OF COURSE THEY DON'T WANT TO ENCOURAGE PRIVATE EDUCATION

There's a little brouhaha happening in Charleston, South Carolina over private education and school choice. A proposed bill would offer tuition tax credits to people who choose to send their children to private schools. The bill would let the state to use tax dollars to allow students to transfer from failing government schools to private schools or better government schools. This infuriates a lot of lawmakers ..... they can't get a hold of your children quite as easily if they don't submit to their government education! Besides .. these political hacks have teacher's unions to please.

But unfortunately it has become a racial issue. Black leaders are denouncing the bill. What a surprise. As an alternative they are supporting legislation that would increase choices within the government school system. A former Teacher of the Year from South Carolina says, "As an African-American and an educator, I'm shocked and appalled that this is the position that someone who is supportive of our community would propose ... It's bad legislation." And that's about as specific as the opposition gets, folks.

So many of the problems we're facing today in this country can be traced back to our government education system. You want change? When the majority of American parents understand that our government school system was designed to do little more than produce good workers and government subjects, then we'll get change.

What others are saying

  • 70 yr old neighboors
are probably exempt from their property tax burden. If you're over 60 in my county you pay 0 property tax. (Psst - For copyleft, property tax is what funds the school system)
  • RE: ‘Neal keeps ducking this point...’ by Copyleft
    KEY: Copyleft =~ Roberta =*
~First with the auto makers, and now with private schools. PUBLIC MONEY is involved; that really does make a difference!
*Why would you want to prevent ANY children from having the best educational opportunities available? Why is having school vouchers and/or tax incentives available to anyone who pays income tax is a bad idea? How would this be racist or unfair in any way? Do only white people pay income taxes? Would only white people want to give their children a superior education?

~Want to send your kid to a private school? Fine; YOU pay for it, 100%. You get ZERO tax dollars to fund your personal choice. No special vouchers, no credits, no supplements. ZERO public money.
*When I pay my property taxes on my house, a large portion of it goes to public education. If my child were still in school, our family would taken advantage of this provision – that we have been paying into via my property taxes. Why is this a bad idea? Why do you want to deprive ANY children of choices of superior education? Are you still just Copying from leftist crap with no actual reasoning or genuine thought behind your rants? This is why I doubt that you are even a real person… No one could actually be this ignorant.
    ig•no•rant (ĭg'nər-ənt)
    adj.
    1. Lacking education or knowledge.
    2. Showing or arising from a lack of education or knowledge: an ignorant mistake.
    3. Unaware or uninformed.
  • Wrong again, Copy
No, that's not the "government's" money as you suggest; that's the TAXPAYER'S money. And WE, AS TAXPAYERS, HAVE THE RIGHT TO DECIDE HOW THAT MONEY IS SPENT on our children's education. As you obviously rent and don't pay property taxes, it's something you wouldn't understand.

Oh and BTW, those black politicians are hacks--paid by the teachers' union.
  • Everyone against vouchers seem to miss the point.
I have never spoken with a person who says they are against vouchers or tax credits for private schools who can answer the following questions.

First, if the intent of schools is to educate children, why is it a bad thing to have the money follow students to the best place to be educated?

Second, since you think it is bad for public schools if vouchers or tax credits are used to pay for student education [whether private or public in a non-failing school] please explain why it should be a priority to save "FAILING" public schools rather than to educate those students who are subjected to them?

If education of students was truly the primary goal, there would be no objection to having the funding for education follow the student wherever s/he goes.
  • government union = double damage
Any move towards ending government involvement in education is a good move, especially considering I don't have any children and have no desire to pay for your stupid brats' education.
  • To Copyleft
Why don't you feel the same way about healthcare?
  • To: Mark & Tom
Ahhh, but with that argument, you relieve all NONparents of school-age children from any obligation to pay for public schools too.

For example, my neighbors are in their seventies; why should any of their taxes pay for public schools? Or libraries that they don't visit? Or roads they don't drive on? In fact, I don't plan to pay any taxes to support the fire department unless I have a fire!

