This letter has been making its way across the Internet. I don't know if anyone actually wrote this letter to their employees or not. I hope they did ... but it doesn't really matter. My guess is that there is no small amount of businessmen and women out there who are harboring exactly these thoughts right now. Enjoy:

To All My Valued Employees,

There have been some rumblings around the office about the future of this company, and more specifically, your job. As you know, the economy has changed for the worse and presents many challenges. However, the good news is this: The economy doesn't pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is the changing political landscape in this country.

However, let me tell you some little tidbits of fact which might help you decide what is in your best interests.

First, while it is easy to spew rhetoric that casts employers against employees, you have to understand that for every business owner there is a back story. This back story is often neglected and overshadowed by what you see and hear. Sure, you see me park my Mercedes outside. You've seen my big home at last years Christmas party. I'm sure; all these flashy icons of luxury conjure up some idealized thoughts about my life.

However, what you don't see is the back story.

I started this company 28 years ago. At that time, I lived in a 300 square foot studio apartment for 3 years. My entire living apartment was converted into an office so I could put forth 100% effort into building a company, which by the way, would eventually employ you.

My diet consisted of Ramen Pride noodles because every dollar I spent went back into this company. I drove a rusty Toyota Corolla with a defective transmission. I didn't have time to date. Often times, I stayed home on weekends, while my friends went out drinking and partying. In fact, I was married to my business -- hard work, discipline, and sacrifice.

Meanwhile, my friends got jobs. They worked 40 hours a week and made a modest $50K a year and spent every dime they earned. They drove flashy cars and lived in expensive homes and wore fancy designer clothes. Instead of hitting the Nordstrom's for the latest hot fashion item, I was trolling through the Goodwill store extracting any clothing item that didn't look like it was birthed in the 70's. My friends refinanced their mortgages and lived a life of luxury. I, however, did not. I put my time, my money, and my life into a business with a vision that eventually, some day, I too, will be able to afford these luxuries my friends supposedly had.

So, while you physically arrive at the office at 9am, mentally check in at about noon, and then leave at 5pm, I don't. There is no "off" button for me. When you leave the office, you are done and you have a weekend all to yourself. I unfortunately do not have the freedom. I eat, and breathe this company every minute of the day. There is no rest. There is no weekend. There is no happy hour. Every day this business is attached to my hip like a 1 year old special-needs child. You, of course, only see the fruits of that garden -- the nice house, the Mercedes, the vacations... You never realize the back story and the sacrifices I've made.

Now, the economy is falling apart and I, the guy that made all the right decisions and saved his money, have to bail-out all the people who didn't. The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled to the same luxuries that I earned and sacrificed a decade of my life for.

Yes, business ownership has is benefits but the price I've paid is steep and not without wounds.

Unfortunately, the cost of running this business, and employing you, is starting to eclipse the threshold of marginal benefit and let me tell you why:

I am being taxed to death and the government thinks I don't pay enough. I have state taxes. Federal taxes. Property taxes. Sales and use taxes. Payroll taxes. Workers compensation taxes. Unemployment taxes. Taxes on taxes. I have to hire a tax man to manage all these taxes and then guess what? I have to pay taxes for employing him. Government mandates and regulations and all the accounting that goes with it, now occupy most of my time. On Oct 15th, I wrote a check to the US Treasury for $288,000 for quarterly taxes. You know what my "stimulus" check was? Zero. Nada. Zilch.

The question I have is this: Who is stimulating the economy? Me, the guy who has provided 14 people good paying jobs and serves over 2,200,000 people per year with a flourishing business? Or, the single mother sitting at home pregnant with her fourth child waiting for her next welfare check? Obviously, government feels the latter is the economic stimulus of this country.

The fact is, if I deducted (Read: Stole) 50% of your paycheck you'd quit and you wouldn't work here. I mean, why should you? That's nuts. Who wants to get rewarded only 50% of their hard work? Well, I agree which is why your job is in jeopardy.

Here is what many of you don't understand ... to stimulate the economy you need to stimulate what runs the economy. Had suddenly government mandated to me that I didn't need to pay taxes, guess what? Instead of depositing that $288,000 into the Washington black-hole, I would have spent it, hired more employees, and generated substantial economic growth. My employees would have enjoyed the wealth of that tax cut in the form of promotions and better salaries. But you can forget it now.

