LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN A BUDGET CRISIS?

Yeah ... every where we turn we're hearing about some local government that is in budget trouble. Usually the discussion turns to tax increases. Here's a concept for you: Before any local government raises taxes on already-overburdened taxpayers that local government should eliminate all or most of its funding of "the arts." If a particular artist or artistic endeavor is worthy of support - then let the private sector step up. Any so-called "artist" who cannot produce a work of art that is marketable in the free marketplace should not be allowed to turn to government. In effect, these "artists" are forcing the people to buy works of art that nobody would voluntarily purchase. Have you ever noticed that most pieces of hideously ugly sculpture turn up in laws in front of government buildings? Point made.

What others are saying

  • As an artist, I have painted on cardboard, drawn on toliet paper, and sculpted with aluminum foil. An artist doesn't need government. The government doesn't need an artist. If you are an artist that needs the government to support your life, you ain't an artist (Yep, Southern and PROUD of it). Too many "artist" have learned they can rely on the government for their livelihood, then on there own artistic abilities. A true artist relays on true inspiration, Creativity in materials, and a love of what they do. I have made 2 different people cry on 2 different occasions by giving gifts that cost me under $1 to produce. My art pieces look too much like what I am trying to draw/paint/sculpt that I will never (or would what to) receive government funding. It is MY ability, MY responsibility, and MY own funding that my creating comes from.
  • Just the arts?
Same goes for sports. I have no clue how much city/county/state governments spend on sports arena structures, infrastructure, and associated personnel (traffic cops during games, etc), but whatever it is, it's too much.

When a school system bond issue (etc) is voted down, the A number 1 first thing to go should be funding for the football team.
  • Local arts cuts
I agree. Like most things I remember, the free market fixes...oh wait. Sorry. I guess I do remember when the free market fixed things. If it won't sell,re-do it so it does, or find a new line of work. I have papered my elected officials walls with my letters NOT supporting ANY form of bailout...local or otherwise. Most Government "Grants" are hand-outs, too, IMHO, of course.
Thanks, Neal, for the continued stellar work.

  • Speaking of Local Government...
I love how Atlanta Mayor Shirley "I'm an Idiot" Franklin thinks that cutting police and firefighter hours in a recession is a good idea. Tell you what, Mayor Franklin. Why don't you forgo your tax payer funded police protection and general perks? And leave the necessary cops on duty to keep the rest of us from getting mugged, shot, or our houses robbed. Or maybe we should just dig up some more of your family's businesses to see where tax dollars aren't being paid?
  • Artist should pay their way too.
I'm a graphic designer as well and seriously, the arts are best when funded privately.

The greatest periods of art have been funded not through the government, but through private donors, groups and religious institutions. All of the great Renaissance artists were in effect commission only artists. That was the system that everyone worked under back then... and it produced some of the best and longest lasting works of art in history.

Funding such things through the government will not enhance the arts one bit, but only allow art that would not have been valued during the period it was created in to grow.

One could offer the counter argument of Van Gogh who never really made a dime when he was a live off of his art, but after his death people did see the value of it and it lives on today because of the private market, not because of government intervention.
  • Art In Place
I work in Charlottesville, VA, where the liberal city council here has been funding "Art In Place" along several of the streets and highways around the city for years. (I'm sure Neal remembers this from his visit during one of his book tours.) Most of these so-called sculptures are literally piles of scrap metal welded together. It looks like a 5-year-old designed it. It should be called "Junk in the Road" rather than "Art In Place". The fact that the taxpayers are funding this nonsense is highway robbery. It's a joke!
  • Funding for the Arts
As a matter of principle, I agree with you on the subject of reducing government spending. It seems to me, however, that if there is going to be any gov't funding of the arts, the local level is exactly where it belongs. That's where the artist/taxpayer relationship can be the most enriching and fulfilling. Let's nuke all federal funding for the arts, and allow the local art community to prosper.
  • I'm with ya on this one, Neil. I'm a graphic artist and have worked on my own for over 20 years, never once asking for a hand-out through government grants. Apparently, private citizens and companies like paying me for the work I produce. I tell ya, I feel much better about my work when it's something I like to do and people appreciate it enough to buy it, whether on their own or by request.

The local arts council in the city where I live is constantly putting on seminars about how to write for government grants and I make it a point to have nothing to do with them. These "artists" use the grants to live on while producing junk that I have to avert my eyes from as they sit on the lawn at the courthouse or city hall. I tell them, if people won't buy it then get a real job! Or get better at what you do while you're working at a real job.
