OK, sure ...sometimes I might go a bit far on the air just to elicit a response. This wasn't one of those times. I'm talking about yesterday, when I was discussing the ramifications of Obama's extremely popular tax increases on the evil, disgusting rich. Sixty-four percent of the businesses, companies, corporations, partnerships ... call them what you will ... that actually hire people in this country are categorized as small businesses. These are businesses that report their incomes on personal tax returns. Personal returns ... not corporate returns. Are you following the numbers here? Sixty-four percent of job providers are small businesses and they employ well over 70% of all people with jobs. What's more these small businesses are creating 80% of all of our economy's new jobs. Now .. the kicker ... hopefully you already know this. These small business owners are the very targets of Obama's tax increases.

Now I've been a small business owner, and I've represented many more as an attorney. I'm telling you that when these business owners experience a reduction in their income as a result of these tax increases they are going to look for a way to cut their expenses. One of the ways many businesses will cut expenses is to cut jobs. They will fire people.

Who to fire? Longevity counts, so does job performance. You'll want to take this opportunity to send smokers to the unemployment lines ... and you might want to look at employees with tattoos. Lord knows nobody else wants to. But let's say it comes down to tiebreaker time. All elements are equal - but someone has to go. Now is the time to teach your employees that actions have consequences. If one of your employees on the bubble voted for Obama, that should make your decision for you. Tell him or her that they made a choice to vote for someone who made it clear that your taxes were going to go up. You're not going to take the hit. It was their decision, not yours, and they take the hit. Here's a box, put your stuff in it and get out. Maybe you can go get a worthy, honorable poor person to hire you.

Again ... actions have consequences. This isn't a liberal position. It isn't a conservative position. It's reality.

  • Copyleft
I figured the point would be lost on you. By all means, go live in a socialist utopia (an oxymoron, of ever there was one). But I'll be damned if I'll let you rob from me to give to someone who hasn't worked for it. You cite Enron et al for fleecing the American public, but what you condone is having the government do the same thing. Competition will drive the unethical corporations out of business... what will stop the government when it chooses to overreach?

Lent Visor--- point well made, sir. Thank you. This world is anything but black and white.
  • Firing Obama voters
I think Neal is pretty black and white with his comment about firing Obama voters. If I was a small business owner I would fire them as well. They would have to live out the consequences of their actions. Maybe next election people will do research on a candidate before they vote for him/her. Everybody knew Obama was going to do this sort of stuff, but people voted for him anyway because they thought he was “cool”. I even think that some white people voted for him because they thought blacks would finally forgive “us” for the stuff we didn’t do over a hundred years ago. This is all a result of our awesome “government” education system. We are all idiots as a whole. America has conditioned us to vote for the President like we vote for contestants on American Idol.
  • right to work
i think some of you are confusing right_to_work with at-will employment. but i get your meaning.
  • troglodyke@comcast.net
//...like Georgia, you can fire anybody for any reason....
Lawsuits never stand up in Right to work states so feel free to have your Obama voting employees kissing concrete and the piece of mind in knowing that we are a Right to Work state and not a complete mess like California.//

If you choose not to hire employees based on who they voted for, that is your business. If you choose to fire them based on it, you will probably get sued, but you may still win.

However, if you get rid of them, you will likely be getting rid of the most intelligent people on your staff, depending. If you want to have a staff of ignorant rednecks who actually thought Sarah Palin would be a good VP, that's your business, too--and as a consumer, I can choose to take my business elsewhere.
  • From a Small Business Owner
My husband own his family's business, and recently had to lay off half his staff, including a woman who babysat him as a child. He pays nearly 50% of his revenue to taxes. We both voted Obama because some things are more important than profit. My favorite book in the 8th grade was Atlas Shrugged but there comes a time to grow up and apply those principals compassionately. Or don't expect any for yourself.Thinking in absolutes is a hallmark of immaturity.
  • obamanomics and what preceded it
i've been a libertarian for almost all of my adult life. i've been a boortz listener and reader for close to 10 years. i'm a good little capitalist, even though i'm not a devoted consumer. but i've done hours and hours of research on our current economic crisis, and i'm fed up with all these "single minded" talking points.

