By who?  That would be General Motors.  GM comes to Washington with absolutely no plan to weather the economic storm other than to grovel for taxpayer money.  Do you get that?  No plan!  Nada!  It's either hand over taxpayer funds or we're going to bail .. and if we bail we're taking the rest of the country with us.

What arrogance!

The Big Three returned to Washington in their hybrid cars.  They presented their plans in hopes that this will be enough to get them a government bailout.  But guess what?  There doesn't seem to be any really drastic changes.  Their business models haven't really changed.  Their adhesion contracts with the unions are still in place.  There aren't any secure plans to pay back the taxpayers other than creating a government oversight board.  Oh yeah ... that makes me feel so good; a government oversight board.  I feel better already.

There is some talk about symbolic cuts.  The CEO of GM and the CEO of Ford say that they will work for $1 a year if it means their companies get a taxpayer bailout.  That's great.  The problem isn't solved by paying CEOs a buck a year.  The problem is solved by bring in some management talent that will make extremely difficult decisions and them paying them a gazillion dollars if they can pull their companies out of the fire without raping the taxpayers.

There is already a provision under our laws to take care of this mess.  It's called Bankruptcy.  Chapter 11 bankruptcy, to be more exact.  Reorganization.  The magic of bankruptcy is that all outstanding contracts that are making it difficult for these automakers to compete and survive would or could be cancelled --- and that includes the contracts with the United Auto Workers.  Nancy Pelosi is saying that bankruptcy is not an option.  Why not?  For the very reason I just set forth.  Bankruptcy would not work well for the unions.

The capitalist system - free enterprise - has lifted more people out of poverty than any other economic system ever devised by man.  Freedom works.  And freedom means the freedom to fail if you don't live up to consumer expectations or if you allowed yourself to be drug into unprofitability by asinine union agreements and products the consumers just don't want.

My guess is that the only way these auto companies survive is if they have to fight their way through this without taxpayer help.  A bailout is the easy way out for them.  What a stupid idea it is to throw tens of billions of dollars at these companies only to have them declare bankruptcy down the road.

There's another idea floating around out there.  Let's just take Ford, GM and Chrysler and combine them into one large auto company. Oh yeah .. that ought to work.  Nothing like good old-fashioned competition to spruce up the marketplace.

And speaking of competition ... there is no way the Big Three can survive under their current agreement with the unions.  These unions cannot be allowed to bring these automakers down.  Get rid of them.

What others are saying

  • The problem with bankruptcy
The reason the automakers don't want to file bankruptcy is simple -- it's extremely risky.

If Wal-Mart or Target filed bankruptcy, we'd still go in and buy our clothes and CD's there. But if a car company files bankruptcy, people will be extremely wary of buying one of their cars, for fear the company will disappear and they will be left with no warranty coverage. A bankruptcy filing would probably lead to a disastrous drop in sales.

I wish they could file bankruptcy and get rid of the unions. The unions are killing the auto industry in America. But I can see what a dangerous path that would be to take.
  • college business models
comments from various other blogs seem to mirror the comments made here. what i have not seen/heard is a discussion of the business models taught at ivy league schools & large state university's. it is my understanding that a large portion of the more notable institutions that have failed are headed by individuals with ivy league credentials. if this is correct it may be time to question the nature of current business models. liberal influence in our k-12 system has produced students with a poor understanding of economics and basic business principals. is the same true at the under graduate & graduate levels at our institutions of higher learning?
based on our current economic situation, i suspect there may well be a compelling reason to question what our leaders of industry are being taught in today's liberal colleges.
  • This Is Absurb
I hate to keep beating that dead horse, but will someone please tell me how can these "big 3" car giants be in the car industry to make something just about everyone in the free world needs (cars and trucks)and can't turn a profit and stay in business on their own? You'll tell me maybe the unions are draining them dry. My follow-up question would be isn't it time for reorganization?
  • Dear Auto Retirees & Union Employees
You guys better play ball. Better to have a little of something than all of nothing. Two words.... Eastern Airlines.
  • Chambliss wins so what!
Chambliss won wo what, republicans still do not have a 51 vote majority, even with Lieberman the democrat/independant sheep in republican wolf clothing! Great irony is Chambliss voted for this bail out, is not this funny, the greta savior of the right is a bail out man! It is a irony, and one the right just cannot see the comedy in yet, but it will catch up to them in time!
  • Mo-money?
Throwing money at auto maker will not make recession bound people suddenly go out and buy a big 3 car. Where are THEY going to get the money?

