Who is Glenn Richardson? My home town listeners probably know. He's the Republican Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives. By the end of this year he will have blood on his hands. Sounds rather strong, doesn't it? Well ... actions have consequences. Read on:
Several years ago, when Georgia passed its mandatory seatbelt law, the esteemed legislators in Atlanta decided to exempt pickups and light trucks. The exemption of light trucks like SUVs was later lifted, but pickup drivers can still drive around without buckling up.
Statistics show that fatalities in pickup accidents in Georgia exceed fatalities in other vehicles by 31%. You want an example? On March 15th Jack Sandifer was driving a Dodge pickup near Hawkinsville, Georgia. He lost control in the rain and hit a tree. Sandifer and his grandson died at the scene. Sandifer's wife died later at the hospital. None of them were wearing seatbelts. Georgia law didn't require it.
There is a picture of Jack Sandifer taken just after the accident. He's lying across the hood of his pickup - half in and half out of the car - his body sticking through the windshield. You can see the gash in his neck where the windshield sliced it. He was alive when the picture was taken .. but bled to death very soon after. I thought about posting it .. but out of respect for the Sandifer family I did not.
Georgia is the ONLY state in the nation where pickup trucks are exempted from mandatory seatbelt laws. There is a bill in the Georgia General Assembly this year to lift the exemption. It has already passed the Georgia Senate and there are enough votes in the House to pass it. It doesn't look like the House is going to get to vote on the bill however. I'm told that Speaker Richardson is refusing to allow it to come up for a vote. When asked why, he mutters something about government intrusion into our lives. Who knows what the real reason might be.
You want to talk about government intrusion? How about the government seizing money from me to pay for the medical treatment of idiots who don't fasten seatbelts? How about the expanded Medicaid costs? How about the danger from secondary collisions caused by people who aren't kept behind the wheel when they get into a wreck? Oh .. and how about the millions of Federal highway dollars the State of Georgia loses every year because of this pickup exemption?
And ... what about Jack Sandifer, his wife and his grandson. There's Jack ... lying on the hood of his pickup with his life pouring out of his severed neck.
Don't give me that "You're not a libertarian" crap either. You can drive your car all you want .. 24/7 .. on your own property or on the private property of another person without wearing a seatbelt. Go rent a racetrack and do it. When you elect to drive on public highways you are a party to a contract with every other driver. If that contract, which requires insurance, headlights, brakes and such as well as seatbelts, is too inconvenient for you .. then catch a cab.
How many people will die on Georgia roads during the next year because of one obstinate politician in Atlanta?
Oh ... someone asked me for Richardson's office number. Wait .. I think I have it around here somewhere. It's 404-656-5020. I'm not telling you to call. In fact, I'm asking you NOT to. He wouldn't understand what you're trying to tell him anyway. I just thought you might like to have the number on your rolodex in case you should ever need it.
Do you remember that town hall meeting PrezBO held in the East Room of the White House last week? Now the Washington Post is reporting that perhaps all was not as it seemed at that meeting ... especially insofar as the questioners who were actually there.
The Post is reporting that there were five questioners in the East Room who were fully identified. All of them turned out to be Obama plants. They were there to ask a question designed to allow Obama to deliver the message he wanted to deliver. The Post provides the following information:
Questioner 1 was Sergio Salmeron: Self-description at the White House: "My name is Sergio Salmeron. I want to find out about health care."
It turns out that Salmeron worked with the Obama campaign since early 2008. His blog was "my.barackobama.com. He did volunteer canvassing for the campaign as well as voter registration work. He was also a campaign translator.
Questioner 2 was Tom Sawner: Self-description: "Sir, I'm Tom Sawner. I'm a service-disabled veteran, small-business owner in Arlington, Virginia. My company, Educational Options, works with public schools."
He was more than a disabled veteran. He was also an adviser on Obama's education platform committee.
Questioner 3 was Carlos Del Toro: Self-description: "My name is Carlos Del Toro. I served in the Navy for 26 years, retired four years ago, and started a small business."
Del Toro was also a candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates last year. He endorsed Obama in an op-ed in the Fredricksburg (Virginia) Free Lance-Star.
Questioner number 4 was 4. Linda Bock: "My name is Linda Bock and I'm a registered nurse just in Prince George's County, Maryland -- been there 34 years at a free senior health center. And I'm here with my fellow nurses from SEIU."
Bock campaigned and canvassed for Obama during the election.
Then there was No. 5: 5. Bonnee L. Breese: "Hi, Mr. President. Thank you so very much for having me, a public school teacher from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, here to be with you.
Simply another Obama supporter. A teacher's union member, by the way.