i'm sorry, but whether you like it or not deregulation and unchecked greed contributed strongly to the mess we're in now. i don't ever hear righties and liberts discussing the effect the repeal of glass-steagall had (quite an effect indeed); instead we're treated to the shrill harpings about the community reinvestment act. in fact there are so many factors that contributed to this problem (including significant overspending and overborrowing by we, the people) that it's pointless and foolish to point one finger in one direction. no one has enough fingers on one hand to point at all the necessary targets, nor do they possess the dexterity to aim those fingers in the myriad directions of all those responsible.

happy-fun carefree capitalism failed. jobs were disappearing even before the crisis began, in all kinds of sectors, and side note: you sheep out there who believe outsourcing is great because it leads to lower prices don't understand that jobs are more important than saving a dollar on light bulbs. we need to get the banks going again, but maybe we might try giving some of that bailout money to the smaller banks. it's obvious the big ones couldn't keep from pissing all over the place; let someone else have a shot who might have better aim!

i got so fed up with the extravagant excesses of 1990s and 2000s capitalism that now i'm willing to give obama's ideas a chance. the american dream is not having everything you want; it's having everything you need and the freedom to buy whatever (but not everything) you want. all you poeple crying and moaning over stock libertarian talking points need to re-focus your energies, stop burying the bad while trumpeting the good and start thinking about ways not to let the last eight years happen again.
  • Unintended consecuences
I do not know if those that voted for Obama were aware of the unintended consequences Neal explains, but I am certain that Obama and the other socialists are very aware of the consequences their tax increases will create. More people on welfare and more power to them.
  • Job losses
The interesting thing is, when Copy Left loses his/her job because a) the economic downturn continues and b) employers begin looking for ways to cut costs in the face of increased taxes (which is part of the reason for point a., but that's another story), he/she'll be bitter. And blame it on the greedy business owner, who's 'lining his own pockets' with Copy Left's labor.

Missing the point entirely. As with most people who lead with their heart and not their head.

Simple fact is, you're never going to convince them that they don't have a God-given right to do the bare minimum of work, and get all the benefits they think they should receive. They don't understand the concept of risk & reward, and never will.

Sine you can't get through to them, that's why we have a Constitution that clearly limits the power of the Federal government to interfere in ways that 'rob Peter to pay Paul.'

Unfortunately, that document is seen as passe, lately...
  • tat and taxes
tats: I think what Neil means is not the person with a tattoo on an upper arm or back. i think he speaks more of those with sleeves and other visible tats.

taxes: you would never tell someone they are being fired because they voted for Obama or whomever. Neil's point was if you are the owner and your employees talks about loving obama or voting for them...you take that into consideration. Then you make up the reason whether it is for cause or layoffs due to the economy
  • David Hughes
Your 'Wild Animals in the Zoo' analogy to socialism vs liberty is good stuff sir. If that doesn't put it in perspective for the socialists that read it, then I don't know what will. I think you are right on point and let me add that I believe that the government should leave charity to CHARITIES!! If you are sick, disabled, etc..then a charity organization is where you should go for help, not the federal government. If none of our tax dollars were used to social security/welfare, there would be much more money available to charities to help the people WHO ACTUALLY NEED HELP! All the government had done by being in the charity 'business' is create generation after generation of people on the take. One of my favorite quotes is by Charles Barkley of all people. He says 'Poor people have been voting Democrat for 60 years...and they're still poor.' It's time to wake up before it's too late America!
  • We have better choices
    David Hughes:

Your comment would make sense if our only choice was anarchy or slavery, or if we were animals with no choices. Fortunately, we can have a government that prevents businesses from destroying people's lives while still allowing business to exist and prosper and people to be independent. Trying to live like an animal and assume that everything that happens just has to be how it is is idiotic. People, in a big sense, don't have to have their money stolen, or lose everything they have due to others incompetence, but, yes, that is what will happen without regulation.

And, no, the market is not going to encourage the good and force out the bad. There will always be corruption, and massive giveaways to incompetents at the top, and as long as the company is still profitable they will stay. People complain about government corruption, and justly. But corporations are in many cases much more corrupt.

