How about a quote from H.L. Mencken:

"The erroneous assumption is to the effort that the aim of public education is to fill the young of the species with knowledge and awaken their intelligence .... Nothing could be further from the truth. The aim of public education is not to spread enlightenment at all; it is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized citizenry, to put down dissent and originality. That is its aim in the United States, whatever the pretensions of politicians, pedagogues and other such montebanks, and that is its aim everywhere else."

Has a ring of truth to it, doesn't it? Making you a bit uncomfortable about sending your kids to a government school, isn't it?

    Rasilio:

Americans are much more free today than in the late 19th century. To say otherwise is utterly ridiculous. After Reconstruction, blacks had no political rights and few rights of any kind. What amounted to slavery, though obviously under different names, still took place. In cities, immigrants were treated horribly in industrial conditions, with many even being killed. They were also subject to racist subjugation. American Indians were forced into reservations. Amidst this, huge numbers of people were denied any political rights and had no freedom in the conditions they faced. Labor organizers were met with military opposition. Debt and overwhelming corporate power was used to coerce people into obedience. Upper class women who were not subject to this were still expected to live as second class citizens. Corruption was extremely widespread, at the expense of nearly everyone. And largely uneducated people could offer little opposition to all of this.

We are much, much more free now than then outside of false romantic images of the past.

It should be noted that by 1870 public education had already taken root, though only primary education was widespread.

As public education grew in the next century, people gained much more freedom as entrenched social stratification weakened considerably and people at large held political influence. And areas with stronger public schooling initiatives developed faster, notably the Northeast.

In fact, public education is in large part what separates us from the third world. It allows us to have a middle class.

Educated people are always more able to make decisions for themselves and play a part in society, and public education made it available to more than just the rich. In other words, public education gives people options in life, which is tantamount to freedom. People who understand the world around them are also more difficult to manipulate and control.
  • Reply to Lent Visor on Public Schooling
    You say (quote)
Public schooling has been extensively associated with greater freedom and prosperity
    (end quote)

    Prove it.

Public schooling correlates to greater prosperity because both are causes of industrialization, they have no direct relationship to each other whatsoever.

As for freedom it does not even correlate at all. When were Americans more free, 1870 or today? The growth of Public school attendance with the deteroriation of personal freedom move in almost lock step.

    Tadpole:

First of all, that list doesn't prove your point. Only about 25% of them were even nominally Christian according to that list, and most of those were extremely lapsed or even excommunicated. Hardly "bible believing christians". I'm not sure I'd ascribe too much to the list, though.

Religious people can make good scientists, but they do have to rely on evidence rather than their own faith in that endeavor. Religion can't make good science.

Science teachers shouldn't present opposing viewpoints to evolution as the origin of species because there are no scientific ones of any major consequence, and the same is true of the age of the earth (at least insofar as it is much older than 10,000 years). There's obviously a lot more uncertainty with more specific issues, but there's no real scientific contention over the theory of evolution.

Obviously, some people think God created everything based on various holy books, but that is religious, not scientific. It's fine for someone to believe a book is the incontrovertible truth, but it's never correct to conflate that faith with scientific evidence. It has no place in a science curriculum, and our schools don't really teach comparative religion.

Note that evolution as a process is completely factually real. You can observe it. The theory of evolution that explains it has held true through extensive testing.

Our understanding of global warming is not nearly as complete, but there is a multitude of evidence to support our understanding of anthropogenic global warming, and a lot of the effects can be observed. The greenhouse effect itself is well understood. Overall, the evidence is overwhelming that we are contributing to what is a global change in climate. Now, there is some scientific evidence that points in the other direction, unlike with evolution, but it doesn't disprove the idea or even really hold weight against all the other evidence. Also, global warming is not fundamental to our modern understanding of the world, unlike evolution, so it's not really as important in terms of general education. It would obvious help our politics if people understood it better, though.

Social justice is not a scientific theory, it is a sociopolitical ideal. It shouldn't be taught as science, and neither should it's alternatives (notably the pseudoscientific, poorly named, stupid, and morally disgusting social darwinism).

There's no real scientific evidence that the earth is only 10,000 years. Anything COULD BE, but that doesn't mean it should be taught as science.
  • Public Schools
Public schooling has been extensively associated with greater freedom and prosperity. No where has this been more evident than our own country. Countries with "more public" schooling tend to have better public education.

There's also no real reason to believe that most of our private schools are any better than our decent public ones. They're problematic in how they suck away contributing families from public schools and let people ignore the condition of their public schools, in what becomes an unfortunate cycle.
  • Book Written By Teacher of the Year
This reminds me of a link Boortz had roughly 2 years ago to an online book written by a man that had been NYC's teacher of the year (IRC).