When you have a comatose man on the verge of death, you don't defibrillate and shock his thumb thinking that will bring him back to life, do you? Or, do you defibrillate his heart? Business is at the heart of America and always has been. To restart it, you must stimulate it, not kill it. Suddenly, the power brokers in Washington believe the poor of America are the essential drivers of the American economic engine. Nothing could be further from the truth and this is the type of change you can keep.

So where am I going with all this?

It's quite simple.

If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, my reaction will be swift and simple. I fire you. I fire your co-workers. You can then plead with the government to pay for your mortgage, your SUV, and your child's future. Frankly, it isn't my problem any more.

Then, I will close this company down, move to another country, and retire. You see, I'm done. I'm done with a country that penalizes the productive and gives to the unproductive. My motivation to work and to provide jobs will be destroyed, and with it, will be my citizenship.

If you lose your job, it won't be at the hands of the economy; it will be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept through this country, steamrolled the constitution, and will have changed its landscape forever. If that happens, you can find me sitting on a beach, retired, and with no employees to worry about....

Signed,

Your boss

What others are saying

  • As an employer
I can tell you that their are many people who never choose to even hire employees. This is for a few reasons. one they are a pain. They are a risk unless you really don't care about the quality of their work or firing them. The caring employer feels very much like the employees are distant family members. The point is that as the government limits how much direct control one has over what he earns than that person is a lot less likely to pursue growth in their respective business.

And to the fellow below who said the self made man is a myth what planet is he living on. First its all over the place. Visit any Engineering school int he country. People from all over the world making it happen. Second regardless of your economic background you have to do the work. You can have all the advantages in the world but if you don't put forth any effort it won't happen. Buffet has always been an oddity. Note that most of his money has been made investing in MONOPOLIES and Geico (his best investment) Buffet's point that those who make all their money through dividends pay a lower tax rate is true. That's easy to fix. You don't need socialism to fix that. His point regarding his benefiting genetically is laughable. The man is far from a genius. Environment help tremendously especially for males who are more self destructive.

If we are going to set policy and laws based on the idea that we how much responsibility we are expected to take on depends on the circumstances of our birth. Sad future indeed.

I think the education system is a great equalizer are at least a serious help. However our education system can't even convince the kids to take advantage of it. Socializm....lol
  • Amen
The letter couldn't be more appropriate. It won't be very long before America wakes up to what they've elected and discovers the new direction for our beloved country. Which is rapidly moving towards a socialistic/communistic dissaster vs. the vibrant democratic capitalistic society our fore fathers designed. Government can not run business...it doesn't work. They can barely run the government. Let the people help themselves, and we'll see growth like never before.
  • I'm drinking this kool-aid
...because I'm feeling the pain. The negative responses to this letter are from *employees* who don't know jack about business... and are active subscribers to the new agenda.

I care about my employees and the biggest heartbreak is the thought of letting them go, especially ones who've been here from the beginning. Worse case, I have to let everyone go. I can sit back and live on the residual income if I had to, but my fight now is to keep my employees who I value a LOT. These ungrateful remarks are the epitamy of the air today and just what will collapse everything our fathers fought for. Yeah! Let's party till we drop and mortgage our kids futures! Rock-on!

p.s. - And before your snide remoarks, I'm still driving a rusty ole' Dakota that passed it's last e-check.
  • ...did you miss the point?
I just wanted to say to those individuals who say the hypothetical business owner is "whining" etc: The employer here is complaining about taxation. He (or she) is not crying over a business opportunity that failed. Those of you who say "oh he knew what he was getting into when he started the business" are missing the point entirely. If the business was going to fail because of poor management, I could see where you are coming from. But the issue here has to do with the government's taxation of the business. Although he states that he doesn't like/agree with the taxes that are already levied on him, he pays them willingly and works to maintain his business. Don't you think he would have closed his company years ago if he truly didn't want to pay the taxes? An increase in these taxes is what will cause the employer to close up shop; he'll no longer choose to participate as a business owner in the USA.

And for all you who are using this as a forum to blast your employers for their "unfair" treatment of you: I'm sorry you hate your job. If you don't believe in capitalism, why are you working in the first place? I am not a business owner. I understand why I don't get huge pay raises or bonuses. I WANT my company to make a profit. I WANT my company to be strong. If my company stays strong, then I can continue to support my family while doing a job I love. So I only got $100 bonus for xmas. If getting that means I can stay with this company for 10 years, then its worth it to me.
  • Same rhetoric
That's such an oversimplification of the problem. I'd love to meet this fictitious business owner. There is way too much myth about the American "self-made man" (e.g. Joe the Plumber) that is not based in reality. Of course there are problems with the stimulus and there are always winners and losers and unintended consequences with any government spending, but that's no reason to inject fear into the process. There were plenty of people against the New Deal back in the 1930's and their doomsday rhetoric was surprisingly similar to this letter.