But more than that, a business's success is based on making money. In theory, that would mean providing the best service at the most competitive price. In reality, that is not even close to always being the case. A health insurance company can collect your money for decades and refuse to give you what is due when you need it, and your ability to fight it is very limited even if it is blatantly illegal. And no, there is not always a better choice in your "free market". Or a business can destroy the environment and leave everyone else to fix the problems. And from a business perspective, that is good. Which doesn't meant that businesses are pure evil, but that we need a government to prevent them from destroying the environment or defrauding customers.

Plus, a government is necessary for a company to exist and make money in a free market. There is no reason that the government should work only to facilitate business and not do anything to ensure a standard of living for actual people.

A more realistic analogy for the Republican position is some kind of sick zoo where they lock everything in a cage for the lions to eat, and protect and take care of the lions. The real best choice would be for the animals to live in the wild but make sure none of them eat each other. Of course, animals can't do that. People can.
  • Taxes
Dream on! Nobody is seeing a tax cut in this political climate. If you don't see your income taxes rise, you'll be paying higher sales, use or sin taxes. You're probably just too dumb to notice.
    Enjoy you servitude.
  • Sorry, David...
I don't base my concept of "freedom" solely on trivia like economics.

If you can't see that deregulation and lack of oversight (i.e., accountability to the public) are bad things in a society, I can't help you much. I guess Enron, WorldCom, Blackwater, the current housing crisis, etc., weren't enough examples of the folly of letting corporations "regulate themselves."

Maybe you have blind faith that corporations will always do what's best for society. I do not.
  • Copy Left...
I was hoping CL would be participating in the thread, and CL did not disappoint. More gloating. Who'd a-thunk it.

My left fist is CL's head. My right hand, open wide, is the point Neal was trying to make. Right hand is passing over left fist...making kind of a swooshing sound.

Best of luck to you. Hope you find a way to enjoy those "middle class tax cuts" after your employer takes Neal's advice. Somehow.
  • Comrade Copyleft
Obviously you majored in poli-sci and not economics. Most of my friends, neighbors, and colleagues are middle class (as am I), and will be hurt tremendously by tax hikes on businesses. The meager $13/week tax credit we may get will do little to rebuild our already damaged 401k and stock portfolios, but let's ignore that and just talk brass tacks. Who do you think is going to get socked in the wallet on consumer goods and services when these soon-to-be" over-regulated, over-taxed business owners have to make up for their loss in profits (most of which are used to support or expand the business)? If you said the "average Joe," middle class American, you get an 'A' in comprehension. You're being fooled into thinking that the government is looking out for you, while they're picking your pocket. You'll feel it, sooner or later.

The argument against "l-f" capitalism is just plain idiotic. Booms and busts SHOULD be allowed to occur. It's the natural order of all things in the universe. Will people get hurt when a company folds, a CEO flees to Brazil with the shareholders' money, or something simply goes awry in the business world? Sure. There will always be ethical business owners and unethical. The market will eventually force the bad out and allow the good to flourish, and some of us will get burnt in the process. How is it in any way fair or natural for us to all be on a level playing field (especially when that puts the federal government in a position to fleece all of its citizenry)? Let me use an analogy that even a 12 year-old can comprehend... it uses the element of "feelings," so liberals should be able to connect. Think of any population of wild animals on the globe--- lions, tigers, bears (oh my). Is it better for these animals to remain in the wild, where they could become some other animal's lunch, or put them in a zoo, where they can be cared for 'round the clock by largely inept zookeepers? If you could ask the animals, I'm sure they'd say they would rather take their chances in the wild. A lot of voters in this country seem to like the idea of being kept in an enclosure, being hand fed by the government while they get fat and lazy, and lose all trace of what is natural... inherent... freedom. You may like the idea of being ensnared and hauled off to a confined government pen to be provided with rations of oats and hay, but the more sane among us would rather take our chances with a free market. Are we going to be jumped by a bigger predator or get a thorn caught in our paws out in the wild someday? Maybe. But it's a hell of a lot better than spending the rest of our lives in captivity. Think about it.
  • Taxes
Increase my taxes and I will fire one or more employees if necessary to cover the losses. The remaining will have to take on more work or risk losing my other jobs I am providing to them. You noticed I said "my jobs" not their jobs. Try me Mr. Obama. When pushed, we business owners will do what is necessary to retain our level of income. For the guy who thinks we only keep the minimum level of employees necessary. Not the way it is dude. My business does about 10 million a year and we have 20 employees. We could do it with 17 or 18 but we would have to work a lot harder. So, before I take a pay cut. I will go back to the old days. Work harder during the day and do my book work and other business activities at night.
  • With the secret ballot
I doubt you'll get far, and if you get rid of the wrong person, it'll definitely backfire.

