NEW ZEALAND: AN ESCAPE PLAN DESTINATION???

You know that is really sad? That you have to go all the way around the world in order to find a government that is willing to allow the private sector to bring itself out of economic crisis. This should be the United States. Should be, but won't be with anti-capitalist Democrats running the show. Thanks to our belief that America's greatness stems from government and that government exists to solve our problems .. all we are going to get is more government, more government, and more government. Any way you cut it, more government equals less freedom.

Things are different in New Zealand. The Prime Minister of New Zealand has decided to take the exact opposite approach. I've been saying for a while now. If you are making an escape plan. A good destination may well be New Zealand.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has decided that the first thing his country is going to do is cut personal income taxes. Now a "cut" for New Zealand means lowering its top rate to 38% .. but hey, it's the concept that counts. If Barack Obama gets his way, that 38% rate will be lower than the top tax bracket in the United States at 39.5%. Add PresBOs other tax increases and the marginal rate on the job-producers in this country will reach 42% and above.

Key's next move will be to cut corporate tax rates. What?? Are we reading this correctly? Do we really have a leader of a country that actually wants to help the evil, filthy, criminal corporations? Imagine that. Another focus will be to chip away at government regulation of industries that drive away foreign capital. So while the United States is on the verge of nationalizing some industries, New Zealand is working on ways to deregulate in order to attract investment. There will also be a "line-by-line review" of every single government department (something that Barack Obama promised) and a cap on new spending. Over here across the pond the United States is increasing the size of its next budget by 8% and creating more government programs - the largest being a government healthcare system.

Watch New Zealand. They're going to show us how its done. They may have an advantage though. The majority of people in New Zealand may actually have a sense of self-worth and independence. That's helps.

The above link is a great discussion on what New Zealand has done to scale down government and the immense benefit the people there have reaped because of it.

Wow, you must have been smoking a lot before you made this little post. "Unfortunately, Obama appears too interested in being "bipartisan" and trying to appease the far right than to do what's necessary." In what universe has Barack Obama ever made any effort whatsoever to reach out to the Republican party? Did you completely miss the fact that his Porkulus Package (You might refer to this as the failed stimulus package that cost us more than $1,000,000,000,000) received virtually ZERO Republican support? Why do you suppose that might be? He must have been reaching out too far to the right. You're a genius.

It just occurred to me that you must be a comedian. That's the only way someone could make such an asinine statment with a straight face. Bravo, my good man! Best laugh I've had all day! I especially liked the part where you went on about spending more on government services as the way to solve the problems we currently face with dollars forcefully stolen from the paychecks of WORKING Americans. You're really cracking me up here!
  • New Zealand
re: your article. last time I checked you can not just go to that country to ive. They have very restrictive emigration laws.
  • @Robin, you are joking right?
    "Their college educated"
Lol. Wrong form of their/they're in a funny sentence.

PS why is everyone looking for a conservative government? NZ (me)'s got JK and he's a pretty successful businessman. We may have nationalised healthcare, but what's wrong with that?
  • good idea
No, I wasn't joking. I agree that the rudeness is shared. However, I can see that liberals are not welcome here because we ruin the 'fun' of ranting. Pity. I'll take your advice and leave. As Mom always said, 'Why go where you are not welcome?' Hey, I tried.
  • NZ health care
I am from the US and living in NZ for a year. Been here for about 3 months. My wife is a doctor working over here for 1/2 of the pay she would earn in the US. She likes not basing her medical decisions on the possibility of getting sued. The town we are in is small but, it is 8 doctors short. If you want to see a Doctor and are not a patient, you pay out of pocket. Many drive to the larger cities to see a doctor. The big brother in NZ is known to be the least corrupt in the world and public servants tend to take a pay cut to serve. There are no illegals to sponge off the "System" and yet it fails. Do you really think the US with all it's illegals can do a better job at universal health care? If you were wealthy and wanted to retire to NZ, you couldn't because they fear you would eat up too much of their medical resources. Housing is not cheap here. Don't ask me why, no one is making enough money to buy one. The minimum wage is about $6.50 USd. The US already has socialized medicine, the VA!! Ask a soldier haw that is going. While you're at it ask a Canadian Doctor what's going on with their health care. You won't need to go far to ask one if you live in the US. That's where most of them are. Just thought I would share.
  • Lets copy New Zealand
New Zealand has much more comprehensive social programs than the US, including universal healthcare. So let's do that.

The fact is we have to have much higher taxes than New Zealand. We spend vastly more than they do proportionally on the military, so where are we going to get the money for the rest of the necessary government programs. Out of thin air? It doesn't add up, unless you consider that we don't need to spend as much proportionally on government services, which seems baseless. It seems far more likely we need to spend more.

Of course, New Zealand's size and situation means it has only minimal relevance to our situation.

We already know how to get out of this financial crisis, because we did it about 70 years ago. Unfortunately, Obama appears too interested in being "bipartisan" and trying to appease the far right than to do what's necessary.
  • Robin, you are joking right?
You think we are rough on libs here, I'm sure this is not the only board you visit (shouldn't be). I have found much rougher language bashing conservatives. It's on both sides.

