I make my living from advertisements. Sitting here and criticizing ads, then, would seem to be a bit self-defeating. Sorry, can't help it. Some of the stuff I see on television and hear on the radio is so stupefyingly idiotic that I just can't help myself.

I've been commenting for years about loud, screaming car commercials. I have many friends who are car dealers and work in dealerships. This goes from Chevy to Jaguar ... one end to the other. If you will listen to commercials for the various types of cars you will notice that the louder the commercial, the cheaper the car. Now here's my theory .. and it's a bit insulting, I'll admit. The more educated you are the more money you're going to make, and the more money you make the more expensive car you are likely to buy. So .. education dictates how you roll. Now since the loud and obnoxious commercials are ALWAYS for the cheaper cars, this must mean that the louder the commercial the dumber the advertiser thinks you are. I've actually heard a commercial lately where the announcer keeps yelling "BAM!" at the top of his lungs. Trust me, they're not trying to sell you a Mercedes.

By the way .... I just bought a Chevy Equinox, so don't give me a hard time here.

What brings this on? Well, I was watching the tube today when I came across one of those spots asking you take all of your old gold and shove it into an envelope; then mail it to someone and they'll send you a check. In ordinary times it would be difficult to convince me that someone would actually dump a bunch of their gold into a mailing pack and send it off to people they don't know .. and then sit back and see if they get a check. I say in ordinary times ... but these aren't ordinary times. We have people who voted for a man with absolutely no experience and a cute slogan about "change" to be the president. If you'll do that, you'll send your gold off to someone you don't know and hope you get a check in return.

My guess is that there are more Obama voters driving the less expensive cars than there are driving Jags.

What others are saying

  • AWK said...
"Those who live in major cities (500,000 or more) - our nation's centers of culture and business"

...not to mention corruption, crime, and decay.

Do you think there's any chance the fact that major-city-dwellers tend to lean liberal in their voting might have something to do with the rotting conditions, astronomical cost of living, and economic dysfunction of the governments in said cities?

Also, it's worth noting that the auto industry in the "rural south" doesn't have to beg Congress for billions of dollars in order to stay afloat.
  • Obama's Popularity at 60+%, but
how come nobody reports that almost 57% of America believes we are headed in the WRONG direction?

    Source: RealClearPolitics.com
  • Copyleft ---- Those can not do, Teach!
I heard that saying years ago and I beleive that it is true. Now do not get me wrong, I have met some GREAT TEACHERS. As far as Public Service - they think they are smart and talk a mean game but in reality they are as Dumb as you!!!
  • 'Scuse you?
Most of the nation voted for Obama
    By Stan Gable

Um Stan, most of the nation didn't vote at all ok? And of the VOTERS who voted for Obama that was only 52%. Not really enough to say a big majority.

We really need to cut back the eligible voters to those that pay taxes.
  • Cash 4 Gold
"My guess is that there are more Obama voters driving the less expensive cars than there are driving Jags."

That doesn't take into account Hollywood liberals
  • cash 4 gold
Getting cash for gold jewelry isn’t necessarily a bad idea if you don’t get it to spend on consumer items. But you best do it as a physical transaction rather than do it through the mail. It’s obviously safer and you can bargain for the best price. When inflation really ramps up and we are in extremis and headed for hyperinflation (the probabilities for that increase by the day) owning gold will possibly mean survival as opposed to non survival. However, jewelry is 18 karat or less so it won’t be as useful as gold coins like the American Buffalo coin which is 24 karat (99.9999% pure). BTW all gold coins are not 24K. There are also other options like gold exchange traded funds, gold mining company exchange traded funds and regular mutual funds or organizations like goldmoney.com. So you could get rid of your gold jewelry and invest the cash in gold backed securities or gold coins which most likely will be the only form of money that will be accepted by anyone once there is a run on the dollar. People who say this scenario is silly don’t have a clue about economics. Read an economic history of countries like Germany (Weimar Republic) in the 1920’s and you will see how governments get to the knee of an exponential inflation curve. Once things get moving it can all happen very fast, folks!

Caveat: The U. S. government confiscated monetary gold (coins) and any 24 karat gold in the 1930’s.
  • Selling your gold
Neal I understand what you mean but please don't lump all companies into a steaming pile on this one. I have been raised by a person that makes a solid living for his family by doing just what you think is not smart.

My father has for 30 years run a business that buys gold for cash, he has generally done it on a less personal scale but n these times he is offering it to normal people and the return is high. Cash 4 gold is a HUGE rip off your getting less than 25% of the market price. Its stealing in base form but there are companies that are legitimate. Others have linked sites here so lets try this one.

