AUTO INDUSTRY VS. WALL STREET

We are seeing a real divide starting to unfold. Again. After yesterday's "tough love" from the Obama administration ... auto workers are now complaining that the Obama administration treated auto workers worse than Wall Street. Maybe that's because the United Auto Workers presents more of a threat to the automobile makers than Wall Street Does. I'm really a little tired of whining from auto workers. If they had been a bit more concerned about the continuing health of their employers.

What others are saying

  • Copyleft...so close to being right
    Copyleft,

My analogy is 100% correct. Symbiosis is what it SHOULD be....but it is not with the UAW. True, corporations cannot exist without their workers and the successful ones understand that.

But just like Reason posted below, there is no symbiosis here, with the workers taking everything they can without regard for the consequences.

    My analogy stands.
  • Copyleft
Unfortunately, with union workers what you have is a mentality that they should constantly get MORE for doing LESS. There's no symbiosis to be found that way. They truly are more like parasites, gorging themselves on the life blood of the host with absolutely no concern for the consequence.
  • 3 LEFTS MAKE A RIGHT
I'm so tired of hearing anyone whinning "well, they did it for Wallstreet why not for so an so, its not fair" Just listen up, its just like our daddys told us LIFE AIN'T FAIR AND TWO WRONGS DON'T MAKE A RIGHT(although 3 lefts do).No blanket bail out should be used for each industry although I would rather see no bailout at all. Bankruptcy court laws already in place would decide whats fair and have the power of the court to back them, not like the bailouts that are only using the governments favorite solution-throw money at it till it gets better or goes away. COPYLEFT! YOUR BOTH WRONG AND RIGHT. G.M. and the UAW,like symbiots supplied each others needs but both were parasites on the auto buyers market who turned to better Japanese products made by american workers who were not as greedy as to kill their employers company.
  • UAW members
Hey, you UAW guys voted for this dork so live with it. Go suck eggs!
  • The union problem will be solved....
when GM is liquidated. If only the unions would infest the federal government and cause its ruin as well...

    Every union company fails. Period.
  • To: TwistedSaint
Wrong analogy... what you're looking for is "symbiosis." The parent company also needs the workers if IT wants to survive. If it won't look after the welfare of the workers, a company is doomed.

Looks like GM's executives forgot that little principle, didn't they? And you'll sure never hear it mentioned on Neal's show.... (grin)
  • A Parasite Should Understand
    Copyleft,

As a liberal parasite, I'd think you would at least understand that if the host dies, so does the parasite. The same goes for the autoworkers. Concern for the welfare of GM WOULD be in their own self-interest. But they are too short-sighted to even see that.
  • auto workers
Wonder how many voted for the big O? If they did, who gives a crap if they're whining...you're getting what you voted for.
  • Auto workers lament
Given enough time,Obama will disappoint all of his "cool aid drinkers".I just hope there is enough of America left for us to save when we undo all of this Marxist's programs.
  • union cry babies
I'm loving this. They didn't want to risk losing their contract in bankruptcy court, so they screamed for bailout. W gives it to them, and unloads the hot potato on the new guy. Now, their savior is singing the same song: restructure or no more money. Suddenly, W looks pretty smart, or shifty, depending on how you lean.
  • auto workers
I think the last sentence fails to be a complete thought, government school's strike again!!!
  • Bankruptcy for GM
You, and other AM radio talk show hosts have been preaching all along that bankruptcy, and subsequent restructuring for GM and Chrysler are the only way that that they can void those awful UAW contracts, job banks etc. Bankruptcy is the only way GM can resurface as leaner and meaner.

So what's your problem with Obama wanting to push the avenue of bankruptcy? It beats the alternative of pumping, yet another large amount of taxpayer dollars into failing auto companies and their overpriced unions.
  • I'm a little tired too!
    Michael,

The reason the gobmint didn't want to let AIG fail is because AIG insures the gubmint's retirement funds.
  • Toxic Tim's secret
Here's part of the reason for the difference in approaches to the auto takeover and WS.

  • That doesn't make sense
Why should the workers have "been a bit more concerned about the continuing health of their employers"?

I thought pure self-interest was the libertarian ideal! After all, Neal would never suggest that the employers show any measure of concern for the health and welfare of employees.....
  • UAW and Wall Street
I don't think you can blame the auto worker for the automakers agreeing to some of these demands. The Big 3 have done their very best to put themselves out of business IMO.

    Wall Street - Democrat
    UAW - Democrat

Hmmm. This alienation of two groups could work in the favor of conservatives. No if the One could just piss off the TV journalists...
  • Let GM File Bankruptcy
Let the auto manufacturers file for bankruptcy, that way the assinine UAW contracts would be null and void and they ALL would have to start over. Better yet, move the auto jobs down here, a Right to Work state, and by golly I bet there would be more than enough people willing to fill those jobs at a decent wage, and would actually GASP work (instead of that assinine job banks crap that the UAW spouts).

Why should the rest of us taxpayers have to pay to make sure all the GM employees, retired/active/spouses etc., continue to get their free health care? I don't get free health care, I work hard and I pay a very hefty monthly premium for my healthcare. But of course the UAW doesn't care about that...

Dismantle the union, let them re-organize (and that includes obviously new management) and hey move South, there are plenty of people who would gladly take the jobs without being UAW.
  • I'm a little tired too!
I am little tired of the unions too, but I am equally tired of the welfare queen CEOs of these companies that took TARP money complaining that they were 'forced' to take the money! Both GM and AIG had an existing facility to restructure their debt called bankruptcy! Unfortunately the politicians didn't allow that to happen!
