LIBERALS WILL GET THEIR WAY WITH GITMO

Within Obama's first week in office .. maybe on his first day .. we can expect him to issue an executive order to shut down Guantanamo Bay. He'll shut down Gitmo in order to fulfill one of his campaign promises and keep some his fidgety liberal barking moonbat supporters at bay. I say fidgety because some on the left are a little dumbfounded by some of Obama's centrist appointment thus far. And his proposal to provide tax cuts as part of his stimulus package .. what kind of Conservative hash must this guy be smoking? Tax cuts? Let those evil rich bastards keep their own money? Is he nuts?

So, two advisers to Obama's presidential transition team say that the order will come almost immediately. But this is when reality starts to kick in. Even Obama acknowledged over the weekend that closing Gitmo is going to be a challenge. In fact, even if he issues the executive order on day one, it is going to take a long time before you see the last Islamic terrorist goon leaving Cuba. And from there, Obama's team will probably create some sort of hybrid court system to deal with them. The danger is that if you let them into this country they suddenly have full Constitutional protections. That would not be a good thing.

That'll give the Left another countdown to monitor .. now that George Bush will be out of office.

What others are saying

  • Congress didn't declare war?
So what does it mean when President Bush went to Congress, requested authorization to use force in Afghanistan and Iraq? And if it never happened, then I guess Hillary Clinton never made the mistake of voting for that motion, nor does Barack Obama get to claim credit for saying he would have voted against it. Sheesh!
  • Gitmo detainees
Send them to Minnesota. They'd fit right in and get a warm welcome in the Twin Citys area. Let Al Franken's supporters take care of them. Oh, wait, Franken's supporters don't live in Minnesota. Nevermind.
  • GTMO
First of all, the Constitutional Rights should only be applicable to U.S. citizens...but if they want to shut down Guantanamo, fine...no one said we had to let them out of their cages, too.
Close it, and let 'em rot.
  • POWs?
The detainees are not POWs. They are called detainees for a reason: Congress never declared war.
  • Send them to California
Send them to California or more precisely, San Francisco and Berzerckly. I'm sure there are some lefties that could simply talk them out of thier hatred for America.
I'm sure Peloser has a spare room or two.
  • Gitmo
If I am not wrong, in Rasul v Bush the Supreme Court ruled that "aliens" detained in Guatanamo had the right to challenge their detention in American courts? I just can't see them being incarcerated in any Federal prison pending trail since they would probably get killed by their fellow prisoners.
  • Nation of Laws
If we truly are a nation of laws as some of you say, then we need to remove all judges who legislate from the bench. California would be a good place to start.
  • If liberals really knew what torture was...
It boggles my mind how liberals who claim to be educated and enlightened know so little about interrogation and torture. What we do isn't torture. It's like the death penalty. They abhor the thought until it's their family member that's brutally murdered then they want blood. If they want a lesson in torture they only need to look back about 45 years to see how the French dealt with the Muslims in Algiers to stop the suicide bombings there. Waterboarding isn't torture. It's hydro therapy in comparison to what Muslims (and the French) do and have done to their "captives". All the whining is a result of the feminization of America.
  • This is war, not law enforcement
Since when do prisoners captured in war get treated as criminals? The court system is not geared up to prosecute a war. And the people we have captured weren't wearing uniforms or working for a specific government, so they don't get POW status from the Geneva Convention. That means we had free right to shoot them on the spot. However, we wanted to be "nice" and "kind" to the world and the Arab street, so we tried something in the middle, like a non-US prison, with a non-US court. This is ridiculous!
  • Gitmo Goofiness
Leave it to the liberals to make a utter mess of this.
There's nothing wrong with detaining these terrorists at Gitmo. These aren't CRIMINALS, they are TERRORISTS.
If we stick 'em in a regular prison, they'll recruit fellow prisoners. Can we stick them in confinement? I don't think most prisons could handle them.
I am not sure why some people are so insistant that we give them trials. You do know -- or should know -- that during WW2 we had German soldiers held as POWs on American soil in POW camps, and we didn't put any of them on trial. In fact, we treated them quite well.
Those however were soldiers & understood for them the war was over, and knew even if they escaped they'd only be out in a foreign land and most people would never help them.
The terrorists would never be so benign.
  • Prisoners of War
POWs are NOT protected by our Constitution. Terrorists are not even covered by the Geneva Conventions as these apply to uniformed soldiers.
Go back to WWII. Can you imaging bringing home a million POWs and trying to run them through our court system? Are our soldiers supposed to stop in the middle of a battle to read them their Miranda rights, ducument the crime scene, collect evidence for the jury? You have got to be seriously kidding. Idiots all.
  • Solution
If PEBO is going to close Gitmo and wants to treat the war on terror as a law enforcement issue. I suggest we send all the detainees to Joliet, IL. Better yet, lets divide the prisoners up and send them to all the states asking for a bailout. The funds we are spending to house the terrorist can be sent to the states so they actually earn the money that the tax payers will be paying.
  • OK, let's think about what some of you are saying. These are not your garden variety street thugs, these are terror suspects and (I would argue) war criminals. They refuse to wear uniforms and they target civilians (not as collateral, but as the targets).

If you think the justice system is prepared to deal with these folks, I can only hope that Jesus is coming back sooner than I think to take me out of here before the shopping malls start going up!
  • GITMO
I used to have the attitude that whatever we do to these people was fine. I've since lost all faith in my government (regardless of who's at the helm) and now I realize that the tools they're using against terror suspects will someday be used against ME.
  • Why do we keep them at Gitmo?
Have you ever thought why we keep them at Guantanamo Bay and not in the United States? The clear answer is that the United States is trying to do things that would violate United States laws. The rule of law must be upheld. We are a nation of laws, not of men. If you feel the laws are wrong, we need to change the laws, not just move our otherwise illegal activity somewhere else.
  • LIBERALS WILL GET THEIR WAY WITH GITMO
In the spirit of bipartisanship, I will start screaming for Obamma's impeachment for war crimes if Gitmo isn't closed on the day he is inaugurated.
  • Gitmo
Symbolic, but fitting. Every terrorist in the world continues to celebrate the election of Barak Hussein. The first gift to the anti-americans, the closing of GITMO order. Gotta love it.
  • Don't give them constitutional rights!
God forbid we actually assert our belief in our own system and apply it to all people equally, as was intended.

But then, this is the country that passed the Patriot Act, so we've already proven we're quite ready to throw all of our rights away as soon as somebody utters the word 'terrorist'. It's one of the more impressive acts of tyranny in the last century.
  • The only way to "properly" close Gitmo would be to do so in a way which allows for the individual criminal prosecution of every person currently there. Even if it's shut down, that's not in any way to say that all these people are just going to be parachute-dropped into the middle of Oklahoma. I would expect that most of them will wind up in other detention centers.
  • Closing GITMO
I hope you mean shutting down the detention center and not all of GITMO. Although I would be ok if the detention center were left open but shutting down the whole base would be insanely stupid.