Christian family, conservative views, trust worthy.
  • These commercials are so annoying. I was laughing to myself a bit to see Liddy hawking a "buy gold now!" company. Sure it isn't the same thing, but it's just as shady.
  • cash 4 gold
A fence, plain and simple. Makes it so easy for a thief to simply mail in the stolen loot and get clean money back in the mail.
  • Cash for Gold
    Check out this site: http://www.cockeyed.com/

He did an analysis on the Cash4Gold deal. It is interesting the new lows some businesses will stoop to.
  • Fence by Mail
Sure .... "Send us all the gold stuff you ripped off. We'll fence it for you and send you a few bucks". Or "Cops onto you at your local pawn shop?"
  • Stan GayBull
Wow, I am abslutely impressed with that statement Mr. GayBull. I feel so much more intelligent having learned from your comments. I wish I could give up my life and move back home with my mother like you, because apparently that has benefited you in ways we could never understand. BRAVO STAN!!!
  • Cash for Gold
A group did an experiment where they used a gold ring valued at $58 based on current gold prices at the time. They sent it in to Cash 4 Gold and got back $7, just seven dollars. The same ring actually got $18 dollars at a pawn shop. Even the pawn shop is paying over double what Cash 4 Gold is, but you're still getting ripped off by both!
  • DUH
Of course most people that voted for Obama drive cheaper cars. It all makes sense. Most of the nation voted for Obama, and most of the nation doesnt own german automobiles.
  • Hugo's word-borrowing and I wonder if Copyleft knows gold is more than just plating for rappers' teeth
I love how Hugo's Ghost is turning Boortz's favorite word against him. Genius. But Boortz introduced that word to his political discourse first Hugo. Good try.
And Copyleft, last time I checked, Gold is wealth 'we can touch.' Humanity has used it as such for milennia.
I know your friends in office want to institute the new world currency, but gold has long been that currency, friend.
  • Well...
I DO see a lot of black people in Jags. But they're probably leased.
  • Demographics of Obama vote don't support your stereotype
Re Boortz's closing comments about the vehicles Obama voters drive.

Boortz would have you believe that the profile of Obama voters is one of uneducated low-income losers. Quite the contrary. Exit polls reveal that Obama won the college-educated vote 50%-48% (while the college-educated had previously gone republican going back to at least 1988). The gap was even bigger among those with advanced degrees; this group went 58-40 for Obama. Those with family incomes of $200K+ went 52-46 Obama. Those who live in major cities (500,000 or more) - our nation's centers of culture and business - voted 70-28 for Obama.

The point is the republican party is a dwindling group of angry, older, less educated, Protestant white males from the rural south and midwest.

As America's attitudes and demographics evolve, if the republican party establishment continues to mandate Limbaugh-esque ideological purity and absolute party-line conformity on its troops, it's going to be out of power for a long, long time.
  • Another hint that an ad targets the stupid
Any displays of cash, particularly "fanned-out" like in the Cash4Gold ad, tells me they think their target market spends their spare time drooling.
  • Gooooollllldddd
    www.offeringcommonsense.blogspot.com

"I had no idea my gold was worth so much money," says one poor woman on this commercial. Yeah, lady, your gold was probably worth 4 times the check you got.
  • Commercials
Don't worry, Boortz mymidons-the second this company offers Neal big bucks for an endorsement, the Talkmaster will change his tune. Remember how he used to trash BMW cars until a dealer gave him one? And don't forget those Dodge Ram commercials...oh wait, those went away when he started selling Chevys. Just make sure you buy whatever the big man is selling you, myrmidons!
  • Faulty Logic
"The more educated you are, the more money you make..." Questionable on the face of it, since many educated people have higher priorities than becoming millionaires. Public service and teaching, for example.

"... and therefore, the more expensive car you'll buy." Hah. Not likely! More like "The more _insecure and vain_ you are, the more expensive a car you'll buy."

SMART people buy sensible midline vehicles with low maintenace costs and high reliability--you know, the smart-consumer choice. Insecure losers like celebrities and SUV-stockbrokers buy expensive cars.

Oh, and the "buy gold, wealth you can touch" commercials that exploit that same shallow ignorance? Mostly on Fox News and talk radio. How about that?
  • Commercials/Prezbo
Maybe if a few Obama voters meet at Waffle House, they could pick enough gold from their teeth to pay Timmy Geithner's taxes!
