 and $500,000 will see their income taxes increase by 14.5%.

The result, I can guarantee, will be to drive away wealth. People will find other ways to get around this. It will be just like California in that taxes will drive away productive members of society and leave the state relying on Mexicans and Hollywood for survival.

It's time for a sequel to "Escape from New York."

What others are saying

  • keep northerners away-send them back
I agree with Garrett-unfortunately, based on my recent kid soccer trip to mid-Atlanta, I would say they're already here. Seriously, how often do you here of a Southerner moving above Mason-Dixon? Only when forced to! Go back home! Go away!
  • Newsflash for Copyleft
Copyleft, for once you are right-- the rich don't have your best interests at heart, nor should they. I'm going to let you in on a little secret: People that make a lot of money are not making sacrifices, working 12-15+ hours a day running businesses, taking risks that most people are too scared to even think about, so that they can take care of YOU. They are doing it to better their situation for themselves and their families.

You, on the other hand, sit around and think of ways to legally take their money by force, and try to justify it with a bunch of horsesqueeze.

You need to think about that last statement very long and hard, Copyleft, and any other liberal reading this. Just think about it. If you ever wondered why high-achievers view you as parasitic scum of the earth, this should really open your eyes.

I am really aghast with that statement-- seriously. Just who do you think you are, that the rest of the world needs to work extra hard to take care of YOU? And just what are you providing in return? Please, tell me, what do you think makes that "fair"-- what value are you actually providing in return for this so called "right" to be taken care of?

    I eagerly await your response.
  • Coincidence?
I believe I remember seeing an article a few month's back about NY state losing billions in revenue because of lower (or no) bonuses in the financial sector.
    Oh yea, here it is....

    http://www.bizjournals.com/austin/othercities/albany/stories/2008/11/24/daily16.html?brthrs=1

Meanwhile, lets figure out how to get more tax refunds to people who pay no taxes......

I don't want to cry "socialism!", but what other direction are we headed??
  • good-bye, NY
LOL...I gotta say, you go, Lawrence Stevens! That was funny, I don't care who ya are. *shrug* If I was a wealthy person, I'd be hauling a$$ to Texas, Georgia, or anywhere else except NY or CA. Weather is better down south anyway. There's what, 9 million people in NY? And how few of them are paying all the taxes again? That's just insane. Are the rest of them on welfare? As a long haul trucker, I refused to even deliver there. NY City is just creepy to me. And the cops there never hesitate to use any opportunity to give out tickets to OTR drivers. Guess they need the revenue.
  • Lets punish the RICH... (It's only fair)
We need to punish those filthy rich by taxing them more. I am confident these filthy rich people will stand still while we hurt them - it is their duty to stand still. Who would possibly move when we are exacting appropriate punishment for daring to be rich. Is there a way to encourage rich people to produce more money, and we could tax them even more to make it more fair(er). Yeah, that's the ticket, and we generate more money too.

Quick.. convene a session of the house so we can spend this new found revenue stream.

-An excerpt from "I am an idiot, but I can sure govern the hell out of you!"
  • NY Taxing the Rich? That's a Good Thing for Texas.
Gotta be honest, Neal. CA and NY can tax the hell out of the rich as far as I'm concerned. Why? Because it will run off capital from those sorry-*ss states and it will, quite likely, end up in TX. Woo-hooo!!! Good on us! We're doing pretty well compared to other states but an additional infusion of capital and wealth-producing individuals into our state's economy will help us further to weather the storm that's coming. Yeaaaaa Governors Patterson and Schwarzenneger! Run off yer rich! We'll take 'em. . . all ya got! Yeee-haaaaaaaaa!!!
  • A special message for Copyleft
Copyleft typed: "I wonder if enough Americans have figured out that the rich don't have our best interests at heart."

Yeah, Copy, you're right. Ever since that tele-puppet Obama was elected, I've figured out that the best way to survive his "regime" is to fire staff, reduce my income 60% by working less, and move my financial assets offshore into safe havens.

So yes, I don't have YOUR best interests at heart. YOUR best interests consist of transferring MY hard-earned income into YOUR pocket. And that, you fascist liberal moron, will NEVER happen. So if people leave NY for states with lower tax burdens, just write it up to the failed, socialist policies of the past. The problem with socialism is that eventually, you run out of other people's money.
  • Me love your money!!!
"Give me all your money, munch munch munch. Me love to take your money. Munch munch mucnh. Me love other people's money. It's not fair of you not to give your money. Munch munch munch....Don't be afraid, I don't hurt you, unless you don't give me your money!!!!!!"

