I talked about this on the air yesterday, but let's be honest, a lot of you were probably too busy planning your Super Bowl parties or wondering what happened to your latest issue of "People Magazine." It's OK, you've come to Nealz Nuze, so let's get on with it.

The Washington Times is reporting that the economic stimulus bill includes $2.25 billion for the National Parks Service. That's a lot of money. But hold on .. it gets worse. The chief lobbyist for the National Parks Conservation Association just happens to be the son of the House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey, obviously a Democrat.

So here we have a man, Craig Obey, who is one of the top people in charge of making sure that our national parks get funding from Congress. That's his job. And when this economic stimulus bill came to the Senate Appropriations Committee, Craig and his association managed to get $802 million in stimulus funding. Not bad, considering the obvious question - how in the world is money for our national parks going to stimulate the economy? But apparently, that wasn't the issue. The issue is that when the House Appropriations Committee passed its version of the bill .. that $802 million for national parks suddenly became $2.25 billion. Yes, that's billion with a "B." That amounts to the total yearly budget of the National Park Service. And guess who happens to be the chairman of the committee that bumped up the spending from $802 million to $2.25 billion? David Obey. The father of the chief lobbyist for National Parks Conservation.

Does anyone find this vaguely outrageous? Apparently PrezBO doesn't. He's too busy slamming evil CEOs. The Democrats have been preaching transparency .. but those words only get as far as a teleprompter. You can say one thing, but clearly the Congress is still practicing another.

What others are saying

  • Multi-tasking
Once again...I don't see the point of your concern with people watching televion or sports. It is possible to do two things at once...at least for me. I can keep up with Washington, read a book on economics, AND watch American Idol and the Superbowl. I am sorry your brain is so small that you can't do two things at once... I do think that Obama is proving to be as stupid and uninformed as his voters, especially on the topic of economics and I really like that blond hippie girl they found in Jacksonville on American Idol last week.
  • The largest Carpet Bagging event in history
Barack and his Obamuppets represent nothing more than change we won't have left in our pockets. What a carpet bagging
this administration is pulling on the American people.
  • Re: Parks Supporter
It's probably a good thing that boat ramps aren't fixed and we're lacking bathrooms at our national parks. Boats produce massive amounts of pollution plus noise which disrupt the aquatic life's philosophical discussions and lead to our ice caps melting. And who needs bathrooms? People have to clean them with evil chemicals and the toilet papers kill the charming trees. Just go ahead and fertilize the woods and wipe with a pine cone. Be green or else.
  • The Parks Service desperately needs the money. It's positively shameful how they have been neglected. Got the money to buy condoms and pay ACORN, why the hell not get a start on the billions of dollars of infrastructure needed to fix the parks?

None of it will stimulate the economy, of course, but that's not the purpose of this spending bill. The Democrats are acting like abused children getting a chance at revenge. The problem is they aren't hitting the Republicans, they are hitting my children and future grandchildren.

THis bill should be defeated. In the future, instead of using tax dollars to pay for art like "Piss Christ", buy some new asphalt for Yellowstone.
  • STOP THE MADNESS
I have spent the day going through the "stimulus" plan and am OUTRAGED at the BILLIONS in pork that my government wants to spend my tax dollars on! I don't react just to what the media (left or right) has to say. I went to the source, found the "plan" and educated myself. BILLIONS of dollars of government spending without a chance of job creation. Parks Supporter, GO EDUCATE YOURSELF!
  • Spending Package
Some simple math to help solve the problem. Spend $10 Billion in each of the next three years for Fire Fighters and Police. That would put about 250,000 new ones on the streets. That would really help jobs AND help stop crime. It would also reduce home Insurance cost.

"...but let's be honest, a lot of you were probably too busy planning your Super Bowl parties or wondering what happened to your latest issue of People Magazine."

