Remember the hard time the political class gave the automaker honchos when they flew to hearings in Washington on private jets? Yeah. How DARE these calloused and greedy executives fly on private jets while people are losing their homes to foreclosure.

Let's look at another CEO. This one would Barack Obama. He's heading to Europe on Tuesday for the G20 summit. He is taking with him no less than 500 staff members on at least three government aircraft - Air Force One included. There will be several decoy helicopters flown over on Air Force C5s, and one other Air Force transport to carry his limo and the war wagon.

This doesn't include the advanced security teams that have already flown to Europe on private jets.

All well and good ... except for the staff of 500 possibly ... but in light of this and the cost to the American taxpayers, maybe it is time to lighten up on corporate CEOs. These private sector leaders are afraid to schedule a conference for their sales staffs for fear that it might anger the Obama administration and nasty words would fly. Obama has almost single-handedly wrecked the economy of Las Vegas. London, however, will be doing just fine this week.

What others are saying

  • POTUS Visits
I work in an Embassy in Europe and got to witness firsthand what goes into a presidential visit last year with G.W. I was disgusted at the waste of tax payer dollars; for three weeks prior and two after the visit there were 600 of his closest friends running around, over 20 aircraft delivering people, equipment, helo's, vehicles, etc., they rented out an entire five-star hotel, and all for a 25 hour visit. If PrezBo is so tech savvy why doesn't he just twitter all his summits and meetings and save the tax payers billions of dollars on travel expenses alone.
  • barack and his G20 entourage
I wonder if Pruneface Pelosi is going to raise a stink about this. A few weeks ago, she tried to get extra jets for one of her junkets, but was refused.
  • Jets and travel(do as I say not as I do)
The Presbo has a history of do as I say not as I do. Look at his trip last month to Columbus Ohio to talk about the jobs he created. He flew there on AF1 and the other 3 planes that always go with him to talk about the porkulas creating jobs No other head of a company should travel like this but he can and will at a cost of what? More then the 2 yrs pay the gov will pay the state to retain these people. Is this the way we save jobs by flying around spending the tax payers money to sell there socialist plans? Like I said do what we say not as we do!
  • BHO's 500 - will he feed 'em loaves & fishes?
He needs the 500 to carry all the teleprompters he'll be using since he cannot think on his own.
  • the lottery
Imagine you were going to Europe and didn't have to pay shiite. The sky's the limit, bee-otch. You'd be kickin' it with your posse, too. Hell, you'd probably even invite your Uncle Bubbles and his tranny girlfriend.
  • The 500
my question is, what the heck are these 500 folks doing? I don't care which president takes them, what do they need them for? Is this unprecedented? How many people do the others bring? Jeepers, sounds more like a Michael Jackson tour.
  • BO and 500
Who is going to keep these children together? Better send a kindergarten teacher to make sure none are lost and eat their veggies.
  • He's The President!!!
How can you equate the needs of the President, the Leader of the free world, and someone whose security is a top priority of the nation, with CEO’s who made risky decisions and needed Tax payer dollars to keep there businesses afloat?

Why should we be paying extra for those CEOs to get where they want to go faster? I know time is money, but when they came begging for bailouts, it became OUR money, and they need to spend it thriftily. Why can’t they catch red-eye flights to get where they are going on time? They are so called masters or industry, I’m sure whatever meetings they are jetting off to will wait for them to get there.
  • A Teleprompter requires a LOT of support..
...especially when you have to plug it in overseas. I'm sure the extra staff on hand is there to ensure that no teleprompter miscues occur at the G20.
  • Obama entourage going to G20
So our illegitimate President is taking 3 aircraft to transport 500 staff members to the G20 summit.
Why don't they a cruise ship instead?
  • Another campaign promise kept
Presbo lowered taxes for the employees of that company that went out of business. Less income = less income tax. TA-DA!!
  • Car companies are different
I think it is different cause people were mad that CEOs of AUTOMOBILE corporations were taking airplanes. It isnt like there is an ocean between Detroit and DC(there isnt for Neal's fans that havent been educated enough). Not to mention the next time the CEOS met with congress it was very convenient that they all had taken cars that time.
  • Less Expensive Way
Have they ever heard of Net Meeting?
  • Private Jet Company Killers
Yeah, so I have a friend who worked the hangers at a company that sold private planes. That company went out of business this past month. Nobody wanted to take the risk of buying planes when they were being made a target by the Gov't.

Funny, you think you're doing "a good job" by forcing companies not to "waste" money that should be used to stimulate the economy, but in the process... you only kill more jobs and prevent money from being used for real stimulus.

So... wealth envy kills jobs. It couldn't be any more clear than my example.
  • Bailout money makes all the difference.
Has there been a situation where the government has criticized a non-bailout company for using private jets?

From what I know it's only been companies on the taxpayer dole being criticized for use of private jets, and that is at least somewhat justifiable as protecting tax dollars.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
  • The Obama Greenhouse Quotient
Just like Al Gore, Obama has to keep his carbon footprint at XXX BIGFOOT LEVEL to prove his importance. After all, as much as the Prez loves the camera, he still relies on jetting out of D.C. once a week.
  • It would be interesting to know ...
...how many staff members would President Bush have taken on a similar trip? I imagine it is much less than the bureaucratic, spend-happy, punch-drunk, "environmentally-friendly" savior-of-the-world President Obama.
