We can expect more stories like this, folks. Our country is becoming so wussified, so afraid of offending someone, that we are willing to sacrifice common sense.

A marching band from Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte, Michigan was selected to play in the inaugural parade in Washington. That's great. Now, the official name of this band from Roosevelt High School is The Wyandotte Marching Chiefs high school band. Well when you turn on the tube to watch the inaugural parade, don't expect to see The Wyandotte Marching Chiefs high school band. They will be marching under a different name, the Roosevelt High School Marching Band. And you can probably guess why they had to change the name ... because the word "chiefs" is offensive to American Indians.

The band will have to sew patches over their logos on their uniform sleeves and they will not be able to carry their Marching Chiefs banner.

The decision actually came from the band's director after he received a letter from a group that opposed the use of American Indian nicknames and logos. He says that he didn't want to bring any negative publicity to the school. Yeah, and if I applied that thought process to my own show .. I would have been out of a job ages ago.

What others are saying

  • chief
Words are important; names are important. I agree that they should change their name permanently. You would not accept the name of "Pennsylvania Popes" or "Franktown Fathers" because it would trivialize and dimunize thier religion. Same thing goes here. If I said you make me feel uncomfortable to call me a certain name,in common sense the offender would say they appreciate being informed and don't do it again. Otherwise, where the so-called civilization?!
  • Double Standards
How is it that only select groups can be the "victim" of racism/prejudice? Why isn't their an outcry about "The Fighting Irish" logo/mascot? Celtics? Highlanders? Phillies? Aztecs? Vikings? Buccaneers? Texans? Canucks? Spartans? Mountaineers? Cowboys?

What's even wrong with "Chiefs"? What's derogatory about it? It's the head of an Indian tribe or the head of anything (Commander in Chief...uh oh). The Indian team name that should be complained about is "Redskins".

I'm sick of this oversensitive BS.
  • PC Parade
I am of Shawnee / Miami descent, and I am a lifelong fan of the Washington Redskins. I don't look at the use of tribal symbols and names as an insult, I see at honoring the spirit and strength of my ancestors.
  • IT'S TO HONOR
It's to honor. When your name is passed down to a namesake, it should be considered an honor. Once again we have people in government over-reacting to American Indians or as some call them Native Americans protest over the way they were treated years ago when none of us were alive. It was a way to gain publicity. They're just saying you should have honored us by leaving us the f*ck alone back then. You see, they want something from the government ... either land, money or special privileges. If I may, when Atlanta calls it's football team the Falcons are they saying that falcons are stupid, ugly, retarded, dishonest or weird? No. They are high soaring majestic birds of prey that actually look pretty cool. It's just some idiot on Obama's staff that is following liberal PC marching orders without thinking twice. It would've actually honored anyone that is or was a Chief. I wonder what Catholic Priest think of the San Diego Padres? So enough of this BS.
  • just wait.....
....until 'being White' becomes a crime.........

Hell, youre already deemed a racist if you wake up in the morning!!.....
  • Chiefs
Doesn't every town in America have a police chief? And what about the athletic teams named for white people, ie, the Celtics, the Fighting Irish, the Cowboys,
  • POTUS =
    Commander in.....WHAT!?
  • A new mascot for those wishing to be inoffensive.
Any school or team wishing to change their mascot so as not to offend, should choose the pansy as a replacement. pansies are pacifist, offend no one, and fit those schools and teams perfectly.

No self-respecting American Indian(migrated from Asia, and are no more native to this land than any of my ancestors from Scotland or Ireland)would admit discomfort, much less hurt feelings or offense. I'm offended such wussies would claim to speak for American Indians. It's pathetic that I've got more pride and respect for the minscule amount of Creek and Cherokee blood in my veins than so many fullbloods.

If you want to see the same people pich a hissy fit for the polar opposite reason, just change the mascot to Cowboys or Rebels. Some people just aren't happy unless they are offended, lets keep them 'happy.'
  • Chiefs
What is wrong with the word Chiefs?? When I think of a Native American Chief I think of a Strong , Wise, Warrior.

It's asinine to compare a word that has a certain amount of prestige to it as tantamount to calling them the "Darkies" or "Spics" which is clearly meant as derogatory.