He looked at the history of education and the people who developed the education systems that are used in the U.S. and other industrialized nations and found that their main goal was to mold people that were smart enough to work in a factory but not smart enough to question their betters.

The gentleman made a very compelling case along these lines. I checked briefly to see if I could find the link but I was unable to. Perhaps it could be reposted at Nealz Nuze.
  • AWK
Your views on religion I agree on, I'm more a fiscal conservative, but still side with the conservatives on matters of personal responsibility versus welfare. To me, freedom of religion also means freedom FROM religion if one so chooses. Evolution is the only thing we can study hands on, I suppose if some want to have creationism also taught, maybe we could work that in or just leave it up to parents.

However, the extra 3-5% tax is on your entire earnings if over whatever limit is considered "Higher Income". That limit seems to change every week. But it is not going to be on the about OVER that limit.

And like Boortz pointed out, you earned that money so you don't have to give back something that belongs to you to begin with. If you want to donate that's ok. But I prefer voluntary donations not forced.

I didn't catch this discussion till late in the day so no one will probably read this anyway....
  • It is the teachers fault (reply to Government Teacher
So yeah, like every kid in your classroom comes from a dysfunctional home right?

No, they don't do they, but then the ones who do really aren't the problem are they?

Can't kick them out of school because then you might just have to lay off a few teachers and the Union just can't have that.

And that is really the point. Even the good teachers (and there are many) are guilty because they support and defend a Union which is actively opposed to any policy or program which would weaken it, even if it benefits the students.

In otherwords unless you actively oppose the union it does not matter how good of a teacher you are, you have sold your soul to the union and are smack dab in the center of the blame for the ills of the American public education system.
  • Mencken's Quotation
I had to look up Mencken to see who he was. After learning he appreciated Nietzsche, I have to admit I became skeptical. While I appreciate Nietzsche, I distrust anyone who does.
I'm working two jobs and going to grad school to be a teacher. Not excited about it, but I agree that government schools are by and large a solvent to intelligence, initiative, and independence. I got through government school by being kicked out for being the aforementioned adjectives. Watching my son go through government schools is painful and I am hoping to change that this next year with a private school.
  • Foreign Schools (Reply to William)
Apparently you haven't worked with too many of these "Well Educated" foreigners.

Are there some? Certainly just as some in America seem to be able to educate themselves despite the educational system. On average however they are no better educated than Americans. Yes, they do better on standardized tests but then no employer has ever asked me to take a standardized test a part of my job (and only once was I asked to take a test, the Wonderlic, as part of the interview process).

Simply put, their "better education" does not translate once you leave the ivy covered walls of academia, then there is the cultural factor. This has nothing to do with Education per se but there is a reason why the greatest creative minds in the world are almost all American. Our culture actually tolerates and rewards individuality and creative thought rather than preaching conformity and group identity.

The down side of course is our educational system is doing it's best to eliminate that from our kids.

[To avoid confusion, your words are preceded with ~. Mine with *]
~As a matter of fact, my spouse and I DO in fact do pretty well, with good jobs at Fortune 500 companies. And, you know what, we will pay a little more under the Obama tax plan.
*Buy the latest release of any tax software - load the CD, it updates with NEW taxcode. It ain't over till the fat lady is on foodstamps... [Fair Tax supporter]
~The top 2 marginal tax rates will go from 33%/35% today to 36%/39.6% under the Obama proposal. So, we'll pay an extra 3% or so on the last few thousand dollars of our HH income.
*Wrong - your entire income will be taxed.
~And you know what? I don't mind. Like that extra few hundred bucks is going to make a big deal.
*You’ve seized another opportunity to brag. I’d be worried. Companies cut expenses by firing at the top, saving more jobs. Why not donate some of your extra money to pay for abortions – or stem cell research?
~Our American system has allowed me to do pretty well . . . not megawealthy, but nonetheless a comfortable life . . . and I really don't mind giving a little something back at a time of economic crisis. How about that concept, uh -- a little sacrifice for the national good. Patriotism is more than flag-waving and "I support our troops" bumper stickers on gas-guzzling SUVs, you know.
*I haven’t mentioned what kind of car I drive, claimed to be a patriot - or made mention of troops or flags.
~(Yes, go ahead, write the angry retorts that some leftist lunatic equates paying taxes with patriotism)
    * Do you need government force to compel you to give? If you want to call it patriotism …you’re a patriot!
~I know it drives conservatives crazy that educated, higher income, urban people now vote democratic. Conservatives have lost this voting block due to their backwards-looking stances on the "cultural issues" like abortion, stem cell research, Terry Schiavo, attempts to sneak creationism into the schools, and so forth.
*I never claimed to be conservative. I haven’t given a stance on these issues - but they’re NOT cultural. Abortions and stem cell research should not be funded through taxation. Start a non-profit organization–funded by donations. A lot of people think this is about legalizing stem cell research. It’s NOT ILLEGAL. Hold telethons to raise money!
~If the repoublican party abandons its lunatic Taliban wing, I'll be happy to come into the republican party.
*I don’t care how you vote or label yourself. Labels discourage thought/responsibility. Labels are the equivalent of RACISM. Replace racism with political party in the definition:
    rac•ism n.
The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

