INTERVENING IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR

Yesterday we got Obama's official plan for the auto industry. Step #1: Fire the CEO of General Motors. Step #2: Push Chrysler toward a merger with an Italian car company. Step #3: Threaten bankruptcy for both companies.

Wall Street didn't seem to like the administration's response. The Dow responded remarkably ... sinking nearly 4%. I guess I would have lost confidence too, if I realized that the government could oust any CEO at will if the president thinks it is the right thing to do. In fact, some experts are saying that this is the most significant presidential intervention in the private sector since 1952 and Harry Truman with the steel industry.

So it is clearly Obama's goal to re-make the auto industry the way he wants it to be, not based on profitability or the demand of the market place. He says, "I am absolutely committed to working with Congress and the auto companies to meet one goal: The United States of America will lead the world in building the next generation of clean cars ... our auto industry is not moving in the right direction fast enough to succeed." In other words .. Obama gets to decide the right direction. Instead of making cars that the consumers want, Obama will decree that the automakers will make cars that HE wants. If they don't move in that direction fast enough he'll just fire one team and hire another.

Well it turns out that this is a direction that Barack Obama has envisioned for a while .. and like his chief of staff says, "never let a good crisis go to waste." In Obama's 2006 autobiography, The Audacity Of Hope, here's what he had to say about his vision for the auto industry:

The bottom line is that fuel-efficient cars and alternative fuels like E85, a fuel formulated with 85 percent ethanol, represent the future of the auto industry. It is a future American car companies can attain if we start making some tough choices now. For years U.S. automakers and the UAW have resisted higher fuel-efficiency standards because retooling costs money, and Detroit is already struggling under huge retiree health-care costs and stiff competition. So during my first year in the Senate I proposed legislation I called "Health Care for Hybrids." The bill makes a deal with U.S. automakers: In exchange for federal financial assistance in meeting the health-care costs of retired autoworkers, the Big Three would reinvest these savings into developing more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Aggressively investing in alternative fuel sources can also lead to the creation of thousands of new jobs. Ten or twenty years down the road, that old Maytag plant in Galesburg could reopen its doors as a cellulosic ethanol refinery. Down the street, scientists might be busy in a research lab working on a new hydrogen cell. And across the way, a new auto company could be busy churning out hybrid cars. The new jobs created could be filled by American workers trained with new skills and a world-class education, from elementary school to college.

It seems as though Obama is doing a real good job of selling a crisis as a means to institute his vision of the automotive industry. Are you comfortable with this? In fact .. are you comfortable with this level of government enterprise in the marketplace?

I'm think that there's a nagging thought with many of you that this has gone entirely too far .. and that our markets might have self-corrected if the government had let this crisis run its course. And .. if you've been paying attention you should know that this crisis wouldn't have happened .. and it certainly would have been less severe if Barney Frank hadn't stood in the way of efforts of people like George Bush and John McCain to intervene in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac years ago.

This is something, isn't it? Obama replaces the GM boss, but Barney Frank - the one individual who carries more of the responsibility for this mess than any other single living human being -- seems to be untouchable.

What others are saying

  • Wow....
Copyleft, do you actually believe the stuff you write?

Government interaction has lead to the problems we are now facing. Mortgage bubble? Sure thing low income, no skilled workers, we will let you get home loans you can't afford... otherwise it would be UNFAIR.

Ridiculous executive compensation? Lets pass laws limiting their compensation which lead to creative ways around the legislation and increased their pay with things like deferred compensation.

Recession? Lets artifically increase the worth of a non skilled laborer by increasing minimum wage! Who cares if the guy cleaning my parking lot isn't actually worth 7.50 an hour. That is what he is getting paid. Oh, and since most union contracts are based off of minimum wage, congrats, you just gave a hefty raise to employees who did nothing to deserve it other than vote for a Democrat.
  • What can WE do?
    Here is my idea.
We must develop a montra (meaning "spoken" or "the spoken words"), a shtick much like the left has. The statement about telling a lie enough times people will believe it. Well the same holds true about telling the truth. We can reach out to our neighbors, friends, coworker, relatives, and strangers using these as a guideline.
Start with developing five to 10 talking points. I myself have not come up with any other ideas except to post this message. In marketing, we know that word of mouth is the best form of advertisement. Well, the members can reach at least one other person thus doubling the believers. These will go on to reach more people. We spread the truth and motivate others to join our cause.
The time to vent has done its purpose, which is to bring a large number of like-minded people together. Now is the time to act, non-violently. Our strongest weapon is our voice, our honest voice. We do research and redirect the information into a usable form of communication.
Once the talking points are established, we need to memorize them and spread the word.
Our talking points need to be strong and truthful. The talking points must be rooted in facts.
We CAN find our voice and spread it to a multitude of people. Let us take our stand now!
  • Regarding Ethanol
Ethanol is not as good as it sounds and here is why.
    Ethanol does:
    make mileage worse
    cost more
    reduce power
and now we are seeing that it:
    increases pollution
    increases food costs
    increases deforestation (converted to farmland)