The Chiefs use their emblems/mascots to show honor and pride in the warrior spirit that USED to be characteristic of Native Americans. I would certainly rather have my people remembered for their spirit, unique painted faces, and feather headdresses of the past, than of the current images of Casino owners at best and drunken trailer trash at the worse.
  • Problem Solved.
I thought a chief was the head of a Scottish clan??? Put them all in kilts and give them all some federal bailout money. There problem solved!
  • Stupid
Is anyone going to protest the Celts or the Vikings?
  • I don't see a problem with this
The band doesn't want to offend anyone, (except, apparently, people who love nothing more than a manufactured political correctness outrage) so they've taken steps to ensure that they don't. This seems to me a nice example of clear thinking.
  • THE PC PARADE
I have a 'B' and an 'O' in my name. I am offended by constantly having to see the word OBama in the news. As someone with a 'B' and an 'O' in his name, I am afraid that the negative context is beginning to scar me emotionally. I need a bailout.
  • Not surprised
Our high school valedictorian ruined the '92 graduation ceremony by ranting on about the racism in our school for having the chief as a mascot. Fortunately the salutatorian redeemed the ceremony with an inspirational and intelligent speech. What a total harpy she must be!
  • Good Decision
I do think in a lot of ways that we need to quit being paranoid about offending people, but look around at school and professional sports logos for a minute. There are so many downright racist caricatures of Native Americans that it is not funny. Why should they have to put up with it?

Think about it, every crappy high school with the name "Indians" or "Redskins" or "Chiefs" presents an absurdly dehumanizing caricature of Native Americans that would not be acceptable for any other ethnic group. If someone were to name a team the "Darkies" the "Spics" or the "Queers," there would be tons of trouble. But making fun of, or mistreating Native Americans in general, has been accepted since the first European ship sailed into North America.
  • Marching Chiefs
If you want to show some support to the school here is their web address:

  • School will march on as the Chiefs!!!
    http://www.freep.com/article/20090109/NEWS06/901090315

Reversal today of this position - good move.
  • What's wrong with "chief"?
I am totally in agreement with CB about the origin of the word.

After all, PEBO is hailed as the first African American president, and "chief" is certainly the title given to the head honcho throughout tribal Africa.

Never before has "Hail to the Chief" been more appropriate.

  • Azalea Trail Maids too..
State NAACP President Edward Vaughn objects to having Mobile's Azalea Trail Maids as Alabama's only group in the upcoming presidential inaugural parade, saying they remind him of slavery days — a characterization that Trail Maids supporters decry.

Vaughn said he thinks that Alabama will be a "laughingstock" at the Jan. 20 inauguration. He made his comments in a front-page Montgomery Advertiser story published Thursday.

Vaughn suggested that the Trail Maids' costumes — hoop dresses with matching bonnets and parasols — reflect the state's slavery past and have no place at the inauguration...

  • Hail to the Head Guy?
OK, Obama, it's time to disavow "Hail to the Chief." Very offensive.
  • Azalea Trail Maids too..
Local NAACP here in Alabam is protesting the involvment of the Azalea Trail Maids (a community service organization in Mobile, AL) because they wear pastel colored antebellum dresses in parades...somehow this is reminiscent of slavery...what? excuse me?...HOW are a bunch of community serving 16-18 year old girls promoting slavery through clothing?
  • There'll be some changes made ...
    Let's see ...

When PEBO becomes POTUS, will he be "Commander in Band"?

Will the Navy accept "Band Petty Officers"?

Will corporations have "Band Executive Officers" and "Band Financial Officers"?

    Sigh!
  • Wyandotte Chiefs
Why not the name "Chiefs". The Wyandottes were an Indian tribe in Michigan many years ago; and still are the Wyandotte Nation in Oklahoma today.
  • Offensive?
I guess I should tell my wife's family (Kiowa Indians, btw) that they should all be offended by the usage of the word Chiefs. Of course that would be news to them, last time we talked about it they enjoyed the sports teams and high schools that used Indian themes as their mascots.
Oh well, I guess I need to straighten out their thinking.
  • In a similar vein, my former elementary school's mascot was the Warrior for decades. Found out recently that they are now the C.C. Wells Wildcats.

Students start "World Languages" in Kindergarten and the only "World Language" offered is Spanish. My 5 year old brother is learning Spanish everyday when government-educated people today cannot even speak English well. But thank God we're not offending any Native Americans with our mascot anymore!
  • Chief is not Indigenous Word
Actually the word Chief is not an american indian word. It is derived from latin meaning "head". It is closely related to the word Chef which is "head of the kitchen". The only way if would be offensive is if they have a logo that shows a dark person wearing a headress or something but the word itself should be neutral.