AWK said: "the bible is (not) the absolute source of literal infallible truth about everything"

From that, Smooth concluded: "Their agenda is to institutionalize statism, the belief in the state, over all else. This is fascism, pure and simple."

WOW! That's quite an impressive leap you've made there... and without a motorcycle, even! Knievel would be proud.

Explain, please, how you got from Point A (The Bible is not the infallible source of all truth) to Point B (Worship the state, mortal fools!)?

    This oughta be good!
  • Teachers at fault?
I agree there are lots of problems within our public schools, but don't lay the blame totally on the backs of the teachers. It is hard to teach children who come from homes where school and learning is not a priority. When children come to school from dysfunctional families where there is abuse or neglect, we have a difficult time engaging them in the learning process.

I know there are some teachers who probably should not be in a classroom teaching, and you are right that some of the rules will not allow these incompetent teachers to be fired.

Please do not tar all of us with the same brush, as there are many caring and very competent teachers out there working overtime to help these children become productive citizens.

  • Freethinker
It is supposed to make sense, yes. If you take the time to read more than one post made by AWK, it might make more sense to you also. Of course, I am not infallible. I may have assumed some things about AWK. If I have, I am sorry to have jumped to conclusions. The ONLY reason I am saying that is because of your question.

I really don't think I'm wrong though. I'm just wondering this now:

What does Freethinker think about? Is Freethinker really a freethinker as the name might suggest? ...or is Freethinker someone who doesn't think very hard about what he/or she is reading?
  • AWK
Your comment is typical of those that demand the free exchange of ideas as long as those are ideas you agree with. Many renowned scientists were also bible believing Christians - http://www.adherents.com/people/100_scientists.html - so clearly, despite claims (such as yours) that the two are mutually exclusive, the belief in God and pursuit of science can quite happily co-exist.

I happen to live in Kansas, am a Christian, and have been homeschooling my 6th, 7th, and 9th grade children since Nov 2008. We did this because the too many teachers lack the will to enforce existing rules, spend too much time showing movies unrelated to the field of study, and often only present one side of an argument.

I want my children to know about the theory of evolution, the theory of global warming, and the theory of social justice - but I want them also to know the opposing viewpoints are as well.

Aren't you curious enough to think that maybe the Earth COULD BE less than 10,000 years old?

  • Huh
I think this only applies to U.S. government schools. Public schools in other countries, especially in Europe and Asia, churn out extremely intelligent and well-educates students at a regular rate. (They seem especially intelligent when compared to U.S. students...)
  • Hugo's Ghost
I can feel your drool on the back of my neck Hugo, that's for sure. I bet you still live at home with your mother at age 40.
  • AWK's blindness
Goodness AWK...I was educated in Texas and not once did I hear in a classroom that the earth was less than 10,000 years old. I seem to recall a lot of emphasis on evolution. Texas, being an oil state also had a lot of information about geology...which was my first job out of college doing gravity and magnetic surveys looking at subsurface strata for places where petroleum might be lurking. You seem to be an idiot. Might just be an impression gathered from your posts. But it is obvious you are out of your league when commenting on Texas.

I do recall when education dumbed down in my hometown in Texas but they didn't start teaching religion...they started teaching liberalism..which was this notion that self esteem could be bestowed and wasn't a by-product of acheivement and knowledge. The problem with schools in Texas isn't religion at all...it is the political notions of fairness and anti-competition. You say you are a math major...you should remember that intelligence is as much about the conclusion reached as about the mechanism used to reach it. So if you look at the world I see and conclude that the solution is more government and higher taxes then math major or not...you're the moron.
  • Roberta @ 03/25/09 11:01:58 AM
Was that supposed to make any sense?
  • Math Teachers
I suppose a Jr. High math teacher with knowledege beyond basic calculus is not needed if they were an excellent teacher, but our mediocre teachers barely have a grasp on how to teach geometry and fractions. The more you know about your subject, the easier it is to explain in terms the kids can understand.

