LIMOUSINE LIBERAL DEFINED .. AND ANOTHER TAX CHEAT

We just went through this with Obama's treasury nominee Timothy Geithner .. and now we have yet another Obama appointee who has failed to properly do his taxes: Tom Daschle. At least Daschle will not be the head of the IRS, but he will most likely be our secretary of Health and Human Services.

OK .. here are the details on the latest tax cheat the Obama wants to serve in his administration ... a tax cheat the Democrats are eager to confirm.

First ... Daschle has some rather strong feelings about people who cheat on their taxes. Back in 1998 Obama's choice for HHS Director put a little statement on the Congressional Record. Ready? Here you go: "Make no mistake, tax cheaters cheat us all, and the IRS should enforce our laws to the letter."

Now that we have an idea about Tom Daschle's opinon of tax cheats ... let's look at just how diligent he was about paying his taxes.

When he left the U.S. Senate in 2005 - involuntarily - Daschle went to work as an advisor to an investment firm. By "advisor," of course, we mean "lobbyist." Now ... how many of you get a company car? If you do you will know that you are expected to pay income taxes on the value of your personal use of that car. If you're going to claim some business use you had better have it documented - mile by mile. Back to Daschle. As part of his compensation for his "work" for the investment firm Daschle he had the use of a .. get this .. limousine and a chauffeur! Somehow Daschle forgot to claim this as income on his tax returns for three years. Then along comes Obama to talk about a cabinet-level job with Daschle and suddenly Daschle's knowledge of tax issues becomes more clear. He files an amended tax return claiming the $255,256 value of the limo and driver for three years. He also suddenly "remembers" that he had received about $83,333 in consulting fees in 2007 that somehow didn't make it to his tax return, as well as some phony charitable contributions amounting to another $14,963. He coughs up about $140,167 in back taxes and interest and now everything is supposed to be just hunky dory.

By his own words, Daschle has "cheat(ed) us all." So does our Senate reward him by making him the Director of Health and Human Services? Well, Daschle has yet to be confirmed ... but PresBO has made it clear that all is forgiven and he wants him on board in the Cabinet.

What was all of that we were hearing from Democrats about corrupt Republicans over the past eight years?

What others are saying

  • fairtax
Did any of you citing the Fair Tax ever read the book? One of the examples cited in there was the treatment of a tax payer from Winston-Salem NC who the IRS drove to suicide over a tax issue it turned out he didn't owe. Fair and balanced ????
  • Daschle Quote on Tax Cheats
“Make no mistake, tax cheaters cheat us all, and the IRS should enforce our laws to the letter.”
–Sen. Tom Daschle, Congressional Record, May 7, 1998, p. S4507.
  • Daschle
I'm very disappointed in Tom Daschle. He was our Senator in South Dakota a couple years back. He is supposed to represent our state. If he can tell everybody that people who fail to pay taxes hurt us maybe he should grow a pair, take his own advice, and pay his taxes like the rest of us. In addition to that he should also have to pay the penalty for it. Maybe Obama should reconsider some of his Cabinet choices?
  • Reason for the FAIRTAX!!
This whole thing about Geithner's/Dashle's failure to pay income taxes would be a non-issue if the FAIRTAX was enacted into legislation.
  • You might be a Republican....
....if you're childish/stupid enough to assert that corruption is limited to any single party of government.
  • You might be a Democrat.........
....if you 'accidentally forgot' to pay taxes amounting to more than most people in this country make.
  • liberalism=hypocrisy
    http://burketobristol.blogspot.com/2009/02/hot-house-oval-office.html
  • Isn't paying one's taxes the dp definition of patriotic?
The "Pay THEIR fair share of taxes" party can't even be held to their own miserably low standards.

Not that I'd ever characterize them as "unpatriotic." Treasonous fifth columnists and hypocrites would be more accurate.

Musing, thanks for reminding us yet again the GOP crooks are convicted and booted, dp crooks are protected and promoted.

Mathew, in the future you can save time. Just fill in (R) after the name of any politician that does anything good and their party is left out, and (D) after the name of any politician that does anything wrong. There are few safer bets. It went beyond random almost two decades ago.

Don't think democrat party politicians or msm hacks are going to give up their mansions, jets, or SUVs either, they are the do as I say, not as I do party.
  • Error!
Here's the current AP headline on this matter:

Trying to save nomination, Daschle apologizes for $128K tax error

This is Orwellian. This is like a mugger telling the cops that he mugged the victim unintentionally.
  • Cheaters
It doesn't look good for the president to be circling himself with cheaters. I guess anything is okay for the big wigs.
  • IRS and taxes
Wonder what IRS office receives this, maybe we should send ours there too, seems like every year the IRS finds SOMETHING in our taxes to complain about - and we have to explain it to them, so maybe if we send to a different office, it'll get overlooked! Wishful thinking...
  • At Least Tom is Not a Wall Street Fat Cat
    Which is more unethical:

    a) Working on Wall Street and receiving a performance bonus that is part of you defined compensation package or

    b) Taking a cabinet level position paid by taxpayer while you 'neglected' to pay your tax obligation as prescribed by law.