It's amazing that Mr. Capitalist, Warren Buffett, believes the complete opposite of the letter. He's a big proponent of the "ovarian lottery" concept; that he benefited genetically and socially because of the circumstances that he was born into and acknowledges that he couldn't have become super rich without those advantages.

    ok done!
  • Disappointing intro
Seems that the editor slipped when he or she wrote: "I don't know if anyone actually wrote this letter to their employees." "Anyone" is singular, demanding a singular pronoun, viz., he or she, not their. Perhaps we should introduce "hesheit" and its variants to the lexicon to insure that grammar is not also a victim of PC.
  • not real but good
Doubtful this is real. But the point is made. Unfortunatly everyone is too busy watching american idol to care. Oh well, lets all enjoy america while it still exists because free america wont be around for much longer with the idiots running the show.
  • Is this letter a Joke?
This letter made me cry. I had forgotten that there are still idiots among us.
  • He know's what buttons to push
This person has all the right angles.Just plucking at our heart strings. I am not doubting the authenticity of the letter. The goal is obviously to get your attention and a emoitional reaction. He must be an English major writing a paper on how you will rspond to a letter of this content. I liked reading it.
  • To all the morons
Especially to Josh @ 01/21/09 05:52:56 PM: for many of you it can appear to be noble, and easy, to state that the "rich" need to give "more" for the greater good, but as we all know the sentiment usually comes out of the mouths of those who are the least charitable, and thus becomes a trendy talking point. There are many who have to sacrifice nothing, as they don't pay taxes or give to others at all, so isn't it kind of backwards to ask some to give a lot, and others to gain more, when they give nothing today?
My husband and I live in gorgeous home - one that is about 1/3 a cost we can actually afford, because we choose to save 25% of his net paycheck each month so we will not have to rely on social security (aka the GOV'T) or anyone else when we retire. While our friends drive around in new $45k cars and have $600 60 month car payments each month we drive 11 year old Honda Civics (great cars BTW!) and have a separate savings account we allocate funds into each month so when we need a new car we can actually BUY it (I am 36 and am on my second car...and I have owned one since I was 18). While people we know rack up credit card debt to buy things they cannot afford and do not need, like flat screen TVs (unless you're charging it and paying it off 100% the next month you cannot afford it, sorry) we're out buying 30 year term 1.5 million dollar life insurance policies...JUST in case we decide so start a family.
When people we know complain they cannot afford to save or give to charity and then go out to happy hours and rack up $50 in margarita bills we are giving are disposable income to charity BEFORE we buy "luxury" items, like clothing and a air purifier for our room because we have allergies...
Josh, and all the others just like you: GROW UP, enough with the entitlement and wealth envy! It is very unbecoming. My husband and I give enough, and ask for nothing in return from people with your mentality, except to get off you butt and start to take care of yourself!!!
  • Not a true entrepreneurial mindset
I strongly dislike this letter as I grew in the household of a small business owner, and in no way does this represent the thought process of an employer with 14 FTEs. Not only is it condescending, but it strays from the mindset of a true entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs understand that hardships will ensue daily, and they work to overcome these hurdles. With every new hurdle comes a new strategy to surpass the hurdle. I realize this is an essay and lesson on the state of the economy and the effect on business owners and the middle-upper class, but let's not make it a shot at small business owners. In reality, small business owners are not whiners or pompous elitists, but instead are problem solvers who will work their hardest to overcome even the the most difficult obstacles.