  • Response to PK
In 2003, the Bush Administration did try to do something regarding Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, but the Democrats stopped it. Even thought the GOP had a majority, they did not have enough votes to pass the bill.
Waters made that clueless comment during a hearing in 2004. Frank Raines cooked the books so that he could receive huge bonuses and who is an advisor to the Obama campaign. There is a video of the Democrats praising Freddie and Fannie and claiming there is nothing wrong and the Republicans calling for more regulations:

I (John McCain) join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.

  • Differant Rules Apply Copy?
I am calling BS on you and AWK. Its sad when you can't even admit what is going on in plain sight. I'm not sure that AWK is even paying attention, but you could take the little speech he made change it to LEFT WING PARANOIA and used it for the last 8 years. He not talking about the country, you two just hate the fact that OBAMA is now wearing the shirt with the bulleye on it.
  • Facist President
A facist for a president. Thats what we got. Thank you Democrats. And you dare to call yourselves Americans?
  • Look for the Dems to go berzerk on this one!
Walgreen pharmacy is offering free clinic trips to the unemployed. OMG, you mean the evil, greedy, slimy capitalists can offer free healthcare? Only government can offer 'free' access to healthcare. Barney Frank is gonna go berzerk over this and we'll probably have hearings over this!

  • Slippery Slope
"I dont care that the President fired a private sector employee for the security of the nation and its economy."
    Stan says.
Just wait until it's your job on the line.
  • To: $mooth Operator
Actually, if you'll read AWK's post, you'll see he's talking about loving our COUNTRY, not the president.

You're the one who so consumed with ODS that you can't see the difference.
  • Chrysler + FIAT = 0
This must be the new "Chicago-style" math that Obamabots are learning in government schools.

You merge one lousy company with another, and you get a BIG lousy company headquartered in Italy run by a bunch of corrupt politicians.

    Sounds like economics, Chicago-style
  • RE: 'Right wing paranoia' by AWK
    KEY: AWK = ~ Roberta =*

~Hey, everyone, just relax. Nobody is coming to take your precious guns. Obama is not going to take over your motorcycle repair shop. The bass are still biting and the sun will still come up tomorrow. So just chill out.
*What does any of this have to do with this topic?

~If America is the great country your bumper stickers say it is, it'll do just fine . . . or do you only love your country when you particular party is in control -- if so, you're not a patriot, you are a partisan hack.
*I would never vandalize my own property by putting any stickers or magnetic signs of any kind on it. In fact, the majority of automobiles on the road (at least around the metro Atlanta area) that have bumper stickers on them are liberal owned vehicles. Is AWK some kind of alias for Alec Baldwin? Why do you call someone a Hack? It makes no sense what-so-ever… Do you have some kind of private definition for this word?
    Hack
    n.
    1. A rough, irregular cut made by hacking.
    2. A tool, such as a hoe, used for hacking.
    3. A blow made by hacking.
    4. A rough, dry cough.
  • Food prices skyrocket
Yeah, I can't wait until our food supplies are used to "efficiently" fuel our automobiles.
Using food for fuel sources will have a global impact -- not on reducing 'global warming' but in increasing world hunger.
  • AWK calling the kettle black
AWK wrote: "do you only love your country when you particular party is in control -- if so, you're not a patriot, you are a partisan hack."

That would describe every democrat fascist/statist who tore down President Bush at every, single turn of the way for the last 8 years.