There was another questioner but they only got her first name, "Elle." The White House won't reveal her surname.
So ... every questioner at the town hall ... at least the questions from the people who were there ... were from pre-selected Obama supporters. No big deal, folks .. but let's not forget that Obama likes to stage his press conferences; and apparently his town hall meetings as well.
We've all be watching the drama from Fargo, North Dakota. Floods are bad enough, but when you have to deal with those floods in -11 degree temperatures I would imagine it is almost unbearable.
OK .. now for the insensitive thought. Let's keep some score. Let's see how well the residents of Fargo handle this disaster vs. the residents of New Orleans. The parasite quotient in New Orleans gives a huge lead to the denizens of the frozen north. I'm guessing that three and one-half years from now you will not see many Fargo residents living in motels as guests of the taxpayers.
Do you think this being president thing is easy? Consider just one bothersome little problem President Obama is having to deal with this week while he's (not too deftly) trying to solve our economic woes.
North Korea is said to be preparing a missile launch. This missile is capable of reaching Hawaii. The missile is on the launch pad, and the Gargoyle says he is going to launch the thing before April 8th. North Korea says that the missile is designed to carry a communications satellite. Well, what would you expect? Are they actually going to announce that it is designed to carry a nuclear warhead?
The North Korean launch would be in violation of international law - not that I'm all that high on international law. If we shoot it down it would be a clear signal to Kim Jong Ill that the United States is not a weakened power and that we are going to do what is necessary to neutralize the North Korean threat. On the other hand, if we or one of our allies shots that thing down North Koreas has said that they will consider that to be an act of war. North Korea could retaliate in some way .. perhaps against Seoul.
Then, of course, there is the decision not to do anything. Just let the North Koreans test-fire their missile and, in the process, realize some advances in their missile and weapons delivery technology. Some nations not exactly friendly to us might look at this as a demonstration of America's increasing weakness and our willingness to appease. This would make the entire world a more dangerous place for America.
Easy to criticize, isn't it? Shoot the missile down and make your point, and risk an escalation of the situation with North Korea. Let them play with their new toy and America appears weak. Aren't you glad you don't need to make this call?
The Obama administration, by the way, says that they won't do anything to interfere with the launch.
Not of the White House, but of General Motors? We learn over the weekend that Obama pretty much ordered that Rick Wagoner, the CEO of General Motors, step down .. .and step down Wagoner did. Apparently new bailout money from the taxpayers was dependent on Wagoner's exit. So now we see yet another problem with this level of government interference in the private sector. Now the president seems to have the power to dictate private sector management. Who knows how far this power stretches? I suppose most will see this as no big deal, but I find it rather troublesome. Like what I care matters.
Remember the hard time the political class gave the automaker honchos when they flew to hearings in Washington on private jets? Yeah. How DARE these calloused and greedy executives fly on private jets while people are losing their homes to foreclosure.
Let's look at another CEO. This one would Barack Obama. He's heading to Europe on Tuesday for the G20 summit. He is taking with him no less than 500 staff members on at least three government aircraft - Air Force One included. There will be several decoy helicopters flown over on Air Force C5s, and one other Air Force transport to carry his limo and the war wagon.
This doesn't include the advanced security teams that have already flown to Europe on private jets.
All well and good ... except for the staff of 500 possibly ... but in light of this and the cost to the American taxpayers, maybe it is time to lighten up on corporate CEOs. These private sector leaders are afraid to schedule a conference for their sales staffs for fear that it might anger the Obama administration and nasty words would fly. Obama has almost single-handedly wrecked the economy of Las Vegas. London, however, will be doing just fine this week.
Last week Barack Obama met with top executives of US banks. This was his message to the banks: bonuses are not acceptable.
That's right. Not just "excessive" bonuses or bonuses paid with bailout money. But bonuses. Period. They are unacceptable while other Americans are struggling to make ends meet.
On CBS's "Face the Nation" Obama said that he made sure the bankers knew that big bonuses during a financial crisis is "just not acceptable." He also told the bankers, "Show some restraint. Show that you get that this is a crisis and everybody has to make sacrifices."
Sadly, the American people will applaud this move. They just won't understand that the amazing financial minds that we need to turn these banks and other financial institutions around are simply going to go somewhere else .. perhaps to another country .. where they can sell their services in a free economy.
Perhaps we will find out what these people are capable of when they're working for our overseas competitors where their earnings are unrestrained.
Our Treasury Secretary, tax cheat Tim Geithner wants to make sure that you know that government is going to be the answer to our financial problems. Not the market. Not tax cuts or small business development. Not Wall Street. None of it. Government is the answer.
