So let's talk for a minute about the latest gaffes of the Obama administration. The first thing that comes to mind is Obama's treatment of UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Last week, Brown visited the White House for an official state visit. There was no grandiose press conference. There was one planned, to be sure, but it was downgraded to a press avail in the Oval Office. There was also no official state dinner. Then we have the Obama gift gaffe. Prime Minister Brown gave Obama a really remarkable gift, a pen holder carved from the timbers of an old British anti-slavery ship, and first edition of a seven-volume biography of Winston Churchill. Not bad. Not a Bentley, but not bad. So just what did our president give to Prime Minister Brown in return? Are you sitting down? Obama's gift to Brown was a box set of DVDs. Something about 25 great American movies - on a DVD format I understand doesn't work across the pond. Excuse me, but what the hell was that gift all about? That's something I would give a co-worker for Christmas ... one I didn't particularly care all that much about; and Obama makes this a state gift to the leader of our most important ally?

OK ... gifts. Big deal. I know that there are more important things to worry about right now .. like the fact that Iran is launching test missiles and keeping tract of PrezBO's teleprompter .. but this made us look like uncultured trailer trash.

We're not through though. Then there was Hillary's Clinton's gift to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. She tried to bring him a red "reset button" to symbolize an improvement in ties between the US and Russia .. but the Russian word on the button was mistranslated. It actually read "overcharge." Whoops.

But this one has to be my favorite. Hillary visited Brussels last week and spoke to EU leaders. And at the meeting, she claimed that United States democracy was older than Europe's. She said, "I have never understood multiparty democracy ... It is hard enough with two parties to come to any resolution, and I say this very respectfully, because I feel the same way about our own democracy, which has been around a lot longer than European democracy."

Athens? Greece? My God woman? Are you really this dense? Don't answer that. What would the Hildabeast do if you tried to tell her that America is not even supposed to BE a democracy? I truly don't think her intellect could handle that bulletin.

What others are saying

  • Neal, you made a mistake
I cannot stand Obama, but you made a mistake. There was no state dinner for Brown b/c he's not the head of state. He's only the head of government.
  • Obama is a Bust
Not content with the DVD gift gaffe, he also ungraciously returned a bust of Winston Churchill that had been on display in the Oval Office since 9/11.

No more tea and crumpets for you.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/barackobama/4623148/Barack-Obama-sends-bust-of-Winston-Churchill-on-its-way-back-to-Britain.html
  • It only proofs what many knew
The way the white house is being run, reminds me of the Beverly Hillbillies, this is the same way the white house would have been ran if they had moved there.
  • Oldest Democracy?
    Mark Steyn:

"America's sustained continuous democracy is older than Europe's:

    "Central and Eastern Europe were dictatorships 20 years ago;

    "Greece, Spain, and Portugal a little over 30 years ago;

"Italy, France, and Germany a little over 60 years ago.

"Look at the dates on their constitutions: If it's from the Fifties, in European terms that's 'old.'"

Yes, I realize that we are a republic; but operate our government by democratic mechanisms. And before anyone else brings it up, modern Swiss democracy dates to its constitution of 1849.
  • Oh, Lordy.
Did nobody try and remind the newbies when they took over that they're representing the entire country when they do these things?

"I guess we should just be glad it wasn't a velvet painting of a black Jesus."
...Or one of those "Saint Barack" votive candles...
  • Conference
I hate to throw facts in here, but wasn't the press conference cancelled because of weather?
  • Hillary......
Hillary's recent comments as Secretary of State have proven that she should NEVER EVER be allowed near the White House. As bad as Obama is, she has shown that we really dodged a bullet when she wasn't nominated....
  • Of COURSE they gave the PM DVDs...
After this huge monstrosity of a bailout bill, that's all we could afford!
  • Gift gaffe
I wonder if those DVDs were re-gifts.
  • Still an improvement
Obama could greet Gordon Brown in overalls and offer him a gift of a half eaten hamburger and still make us look less like uncultured trailer trash than his predecessor.

While the claim that American democracy is older than European democracy is debatable, Ancient Greek "democracy" is totally irrelevant. It fell apart a very long time ago, has little influence on modern democracy, and wasn't democratic in the modern sense, as well as not being in any way a widespread European phenomenon. Neither Europe nor the United States have unified governments, and obviously Europe has experienced much more comprehensive government change in the last century, so the comparison is difficult.

America is a democracy (as well as a republic and a federation), and it is supposed to be. While the founders may not have intended as such, they also did not intend to have industry and did intend to have slavery.

Clinton's comments still seem kind of dull, though. Multiparty democracy isn't really that complicated; political coalitions give it a lot of similarity to our system.