Funny how the tables have turned, isn't it? We'll respect YOUR president just as much as you respected OUR president.
  • Chrysler merger with FIAT.
Strange that Chrysler is being pushed to merge with FIAT. We lived in Greece for two years and Turkey for 2 years. Practically the only car you can get for a reasonable price is FIAT and everyone that had one thought it was junk. If the President is pushing a merger, perhaps he should consider another company.
  • Barney's at it again
now he wants to determine everyone's pay
    http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/politics/Beyond-AIG-A-Bill-to-let-Big-Government-Set-Your-Salary-42158597.html
As turner brown responded to my question; "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing" Edmund Burke
I e-mailed this link out with the statement; first AIG bonuses, then all employees of any company taking a bailout. Do nothing and eventually it will be your pay they will determine.
  • I'm just waiting...
on the invention of Reardon metal.
  • Stan
Don't worry Stan, my daughters (USMC and USAF) have VOLUNTEERED to protect your freedoms, so that you can get on this site every day, and others like it I'm sure, and show just how ignorant you are.
  • AWK,
Obama & Co. are spending a billion dollars an hour - money they don't have, and which YOU are legally obligated to pay. Is this not a problem?
  • Other consequences....
There are other things here that have struck me. I see a lot of comments here about the greed of the corporation, but in terms of the auto workers, let's not forget the union had a lot to do with putting them in the financial position they are in. Has it occurred to anyone what this step has done to the union? They have now been stripped of their biggest weapon - the strike. (1) as de facto federal employees since they are existing on taxpayer money, they are no longer allowed to strike. (Federal employees are required to sign an affidavit to the effect that they will never strike.) (2) As an industry considered "to big to fail" because of the stability and security of our national economy, they will also be unable to strike. (Any industry considered vital to the security of the nation is barred from striking by labor laws.) Yes, this has been GROSSLY abused, but it's still been a basic right of the worker to protest unfair management practices. PrezBO just drove a stake into the unions, spec. the auto union, who spent SO much money contributing to his campaigns. I'm surprised Neal didn't glom on to this immediately considering how much he hates the unions.
  • Food
tying fuel sources to food sources is a recipe for disaster worldwide. Let's find another way to make fuel cheaper than making food sources more expensive in the process. That is crazy.
  • E85
E85 may be cleaner but for my car to run on it, costs twice as much because it burns twice as fast. I don't know about you guys, but in my hard times, I am trying to make the dollar stretch for longer
  • Right wing paranoia
The right wing hosts like Boortz and Glenn Beck are taking advantage of your gullibility to fan the flames of ideological passion, thereby generating great radio and TV ratings.

They are stirring up paranoia by presenting an apocalyptic version of America under an Obama administration and a democratic Congress.

Hey, everyone, just relax. Nobody is coming to take your precious guns. Obama is not going to take over your motorcycle repair shop. The bass are still biting and the sun will still come up tomorrow. So just chill out.

If America is the great country your bumper stickers say it is, it'll do just fine . . . or do you only love your country when you particular party is in control -- if so, you're not a patriot, you are a partisan hack.
  • Fuel Efficient Cars
Amazing how Mr. Obama is clueless about how the market place works. Yes, he can insist fuel efficient cars are to be built. But without concessions from the UAW, the cars won't be affordable unless we the taxpayers will subsidize the difference.

And is it not interesting that Ford gets the UAW consessions but GM does not; makes one wonder if the UAW knew in advance that Waggoner would be let go so they did not have to concede anything. If Mr. Obama can't stand up to Speaker Pelosi, what makes one think he will stand up to the UAW??
  • cORPORATIONS ARE EEEEVIL AND GREEDY
If all corporations are inherently eeevil and destined to spiral into self serving institutions of greed wherein no one in the entire world except for George Bush and connected, "lucky" CEOS benefit from their existence, why is the left so intent on making the Federal Govenment a defacto CORPORTATION?

Watching people applaud and cheer our Federal Government's tranformation into a Kleptocracy is disgusting. The logic of all of this is absurd.

As if having a D by your name makes you a altruistic philantropist.
  • OK Neal - Tell us what we can really do?
OK Neal - Tell us what we can really do? Instead of just getting people all hyped up, how about giving us a real course of action. I really do like what you have to say, most of the time, but I am and I hate to say this is that you are more concern with rateings then REALLY HELPING. I agree with Ben and others this country is in MAJOR trouble. Voting will not fix it. If Voting could really fix it, the GOV would make it ileagle. We can raise up in a armed conflict against the GOV, because the control the military. I was in the military and willing to fight but I really do not see this as a real solution. So whats left give up and move away?

It is truly a sad day. The Gov is out of control and people with media exposure like you is to concerned about ratings, rather then bring the masses together in a organized way to help bring about REAL CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN!!!!
  • Nationalization
I have noticed that the press (including Neal) has refused to say that Obama has nationalized GM. But that is what has happened. If Obama can fire their CEO & decide what they are going to manufacture & how they are going to be run, he has nationalized the automobile industry. (Including Ford -- if government is running GM, they will change the rules in such a way that Ford will not be able to survive.)