On ABC's "This Week," Giethner was trying to defend his approach to fixing our economic problems. He said, "The market will not solve this. And the great risk for us is we do too little, not that we do too much." Yup ... forget the market, put hour reliance and faith in government. The same government, by the way, that brought us Social Security.
On "Meet the Press" he also said that people, as a result of the recession, will be "living within their means more, which is helpful." And that when this crisis is over, "people are going to care less about what they make, more about what they do. What they achieve is what they make. And that will help make this country stronger." Oh, I see. We're supposed to be happy with a sense of achievement. Our achievements don't necessarily have to be rewarded by the marketplace. Someone please straighten me out .. but this sounds just a wee bit Marxist to me. What am I missing here? There's a lot of "from each according to their ability" here ....
Chrysler .. $4 billion bailout recipient .. is raising some eyebrows. Why? Because the company is spending an average of $5,600 per vehicle in incentives to get people to buy. And now, Chrysler sales are increasing .. and people are upset because they believe that bailout money is being used to offer larger incentives to buyers.
Apparently Chrysler has always been one to give steep incentives, but those deals have only increased from a year ago. According to the Detroit News, "In February, Chrysler spent an average of $5,608 per vehicle on incentives, according to Edmunds.com. That compares with $3,681 from General Motors Corp.; $3,384 at Ford Motor Co.; $2,572 at Nissan Motor Co.; $1,682 at Toyota Motor Corp.; and $1,249 from Honda Motor Co."
So now, people are questioning the spending levels of Chrysler, asking whether taxpayer money is being used to subsidize incentives that other auto companies that didn't receive a bailout can't offer. In other words, is the government bailout giving Chrysler an edge in the market place.
So ... let's recap. You can't use bailout money to reward extraordinary employee performance, and you can't use bailout money to encourage people to buy your product. Oh ... wait! I get it! The only acceptable thing you can use this bailout money for is building electric cars.
The more government gets involved in our businesses and marketplace, the more screwed up things are going to become. Capitalism is under assault. The left, with full cooperation of the media, has done a wonderful job of convincing the American people that it was capitalism, not government, which failed here. The people are wrong - but not educated to the point that they can see it. A big thanks to the wonderful voters for putting the Democrats - and this Obama guy - in charge.
Did you hear about the United Nation's latest plans on climate change? A UN document distributed to a major environmental assembly envisions, "a huge reordering of the world economy, likely involving trillions of dollars in wealth transfer, millions of job losses and gains, new taxes, industrial relocations, new tariffs and subsidies, and complicated payments for greenhouse gas abatement schemes and carbon taxes -- all under the supervision of the world body."
This shouldn't come as a surprise to you. I've been telling you for years that the purpose of this global warming movement is to redistribute wealth around the world. And who better to be in charge of that task than the United Nations.
Don't listen though. Global warming is real, right? That's why the earth has been cooling for eight years.
The governor of New York has officially decided that the best way to make up for government inadequacies and budget shortfalls is to tax the evil, filthy rich. The plan will increase income taxes for New Yorkers making more than $500,000 a year by 31%. Yes, that's right ... a 31% increase in income taxes on the evil rich in New York. Those making between $250,000 and $500,000 will see their income taxes increase by 14.5%.
The result, I can guarantee, will be to drive away wealth. People will find other ways to get around this. It will be just like California in that taxes will drive away productive members of society and leave the state relying on Mexicans and Hollywood for survival.
The single largest federal tax on tobacco is taking effect this week. Wednesday to be exact. And I couldn't be more thrilled. The cost of cigarettes has apparently already risen in order to offset and drop in profits because the per-pack tax will climb from 39 cents to $1.01. And it's not just cigarettes. Other tobacco products will see tax increases as well.
Just in case you didn't know .. one out of every five adults is ignorant enough to smoke cigarettes. These disgusting, full of self-hatred smokers cost our economy $193 billion a year in medical expenses and lost time at work.
How is Obama's reduction in tax deductions going to affect charitable giving? Dick Morris has more. Obama has no war on terror, but he does have a war on charitable giving.
George Will explains how our executive branch of government suddenly became a legislative body.
The new World Trade Center tower is no longer going to be called the Freedom Tower .. and critics are saying that changing the name is "unpatriotic." Do you think it could possibly have anything to do with the fact that China has rented several floors in the new building?
It turns out that we have Angela Merkel (the German Chancellor) to thank for killing an idea for a "global new deal."
Can you imagine if this happened to George Bush .. or Sarah Palin?
We officially have our first government middle school to be named after Barack Obama. Mark my words .. within four years any city that doesn't have a "Barack Obama" Street, Road, Boulevard or what-have-you will be the target of protests.
