It was only a matter of time before we got to this point. And it took Northern Trust Corporation to do it. That is the evil corporation that has sent John Kerry on a mission to make sure that he is seen as a watchdog for the taxpayer!

Here's the set up. Northern Trust is a bank based out of Chicago. It received $1.6 billion under the government's $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). According to the bank, it did not seek TARP assistance, but it agreed to participate in the program at the request of the Treasury Department. The TARP funds were essentially forced on Northern Trust. Northern Trust has made it clear in corporate statements that TARP "funds are not allocated to operating expenses, including marketing, advertising, corporate sponsorship or charitable activities."

Back in the fall of 2007, the bank signed a five-year contract to sponsor the Northern Trust Open, which is a PGA tour event. We are talking about a year before TARP even existed, okay folks? On February 19th-22nd .. just last week .. the bank held its second annual golf tournament. Phil Mickelson won, for anyone that cares. The event included parties and concerts and goody bags from Tiffany's. Does it look bad? Yeah. But is that the whole story? Of course not.

Then comes John Kerry, Barney Frank and the rest of the wealth-envy crowd. They are upset with the "extravagant spending practices of U.S. banks" that receive taxpayer money. John Kerry actually pulls out this line, "Americans who play by the rules are losing their jobs and struggling to pay their mortgages ... It's an embarrassment that this legislation is necessary, but some companies clearly need a reality check to get their priorities straight so taxpayer money is used to get their house in order and not to pay for lavish parties."

So what legislation is he talking about? Under John Kerry's legislation, which would go into effect March 1st, a TARP recipient could not "host, sponsor, pay for conferences and events and pay for holiday or entertainment events for the year in which they receive TARP funds." You can seek a waiver from the ... government ... for an event that the TARP recipient believes would be directly related to the operation of business. If you violate this restriction, the TARP recipient would have to reimburse the government taxpayers for the cost of the event and pay a $100,000 fine per violation.

Barney Frank is already calling on Northern Trust to refund the taxpayers for the golf tournament.

What others are saying

  • Northern Trust Meetings & Events
OK, I agree elected officials should not be sunning themselves in the Caribbean at the taxpayer's expense, but there is considerable value in face-to-face meetings. Events, meetings and travel can be strategic cost effective ways to retain and develop employee talent, build engagement, generate ideas, and share knowledge that drives business growth. As a professional meeting planner, I see it every day.

Unfortunately, because a few executives displayed incredibly poor judgment by hosting flashy gatherings while receiving TARP funds, the meeting industry’s reputation has taken a significant hit.

According to the U.S. Travel Association, meetings and events are responsible for 15 percent of all travel spending and generate more than 1 million jobs and nearly $40 billion in tax revenue. Our industry does not deserve to become the sacrificial lamb of this recession.

Face-to-face meetings and idea sharing can help move this country forward. Given a chance, professional meeting planners can help their clients make responsible decisions and host events that generate significant ROI. I hope our government leaders will take this into consideration before passing any legislation that stifles this growth and shuts down a viable industry.
  • John Kerry as Accountability Enforcer?
That's hilarious, this is the guy who married for money. Kerry in this role is comparable to Col. Sanders guarding a chicken coop.

    Too funny for words, really.
  • Let's add this to the Proposed Legislation
If Kerry wants to put that legislation through, fine, but only if it includes "and no lobbying expenses or other political contributions."

If the taxpayer shouldn't be paying for parties, surely they shouldn't be paying for lobbyists either. Though I doubt Barney Frank would go along with this...
  • DPaying back the money means paying twice the amount...
If Barney Frank wants Northern Trust to pay the government back for the golf tournament that they were contractual obligated to participate in and has already happened, doesn't that mean that the bank will basically pay twice for the same event? How does that help the bank or the economy since now the government is just bringing the "we have to get this money or there or collapse" TARP money back into the government. Does Barney Frank ever think anything through?
  • John Kerry Eyes "Extravagance"
As an aside, did Kerry get some plastic surgery done after losing the election? I noticed he no longer looks like a "haunted tree" (I forgot who originally described him thusly).
  • John Kerry..
I think John said it best when he said this:

I’m sick and tired of picking up the newspaper and reading about another idiotic abuse of taxpayer money while our country is on the brink,”

This is true.. but it is GOVERNMENT he should be talking about.. not banks.

HOWEVER.. let this oppressive garbage be a lesson to all private businesses in the country.. NEVER go to the govt for money. The strings that are attached are puppet strings and the wires are unbreakable steel.
  • John Kerry Eyes "Extravagance"
In the realm of unintended consequences this fits perfectly with Obama's order to limit CEO compensation. If your salary is to be restricted along with any "Extravagance", who will cry out to be rescued? Will these CEO's cry out for a hudge salary cut and cessation of all perks? The consequence will be that no one will want free money anymore!
  • Northern Trust
This golf tournament probably created more jobs/work than the stimulus package will.
The disgust of the poor decisions in Washington is only trumped by by the disgust of the hypocrisy in Washington.
These clowns waste countless taxpayer dollars chasing steroid users then cry when a bank honors their contract and hosts an event that brings tons of money into the community.

Northern Trust and Golf tournaments are an easy target because they're enjoyed by the evil rich and CEO's.

I'm sure Liberals have replaced the Boogyman with "CEO". "mommy, daddy, there's a CEO under my bed."
  • Lavish Parties?
Lavish parties? You mean sort of a inaugural ball or a governor's meeting? Couldn't Obama and the governors work out their spending problems without the fancy dinner and entertainment? Why do we have to cut back and government doesn't? Hypocrites.
  • It's called "accountability"....
And it's been long overdue. I doubt you'll get far with this argument, Neal--even with your most fervent followers.

I recall you trying a similar tack when you whined about auto execs having their salaries capped, compared to pro ballplayers and their huge salaries. Even the right-wing posters pointed out that the execs were BEGGING FOR PUBLIC MONEY.

And that's what's going on here, too. If you want a federal bailout, you have to follow some accountability rules to go with it. Call it "strings attached" if you like--but if you don't want restrictions, don't ask for public bailouts.

The era of unaccountable corporate handouts is OVER. Too bad it took so long.
  • John Kerry
Incredible, John K. judging those with influence.

Perhaps John will ask his wife to unload the "flying squirrel" the $10+ million Gulfstream Jet. I'd say the fabric which covers the seats and divan (couch) at $1,600 a square yard is a bit on the pricey side.

    Knuckleheads!