And let's not turn this into a left versus right argument as there was bipartisan approval of the tarp fund; the reality is that the small business owners could make better use of the bailout funds, but instead the money will be used on companies like the Big Three, which will serve to temporarily pail water out of the Titanic.
  • quite a letter
I'll get behind this letter when I work for someone that actually does reinvest into the company. When I work for someone that actually will give a well deserved pay raise when I ask for it. When I work for someone who won't let my supervisor spend literally hours everyday looking at porn on the internet when we have tons worth of drawings that need to be downloaded and processed, tons worth of material that needs to be purchased, tons worth of cut-lists that need cutting applied. When I say tons I mean it literally, in the steel business it's all about tonnage. I'll get behind a letter like this when I work for someone that won't allow my supervisor to spread vicious rumors about me. When I work for someone that won't allow my supervisor to ride the clock and commit time card fraud on a weekly basis and then turn around and scrutinize the hours I write on my time card. Yeah, I hope my former employer does get taxed into oblivion. And all hundred or so of my former coworkers can experience what I'm going through in trying to find a job. They had their opportunity to stand up for what's right and say something on my behalf and they did nothing. So if they lose their jobs then boo-hoo for them.
  • Former Employee
What a joke of a letter you've written here! Okay, your big savior, obama, is going to give you former "employees" the company? And then what? When you don't actually start working until noon, what are you "former employees" going to do then? Who is going to do the piled up work that needs to be done at six a.m.? You're sick and can't make it? Who then will do your part? Uh oh, no profit this week because you "former employees" had an unexpected overhead cost....is obama going to "bail" your company out too? The bottom line is that you were and are "former employees" for a reason, and that being that you aren't employer material, or else you wouldn't be "former employees ! Grow up and quit waiting for someone else to save you! Me thinketh alot of folks are going to be greatly disappointed when you discover that still, even with "change" opportunity isn't going to be handed to you! You're still going to be an employee, and those with the drive will be employers. Get over it and get to work!
  • Atlas Shrugged
Wow, this guy deserves a medal. Taking the 1200 pages of Atlas Shrugged and shrinking it down to a five minute read (while still retaining its essence) is very impressive. Anyone who likes this and hasn't read Atlas Shrugged, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. You'll thank me later.
  • The first of many to go.....
    Sincerely,

    John Galt
  • FairTax Needed !
We need the FairTax passed now but with a Democratic President and both houses of government in Democratic control it will never happen.
  • Hey former hardworking loyal employee
I hope everything works out for you, given your total ignorance concerning how companies must operate. For example, there are laws regarding price fixing, collusion, monopolies, etc. Oh yes, your collectivist idea of how we employees are going run the company now that we own it: It didn't work for the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock in 1620, and it hasn't worked anywhere since then. Why should anyone work any harder than the biggest goof-off, when everyone shares equally in the profits? By the way, who is going to manage the company? Are you going to stop work and take a vote every time there is a decision to be made? And I love the idea of a union! You can collective bargain amongst yourselves. Just for your information, I have worked on both sides all my life. I worked my way through college washing dishes. I worked a 60 hour week for the same employer for 30 years after graduation (no overtime either, and had to work lots of holidays as well.) I finally invested some of my life savings in a small business. You don't know pain until you sign the bank loan with your house as collateral. If I fail my family is out on the street. 60 hour weeks turned into 80-100 hour weeks, especially when employees called in sick, or just plain didn't show up when they were scheduled. The good employees were given regular raises and bonuses and stayed with me the entire 15 years I owned the business. I sold it last summer, as I foresaw a Democrat win in the election, and forgive me, I didn't want to give half of what I worked for all my life to the government! While I am not "rich", I am comfortably retired, and don't owe anybody in the world a nickel. I know that makes me evil in your eyes; but I hope you remember this down the road when all you have to rely on is your Social Security check, plus whatever else your benevolent government decides to dole out to you.
  • on the other hand....
You give the $288,000/quarter to his 14 employees (who probably are, by Barack Obama's standards, "middle class", ~$50k/yr workers) and they each get $20k. They go buy a car, an LCD TV, etc, etc, and THAT stimulates the economy. The economy can grow with either method, trickle down or bottom up. The problem is that the rich all too often are greedy and, instead of using doing things to help the little guy, they use it to grow their businesses and pad their wallets. Just look at all these banks and what they're doing with the bailout money they're getting. They're not refinancing mortgages, they're buying up other failed banks and getting their golden parachutes in order for the next time it all comes crashing down! Unbelievable!!!
  • A letter for the ages
Isn't it funny and very telling at the same time to watch the liberals' reaction to this. Whether the letter is real or just a "statement" is irrelevant, but it's so accurate and damning of the liberal thought process that they go into some sort of weird overload that pushes their collective tiny mind to the brink. I like to watch.
  • Atlas Shrugged
Good lord, it's like Atlas Shrugged, come to life! I wish I knew who had written this.
  • Sad True and Happening NOW!!!!
I know of 2 who have planned to do this almost to the letter. Everything except for the for foreign country and beach. They have moved what wealth they have to prepare for the worst. They haven’t given up they have essentially decided no matter how hard they work more and more and more will be taken from them. I don’t blame them one bit for doing it.
  • The end of prosperity......
This letter is the absolute truth of the idiocy of the far left thinking they can stimulate our economy with more spending! They keep printing the dollars like we have something to back it up......deflation of our economy and inflation of the dollar....making it hyperinflation!