    - Quote from the new PBS charachter about to appear on Sesame Street.
  • I hope they change their minds ...
The problem with this is that when northeastern politicians do things to make life even more miserable, a bunch of northeasters expand out to the rest of the country and try to turn whatever wonderful place they just adopted into the same type of dogsqueeze hole they just left. See northern VA for reference.
The liberals need to keep the northeast attractive for other liberals or they will spread like locusts across the nation.
  • This ought to work out well ...
My kids live in New Jersey and commute to New York City. They get taxed coming and going: New York City, county and state tax, New Jersey tax, don't forget the bus/ferry charge.

I don't live there. I get taxed too much. The problem is, those politicians (Democrap, Repoopycan, no matter, they all think they own your bank account) all earn their livings by taxing the living daylights out of one group in order to give a free ride to another group.
  • I'm not looking for a handout!
"I wonder if enough Americans have figured out that the rich don't have our best interests at heart."

I'm wasn't expecting the rich to have my best interests at heart, nor the government. __I__, the individual, have my best interests at heart.

Walmart is out to make a buck, not be kind and benevolent. They have figured out how/where to buy things I want at the lowest prices, and are passing those savings on to me. And this is not because they are sweet and kind, but to undercut their competition and get my money! We both benefit from this. See how this works?

If someone is going to assert I am greedy, then what stops me from accusing all others of being greedy too? Only when we ALL make the EXACT same amount of money, can the greedy word be truly dropped. You want to go there? I don't.
  • Cause and Effect: Simply another fact that liberals emotions won't let them understand
Liberals like Coplyleft who commented earlier don't seem to understand the facts and logic behind conservatives positions. I understand that emotions run their reasonings, and facts and logic mean nothing to them, but they don't seam to understand cause and effect that well either. If they don't start listening to reason, then they will continue to screw themselves over. What is going on in NY with the proposed higher taxes to liberals sounds great. But when Neal talks about the exodus of wealthy that will happen Copyleft scoffs at Neal. Does he and other liberals not understand cause and effect, that if the taxes are raised at such a high amount, that many wealthy are not going to just sit around and 'take it' and instead will move out of state somewhere where the taxes aren't so high. It's basic facts and logic, albeit that may be hard for liberals to grasp. Copyleft only plays the emotion card saying that Neal is sounding the "victim" siren and copyleft tries to tell us that the rich don't have our best interests at heart. Copyleft has no idea how the world works does he? Our country grew to be a great country because everyone had their own best interests at heart. Copyleft only focuses on the emotional part completely ignoring the logical argument. Maybe the logical argument is a bit too hard for him to grasp. tisk tisk
  • Across the river
Suddenly, living in New Jersey is more of an option than a joke.
  • Escape from LA
Neal, I know most of your fans are glued to the tv mad every day watching fox news instead of doing something fun. But I expect more from you. You should know there was a sequel to Escape from NY, it is Escape from LA. I havent seen it but I heard it wasnt nearly as good. Peace
  • NYC Flight
I guess the Governor of NY has decided that he wants to do his part to help out the housing markets in NJ and Connecticut. Expect an increase in housing demand there.
  • Wealthy?
This is an open invitation to all the wealthy in New York. Close your business and move it and your family to Texas (I like Houston). There is NO state income tax. There is a slightly higher sales tax, but that tax pays for 90% of all state operations. Texas is starting to feel the economic pinch, so a new business will have a ready, able, intelligent and legal (if you use e-verify) workforce. We are a right to work state, so take good care of your employees and they won't unionize. New York can tax whomever they want, but they can't FORCE anyone tho live in that hellhole.
  • Soak the Rich
California has been relocating its producers to other states for years (Nevada say's thank you!). So to will it be in NY.
When will folks like Copy figure out that these folks provide jobs to the slobbering masses through construction on their home, car repairs, cleaning services, and even the building doorman. I just have one question when was the last time a poor person offered you a job?
  • put a face on it
Lets put a face on those he wants to tax. He is taxing the Huxtables. One was a lawyer and one was a baby doc. together the made more then the magical $250,000
So the next time they want to tax the evil rich think the Cosby show and the evil rich that were the Huxtables.
  • Sequel to Escape from NY
There already was a sequel to Escape from New York. It's called Escape from L.A., which is appropriate since California is the state on the other coast that keeps passing ridiculous taxing measures against the most productive members of the population.
  • Really sounding the "victim" siren this time
It seems particularly loud lately, doesn't it? "Pity the poor, suffering, abused rich people! Waaaahhh!"

I wonder if enough Americans have figured out that the rich don't have our best interests at heart.
  • soak the rich
"The two-tier tax plan would bring in $4 billion annually"

This is assuming the current population of wealthy people stay in New York. In reality it will be nowhere near this amount.

It's funny to watch liberals assume their tax policies won't effect the actions of people they are taxing.
