GOVERNMENT EDUCATION AT WORK

Just a little updated on our wonderful government education system in this country. According to the national survey commissioned by the California Academy of Sciences:

  • Only 53% of adults know how long it takes for the Earth to revolve around the Sun.
  • Only 59% of adults know that the earliest humans and dinosaurs did not live at the same time.
  • Only 47% of adults can roughly approximate the percent of the Earth's surface that is covered with water.*
  • Only 21% of adults answered all three questions correctly.

I've said before that the most dangerous group of people in this country ... and that would include drug dealers, gang bankers and terrorist cells ... is the teacher's unions.

What others are saying

  • govt mediocrity
I simply want our schools to work on the same quality-assurance incentives that tend to successfully work just about everywhere else in the world's free markets. If that makes me a crazy right-winger I'd hate to see an enlightened left-winger.
  • Re: LiberalHater
Well, I guess you could refute my argument with facts, but you didn't even technically need to mention my being a moron.
  • Copyleft
Since you're on the subject of "rotating", I've got something you can rotate on pal.
  • Lent Visor
You're a moron. Do I really need to say more than that?
  • Actually
States with stronger unionization of teachers have demonstrably better education systems. This idea that the teachers unions are causing problems is nonsense. There aren't any teacher's unions in Georgia, where Neal is from.

Actually, "Blue States" in general have better education systems. Government can do a good job at some things. Red state government (some of which are of course conservative democrats) can't.

If there's one thing that Obama's wrong about, it's that there is no red state / blue state divide. Red states are fairly consistently backwards and ignorant, and blue states are fairly consistently productive and progressive. Almost all the exceptions are political exceptions as well (i.e. Atlanta is productive and progressive in a Red state, but is itself Blue).

Additionally, a significant portion of the people who didn't know the relative chronology of humans and dinosaurs have to be willingly ignorant creationists (or whatever the Republicans consider politically correct to call these people), who are obviously more likely to be Republicans.
  • Bad questions
It's measures like these that make our education system bad. How does knowing the answer to any of these questions increase most peoples' ability to function productively in society (certain scientists excluded, who would have certainly answered all applicable questions correctly)? The questions Neal asks are a much more appropriate measure of ability to contribute productively to society (who pays how much tax, etc) since one of the things people do is vote, and voting while not knowing even approximately how taxes work is counterproductive. Basic mathematics and ability to do simple word problems is another good measure. But when teachers consider it an important priority to teach young children how long starfish live, that's just irresponsible. Democrats like to spout off laundry lists of facts as a show of their intelligence (just watch the President on the West Wing TV series or the "smart" people in Gilmore Girls); I'd like to think that true conservatives pride themselves on their deep understanding of reality rather than trivial facts.
  • To: Astronomer
Actually, I think you'll find that the Earth ROTATES on its axis.

"Revolve" can also indicate rotation on an axis, OR it can mean orbiting a central body. So the Earth does, in fact, revolve around the sun.
  • Question No. 1
If you read the exact wording of Question No. 1, the correct answer is zero. The earth revolves on its axis, but it orbits the Sun. Semantics, I know, but words matter - unlike the Obama crowd, to whom 'socialism' and 'nationalize' are "just words".
  • To: CopyLeft
Regardless of what you may say to the Pauxley River tracks, there is a preponderance of evidence from other sources: (1)Trilobytes found in the fossil of a human sandal print. The trilobytes (sp) were not doubted by the evolution scientists, but they content the "sandal" is merely patterns in the rock crystalization. They seem to have missed the fosilized laces at the edge, I suppose... This is WAY more damaging to the evolutionary timescale than supposed human/dinosaur interaction
    (2) There is an abundace of human footprints found embedded in 250-million-year-old coal veins in Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and westward toward the Rocky Mountains.
    (3) According to evolutionists, coal was formed during the Paleozoic age millions of years before the birth of man. However, near Glasgow, Scotland, under a mass of boulders, an iron instrument was discovered embedded in a coal seam seven feet under the surface.
citing of sources can be found at:
    http://www.apologeticspress.org/articles/2609
Do not let the bible references that may be present hurt your brain too much, there is much cited scientific evidence at this website.
  • Gang Bankers
Back in the day, we called them "Loan Sharks."
  • Government Education
It should probably read "Only 41% of people know that man and dinosaurs lived at the same time." The other 59% are wrong.
  • Government Education
    Here are my results:
You correctly answered 6 out of 6 questions. A total of 29145 participants have so far averaged 4.6 correct answers.

And I attended a public school... Okay, 30 years ago and one with real teachers and real paddles!!
  • Believe it or Not
This is really scary, but so is this.
Friday night 3/13 on Bill Marher's show, guess who also said the Teachers Union is dangerous ---- Bill Maher !!!
Who would ever think Neal and Bill would agree on anything.
Check it out if you don't believe it.
  • "Mr" it's not us denying climate change...
...it's yall denying the climate has been changing as long as it has existed, and it always will whether we are here or not. "Climate change," is a self-fulfilling prophecy to scare the ignorant and stupid. It doesn't take a lettered genius to see that if you can't accurately model weather, you aren't going accurately model climate. Or is verification by predictable and repeatable results no longer part of the scientific method?