Can't put all the blame on the schools. There are plenty of parents who absolutely don't care what their kids do in school. The common threads seem to be long work hours that prevent any adults from being home very much, impovershed people just trying to survive, or bad marriages where the kids suffer. My kids tell me horror stories of kids who never hand in homework, never study, and compete with each other to disrupt the class. There seem to be two main groups: parents who think the only thing that matters is sports, and parents who in their cultural roots believe school ends when junior is old enough to find work as a laborer.
  • AWK
It seems that you have a huge chip on your shoulder...
What is it about Democrats that you love so much? What is it bout Republicans that you hate so much? Why do you need to be sooooo extreme either way?

I'm so impressed with your display of knowledge. You're a math major! I guess that means you make lots of money. Since you/re so highly educated and obviously good at math. It seems to me that if someone majors in math and they don't make TONS of money, they must not be all that good in math! As a "flaming" DEMOCRAT - following your leader President B.O. - your success in earning the BIG bucks that you should rightly be earning (cause you're so smart) will be punished! How does that work for your evolution theory? Since you're so against religion???

B.O.'s plan is for all of us in the U.S. to evolve into a society of underachievers.

Is that survival of the fittest? No! Of course not! Your "Democratic" "Evolutionist" "Higher (EGO) Thinking Attitude" - all of this - really doesn't mesh with what the goal of PrezBO and his groupies are all about.

Maybe you were impressed by the word "Change"? How are you liking this change? Maybe since your so highly educated and smart - and must consequently earn the BIG bucks... you won't mind being taxed a lot more than the Dumb Masses who didn't bother to work hard or get an education. Maybe you won't mind subsidizing the local crack ho's with all of your extra money??? You will have no choice!

Incidentally, I do not subscribe to ANY political party... I do enjoy pointing out the hipocrisy of both EXTREMES. You really rank right up there... congratulations!

wouldn't is be much better if there were NO political parties? Then people would be more inclined to listen to the candidate and make educated decisions.

Anyone who claims to be so educated but is still so extreme (in either direction) creates doubt about his boastful comments about himself.
  • H.L. Mencken quote
It is unfortunate Mr. Mencken didn't hold more sway when he was alive. When I was a grad student (mathematics), we took some pleasure in baiting an EdD on the faculty who offered the proposition that anything students absorbed could be evaluated with a multiple-guess test. There are other who are enamored of the phrase "drill and kill".

Public education is designed to create a society of compliant sheep, willing to work at menial to semi-skilled jobs, unlikely to make waves or question established authority. The mental model fits right in with the decor found in old East German or Soviet-era mass housing.
  • Is public education achieving its goals?

  • Captain Jack's kid's math teacher
So long as silly teacher's unions insist on the same pay for crew cut brutes (who are about 95% republicans) teaching phy ed, or dime-a-dozen English majors, as for math and science teachers, no young person with talent in math and science will be attracted to teaching.

But, why does it matter if a junior high school teacher has no math education beyond calculus? I am a math major and remember advanced (post-calculus) math concepts like the Heine-Borel Theorem, Cauchy Schwarz inequalities, and Toral Lie algebras. Are these concepts now being taught to 7th graders?

If the teacher is running an AP high school calculus class, then, yes, I would probably want some advanced mathematics knowledge from the teacher . . . but at the junior high level, it's probably not necessary and frankly not possible unless salaries for math & science teachers are raised significantly.
  • Quote from H.L. Mencken
Good reason to keep homeschooling legal! It is a wonderful alternative and it needs to be kept as an option for parents!
  • Dumb Teachers

  • H.L. Mencken quote
I guess I'm not really surprised that Americans in general don't see what government education is doing to our country. Anyone who would look to John Stewart or ET for news is obviously to lazy to care about their kids and the future of our country. I am old enough to remember my parents actually checking my school work and believe it or not making redo it if it was sub-par. They actually had the temerity to hurt my feelings and make me work harder to be better instead of telling me that whatever I did was OK. The election results last year tell you all you need to know about where we are heading, most people believe we have a 'right' to cradle to grave care and nurturing - how sad. I believe the best days of our country have gone by, I will miss them.

Ah yes, "government" schools-where Neal got his primary education and where he sent his child to be educated. Can't you just feel the hypocrisy?
  • Public education is far from perfect, but . . .
Look, there are a lot of stupid things that go on in "government schools": there is a bloated educational bureaucracy, and it is just plain nuts that teachers, who always whine about "wanting to be treated as professionals" are operating in a union culture that shuns accountablity.

But at least government schools (at least those outside of Kansas and Texas)won't teach your kids that the Earth is less than 10,000 years old, that humans and dinosaurs co-existed, and that the bible is the absolute source of literal infallible truth about everything. Yes, that kind of education for all Americans will position ourselves very well in the international competition in engineering, science, and technology.
