Okay, so this is a little bit of a departure from our normal topics here, but, what they hey! Here's what you need to do RIGHT NOW. Get out your cell phone and add a contact called ICE. That stands for In Case of Emergency. Then put in the person you want contacted when some EMT finds you smashed up and unconscious in your car or in some other situation where you can't call for yourself. We have confirmation from law enforcement that they do indeed look for this contact. So save them a few minutes and pop it in there now.

What others are saying

  • ICE
From a volunteer firefighter for 22 years, ICE is a much used and valuable tool "on scene". No, we won't sacrifice patient care for a phone call, but with a patient stabilized and being readied for transport, there is usually time for someone (fire, police, ambulance) to make a call. All I've talked to when used are very grateful for the call and info. Help us help you!
  • ICE
We have a great show on talk radio in Wilmington, NC called the Blue Line Radio. It is done two local guys with extensive experience in the field of law enforcement. It is one of my favorite segments on the weekend. They gave the same tip about 6 months ago and it has been in my phone ever since. Who knows...? I am a greens superintendent that does any job that the rest of my crew does and who knows if when that golf ball is going to come and ruin your day....
  • ICE
    DONE!

    Thanks for the suggestion.
  • ICE
I have done this for a couple of years now.

As to the phone being damaged or locked--well, then you are no worse off than if you did not have ICE on there. This logic always baffles me: "Well, it is not always gonna work." So what? If it works just some of the time, it can be a great help.

As for "Ice" showing up when my wife calls...big deal. I know who my "ICE" is, plus her picture shows up with the call!
  • Tip
So that your phone doesn't display "ICE" every time your wife calls, don't type the emergency contact phone number into an actual phone number field. Use some other field (address, company etc...) to hold the phone number itself.
  • ICE
Brilliant! This is what is called a BFO, that is a blinding flash of the obvious. Put the info in all our phones today.
  • W.H.A.L.E.
Hey thanks for the WHALE info I have never heard of that but I have a 3 year old and I think I will get this I can use it for both the wife and my care and maybe eve the grandparents. good info
  • ICE
Most newer phone models have this feature and even some have an area for notes. In mine is my blood type, organ donation wishes, and there's room for allergies to medications, etc.
  • W.H.A.L.E.
Another good idea, for your listeners with younger children, is W.H.A.L.E (We Have A Little Emergency.) Same concept as ICE, but it goes on the car seat so emergency workers can learn the name of your child, and contacts, if the parent is unconscious. The URL is http://www.whaleprogram.org/
  • Good idea
..."The other problems you'll run into are... what if the phone is smashed? how do they know which phone at an accident is yours? is your phone locked with a PIN code?..."

Who cares? Another simple way for them to contact your next of kin is a good thing. If anything is wrong with the phone, so what? They do it the way they've been doing it for years and years.

  • THAT'S WHY I LOVE THIS SHOW
Still another reason why I love The Neal Boortz Show ... Little tidbits of information you just don't get on other shows. Kudos to The Talkmaster.
  • a little more info is good
if you have space, put relationship next to name so they know who to call according to your situation. i.e. best friend or wife for example. Could be very different circumstances :-)
  • ICE
Man, you are behind times, I did this over a year and half ago. I have not, "KNOCK ON WOOD", had to use it, but it is on my phone if the need arises.

As a matter of fact I have ICE# 1,2,3,&4. If the first person can not be reached then it goes down the line.

If you have a pcell phone why not have this on there, it may save you and your loved ones some time and effort.
  • Check your phone's features
Some phones have a special feature that includes a special "ICE" contact already. My phone, the LG Chocolate, for instance, shows the contact in bright red to make it easier to find.
  • Almost accurate... but check SNOPES anyway
Yes, having contact info in your phone for emergencies is a good idea, but the EMTs don't have the time to look for it if they're trying to save your life. The other problems you'll run into are... what if the phone is smashed? how do they know which phone at an accident is yours? is your phone locked with a PIN code? Is the contact list easy to use? All this and other commentary on ICE is available on snopes.com. Keep up the good work spreading the word...
  • Did this years ago
It's a little annoying that whenever my dad calls that he shows up as "ICE" when I've got his number in my phone as his own as well, but.. I think the caller ID on my phone always pulls the 1st alphabetical listing. Such is life.

God-willing, it will never need be used, but if it does, I'm sure I'll be glad I've done it.
  • ICE Contact Tip
Neal, thanks for this information. It is invaluable. I will pass this to my employees, friends and family and encourage everyone else to do so as well.
  • ICE
It helps if you call the contact AAICE. That way the ICE contact will jump to the top of the contacts list in your phone. Also, some phones are now coming with an "ICE" button so that it's idiot proof.