I'm glad I'm not in a RTW state for once.
  • To: Jubiliation
"By this, I infer that Copyleft repudiates those who pay no taxes but instead live off the enforced largess [sic] of those who actually go out and earn a living! Thank you, Mr. Copyleft - now, BACK TO WORK so you can continue to pay for ALL the freeloaders."

Ahh, you mean the 'freeloaders' like the previous generation who worked to establish the society and economy we enjoy today? Yep, I'm happy to support them.

Or do you mean the "freeloaders" like the nation's disabled and ill, including those forced into bankruptcy by medical problems? Sure, I'm civilized enough that I'm willing to support them.

Or were you referring to "freeloaders" like those on the government payroll? You know, like our police, courts, and military. I'm happy to contribute my tax money to support those "freeloaders" too.

But I thank you for revealing the mean-spirited selfishness that lies at the core of all libertarian so-called "thinking."
  • laissez-faire capitalism vs. boom & bust
Copyleft, We have never had a true Laissez faire economy. Government has always intervened. The reason capitalism has succeeded so well is it works for everyone - IF they work it and do so ethically, morally and legally. That makes it resilient enough to withstand government "help." Government interventions in the economy are the primary causes of boom and bust cycles. Read von Mises and Hayek to learn how that works. For condensed versions read "Economics in One Lesson" by Henry Hazlit or "Whatever Happened to Penny Candy" or the other "Uncle Eric" series by Richard J. Maybury.
  • Lay off the tats
Hate to say this Neil but your way off on tattoos. While persoanlly I don't have any, I do know a lot of Military folks who have them. So by saying anyone who has a tattoo(s) are "low-lifes" you just have insulted a large number men and women who have served r currently serves in our nations various military branches. And for that I do think you owe them a large apology.
  • copyleft
I'm so happy that you can enjoy the death of freemarket capitalism. I thought "Atlas Shugs" was a work of fiction not a glimpse into americas future. You should read it, but if its too tough for your leftist pea brain I think there are still "cliff notes" available. The congressional leadership, who have a record of f*cking up 95% of everything they ever touched going back 100 years, are now going to fix things?
Most of which they caused! Sorry, I have little faith in the republican leadership to fix this mess and none in the democrats who even refuse to admit they share any blame for it.History shows us what needs to be done and if our leaders would study it rather than rewriting it we wouldn't be looking at becoming a third world, socialist nation. Instead the left gives us chants like the mantra "Bush lied and people died".Enjoy it while you can copyleft cause none of the leftist socialist examples around the world are shinning examples of utopia and most show the collapse of "privileges" for all its people. Heres a mantra to try on "Obama lies and America dies". Maybe not as catchy but most "producers" are to busy producing to march and chant like the "consumers" sucking off the taxpaying producers. Oh well, read "Atlas Shrugs" copyleft, you'll love the ending.
  • Obamas Budget Plan
Obamas plan helps the poorest in this country more than it does the middle class, I am OK with that. Hooray for the income earners and damn everybody else? If that is your attitude when you walk into church on Sunday or when you meet your maker on judgement day, I hope you have your gun with you. You may need it to gain entrance because your conscious will be standing at the gates of a far less utopian place swinging the key from it's tail.
  • Knock it off already.
Tattoos do not make you a bad employee or a bad citizen.
I have never understood how someone so intelligent can be so blinded by a personal predjudice against tattoos.