One nice thing about European politics is that Hillary Clinton would be the right wing, and a lot of her positions would be extreme right wing.
  • I'm surprised.
When you consider how Obama sent Russia a private message which stated somewhere along the lines of "We will drop the missile shield if you help with Iran." it should be expected that he, and his staff, will make "minor" fopaws. However, slighting Britain, groveling to Russia, amusing Europe, and surrendering to the Taliban is the political equivalent to drawing a target on the U.S.A and yelling "That thing's not loaded right?"
We cannot show weakness, not even for a second. We are the strongest nation on the planet and we did not get to where we are on the back of a unicorn and political correctness. We became what we are on the backs of men and women of ALL races whose sweat and blood soaked our lands, the beaches at Normandy, and the black sands at IowoJima, and in the Battle of the bulge. There cannot be a two part America, we can either stand together, or die alone. If President Obama and his cabinet do not understand that then they are fools.
We are the Republic of the United States of America.
  • AMATEUR HOUR
Can you imagine the uproar if a Republican had done this?

I can't help but wonder whether a disgruntled staff member purposely messed up the "reset button" to trip Hillary up or said nothing after she, in her usual charming manner, said she didn't trust them to do it right and did it herself.
  • Amatuer hour
C'mon, give credit to Obama. He is trying to connect with the masses by shopping at Walmart for the visiting heads of states. As for Clinton's message on the button, even Google translator knows that what they wrote was completely wrong
  • Hillary's button gift
Nuclear enabled countries should not be passing out "little red buttons". I saw that gift and could only think of "the Button" to launch...of course that would be consistent with her husbands behavior to give away military/missle technology to the Chinese some years ago...it does fit a pattern.
  • Thomas Jefferson wouldn't be confused, Red.
Ever hear of the Barbary Pirates? How about, "The shores of Tripoli?"

Whether the average American can point out the country attacking us or our allies on a map, is a pertinent consideration to politics, not national defense. Most Americans couldn't point out the Hindu Kush on a map before 9/11(I bet most still couldn't).

Our last period of isolationism ended with Pearl Harbor. Must we learn that lesson again?

What do I need with a passport? It didn't do carter, kerry, hussein, or hillary any good, they are still ignorant fools.
  • Administration Faux Pas
When the Clinton Administration was in office the children were in charge.

When the Bush Administration was in office the adults were in charge.

Now that the Obama Administration is in office the retards are in charge.
  • Multiparty?
If that comment by Hilary-ous wasn't enough to make you realize she wants to put an end to opposition, and run this country like Cuba/USSR/N.Korea, et al, then you are blind.
  • These people are Historically Retarded
The US with the oldest Democracy! Why not, Bama stated on national TV that the US invented the auto, and then there's Al, who invented the Internet.
  • re:david/ obama and slavery connection
Your mistaken David. Obama's ancestory thru his Kenyan father could connect him directly to slavery but on the selling end in Africa, not the serving end.
  • All this after only 6 weeks?
I can't wait for the April G20 summit in London...PAYBACK TIME FOR THE BRITS!!!! This will be ooooooh so fun to watch....
  • Treatment of UK Minister Brown
Not surprising given the arrogance Obama has shown to the Nation since since the election process started two years ago. He needs what so many of Americas "down trodden" need these days. A large dose of humility and a little less humiliation.
  • Classy gift
When deciding on the DVD set for a gift, did anyone consider that PM brown is close to being legally blind? Just a thought.
  • Opps...
Clinton gave the Russians the wrong button, the overcharge button was for us US taxpayers.
  • Low Class
I think I've said it before, low class.
  • Braveheart? Patriot?
    Maybe Last of the Mohicans?

Maybe next time he'll give Brown a copy of The Battle of New Orleans!

I guess we should just be glad it wasn't a velvet painting of a black Jesus.
  • etiquette
I wonder if they fisted each other after exchanging gifts (like Barack and Michelle do to each other).
  • Trash
..."this made us look like uncultured trailer trash"...

Come on Neal, give them a break! If America's leadership is going to be damned, at least they are being damned for who they are.
  • Amateur Hour
Just happens to be the title of my blog:

    http://nymike.blogtownhall.com
  • Amateur Hour
Any care to remind the good Sec o' State that we are a republic, not a democracy?
  • Aww, c'mon yall, didn't you read the London Telegraph?
Hussein was exhausted from his long hours and hard work 'fixing' the economy. These are the smartest people in America, you can't make fun of them.

He's prioritzing the really important things, like flying his entourage and a bill cross-country to Colorodo to sign it, and entertaining really important WH guests like Stevie Wonder and a bunch of 6th graders.

I'm just glad he didn't give PM Brown the commemorative obama plate and coin set with autographed copies of his books(including his mao-knockoff little blue book.

I don't know about this snub, but sending the Churchill bust back was crystal clear. Watch him do the same with all our real allies(hussein's really going to kneecap Columbia) and brown nose our enemies.