Hand a check over, one check per household, you come up with the dollar figure to make it work. "Good only towards a purchase of a big 3 car" would be on the voucher. After all, this is OUR money anyway. Make them crank the assembly lines to full speed and EARN the money. We get cars, they stay in business, sounds like a fair trade when they are talking about our money!
  • No need for unions anymore
It's the UAW that is killing the auto industry. I worked for a staffing company and we were forced to hire union workers in order to obtain contracts with the client. You wouldn't believe the packages that these union workers got just to do sub-par work and file grievances all day long. I'm not saying that this is the attitude of every union member but it sure was the attitude of the majority that I encountered.

Unions were needed when there weren't any labor laws protecting workers. They no longer serve the worker, they just enable a poor attitude and strangle the industy they represent
  • Funnier by the minute
First I think that we have lost sight of what is happening here. This bailout was started because “6% of the mortgages in this country were in the toilet”. A lot of these companies were posting profits a while back. Suddenly, there is no bail out for home owners and the very people that Congress vilified are getting the money. Some of you either are to blind to see or chose not to see that both sides of the isle in congress are in on this.

( beware what you wish for! wrote ): “Boortz and his colleagues wanted Chambliss, so therefore one can assume they are closet bail out fans too!”

Nice cheap shot, as liberals will so often take. The fact is that you are safe because Martian couldn’t vote or he would have been neck deep in it.

( beware what you wish for! wrote ): “since my belief is republicans have ruined the economy with 8 years of inept, incompetent leadership in congress, senate, white house and 2nd great depression is inevitable”

Nice try! But once again we forget (how sweet) that the Democrats have been at the controls for the last two years and during that time we have seen prices rise. And it was only until the scam crisis came to light that the market fell, which by the way was started by the Congress.

Get a grip people. We are being played. This is one thing that we need to stand together and get rid of. As for all the tax ideas that Obama has brought up, I can only think of this saying:

“The beating will stop when the economy improves”
  • Lets not forget...
Up until a few years ago thy were building brand new VW beetles in Mexico City ranging from $1,200-$1,700 U.S. dollars. I think the reason they were banned here was because of federally mandated pollution contols. My 1991 Honda CRX that can't get less than 50 m.p.g. was discontinued because of federally mandated airbags. It is the federally mandated safety garbage and other nonsnese that is hurting the consumer more than anything. I am about to go from being able to get 8 channels on my television to 2 because of federal mandates. Somebody needs to be shot over this.
  • Auto bailout.
The big three will get their money cause the Washington Democrats owe all the labor unions across the country big time. And its time to pay up, in spite of the desires of the people.
  • They're just using the wrong approach
All those big wheels from the auto industry and the union thugs need to look those senators in the eye and say; "Look here, we are just 6 months from having flying cars, now you can hold back the money if you want, but the American people will be cheated out of their FLYING CARS!!!. And we all know that is what the American people want! So make with the checks please."
When the flying cars don't show up in 6 months the response can simply be; "Washington wouldn't give us enough research money, and the regulatory atmosphere has made our flying car project overly burdensome...but we'd like some more money."
Show a little creativity for heaven's sake!
  • Auto Bail Out
One of the richest industries in the world will bail out the auto industry without any help from the tax payers. That would be the oil industry. How can the oil industry allow the main consumer of its business fail? It cannot and it will not allow the Big Three to collapse into oblivion. Let them fail and file Bankruptcy, restructure and then the oil industry can dust the big 3 off and send them on their way. Problem solved. Very simple!
  • This Situation Is Getting Pathetic
For months, the funds have been dwindling. The CEO's have been whining. The usual rhetoric is still being spewed by the UAW. Corporate jets fly to Washington. Full page ads are bought in newspapers.