Who cares anyways? Heil Obama! Socialism is HERE TO STAY!!!!!
  • Truth...
This letter is full of reality. As an employee at a family run law firm, I can tell you that the principles/owners have been busting their behinds for decades building their business.
The backbone of the American economy isn't the little guy who lacks education, drive, and motivation - it's the small business owner, the guy who sacrifices in the short term for the long term benefits.
  • sacrifices: to all the detractors
Admitted, this is an essay. It is not real. The message is true, though.
I came home less than a week ago to find my front door kicked in and many of my possessions missing. They are nice things that I had accumulated with money that I have earned honestly. Anyone want to bet the thieves were industrious, hardworking Americans just trying to get by, be they blue collar or white collar, employees or business owners? I'll take any of those bets.
My back story is working up to 3 jobs at a time to pay my own way through 6 years of college. I've had my own sacrifices, not unlike those described in the letter, that I cherish, because they have shaped the person I am. I revile the thought of someone taking the physical measures of what I have sacrificed for and earned, among other reasons because those things have no meaning to that person. The phony letter resonates with me for this reason alone, though it is obviously not something that has been distributed by an employer to his or her hires.
See and appreciate this letter for what it really is- a statement. Congratulations on your critical reading skills, and seeing the obvious for what it is: simply a statement.
  • Interested in Selling Your Business to Me?..
    Hey Former Boss,

Sorry you feel it necessary to fold up shop and move to another country. We have several loyal customers who still need the widgets we've sold for years.
Since I was putting in long hours and sacrificing my personal life to grow your business and only received enough money to pay taxes and survive with the bare necessities, maybe you would be willing to sell your business to us, your former employees.
WE never came close to making $250,000 a year and since their is still demand for widgets, hey, we're willing to fill the void.
WE we're thinking about hiring back some of the harder working employees and spreading some of the wealth around in order to "buy" their loyalty.
Many were complaining about being laid-off several times in the past years because human labor has become an expendable commodity. WE figured if WE treated employees better WE won't have to worry about the cost of hiring and training anymore. WE realize that not everyone wants to be a multi-millionaire CEO but rather a hard working loyal employee that can provide for their family. WE really don't think our capitalist system is designed such that EVERYONE can be a multi-millionaire CEO especially when you have to crap all over people to get there.
Also, capitalism doesn't seem to work as well when you have 5 and 6 company monopoly such as we have in , auto, telecommunications, oil and other major industries. It seems to be an insider's game where they can collude to keep prices up and competition at bay by buying off political favor through campaign contributions and under the table kickbacks i.e. a special board positions with hefty salaries for their loved one. WE guess that's why we don't allow monopolies and having a 5 or 6 company monopoly is the next best thing.

Now we realize, we would have to come-up with some money to buy the business so maybe if several of the former employees pooled our money and credit together, Obama will make it happen.
Please send us a postcard from time to time and drop by sometime to watch how your former loyal hard-working employees continue to fill a need to keep our economy rolling. Notice how we are very happy to be making more than what you were paying us and our new CEO team isn't the least concerned about a Union while quality is way up because every employee shares in the profit of our business. We did let some slacker employees go, but it was a group vote.

    Tudaloo,

    Former Hard-working Loyal Employee
  • Seminar Posters
Either there are seminar posters everywhere, or half this country Does think they are entitled to something.
  • addendum to letter
Now, not to be totally negative folks, let me prais those employees who themselves came in at 5am. Then stayed till 6pm, had spouses pick up kids from daycare, because we had orders to fill to keep this company running. There were only a few. You sometimes took a pay cut when times where tough over the last 15 years. But you stood by me. When I needed you here on the weekends, you came in. When I had to cut your hours, you didn't complain, but asked how can we make this business go further. Well, it did. It became a great and established company thanks to a few hard working employees, who put in as much time as me. So, here is your $20 gift card to Publix for Thanksgiving, and a $100 Christmas bonus. It's the same amount for everyone. Thanks again for your help.