Let's hope in hussein's exhaustion he doesn't mistake the "Football," for his laptop.
  • Amateur hour
The heading is exactly correct.Just what you would expect from a team that has no experience in leading or governing anything. The only experienced people in the administration are the wash outs from the Clinton administration and they don't even know how to fill out a tax form.
  • No slavery in Obama's ancestry
"a pen holder carved from the timbers of an old British anti-slavery ship"

So what? Obama is not a descendant of slaves. His mother was a white woman from Kansas and hid father was a black man from Kenya. There is no known record of American slavery in Obama's family.
  • Hillary as Secretary of State
It pains me to say but Hillary is doing OK as Secretary of State.
  • Embarassment
That's what he is - short and simple - an embarrassment. You can be elected to POTUS by whatever clever mechanisms you come up with, but when you have no class, there's no amount of money or "will of the people" to get you up that mountain.
The Obamas are "Noveau Riche" in the political sense.
  • Multiparty democracy
"I have never understood multiparty democracy." That's the scariest statement I've ever heard from a US politician.
  • Good Gawd....he could've at least thrown in a Flat Screen TV and a DVD player so Brown could at least watch the movies.

Personally I think that Obama wants to stick it to the Brits because of the alleged torture that his POLYGAMIST, WIFE BEATING grandfather, HUSSEIN OYANGO OBAMA supposedly endured after being caught as an informant for the Mau Mau Rebellion.
  • Well Aint that Special..
And to think that they thought Bush was the dummy.
  • Other Heads of State
Obama ordered 25 sets of these special DVD's. I am guessing the other heads of state are checking his calendar, to not be the next 24 to have lunch with him.
  • The goofs
The Bush men are definitely known for their share of gaffes (father Bush, Japan, and vomit come to mind) and W. was one hell of a goofball in general.

But come on, they were just being themselves and their gaffes were mostly clumsy accidents.
The latest round of liberal gaffes, however, show condescension, not to mention a loose grasp on the world of which they are supposedly so big a part.

I can't wait to hear what that total fool Biden has done lately.
  • America's isolationism...
Right now the U.S is in a state of isolationism. Many Americans cannot locate Iraq or many middle eastern countries on a map yet their tax dollars are going over there. Same with Israel. Not too surprising though. This is why so many in the world look at Americans as being dumb.In fact if I remember correctly a very large percentage of Americans do not even own a passport. Why would Americans want to continue military campaigns in hundreds of countries they can't even locate? The founders would be confused.
  • Marx Brothers redux
If all the jokesters like Letterman and Conan and Leno and Stewart don't jump all over this, they're missing out. There's going to be lots and lots of ha ha opps with this bunch. Too bad we're picking up the tab. That's the real joke! I wonder if all the Euros will still be falling all over themselves to kiss the Chosen One's behind after the next big summit. My money says the honeymoon is almost over.
  • Idiocracy
Ever seen the movie "Idiocracy" where the President of the U.S. 500 years in the future is a beer-drinking, former pro-wrestling brotha who like to just blow stuff up at monster-truck rallies with his dignitaries and visitors? Looks like we may be there in less than 500 years...
  • Braile edition DVDs?
Don't forget Brown is blind in one eye and losing his sight in the other.
  • UK Snub
Anyone wonder if his Kenyan blood is showing, Kenya was a colony of the UK and I am sure the British are not well loved by his overseas family. However, this was a sever breach of protocol, maybe he was sore that the queen knighted Ted Kennedy and not him.
  • Reset Button or Launch Button?
Let's leave aside the "reset" vs. "overcharge" goof for a moment...

Did anyone at the State Department stop to think what it would look like to have a Russian and an American *pushing a big red button* together? Nuclear launch, perhaps?
  • The Taliban better register at Walmart
The Taliban and other terrorists better get to Walmart and Register their gift list before Obama gets together with them if they hope to get something good and not a pork product of some kind.
  • Obamateur Hour
You forgot to mention that she mispronounced the names of the dignitaries she met with last week also. Remember these libtards telling us that the rest of the world hates us because of Bush?

BTW, just think, our BOZO of a president gave the PM DVDs!!!!! The same prize that the 95th caller to the Steve and Vicky 94.1 FM show gets each morning! That's what he gives to the British PM! Good God.
  • UK Snub deliberate?
Is it possible the UK snub was deliberate? Obama wanting to change the UK/Euro-centric association of the US? When a Brit complained to someone at State, the Statie supposedly said the UK was just one of 190 countries, and there is no reason for the US to treat the UK as anything special. Even though Gordon Brown is a lefty, Obama would rather have a joint press conference and State Dinner with Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro.
  • Amateurs
....And that's probably not the last of 'Americas Biggest Bloopers'. Whaddaya expect....of course they're uncultured trailer trash, just like their constituents. Yes, Hillary really believes this is a democracy...that's what she wants. Rule of man (or woman in her case). I said it before, we're gonna be the laughing stock of the world before it's over.......
  • the smartest woman in the world
With Hillary's comments about America's democracy (actually we're a republic not a democracy) being around longer than Europe's, it makes me wonder if Hillary was government educated.

With Obama's dvd gift and Hillary knowing nothing about the world around her, this really raises my confidence about the "Change we can believe in!!"
    (Yeah right)
  • Gaffes
Can't argue with you, Neal-those were both stupid gaffes. Guess we'd better start impeachment proceedings......