As far as NZ goes, I would not consider them a conservative government just yet. There are many socialist leanings and they still support the monarchy which to me is asinine. Their college educated (everyone gets college by the way) all go elsewhere to work and send their money back home. That is probably one huge injection into their system.
  • as the saying goes...
Don't the the door hit ya where the good lord split ya!
  • New Zealand
Hey Robin, cool your jets! If Boortz rubs you the wrong way, turn the cat around! It's obvious that the 'talk meister' is credible to the extent that there's no lack of sponsorship. So Boortz is dogmatic? Go somewhere else. Jeesh! Give us a break.
  • Problem with NZ
It is nearly impossible to move there if you have to work for a living, unless you are in the health care field. The government posts which jobs can be filled by foreigners, and unless the position you find is authorized by the government no job for you.

It would be great if you could do your work over the internet.
  • Thanks Neal
Thanks Neal, I've been debating on doing a job search in Australia, New Zealand or Ireland. I think this helps my decision making process. I just wish I could find a country with a real conservative government.
  • universal healthcare
When comparing other countries to the US, the population of that country should be kept in mind. Universal healthcare might be feasible for a country of a few million which is the population of some of the US's larger cities. But gov't programs such as healthcare are not practical or sustainable for a country as populated at the US. Anyway, our gov't has already proven to be a failure on any federal program that serves the general public.
  • Middle Earth
    er...I mean new Zealand.
Always wanted to visit there. Note I said VISIT.
  • New Zealand did this before and it worked
Search on the Imprimis website, publication of Hillsdale College, and you'll find that they did this before with fantastic results and retrained people to think, as a fundamental premise, that government isn't your momma!
    http://www.hillsdale.edu/news/imprimis/archive/issue.asp?year=2004&month=04
  • Prime Minister
I thought the Prime Minister's name was Brian (flight of the conchords)
  • Economics
"That you have to go all the way around the world in order to find a government that is willing to allow the private sector to bring itself out of economic crisis. This should be the United States. Should be, but won't be with anti-capitalist Democrats running the show. "

As opposed to the way President Bush let the banks and care companies fail. Or the way he and the Republicans refrained from cutting taxes for people who don't pay them.
  • I love Boortz's inconsistencies
New Zealand is a nuclear free zone and also has a large socialized health care system. The Green Party has a huge influence on New Zealand and a positive one at that. Hell, the French blew up the Greenpeace boat Rainbow in no other than a New Zealand harbor. New Zealand also has several geothermal energy power plants. Imagine that. Using the hot earth magma for cheap energy instead of blowing up West Virginia mountains for coal to burn in dirty coal plants.

Yes Neal, we do have a lot to learn from NZ and I find it very funny you are finally getting on board!

  • New Zealand move
Another little twist to emigrating to NZ, they have a limit to how many folks they'll let in, and you have to have a marketable skill complete with training and education. If the US implemented such a limit, and could enforce it at the border, we probably wouldn't be in the mess we're in anyhow...
  • Let's be like NZ
A universal, national health care system would be the obvious first place to start...
  • just depends on who one aks...

    Libertarian Experiment in Iceland Fails

I just read the above referenced article this morning before coming to this site. I read articles from every point of view. I am more inclined to believe a perspective from someone from Iceland than Neal. Neal is more interested in reinforcing his own view than considering if there are other workable ideas. I hope the backlash against rudeness and 'painful truth' will soon spread in the conservative and republican groups. If you want liberals to listen to you and consider your ideas, you might consider not addressing them as stupid and government educated. If 'we' are the enemy, your fellow Americans, why do the 'achievers' stay here? Why not move to Iceland where you can be as free as you please. As long as you consider the rest of us leeches, we won't miss your judgemental and dismissive attitudes, your all or nothing thinking. It is increasingly easy to turn the channel for me. It seems stupid to show up for regular insults just to learn what nonliberals think. I'm sure there are some great thinkers that are conservative but they sure don't get air time..just the 'puddin' stirrers'.
  • Very little professional opportunity in NZ
I've met more than a few expats from New Zealand. They joke that the population of New Zealand may be about 5 million, but at any given time, 1 million of them are living and working out of the cuntry. With its agriculture- and tourist- based economy, there are scarce opportunities for professional employment, so many college-educated New Zealanders leave their lush paradise for career opportunities in Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, and other such centers of business and commerce.
  • I'm from NZ
This is the first time in over 10 years that they have elected a non-Democrat equivalent government. Health care is a mess. Income tax is only part of the taxation, they also have a Goods and Services Tax. I love the country but it is very small population wise and employment is an issue.
  • NZ
Sure, go ahead. They have a weak bill of rights that can be overridden by a simple majority of Parliament and a national health care system. Sounds like you'd love it.
  • And when will you be leaving, Neal?
    Yeah... I thought so.