Now I understand what sort of change I am supposed to believe in.
  • Paying taxes in the US is voluntary, according to Reid
    Yup, on video, no less.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7mRSI8yWwg

I guess that excuses Geithner and Daschle...or any other Democrat to be nominated yet....
  • Why do Democrats want to raise your taxes?
Because they don't pay them themselves!
  • Penalties.
How interesting the Tommy boy did not pay any penalties.
I had to pay $600 in taxes several years ago. I didn't have the $600, so I agreed to pay $50/month plus interest. Dadgummed IRS also charged me PENALTIES of 1 1/2% per month. And this for FOLLOWING the rules!!Daschele and Gietner BOTH should have to pay penalties for NOT following the rules
  • There must be a lack of qualified democrats when,
President Obama just can't seem to find enough qualified democrats that understand their personal taxes.

    Change we can believe in......
  • I wouldn't say that being associated with Democrats is an indicator of being a tax cheat any more than being associated with Republicans is an indicator of molesting little boys and accepting bribes.

Every seems to have forgotten Ted Stevens lately, I wonder why... 7 time felon in the senate? Not news because he's not Liberal.
  • Ted Daschle
I just looked over 60 articles on Blumberg about Ted Daschle and his tax situation. Not once did any of the articles describe him as being a Democrat. A republican in a similar position would be skewered!
  • I wonder
Does this mean I can stop paying my taxes until I am picked up as a Cabinet Member for a Democrat President?
  • Double Standards
Al Capone didn't pay taxes, and he ended up in Alcatraz. Timothy Geithner and Tom Daschle failed to pay taxes on time, and they end up working in the White House. Perhaps given the chance to pay his back taxes, maybe Al Capone could have worked in the Roosevelt administration...
  • Daschle and his taxes
Today we hear that former Sen Tom Daschle 'regrets' not having paid more than $100,000 in back taxes. How about this - when I go through Turbo Tax and figure out how much I owe (Caution: I am NOT the Sec. of the Treasury), how about when I get to the final figure, I simply sign my form, "I regret I will be unable to pay this at this time, unless of course, I am nominated for a Cabinet position." How far do you think that will fly?
  • No worries for tax cheats.....
There just has to be someone who is dealing right now with the IRS over tax improprieties that is grinning ear to ear.
  • Tom Daschle
Lay off Tommy! He said he was sorry!
  • daschle/tax cheat/lobbyist
Daschle is not only a tax cheat. He has also been working as a lobbyist since he lost his bid for relection a few years back. The industry he's been a lobbyist for is involved in the health care industry. Now he's going to head Obama's health care plan? What happened to Obama's promise not to have lobbyist in his cabinet? I guess it's ok if Daschle quits his current job first. These guys are just unbelivable. Hey Obama fans I'm starting a pool on how long will it be before Obama renegs on every promise he made to get elected. Get your bets down soon cause I don't think there's much time left. Change we can belive in, what a load of crap.
  • Why would they want him
Daschle was voted out by the people that he represented. Why would we want him back in Washington?
And by the way maybe Daschle should have called those people on TV that promise to reduce your tax liability.
  • Tax Cheat
I'd say the IRS has enough probable cause to audit all elected officials now.
  • Tax cheats
Kinda odd that the liberal elite all want YOUR money but aren't willing to give it up themselves.
  • Daschle
I guess the argument in favor of Daschle will now be:

    1. He won't be running the iRS?
    2. We overlooked this for Geithner? (i.e precedent)

Please do not include ME in the "WE" who thinks THIS is okay.

    I'm SICK OF THIS.

I celebrated inauguration day by emailing every Republican Senator NOT to support Geithner and to grow some backbone before they start voting for 40 year old Democratic Wish Lists disguised as stimulus packages.

    Go REPUBS! Don't quit NOW!
  • Questionable....
What do you expect from PBO? Look at all the shady characters in his past that were exposed (to some degree) before the election. So why stop now, lets surround ourselves with shady characters in the cabinet. Seems like par for the course for PBO.
  • Daschle
May we should just put up a wall around Washington DC with razor wire on top to keep the crooks there. We could call it the Washington Department of Coruption.
  • Daschle
    He looks like a crook.
And, he is a white guy.
  • Lack of eyebrows
First Geithner, now Daschole. I think a lack of eyebrows is an indicator of a tax cheat. That and being associated with Democrats.

    http://www.cafepress.com/Philosufism/6309300
  • Opportunity for FairTax?
Neil, how many high profile Dems could you get on-board by pointing out that under the FairTax, these scandals couldn't happen?
  • Tax Cheats
If you think about it Obama is really doing a good thing for the country. If all his appointees pay their back taxes with interest and penalties we might just make up the national debt in no time!
  • Daschle
No way dastardly daschle would ever had paid these taxes had Obama not nominated him for a cabinet position.
  • Gov't. of the tax cheats, by the tax cheats, for the...
Best snark I've read on this was (paraphrasing): Obama will obviously soon appoint Wesley Snipes to something important.
  • Fairtax
With all of these Democrats having problems with their taxes, maybe they'll want to rally for the Fairtax:>
  • No honor among thieves, take two.
  • tasis@mail.com
We should just make a whole lot of new cabinet positions, let Obama fill them and we could knock a dent in the national debt when his picks pay their back taxes.