Of course we can't call it nationalization because that's what dictators in banana republics do. If we admit that Obama nationalized GM, we will have to admit that the US is no better than Venezuela.
  • none of his business
Do you think Obama even undersstands how the internal combustion engine works? Even in concept? Do you think hes ever changed his own oil?

Does that even matter? No.. Obama's vision is irrelevant.. because his position does not lend itself to running a private company from the whitehouse. The constitution has a very strict and narrow set of guidelines for his job.. and this 'aint one of em.

so step off Obama.. and find something constructive to do that is within your limited powers.
  • Government nationalization
I would bet that now the automakers see that it would have been better to go into bankruptcy to begin with. They get taken over by the Obama corporation, told what to do and how to run the company, fire the employees and THEN still get told to go into bankruptcy.Shows you can't trust the administration. The end result is the same but the company gets put through hoops.I think Ford foresaw this coming.
  • government take over
I used to read about WWII and wonder how could all those people let it happen? I finally realized that most people back then didn't have access to the amount of info to stop the madness. With the almost unlimited access to the internet, what will future generations say about our failure to stop this current madness?
  • Autoworkers go to college?
According to the quote from the president's book: "The new jobs created could be filled by American workers trained with new skills and a world-class education, from elementary school to college." Being from Lansing, MI, I have quite a few autoworkers in the family and have been friends with many, but none of which have gone to college before working for either GM or Ford. At the time, there was an "interest group" (read "waiting list") to get on with the UAW that high school kids would sign onto sophomore or junior year of high school and then they would be hired on after graduation if there was an opening and their parents were members. Still though, why on earth would you pay all that money for college and then become a welder? What's the point?
  • Ben asked....
..."What's happening to our country and how did we let it get to this?"

The answer is simple. The vast majority of people are idiots. That's all there is to it. Obama's election is proof of that.

I'm from Canada, but the USA as we knew it is finished. There's no turning back. What we did to Canada in the sixties with Trudeau, you guys are doing today with that marxist you have running the country now.

Damned shame. I was always pulling for you. Now, it really doesn't make any difference any more.
  • Answering the question
"Are you comfortable with this level of government enterprise in the marketplace?"

Well, let's compare it to what happens when the government DOESN'T oversee, regulate, or otherwise get involved in the fluctuations of the marketplace.

Oh, yeah: disaster. Recession. Job losses. We've already seen that outcome. So yes, more oversight and public accountability ARE a good idea.

    Next question?
  • Government intervention
This whole Government intervention in the private sector is REALLY scaring me.... at what point will people realize this is bad and say ENOUGH??
  • re Jon Baker
You speak the truth. Sadly the great majority of our fellow citizens are totally blind to this fact.
  • He wasn't fired
In all fairness, he wasn't fired. PrezBo asked Wagoner to step down and he did. Wagoner could have very well stayed in place and nothing could have been done about it unless the board voted him out.
  • Gone too far, ya think?
I think it has gone WAAAAAY to far and both parties are to blame. I'm sure if Barney and Dodd wouldn't have gotten their way with Freddie and Fannie this housing crisis wouldn't have been as bad. But Bush is to blame as well. Remember the Enron and WorldCom accounting scandals in 2001/2002? Bush created a task force to go after some of these thugs. And as a result of increased inforcement some of these rascals went to prison for a long time. But prosecutions decreased over the years after Enron. Could some of this mess be attributed to this? Could be? A business transaction has to be based on trust and integrity! Without both, markets will fail and government will fill the vacuum left behind! We have to realize that Wall Street and the business sector is not free of thugs!
  • President can do this
If the auto companies didnt want Obama to intrude in their business affairs, then why did they beg the Federal government for money on CSPAN? I dont care that the President fired a private sector employee for the security of the nation and its economy. If the President can draft me and send me to war(I wouldnt go, I would be in Canada), then I dont care if he fires a rich man from a job where he will still be rich.
  • Green jobs
Notice how the greens keep talking about how many green jobs are going to be added by Obama's liberal policies and taxes. They never talk about how many jobs will be lost. Looks like a net loss of jobs to me.
  • Re: Ben, good question, BUT, you already know the answer!
Firstly, I like your moniker, I use it quite frequently during verbal intercourse with the "unwashed". Have you ever heard of Edmund Burke? Here's what he had to say about doing nothing!
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. Edmund Burke
  • Audacity of Hopeless
Have you ever read such a childish bunch of feel-good, useless hype? What a pile of Pelosi.
  • Barney Frank
It is ridiculous to say Barney Frank is the most responsible person for this mess. He was in a fairly large minority when all this was going down, if the GOP wanted to make changes, it was in their power to do so. You are bestowing way more power to a minority member than he deserves.
  • Ethanol
I don't get how people think this ethanol stuff is so fantastic for the environment. This stuff lowers water tables and totally screws with local ecosystems. Sure with gasoline you have a slight gain in the waste products from the combustion, but with newer catalytic converters this is drastically minimized.
Also, not only is ethanol just as bad or possibly worse than gas for the environment, but the input/output ratio for combustion is very close to 1/1 where as with gas much better.
If PresBo wants something that will do some good then he needs to pull his head out his butt and look at these gasoline powered hydrogen cars some companies have been researching. it would be easier to get a hydrogen atom off a carbon atom than the same hydrogen atom off an oxygen atom, and these cars are said to be 80% fuel efficient, but that is not something that Obama thinks would be good for us the people to have...
  • Barney Frank
I definitely think the Obama administration is turning the American Ship in the wrong direction. We may never get headed in the right direction again.

