With no audio track, it is difficult to understand. It appears that the girl performed a typical teenage beligerence. The policeman didn't strike her; anyone who really watches this can see that. Both blows were checked to the point that they were not blows at all, but thrusts. Maybe it was pepper spray, but the officer's fists could not have struck the girl's face, and at any rate, the "evidence" collected afterwards was minimal, and it would have taken total idiots to "beat up" a girl under these circumstances. It appears that she smarted off to them, as a typical teen would, and was given a rough but harmless counter response by trained correctional officials in an attempt to control her and gain cooperation. It looks much more violent than it is, and for a reason: Striking fear into young hearts early often pays great dividends. Watching the video closely, the first officer who "attacked" ensured that his hand was between the girl's head and the wall. She was "tackled" and brought down. Teenagers, no matter how innocent they can act, can be quite malevolent, and laws prevent thorough searches of them. Once they are arrested, it becomes the duty of the responsible authority to ensure that they do not endanger others and themselves-with emphasis given to others, as common logic would suggest.
I have viewed this video, and in my opinion as a layman, had I been asked to discharge my duties as a law man, I would have little more to say to those cops than "Ease up just a bit."

Eh, at first I thought it was them mainly throwing her into a cell after she mouthed off to them. But actually watching it? Way, WAY too far. It's sad that this occasionally happens, as it gives ALL police a black eye (not literally).

All kinds of tragedies will occur now -- policemen will get fired. Maybe even do jail time. Parents of the girl will sue, and it will all be to the taxpayers' expense. Girl will likely continue on thinking she's a bada$$. And isolated incidents like this will cause many in certain communities to distrust the police and not turn in or give vital information on where the murderers, rapists, general thugs are.

If I was her parent and I saw what those two cops did to her I would have been so mad and so out to get them fired. But after seeing this film on her and her actions towards them I would have congradulated them,patted them on the back and say "Thank You." If everyone reads the full article you would see things differently. Before this thing happened, the cop was involved in TWO fatal shootings within the last 3 years and a DUI. In his DUI case he was drunk and on prescription drugs.....what did he get, he got admin leave and a deffered sentence with probation. I know there are good cops, but why didn't his "good" cop co-workers say or do anything? Cops don't get fired or jail time until they finally kill someone. this video is an example of many things just gone wrongly out of control.Yes cops should be held to a higher standard because of the power they are intrusted with ,but how many of you know that the starting pay for them is about $20 to $25k a year. You can't buy much expertise and professionalism for that and you sure as hell couldn't get most of you "lets-get-the-mean-ol'cop" commentors to risk a bullet everyday for that money. Waiters,bussboys and valet parking attendants make more. My understanding is she was in arrested for taking her parents car without permision. Although this seems to be a simple family problem to get the police involved a stolen auto report would have to be filed which bumps it up to felony status. It looks like "overreacting" and "excessive force" was used, but anything hitting an officer from a prisoner is condsidered "assualting an officer" and must be reacted with rapid force. Fear is a useful tool in handling criminals and it is the only thing preventing a riot in a jail. This incident is a simple loss of control issue by the cops and they should be investigated and disiplined if found wrong.

Most folks know that there are two types of cops. The vast majority of them are solid people who are there to earn a living and do some good. There is a minority, however, that are there to bully, boss, and otherwise get off on the power that goes with the badge. They tend to get weeded out fairly quickly. It's wrong to think that all cops are the bad type.

As to the readers who have had bad experiences with the police, my guess is that at least 90% of the ass-whippings received at the hands of cops were caused by your own bad attitude or smart mouth. I'd also bet that the majority of readers who have had run-ins with the cops have also had run-ins with coworkers, spouses, and neighbors. Being a jerk tends to cause conflict with others, whether they wear a badge or not.

I blame the girl more for creating the situation, and her total lack of respect for authorities that put her in the situation that she found herself. Was it excessive yes, but the cop had no idea how far she would take it after assaulting him by kicking her shoe at him. We still don’t know what she did to find herself there or, the other actions that lead up to the moments we see on the video. I have had family members that have been in law enforcement and there is always more to the story than what you see in those clips, that kind of force is not doled out like some in this thread would have you believe. Maybe if you drop the attitude and give respect for these people putting their lives on the line to serve the public everyday, you might have better experiences with law enforcement because it is a thankless job. You know you really would be surprised; how far apologizing, admitting guilt, and being polite will get you. It has gotten me out of 2 very bad speeding tickets, and I am a guy. That being said, I think the cop should be suspended without pay for a period of time to contemplate whether that much force was necessary.

SHE may be a woman, but that doesn't change the fact that she kicked her shoe at the officer. While I don't advocate hitting women, I don't advocate hitting men either. You can't discount someone based on their gender; women nowadays have the ability to be just as dangerous as men. As others have pointed out, we don't know what goes on behind the scene. She very well may have verbally or physically threatened the officer previously. Maybe it's just because I'm law-abiding and have never been to jail, but something tells me you don't kick at an officer. I can guarantee she won't do it again.

Folks, she kicked toward her jailors. This is an assault. They have no duty to respond with proportional force. They do have a duty to ensure that they maintain control of that facility for their own safety as well as the safety of the prisoners. If they don't rigorously put down the small assaults, the prisoners will quickly escalate and people will REALLY be harmed. The public doesn't really know what a radial nerve strike is, but I'm pretty sure this little snit was resisting bringing her hands together so she could be cuffed. Bringing some pain and paralysis to that arm will make it easier for the officer to force her to comply. I definitely saw a girl who wanted to act tough and then got the tough treatment. Also, we don't know what she was mouthing to the officer. It could have been a legitimate threat from her gang to his person or family.

Looking at the video, and not hearing audio, you cannot easily judge what is going on. More information is needed to make a more solid determination. Yes, it *appears* the police may have acted with too much force. However, anybody viewing the video does not have audio, and does not know what happened before. Seems that many are reacting simply to what they have heard on the radio in conjunction with this video.

If the girl was being a b-t-h, then she needed some attitude readjustment. Some have said the police should have turned her around and cuffed her -- if she's being a b-t-h, then she's not going to do anything willingly. I did hear on the air that she took her parents car without permission, and in some cases, she could be interpreted as a car thief. That's a pretty major felony right there. As a parent, if I reacted like that and had video showing my teenager disrespecting me, I don't think the COPS would buy that excuse and let me go. I think I would be behind bars for a while.
