On the air the other day, I read a letter from Greg Knox. The letter was simply intended for his mother, but has become an Internet sensation. Here we have another letter that is making the rounds. This one is from Ed Barnett of Wichita Falls and it is a Letter to the Editor he submitted on February 6th to the Wichita Falls, Texas Times Record News...

Dear IRS,

I am sorry to inform you that I will not be able to pay taxes owed April 15 , but all is not lost.

I have paid these taxes: accounts receivable tax, building permit tax, CDL tax, cigarette tax, corporate income tax, dog license tax, federal income tax, unemployment tax, gasoline tax, hunting license tax, fishing license tax, waterfowl stamp tax, inheritance tax, inventory tax, liquor tax, luxury tax, Medicare tax, city, school and county property tax (up 3.3 percent last 4 years), real estate tax, social security tax, road usage tax, toll road tax, state and city sales tax, recreational vehicle tax, state franchise tax, state unemployment tax, telephone federal excise tax, telephone federal state and local surcharge tax, telephone minimum usage surcharge tax, telephone state and local tax, utility tax, vehicle license registration tax, capitol gains tax, lease severance tax, oil and gas assessment tax, Colorado property tax, Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma and New Mexico sales tax, and many more that I can't recall but I have run out of space and money.

When you do not receive my check April 15, just know that it is an honest mistake.

Please treat me the same way you treated Congressmen Charles Rangel , Chris Dodd, Barney Frank and ex-Congressman Tom Daschle and, of course, your boss Timothy Geithner. No penalties and no interest.

P.S. I will make at least a partial payment as soon as I get my stimulus check.

Ed Barnett

What others are saying

  • When Taxes are Due
Taxes aren't due until you are nominated for a Cabinet post.
  • Taxation as seen by Ayn Rand
    Taxation
In a fully free society, taxation—or, to be exact, payment for governmental services—would be voluntary. Since the proper services of a government—the police, the armed forces, the law courts—are demonstrably needed by individual citizens and affect their interests directly, the citizens would (and should) be willing to pay for such services, as they pay for insurance.

The question of how to implement the principle of voluntary government financing—how to determine the best means of applying it in practice—is a very complex one and belongs to the field of the philosophy of law. The task of political philosophy is only to establish the nature of the principle and to demonstrate that it is practicable. The choice of a specific method of implementation is more than premature today—since the principle will be practicable only in a fully free society, a society whose government has been constitutionally reduced to its proper, basic functions.
  • if you don't pay by April 15th...
if you actually call the IRS and talk to them, I hear you really won't get any penalties or interest. They want your money more than they want to "punish you", it turns out
  • Re: Rick
    Rick:

Payroll and income (below a certain level) taxes, as well as a possible corporate tax cut. A lot of it is tax credits rather than rate changes, and for businesses many are limited to renewable energy and other things.
  • Tax Cuts...
Remember Obama talking about tax cuts for 95% of Americans. You never heard him state which TAX he was going to cut, or at least I never did.
  • Dear IRS Letter
I think all the people who owe the IRS should forward a similar letter. The government precedent is no one pays for penalties and interest. Why can't we?
  • As a side note.....
I am friends with a person that's an IRS agent and their principle job is "following the money trail". He commented that if he had done what our now Treasury Secretary had done for just ONE year - much less than 4 years - he would've ended up in prison.

Yep - change you can believe in.
  • That's a good one
    Hello everybody.

Here's another good one regarding welfare (which a bit of our taxes go toward supporting, thus, I think is appropriate for this thread): http://www.wnd.com/index.php?pageId=91293
  • IRS Revolt - Make it Country-Wide!!!
    Neal,

I think everyone who listens to your show should send a copy of this letter, without the signature, to the IRS on April 15th. I, personally, plan to do that very thing!

You have the ear of millions...and can make it happen!!!

    Take care....
  • Fair Tax
One of my "favorite" taxes is on the interest from savings, as pitiful as it is (maybe 3/4%). The Fair Tax is the only tax that will solve our problems. And it has "transparency".
  • Also not to nitpick
To Steve B: the US Senate IS part of Congress, so all senators, including Daschle, are congressmen (or Member of Congress, to be gender-neutral).
  • Call me crazy but I thought senators and representitives were both congressmen.....
  • This sounds crazy BUT..............................
.....this would not be a bad idea. If everyone particapated in this what will they do, I mean, if millions of Americans decided not to pay taxes what are they going to do. This could be a new "Boston Tea Party". I myself am not impressed with the new "Hope and Change" that this new administration is presenting.
  • IRS
With both my wife and myself out work, we were looking forward to our tax refund to see us through, until we received it and it was only 10% of the expected amount. Apparently we owed back taxes from 4 years ago that we were never informed about and the IRS needed the money to help fund all the new stimulus. My family is so happy that in this economy and job market were able to contribute our share and be patriotic by paying all the penalties and interest. It was especially nice not having to worry about any pesky notices from the IRS that we had any tax issues. The kicker was when the IRS seized our state refund too, even though the amount taken from our fed return covered the amount owed. I guess if all the Obama appointees had to pay their back taxes everyone needs too. Change you can believe in!
  • Not To Nitpick
Not to nitpick but Daschle was a Senator and not a congressman. I know this is semantics as Daschle was a conressman back in the day but his latest role was as Senator....and tax cheat.
  • Change we can believe it
We believe we're going to be left with change - "chump change".
  • IRS
He made a very great point, I used to own a Busniess in OKLAHOMA and you had to pay 1/2 of your sales tax EST for the next month, so I had to go in and EST for the next month that I had not sold anything. Great Job OKLAHOMA. PS just received a letter from IRS that said I owe $500 for late fees on taxes that I filed a extension on, received one last year to had to show proof that I filed a extension with them.
  • ick
    Touche.

Soon to come, the carbon footprint tax! This really is rediculous. What's the change I could believe in? FairTax!
  • But Have Hope
....we'er getting $13.00 a week back! Tha will help....."Hope we can believe in"

OBama and Congress may not be going up on my payroll tax, but their not getting rid of any other taxes either. In fact, I understand that several are going up. Change we can hope for or hope there is change?