Regarding the comment:"if Barney Frank hadn't stood in the way of efforts of people like George Bush and John McCain to intervene in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac years ago."

Congressman Frank definitely carries some blame here, but he's 1 congressman. Surely he couldn't have stopped Bush and the GOP controlled congress if they'd have pulled out all the stops to fix Fannie Mae when they had the power.

I think we all have a share in the blame by allowing the DEMS to run the whole show because we were angry at the GOP.
  • Barney Frank
Hard to defend Barney Frank, but the GOP was in charge for all those years in question, I think you are giving him way too much credit. If GOP wanted Fannie and Freddie changes, they could have gotten it done.
  • Which is it?
    Fascism or Marxism?

Ben, I'd like to know the same thing.
  • Ethanol isn't the savior
What is it with this love of ethanol? Every car in the US could easily be converted to run on Ethanol. The problem is that ethanol isn't available. A sure way to kill the auto industry is to force development of a car that doesn't have an available fuel supply.

For those we may need another example, just look at how government runs government. The government is further in debt than any US corporation, and we suddenly think the government can manage everything.
  • Bailout and Bankruptcy
So our money has been wasted?
  • This may do it!
Americans love their cars. Once the government screws that up enough, it might motivate enough citizens to cure this problem.
  • Barney ...and Chris
Yep, Barney is easy to blame, especially since he is so insipiently stupid. Even an insipient fool needs a partner. Barney's is Chris Dodd. Barney comes by his idiocy the natural way. Chris Dodd's motivation appears to be more primal...What's in it for Chris? Good deal on loans, good deal on Irish investments, opulent contributions, and bonuses for his lady. Maybe Chris should be the poster child for GREED!
  • Govt. control
This is getting scary! I am waiting for Obama's infrastructure plans to include building the new Ministry of Peace, Ministry of Love, Ministry of Plenty and Ministry of Truth. And why not.
  • The Manchurian President
The President of the United States has fired a private citizen? This is not the President of the United States. This is the president from Manchuria. Or rather, the fascist dicatator from Manchuria.

In a mere three months, the country of my birth has been transformed from a consitutional republic into a fascist dictatorship where private companies can be owned outright by the government and private citizens can be ordered about like slaves. And it happened without a shot or even a whimper.

Is this what it was like to be a citizen of Germany on January 30, 1933?
  • What's happening to our country
and how did we let it get to this?
  • Ethanol
Do you suppose Obama still believes the "horsesqueeze" (as Boortz would say) about ethanol? I see a lot of wishful thinking in that passage from his book ... lots of "could". Is that just part of the HOPE?
  • That O is giving billions of taxpayer dollars to a company with the caveat that it sell itself to a foreign company is obviously wildly bizzarely idiotic.

Increasingly bothering me more is that the most powerful man in the world is obsessing over a mere half-dozen companies. By name, he's fixating on GM, Chrysler, AIG, and only a few others. This is NOT a "big picture" leader who would understand that our economy is driven by hundreds of thousands (or millions?) of businesses, and that fixing the economy requires broad solutions.

O is proving the real problem with collectivist/authoritarian governments: leaders are humans too, and are incapable of understanding (much less addressing) the overwhelming complexity of a large society. Freedom, coupled with republic-style government, is the only way to success: only boots-on-the-ground businessmen know enough details, and have enough motivation, to make it work.