You are on point with most things, but this is your blind spot.
  • Obamas Budget Plan
    To any and all of you middle class americans that believe for one millisecond that the new Presidents middle class tax cut and budget plan is going to help them;
    It won't.
The only people it might help is the poorest in this country via welfare handouts. The president said your taxes would not go up one dime. Half truth. The tax cuts he refers to is not a tax cut. It's a tax CREDIT. Pay attention here. It will be counted as INCOME the following year. This agenda is an attempt (that unfortunately will work)to fleece ALL of the income earners in this country. The higher income earners will get hit the hardest. You will find this to be correct when it happens. And it will happen.
  • mark is an idiot and doesnt really have a business
why were you planning on hiring more employees, mark? increased production, or just for the fun of it. i will assume for increased sales support. ok, lets say u dont hire them,.. then what?
  • Sorry, but I don't agree that the people who benefit the most from living in our society owe it nothing in return.
By this, I infer that Copyleft repudiates those who pay no taxes but instead live off the enforced largess of those who actually go out and earn a living! Thank you, Mr. Copyleft - now, BACK TO WORK so you can continue to pay for ALL the freeloaders.
  • Smoker
    We just shoot them.

Save on all the medical expense down the road....

(except Prezbo. He gets executive immunity)
  • neal spews nonsense AGAIN
AGAIN THE NONSENSE Where is the sense in you and your reasoning? Why would I have employees on my payrole that I did not need in the first place? Higher taxes aren't going to make me lay anyone off. I have enough employees to support my business. No more. No less. To lay off employees means that I wont be able to produce a good or service to provide to my customers. If i want to increase my prices to offset the higher taxes, then I stand the chance of losing that customer to a competitor that will produce the good or service at a price that beats mine. Your reasoning is immature and only supports your selfish me me me attitude. Now if you said that I would have to lay off employees because the demand was not there due to a slower economy well,.. that is an entirely different story, but to say i will cut an expense because of higher taxing under Obama is just plain dumb!
  • To: S.F.
Yes, the Obama budget plan will help me. It includes the largest middle-class tax cuts in history, and I'm middle-class.

More importantly, the economic agenda includes better oversight and regulation, which will better protect the middle class from the wild extremes of laissez-faire capitalism (i.e., the "booms and busts" cycle we've been enduring).

You'll notice my emphasis on the "middle class." That's because, despite Neal's repeated (and heated) protests to the contrary, THAT is the segment that matters most to a healthy economy. Not the rich, or the "achievers" as the right currently likes to call them.

Look at John's argument, for example. He claims that the "evil rich will ony pass their increased taxation off on the rest of the country." By that logic, of course, the rich should never be asked to pay ANY taxes whatsoever. Sorry, but I don't agree that the people who benefit the most from living in our society owe it nothing in return.
  • Taxation of the evil rich
I think most are missing the big picture here. The "evil rich" will only pass their increased taxation off on the rest of the country by raising prices on their services and goods. Its the consumer who will ultimately pay for this experimentation with socialism. Along with it will come rampaging inflation and further losses in the stock market and in their 401k's. Thats what these socialists want anyway right? Dependency on the central government?
  • Really?
So, Copyleft and Stan. I take it that your okay with Obamanomics?? How does this help you??? I'm searching for real answeres not kneejerk drivel that your used to spewing.
  • Small business
Most people I know work for large companies / corporations that can provide affordable health insurance, 401K, room for advancement / transfer, etc. Small businesses are more likely to go out of business, therefore making it hard to plan retirement.
  • FANTASTIC POST! I agree 100%. I don't need to lay off any employees but if and when i hire again, i'm going to put a field asking whom the potential employee voted for and promptly throw all Obama voters in the trash. Thanks Neil. Keep up the great work!
  • That sounds a lot like discrimination based on political beliefs(for you hicks out there that think you know the government the Supreme Court finds that as unconstitutional and illegal). I dont see too many attorneys advising small businesses the possibility of being involved in unfavorable litigation.
  • Ahh, victory is sweet...
To see your pathetic, petty revenge schemes playing out in your frenzied imagination is like a plateful of prime rib, Neal.

The thought that some of the unearned privileges of the privileged class might be--gasp!--TAKEN AWAY has you shrieking in outrage and fear.