ABOVE IS THE ACTUAL TRUTH OF THE MATTER. NOT THAT GARBAGE PRINTED ABOVE.
  • Very close to reality
Almost any entrepreneur will have the same same story. This is very close to my experience starting and running a small business. You sleep, eat and drink business. It is never very far away from your thoughts and you have only brief moments when you can really relax. For 8 years we sacrificed and risked everything we had to get our business going. Fortunately for me I have great employees and would never diss them but think about this. Once we reached a level of moderate success the taxes started to kick in. When Obama says he wants to raise taxes on the wealthy he is talking about earnings not real wealth. It is almost impossible to get wealthy on $300K per year because taxes take a huge bite and your life style changes. Real wealth is made when you cash-in, if you can. If Obama really wanted to tax the wealthy he would do it through a wealth tax and not income tax. He knows it but it sounds better to the average guy to say "we are going to raise the income taxes on the wealthy". For those of you who think government is the solution to all our problems good luck with that but remember be careful for what you wish.
  • I know employers who would write this
There was a man in my town who started a small company that grew into a large employer in our area and this was his attitude. He paid his employees very well and working conditions were excellent. Although there were similar companies in the area that produced the same product and were the same size, his company was considered to be "the one to work for". He looked after and cared for his employees. When unions came to town and tried to organize in this industry, he told his employees that they were welcome to join a union; but if they did, he would close the company. He did not need any more money. He just died last year. His company is the only one in the area that has not gone through involuntary "downsizing" over the last 12 years.
  • Grateful employer? HA!
I learned long ago that a job is a job! A company is NOT a family (no matter what they say during Christmas parties) and your boss is NOT your father.
The company will fire you when it is advantageous to do it or if they can't help it, and not before. You should do the same! Work hard at your current job until you get a better offer.
No smart worker will care if the boss tells him/her that you check in at noon. You know the boss knows it is not true in your case, so who cares??? A caring employer? What a joke! The only thing they care (and as well they should) is to get the maximum you can offer while paying you the minimum you will accept.
Much more to say, but I don't want to be longer than the letter.
  • Quite a Letter
While I agree with the sentiments expressed in the letter, I am digusted by the pathetic whining of the (hypothetcal?) business owner. He chose to start a business and knew what he was getting into when he did so. Yeah, the government is intrusive and employees can be a pain, but you know what? We don't want to hear it! So shut your whiny mouth, suck it up and deal with it. I find it interesting that Neal Boortz, the man who is constantly decrying the wussification of America, finds this letter praise-worthy.
  • Nice!
definitely not real, but well worth reading. Makes me want to print this and randomly post this in the break room for my employees to read. Thanks for posting this!
  • My Eyes Teared Up In Gratitude
Of all employers I've ever worked for. This letter is awesome! If only everyone could see the beauty of sacrificing in order to "have." Thank you my fellow business owners, both large and small. I don't blame any of you for packing up and leaving this country of ungratefuls. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving us the chance to prosper, whether or not we did or didn't, according to our personal decisions. And thank you Boortz for sharing this great letter with your listeners and viewers.
  • Letter
Ed F., you're missing the point.

The authenticity of this letter lies not in whether it was written by an actual person, but in how it speaks to the general attitude of the government towards the taxpayers.

The Messiah would love your response because it presupposes that the "working class" is the 9-5 employee who sacrifices NOTHING, and the real bad guy is the business owner.

Ungrateful? Who started the company? Ran it? Made it grow? Gave whatever it took to make it happen? In short, who does an employer have to be grateful to... other than those who give him the freedom to push as far and as hard as he possibly can?

This letter is a spot-on commentary of the mindset of the modern successful business owner, and to the utter fallacy of the welfare state that is todays government.
  • Letter to employees
    Atlas is shrugging...
  • Really?
If a boss actually read something like this to all his employees, they would be insulted by the accusations of dishonesty and dismayed by the pathetic whining.

All that would be left are the looters that do show up at 9 and don't mentally check in until noon.
  • How painful the truth!
I'm an employee working toward being an employer and tomorrow scares me!
  • He should have signed the letter as "Atlas".
  • Wow.
    Looks like Atlas Shrugged.

Good job. In more ways than one.
  • Atlas Shrugging?
    Who is John Galt?
  • Right on target
As a small business owner in the real estate market, I undestand what this person is talking about. Once I tried to explain it to somebody I hired that she was costing me over $650.00 per week and she could not undestand when her paycheck only showed $439.00 she tought that $439.00 was all I had to pay for her to work for me.
  • Letter is probably inauthentic
    This letter is probably inauthentic.