Such hubris. Don't act like a jackass.
  • Re:Parks [Obama] Supporter: Still waiting
We're all still waiting for you to show us you immense intellectual firepower and justify ALL the pork in the Stimulus bill.

You were quick to condemn the discussion one of the little vote buying schemes, so maybe YOU can enlighten on HOW WRONG we all are to condemn the rest of the bill?
  • Great idea on the Stimulus
This was posted on another site.

We the People of this United States of America hereby demand that the US Congress and the Executive Branch cease and desist in moving forward with the current stimulus package. The bill is full of spending that does not create jobs and we will not have our country crippled by this debt that does nothing to aid the current economic climate. The people demand that all items be presented with an explanation as to how the money will be spent, allocated, and what jobs will be created as a result. Each proposal must meet criteria to be established and the cost benefit analysis must be within the national standard guidelines of a sound business decision. In the interim, to stimulate the economy immediately, every person and company that filed Federal income tax returns for 2007 will be refunded 25% of actual tax dollars paid into the government. This refund of actual taxes paid will NOT be considered taxable income for any future returns, state or Federal. People that did not pay taxes will not receive a check. All foreclosures, repossessions, court assessed fees, evictions, and debt collection will cease for 120 days to allow time for refunds to be issued. The IRS will hire people currently unemployed from job cuts as temporary employees and will process refunds in 8 hour shifts running 24/7. This is a bi-partisan effort by the PEOPLE to demand responsibility and accountability from Washington. http://www.petitiononline.com/stimref/petition.html
  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Somebody didn't get the FACTS exactly correct for Mr. Parks Supporter!!!

    Can the Republic Survive????
  • Re:Parks [Obama] Supporter @ 01/30/09 09:39:11 AM: Your outrage has it's facts wrong
Since you are undoubtedly an Obama supporter and therefore an idiot, you need to understand that what is important here is the Big picture, and not the tiny details.

The fact is the entire bill is a colossal waste of money that will have to be forcibly taken from the people who actually pay taxes.

If your such a genius, then maybe you can justify ALL the other Billions of dollars in spending to buy votes for the Dhimicrats.
  • Obey
    Nepotism at its finest!
  • MORE CHANGE?
This is more change you can believe in.
  • FLOAT YOUR OWN BOAT
Why doesn't Obama take care of his ship before he captains other ones.
  • T. Jefferson
I predict future happiness for Americans if they can PREVENT the government from WASTING the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

    Anybody happy out there?
  • Gov. Agency w/ a Lobbyist
The question is not appropriating $$ to a government agency. The question is, what the heck is the relationship between this lobbyist and a government agency? This agency is not being lobbied by Obey to do something, this Obey is lobbying Congress/Obama to give an agency a bigger budget. Who pays the lobbyist? Smells like someone is trying to conserve dead fish..it stinks!
  • Your outrage has it's facts wrong
If you are going to be outraged, first be informed: the House number was passed first not the Senate number. The House number didn't come from Obey it came from Norm Dicks, and if you think $2 billion dollars is a lot of money, try the nearly $9 billion--yes with a B--maintenance and operations backlog that has piled up at the national parks because of underfunding over the years. That is why the bathrooms and boat ramps aren't fixed. And regarding stimulus...studies show that every dollar invested in national parks comes back four fold to surrounding communities. That isn't a bad return in this economy. Thanks for watching out for our taxpayer funds...but this particular dog won't hunt.
  • Typical Government Employee Behavior
Unfortunately, I am not surprised by this. Nothing these morons do surprise me anymore.
  • super bowl?
    When is the super bowl?

I've been too busy watching the Greatest nation on earth go down the toilet to even think about the super bowl.
  • Strike
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.

    Alexander Tytler

    We have to stop this.
It's time for the Producers, the 'Men of the mind' as Ayn Rand would say, to go on Strike.
  • So Called Stimulus Plan
All this so called stimulus/pork for the parks, & they still wont have any money to fix the restrooms or boat ramps.
