IS THERE STILL HOPE?

I doubt it. What I'm talking about is the omnibus bill laden with 9,000 pork projects and government handouts. But there is buzz around Washington that the bill may not be as secure as some Democrats may have hoped.

Florida Republican Senator Mel Martinez says that Republicans are within "striking distance" of bringing down the omnibus bill. Remember that the Democrats in the Senate need every vote, but Evan Bayh and Russ Feingold (both Democrats) have now said that they are going to vote against it. Hmm I wonder if they are up for re-election soon? But Democrats Ben Nelson and Bill Nelson are undecided at this point.

In other words .. support is slipping. Wouldn't a filibuster be a wonderful thing to watch?

You and I agree. The pork is bad no matter what side it comes from. My point is that Neal and many others present this bill as wholly owned and pushed by the Democrats. The Republicans are guilty of hypocrisy because they know the bill will most likely pass, so they stick their pork in it and then stand up and wag their fingers at the Democrats for being so profligate with tax money.

  • Bill Nelson - FL
Bill Nelson is ALWAYS undecided. This is an old trick Bob Graham used to do. Then at the last moment they side with the majority. Keeps the heat off and probably gets them bigger committee assignments and extra perks.

It's about time we repeal the 17th amendment!
  • Re-election won't matter
Bayh and Fiengold will express "concern" and they will get face time on TV and in print, OBAMA/PELOSI/REID will come asking for what they can do to change thier mind, BAYH and FIENGOLD will name their price, and their votes will be changed...
    Any ???'s
  • I didn't
write this but found it scary enough to share.....

    A Page From History
Norman Mattoon Thomas (November 20, 1884 to December 19, 1968) was a leading American socialist, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America.

The Socialist Party candidate for President of the U.S., Norman Thomas, said this in a 1944 speech:

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of "liberalism," they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.! "

He went on to say: "I no longer need to run as a Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democrat Party has adopted our platform."

    It's happening, folks.
  • Alabamastan
We don't care who is responsible to the pork in any spending bill. Republicans have been as bad as Democrats (worse because they should be fiscally responsible). We want NO MORE PORK!!!!
  • Bayh
I asked two weeks ago when Bayh would turn back into the Indiana moderate he campaigns as, instead of the Nancy Pelosi-Potomac-Kool-Aid-drinker he has become. Sure enough, this last "act" was his first volley in trying to convince the folks back home that he hasn't forgotten where he's from. Whatever.
  • omnibus budget
Unfortunately, the budget rules prohibit a filibuster.
  • In addition
NTU.org also shows Obamas grade.....'F' This of course is from the 110th Congress.
  • FYI
According to NTU.org Bill Nelson gets a grade of 'F' for taxpayer friendly representation while Mel Martinez gets a 'B+'. We in Florida will miss Mel as he will not run for re-election.
  • Evan Bayh and Russ Feingold
    > ... but Evan Bayh and Russ Feingold (both Democrats) have now said that they are going to vote against it. Hmm I wonder if they are up for re-election soon?

According to Wikipedia, both are up for re-election in 2010.
  • Feingold
As much as I disagree with Russ Feingold on most issues, I have to say that he has integrity. He has often been the lone democrat to vote against his own party. But I could never support him, based on the disastrous Campaign Finance "Reform" law that he and that RINO McCain co-wrote.

But regardless of my views, Feingold is an institution in Wisconsin. He will still be in office 20 years after hell freezes over. Which is about how far behind Wisconsin is in most matters. (Speaking from first hand experience.)
  • filibuster material
Wouldn't it be outstanding if they performed a filibuster by reading out, one at a time, the actual opinions of the best economists in the country and what they think of these spending bills. I'd love it.
  • RINO's voting for the pork
Neal I love the picture of those pigs on the story. However, even if those two "moderate" democrats vote against it, their votes will be washed out by the three RINO's, Collins, Snowe, and Specter.
  • Earmarks
Some facts for you: the top two earmarks sponsors (by cost) are Republican. Three of the top five - Republican. Six of the top ten - that's right, Republican.