    1. It is too general. It has some alleged specifics (numbers of employees, etc.), but there is no boss name and no business name in the letter. Do we really think a boss would sign a letter that makes no reference to the business by name or even his/her own name?

    2. The Worker's Comp reference is to taxes. Most Worker's Comp payments are premiums for insurance policies (some states may require payments to state-funded programs, and those might be called "taxes").

Since most real employers know the difference between an insurance premium and a tax (and call it that), this is probably written by an essayist and not a true employer.

    3. Who would work for this employer? He disses the employees to their face (you punch in at 9 and mentally check in at noon!). He threatens their job (threatening to shut down the place, as if they could do anything about his tax situation).

An employer who really has a 28 year old business knows better than to tick off or threaten his employees, otherwise he wouldn't have a 28 year old business.

And there's more. He tells his employees that he doesn't care about them. Not a wise move for an employer of supposed 28 years in the business.

And there'd be more if I cared to parse further.

So, this was either written by an anonymous, secretive, worker's comp-ignorant, ungrateful, jerk-to-his-employees, uncaring, bad-hiring (after all, he hired the workers he's dissing) "employer,"

    or

It's some essayist's clumsy attempt to make a point.

I don't like taxes either. I'm an employee, and I know that we have to pay some taxes, but I don't like what I'm getting for my money/taxes either.

That said, apocryphal screeds don't help the cause.
  • Spot on!
There really isn't much to add to the letter. It's quite simple. As an aspiring entrepreneur, I can assure you that I will be approaching retirement the same way. While I desire to better those that surround me, I will certainly not sink myself to help others float. As much as I dislike hourly employees, they are a necessary evil for certain things. Those that are content to get by with the 9 to 5 deserve what they get...not much. Those of us that bust our butts will have to push harder to get to our goals, but then that's what sets us apart in the first place.

God bless us, and God bless America!
  • letter
more copys or actual letters of this nature will be going out than you can possibly imagine in the next two years.
  • Quite A Letter
If only it were true and auto and banks had responded that way! Where is John Galt when you need him?
  • LETTER
    RIGHT ON THE MONEY.

  • There is no "off" button
This is lame propoganda, considering you are the master, I am amused.

People like these do not QUIT and go sit at a beach!!
  • Atlas Shrugged
    It's coming true...
  • Nice!
The sad reality is the Obamanuts still wouldn't understand the meaning of the letter. There is nothing that can be said, seen, or done to let them understand their choice or the ramifications. As long as entertainment tonite says he's the one, he's the one.
  • Who is John Galt?
  • You forgot one tax...
    Y'all

Did you know that if this employer actually decided to expatriate him/herself from the United States that the Imperial Federal Government would impose one final tax on his possessions? Apparently, the US government would lay claim to 50% of all assets before leaving the country if he/she decides to leave permanently.

Such a cheery thought.. You can't even give up your citizenship for a more favorable living condition without the US government taking half of all you assets...already paid for in taxes!@

This letter was written by Dr. Pete Stevens. He is our local Fair Tax guru. His letter was featured on Townhall.com You can read more of his stuff at http://gumballs.blogtownhall.com/
  • Letter to employees
My sentiments exactly. Unfortunately, I am still in the beginning phase of my business. I am still living in my 860 square foot house and driving a company truck (which, of course, I bought). I guess I'll just have to find a way to get through this if Obama gets his way. I'll probably have to downsize, but moving to an island is out of the question and retirement is not even on the scope yet. Too bad, I was beginning to enjoy myself.
  • Boss
Wow! this really hits the mark and very true. This country full of lazy people being rewarded for their bad choices in life will be the end of our society as we know it.
  • Quite a letter
Whoever wrote that letter hit the nail squarely on the head..Hopefully, there are a large quantity of small business owners who do exactly what this boss promised to do. Where did we go off the rails with our priorities? What happens when there aren't enough taxpayers to support the freeloaders that The Anointed One can't wait to send the welfare checks to? We'll have a Depression that will make the 1929 crash look like a day at the beach. God bless the USA...we're going to need it!
  • Who drives the economy
Even if this letter isn't real, it eloquently describes my feelings about our federal government for many years.