Well done, President Obama. A second helping, please.
  • Fire the smokers
Yeah Neal that's real intellegent there, smokers are paying a whopping tobacco tax for their privilege to enjoy the weed, you fire the smokers or ban tobacco totally which is what you really want and see where the tax revenue goes.
Talk about educating the dumb masses...
  • BFOQ
I think it is a bona fide occupational quality to not be a liberal. Fire away!
  • We changed our plans
We had the opportunity to hire 8 people this month, due to the changes made by our "Leader" we will only hire 4. We were also planning on opening a new branch, but have scrapped those plans. Thank you Obama Voters, you have saved us from hiring you. All we have to do is sort resumes on the name; anything with hypens and apostrophes and more than one necessary capital letter per name is a perfect starting point.
  • Hugo's Ghost
He should get rid of Royal. He's a whiny black man with nothing better to do than to look at Obama as Jesus Christ. He falls in the typical 98% of black racists.
  • Lulz
Show me where in the Constitution it says that you can't fire someone based on political beliefs. I challenge you to site it word for word, moron.
  • Right to work states
...like Georgia, you can fire anybody for any reason....
Lawsuits never stand up in Right to work states so feel free to have your Obama voting employees kissing concrete and the piece of mind in knowing that we are a Right to Work state and not a complete mess like California.
  • Yes, fire your Obama voters...
...And get ready to be sued right out of business, as you should be. Politically-motivated retaliation is not tolerated in this free country.

If you fire someone based on who they voted for (which would be the case in this 'tiebreaker' scenario you so carefully thought up to try to avoid blatently violating civil rights), there is more than enough grounds to drag you into court and ream you.

Remember that whole thing about not discriminating based on race, creed, sexual preference or political beliefs? Every time you open your mouth on this you just enforce the idea that conservobots are nothing but bigotted, butthurt losers.
  • If one of your employees on the bubble voted for Obama
If one of your employees on the bubble voted for Obama, he would probably appreciate being fired so he could collect unemployment and Obama Welfare.
  • Hiring.Firing.
If it can be proved that political beliefs was the cause for termination, it is an EEOC suit. You really don't want to go there.
  • Higher taxes directly affects unemployment.
I agree with Neal.. I am a small business owner who employs 30 employees currently. The combination of tax increases and the economic downturn is causing my company to not only review everyone's performance but also scale back our initial plans for hiring more people in 2009. I had originally planned for hiring 11 new positions this year. I don't envision that will be happening anymore. Higher taxes means limiting the growth of my company. Money I would have put to a new employee is now being allocated to the IRS.
  • Neal, if you fired somebody because they chose to vote for Obama I guarantee you they could and almost certainly would come back with a lawyer in tow.
  • voting practices
Even with the "secret" ballots that we cast it will be easy enough to identify those that voted for this socialist policy maker. Just take a walk through the employee parking lot! NRA...they can stay, those little rainbow stickers...good bet on who THEY voted for.
  • Fire the Obamabots
That's a great idea - fire the employees that are responsible for voting for the candidate who promised to raise taxes on their employers. I have one important suggestion, though.

Do NOT tell them that they're being fired because they voted for the American Idol candidate. Do you honestly think those kind of people could accept the idea of their vote having consequences? No. If they're told that they're being fired for voting for Obama, they'll sue. Anybody doubt me on this?
  • These upcoming taxes
Don't forget to add that some of us will not be buying anything expensive, doing upgrades on our houses, or for that matter; trying to earn more.

I see myself leaving the ranks of the employed by 2011 since I will only be working to pay more taxes.

    Fair Tax!
  • First To Go
    "Again ... actions have consequences."

    -----

In my experience with liberals, this is a lesson that they will never learn. After all, government has bailed them out of their bad actions many, many times, so they are averse to the notion that consequences follow their bad actions.

Hey, they got away with it before, didn't they? Why not now, especially with someone in the White House and a Congress made up of knee-jerk liberals who fed them this line of personal irresponsibility over the decades....

No, I don't think there will be that "a-hah" light of epiphany for these folks. They'll just blame the very people who wanted to save their jobs from the get-go:

    The "Rich."

And this is precisely where the liberals want them.

    Scary times, indeed.