Maybe I've missed something, but when have all potentially affected parties called for or have conducted brainstorming sessions to get serious about saving themselves?

A turkey's brain is 2% of body weight, they suffer a 70% mortality rates, and they will drown themselves in the rain by looking toward the sky until they are fully saturated. Apparently those in charge of the big 3, as well as those who work for them, are suffering similar issues that threaten their own existence. They are doing nothing to prevent their own demise.

Whatever happened to pride in this country? Have things gone so far downhill in this nation, that begging for money is the only way to solve financial woes?

Every single man, woman, and child in this nation today owes $35,018.94 as their part of the national debt. This is insane. This must stop. It is not the Government's job to save private enterprise, regardless of the negative impact it may have on a select segment of the population.

Giving the big 3 so much as a dime will only be akin to giving cash to someone with a severe gambling problem. They will likely head straight to the casino to bet it all. Before we know it, they will be knocking on the door, asking for more.

It's time for the big three and all those who will be directly or indirectly affected, to work the situation out themselves. The American people are not the Department of Welfare, nor are we Bank of America.

File bankruptcy and buy the time to fix the problems that have plagued the American auto industry for at least the past two decades, or suffer the consequences and understand that some things simply are not worth saving.
  • GM
Going Back to Mexico, to Mexico, To Mexico, going back to Mexico..

    Well I guess so.
  • AUTO UNION BAILOUT
I heard Pelosi's comment about the Big 3's bankruptcy not being an option...What horsesqueeze (to coin Neal)! Pelosi cannot control her slobbering over one of the Dems' main campaign veins, which includes virtually all labor unions (i.e teachers, textiles, etc.). I hope that these corporate raiders have built their coffers large enough to "bail out" their own members when the jobs vaporize into thin air! Let's ask those steelworkers and coal miners how much the unions helped with their mortgages when they lost their jobs in the 70's & 80's...
  • Taxpayer Bailout
How about the taxpayer bailing himself out...with a nice fat tax strike? Imagine if millions of productive Americans just told the IRS to pound sand.
  • The Unions
The labor unions have for years coerced companies into giving high wages, medical benifits, retirement plans, etc. by striking for all the previously mentioned reasons. Until they realize that they have put the auto makers in a position where they can no longer compete, the auto makers will be in danger of going out of business. The end result should be for the auto makers to file chapter 11 so that these contracts can be renegotiated. Until then the auto makers will be in danger of not only failing, but the jobs they provide will be lost. I don't believe the unions should be disbanded, but they need to realize that if they put the auto makers out of buisness, they will also be responsible for the loss of jobs for there members.
  • Auto Mfg plans to take our Tax Bux
Hey Neal, Ford sells a perfectly wonderful five passenger car that gets SIXTY FIVE MILES PER GALLON!!!

But they only sell it in Europe and they refuse to bring it over here claiming that Americans won't buy a diesel car (unlike M-B, VW and soon, Nissan). Diesel autos constitute more than half the European auto market, but not here.

Another reason why diesels don't go over well here is that the Fed charges $1.00+ road tax on diesel fuel since they feel that its mostly trucks that burn the stuff. Besides, the "Gummit" would rather have us buying hybrid vehicles that have complex batteries made in S.E. Asia somewhere... so go figure who wins in that deal.

If Ford is going to beg congress for something, they need to be begging for a repreve on the diesel fuel tax that discourages Americans from buying these VERY efficient vehicles.
  • My tax money
I have not heard one convincing argument as to why my tax money should be used to save a company ruined by poor management and a greedy labor union.
  • Something else...
1 - why are they driving down there in Hybrids? The Hybrid has zero mileage advantage on the highway.

2 - The UAW can step up to the plate and help out.

3 - Chrysler's owner has more money sitting there but won't put a dime into the company. There is talk of a lawsuit against Daimler, claiming that they were lied to in order to recoup their money. Daimler claimed that their investment in Chrysler is zero - I sent the a letter telling them I will take their 20% for a buck if it worthless.