You can't create a sustained economic boost by giving spenders a few more bucks. Economic growth comes when more products are made, requiring more people employed to make them, resulting in more people with money to spend. What a nice, simple design. And, it works, too...if left alone by the government.
  • The Boss
    John Galt, right?
  • Ayn Rand would be proud!
It's about time that the producers in this country go on strike! The looters only get our money because we allow them to do so. Our tax code only exists with our collective consent. I love this letter!
  • The Letter
... and Galt's Glutch will be waiting for him.
  • WHO WROTE THAT LETTER?
Neal, I heard you reading this on the air this morning, and it bothers me that something anonymously forwarded is being used for important debates, even if I agree with the content. It's not just a crazy, funny story like the greatest rapper and the greatest golfer (maybe we'll add the greatest President to that one? No doubt some will!)

I've tried to research this letter, there are about a thousand copies on the Web and I don't have the time to look at every one. I found copies attributing it to a Mr. Crowley (some pages say "This is a legitimate letter -- the company actually exists"), but there's this note on that company's website disclaiming it:
    http://www.crowley-crisp.com/ContactUs/tabid/83/Default.aspx

Maybe one of Neal's crew or another listener can track this down better. I don't care so much if it's "real" or not, but I'd like to know something about the author and the exact motivations for writing it.
  • US citizenship
Unfortunately, a few years ago, the Congress made it very expensive to renounce your citizenship and not pay taxes. You now have to pay a one-time steep tax on your entire net worth to get out.

The Democrats passed that bill. We are now trapped. ehasw
  • Sounds Like Boortz
Either Neal wrote this letter or this guy listens to him on a regular basis. You have to learn these things this guy points out through experience because they sure as hell don't teach it in government schools.
  • hrmmmm
    I love this letter.

Obama's promised to create 4 million jobs, where do you think he's going to get that kind of workforce? By causing businesses to shed their workers.

Just the threat of higher taxes seems to have worked. There were 1.9 million workers over the last 4 months of 2008 who lost their jobs. About 1.1 of that since Obama was elected. There's half right there. And someone will spin it to say "People love to work for Government, just look how fast we filled all these new jobs".

Obama's just buying votes. It has very little to do with stimulating the economy.
  • Week long strike by the productive of this country
    Great letter!!!!

What would happen if the productive – the Atlases of this country – were to shut down for a week in a strike as a protest against the growing Socialism of this country?

The government can only buy votes by forcibly taking from the productive. What happens when the productive say “the hell with it “ and stop producing?
  • I wish
One could only hope that this was an actual letter. Of course, if it was, someone would probably view it as a "threat form the boss" and may file some frivoulous lawsuit for harassment.
  • wow... spot on.
  • Letter
    Atlas Shrugged!
  • THIS JUST ABOUT COVERS IT
As a small business owner, this letter hits home. It cuts through all the BS and tells it like it is. I couldn't have said it any better. I have posted statements here about how long will it be before the government keeps over-taxing us small business owners until we put our employees in the street and let the government take care of them. Well, it's pretty close and with the new administration coming in Tuesday, I might be joining this guy in another country retiring real soon. A copy of this letter goes in with next weeks employee checks. When I do retire, maybe some "less fortunate" person will give my former employees a job.
  • This letter
Is apocryphal, like the Willie Lynch letter. It is propaganda.

No owner would be that personal because you don't want to have that connection with people you have to fire.

Plus if he was that intimate to reveal all of that, he wouldn't have signed "your boss"
  • A horrible example
Nice distrotion Neal! Way overly dramatic! The "back story" is a pile. This guy needs to fire them all and retire. Or at least sell the business to the employess and retire. Not everything can be a small to medium business. Not everyone has the talent to begin a business nor the ability, mentally or fisically, to take such risks. Sometimes what you want to do can not be realized in a small company. People are out here working hard in large businesses also.

Now as to the point about taxation, this story makes a good point. Lower taxes do make a better economy. Your Fair Tax, that is another question.

    Bill
  • Amen!
How did the Congress and the President become so economically ignorant and out of touch with reality? As a nation, millions of people spent billions of dollars to mortgage property they could not afford. At the same time, banks borrowed hundreds of billions against leveraged assets far beyond their capability to repay. The economy tanked, companies are going out of business and people are losing jobs by the bushel. So, what's the government’s plan to get out of this mess? They plan to spend trillions; we as a nation don't have and can't afford to borrow. They want to take money from those who create jobs and throw it away on makeshift work, impractical pet projects and pay-offs to their special interest supporters. HASN'T ANYONE LEARNED ANYTHING!!!