If algore really thought we were changing the climate he wouldn't be globetrotting in his Gulfstream. Heal thyself before preaching at me.
  • To: Madisson
The Paluxy River "human-dinosaur" tracks are a hoax... and one so embarrassingly weak that even other creationists don't recommend citing it.

    http://ncseweb.org/cej/2/4/paluxy-man-creationist-piltdown
    http://www.asa3.org/ASA/PSCF/1988/PSCF9-88Hastings.html

Christians don't _have_ to be held hostage to ignorant pseudo-science. The evolution-deniers are fringe nuts, but their views have nothing to do with legitimate Christianity. Don't fall for their lies just because they claim to be doing God's work.
  • Who says our expensive education system is failing?
They are turning out the ignorant dependent drones they intended, from the dp and teacher's union's perspective it's an unqualified success.
  • My guess: You got it wrong too.
The exact answers if you were wondering:
    1. 365.242199 mean solar days (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth's_Orbit)
    2. Under debate and has to do with animal classifications. (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_fossil) AKA some dinosaurs still live today. If you asked a more specific question I think more people would have gotten that one correct.
    3. I would have said 2/3. The more precise number is 70.8%; slightly more than 2/3. (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth)

And just because you don't know some inane fact doesn't mean you don't have the mental capacity to find the answer if you needed it.
  • Is this a joke?
Only 53% of adults know how long it takes for the Earth to revolve around the Sun.

What are you talking about? The question is moot. The Sun revolves around the Earth.

I'd also offer it's a meaningless idea, this sidereal period thing, the facts that is, to a lot of American Idol fans. When's the next season is what's important.

Only 59% of adults know that the earliest humans and dinosaurs did not live at the same time.

Dinosaurs? They're not real. God inserted bones that might suggest creatures into layers of earth to confuse the descendants of Adam.

School *AND* Church are fault here. So who's got the third leg here? Government?

Only 47% of adults can roughly approximate the percent of the Earth's surface that is covered with water.*

I'd have said 3/4. It's actually 71%. Then again, when it rains isn't it really 100%?

And what's defined as "cover?" An inch? A foot? A layer of snow or ice? Rain wetted streets? To what depth does "cover" mean?

Only 21% of adults answered all three questions correctly.

Not really the best questions, are they? You can make any person look stupid by asking them the right question.
  • Educated Unemployed People
Does everyone still believe that ALL kids need to go to College? Don't make me laugh! Most can't make it in college, thats what trade schools were for. Now most are too lazy for the skilled trades, thats what the MALL is for. So what if they believe Abraham rode a dinosaur? Like the old saying goes, "The world needs ditch diggers too" and did anyone ask these people if they CARED? Most I think could care less.If their drinking buddies thought for a minute they were intelligent they'd get the crap kicked out them! HA!
  • Gov't Education at Work?!?
Isn't that something of an oxymoron, Neal?

Perhaps you should have entitled your post "Teachers Unions at Work" and the irony would be more apparent.
  • Aspiring Teacher
As a 27 year old education major who has gone BACK to college in order to teach I am not surprised. The system that our public schools fuction under is a disgrace. Where is the accountability? If I didn't preform in my job in the medical field I would be FIRED! Why are teachers who fail to educate students allowed to keep their jobs. I left out my last name becasue they would blacklist me from getting a job if I revealed my idenity. Who cares that I could properly educate students!
  • Well, this is sort of like some lunatics denying the reality of climate change. Boortz's take on science is fairly interesting, in that science is something to be accepted only when it suits his own agenda. He hates it when fundamentalists use their hokey science to talk about 6 day creationism, but when some blowhard talks about how climate change is a sham, he jumps all over it.

No wonder, no one outside the Boortz Cult takes him seriously.
  • YECs
"Only 59% of adults know that the earliest humans and dinosaurs did not live at the same time."

Sounds like a godly person that knows that adam rode a pet dinosaur
  • HA
Glad to know I'm one of the 21%, but it's still sad.
  • Isn't it ironic
Isn't it ironic that we're commenting on our government education system and we can't even spell and proofread correctly. I'm no fan of the school system, but come on Neal! You've got to do better than gang "bankers".
  • Dinosaurs And Humans
While I generally don't take sides on the Dinosaurs and Humans co-existing "fact", What about the fossilized human foot prints that happen to be inside fossilized dinosaur foot prints?

    Here is a webaddress:
    http://www.bible.ca/tracks/taylor-trail.htm

Maybe what we think we know isn't as sure as we thought.

But I do agree that many government educated people would not do the work necessary to find disproofs for many of the world's current assumptions. I dought the would even try to remember the most basic vocabulary or facts.
  • Copyleft, Hugo's Ghost, & Stan GayBull
No doubt they, all three, failed this test. I had my dog take the exam and they faired better.
  • goverment education
and over 50% vote democrat! Wonder why
  • GANG BANKERS
Yeah, I'd say they're among the most dangerous people in the nation right about now.

ololol let's continue to deride public education while failing miserably at basic spelling and grammar.
  • When the left has control of education, media and entertainment
As Stalin said, he could get the US to turn Socialist not by using bullets, but by taking control of the Media, Entertainment and Education. Lo and behold if that hasn't happened and an avowed Socialist was just elected as the President of the United States. The Government Education system was not a failure. Quite the contrary, it facilitated the election of a Socialist to power in the US.
  • teacher unions...
    New mottos for teachers:
“If students don’t get it, push them through”
“Competition lowers self-esteem, feelings trumps knowledge”
“Keeping them stupid so unions can grow”
“Being in the top 10 of world education is overrated”
    “Ensuring mediocre jobs are filled”
    “Lower scores, more money”

About the questions, how long it takes for the Earth to revolve around the Sun? WHAT!!! The earth goes around the sun; this is a trick question, time for an inquisition because everyone knows the earth is the center of everything
Humans and dinosaurs did not live together? How do you explain the cartoon “The Flintstones”?
About the earth's surface that is covered with water question, of course they got this wrong because they are using Owl Gore’s prediction of 90% or something like that, thanks to global warming
  • Gubmint edjukashun
    Gang BANKERS? ......actually sounds reasonable.
  • huh?
Is that gang bankers.... or gang bangers?
  • Neal Speaking
And he wonders why he has never been invited to give a commencement speech