See where this "pay for me only" approach gets you?
  • Copyleft: Imbecile
Private money is involved--the money confiscated to pay for government schools. You see, the "public" money used to fund government schools was taken from private citizens who could have used that money to send their children to quality private schools. No coerced payment for inferior government "education" you're smart enough to spare your children from.
  • CopyLeft - you're ducking the point too...
    Hmmm.

So, if you make a personal choice - you don't get public funding for it? So, there shouldn't be any public funding for abortions - sex (and the resulting pregnancy) is a personal choice. Or how about where you choose to live? There are still people in NOLA that are living in hotel rooms, paid for by tax dollars. Katrina was 3 years ago - they have made a personal choice to not go out and get a job. What about people who don't have kids that have to fund schools with their tax dollars? Hey Copy, how about all of the "poor" people that took a subprime mortgage? They made a "personal choice" to buy a house that they couldn't afford to pay for - do we have to bail them out with public funds now? According to you - the answer is HELL NO!!!
I am sick and tired of libs talking about "public funds" - the money belongs to the taxpayers who is was taken from - not the government and the messiah - its ours!
  • Private education
This is in response to "copyleft's" point...If you want people who choose to send their children to private schools to pay for it 100% on their own then they should receive some sort of property tax break because they are paying for the government schools even though they are not using them! The same goes for homeschoolers, they should get a tax break too because they are not using the system. I feel ONLY those using the government schools should pay for them!!
  • Education over Indoctrination
I made the choice to send my daughter to private school from the time she was three. She has never set foot in a Government school. Really, the school cost more than I can comfortably afford, more than most people can comfortably afford but putting her in a Government run school would cost even more than could be measured in dollars and cents. If education is the true goal (as opposed to indoctrination), money follows the child to public, private, parachial school. This will make schools compete, put parents in the driver's seat (where they belong), and further the cause of liberty.
  • Ford's Plan
I agree with "Copyleft". Nothing, zippo, nada, if you send your kid to private school. But with that, you don't have to pay a cent, zippo, nada, in school taxes. Since that won't happen, Ford needs to be supported. Maybe if we have competition the government schools will have to get better. Neva happin' G.I.
  • I already pay for public school
Copyleft, I see your point, but you're missing one major element. The government doesn't pay for public school; taxpayers do. Therefore, these types of bills, which have been very successful in other states (including Georgia), give parents WHO ALREADY PAY FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION the opportunity to shift funds from the failing public school system to a private school of their choice.
  • CopyLeft
Copy,I read your comments on a daily basis and amazed by the scope of your idiocy. I guess I could try to respond to all of your comments as others try to do, but the best way to marginalize stupid people such as you is to ignore them. I hope others who post to these boards will do the same as I do and just ignore the STUPID CRAP that you spew on a daily basis.
Oh, and by the way it is not public money. It is money taken from the people who earn it.
Bye Copy, you do not deserve to exist in my world.
  • Gone too far, ya think?
I think it has gone WAAAAAY to far and both parties are to blame. I'm sure if Barney and Dodd wouldn't have gotten their way with Freddie and Fannie this housing crisis wouldn't have been as bad. But Bush is to blame as well. Remember the Enron and WorldCom accounting scandals in 2001/2002? Bush created a task force to go after some of these thugs. And as a result of increased inforcement some of these rascals went to prison for a long time. But prosecutions decreased over the years after Enron. Could some of this mess be attributed to this? Could be? A business transaction has to be based on trust and integrity! Without both, markets will fail and government will fill the vacuum left behind! We have to realize that Wall Street and the business sector is not free of thugs!
  • Taking a closer look
The main objection isn't that it would be detrimental to black students, but that White students might somehow get ahead.

Their motives are all too clear and its the same stuff we've been hearing for years. Keep everyone the same so everyone is equal. They don't care if the black youngsters fail - they simply don't want the white students to succeed.
  • Sen. Ford's Plan
Sen. Ford has come a long way. He has tried time and again to do "the right thing". As you can see, the NEA stooges are all over this. "Black Leaders" condemm this because they want Black children to fail. They get to keep their jobs and continue to race bait. Sen. Ford is to be applauded for this but instead, watch the idiots with their pitch forks go after him and anyone who wants to see more Black families, and white families, get their kids out of these government facilities and into a school where they might learn something. Way to go Sen. Ford! Shame on the rest of you "leaders".