4 - the American auto workers need to stop thinking that hybrids, electric cars, and what they have will help them but they still don't get it - they don't build what the market wants.
  • Government mandates have helped create this mess
I am getting tired of hearing Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank bloviating about how the Big 3 need to build responsible cars that people want. The problem isn't that they are not making more Chevy Volts that no one wants. The problem is government mandates such as CAFE and local content that prevents them from allocating resources and capacity to profitable products. As a result, they effectively have to put all their eggs in a couple of risky baskets in order to generate a return. Combine that with the union contracts and their business model is totally unworkable.
  • The money is owed no matter what...
Sure, the unions are the root cause, but to suggest that going into Ch. 11 protection will void the union contracts and bring the auto makers back into the black is only part of the story.

The fact is that the auto makers have scores of retirees who get pension checks and health insurance from them. Voiding the union contracts will certainly help, but those obligations are not going away. Do you think Ford will just stop paying those pensions or insurance premiums? The outcry over that would be deafening.

And if they DID do that, how long would it be before Obama and crew bailed out those retirees?

Bottom line - the money is owed and it WILL be paid. One way or another.

  • Give it a rest
Do you seriously think Jim Martin wouldn't have voted for the bailout? I voted for Chambliss and I still don't want the Big 3 to get our money.

I still want to know if Chapter11 would get rid of the union contracts why is it that the companies don't want to go this route? I can understand the unions not wanting it but why not the Big 3?

Hey Nancy! Bankruptcy *IS* an option!
  • Romney said this weeks ago
In the NY TImes to boot

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/19/opinion/19romney.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss
  • Big 3
Let them file chapter 11. The UAW has killed them. That is the reason the Big 3 have sent jobs outside of the US of A. I haven't heard of any of the European or Asian companies loosing like the Big 3. Maybe they know how to run a company and don't need unions.
  • Arrgance is the problem
    Finally someone sees it.

Look you all got to come to Detroit and take a close look at the attitude here, it is horrible. Most of the people live in their own world and even when advertising of the cars, the dealers don't run ads for the consumer but the auto workers. If they don't know that they get a discount, they don't deserve jobs.

The working for a buck is not good enough, they already worked out how much compensation they 'deserve' and the dollar is nothing, their staff and the CFO, COO, CSO and others will still get all of their salary and stock options/bonuses. It is not that I am against them making money, I want to see some passion for their company.

Oh Detroit and the state are already in Washington trying to be the first to get state/city bailouts.
  • Chambliss bail out vote!
Guess the saying is beware what you wish for is poetic justice, Boortz and his collegues wanted Chambliss, so therefore one can assume they are closet bail out fans too! Since Chambliss voted for this whole bail out mess, I for one have no real thoughts on the issue, since my belief is republicans have ruined the economy with 8 years of inept, incompetent leadership in congress, senate, white house and 2nd great depression is inevitable as it was when Herbert Hoover left office, all one can hope on is that Obama is up to the task of being a FDR and pull us out of it in time, and history proved it took more than one term to do it!
  • Dealers Screwed!
My bet is that the only group that will take a hit here is the dealers. The people who actually sell the cars and are at risk every day. They're an easy target.
  • Cut the Cancer
UAW is the Cancer that will bring down the automotive industry.

Jobs belong to the big 3 not the unions!
  • IG
Your assuming they are worth a dollar.
  • GM bankruptcy
If GM and the rest go bankrupt, maybe instead of GM, we will have Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac and Cadillac. Each of these companies would be competition instead of other versions of the same company. This would force each company to compete with each other. Better competition, better cars. It was not until we had imports killing our industry that Detroit started making decent cars. As long as they think they do not have to compete, they will not become efficient.
  • bailout
I see the attitude in Detroit is Bailout...Bailout....Bailout. How long will it be before the Detroit lions come to Washington asking to be bailed out of this season.
  • Mergers
I am concerned about this whole bailout situation because it seems to be getting closer to monopolies running the banking industry. All of these mergers that are government backed just don't quite smell right.
  • Contracts
Since when is failing to honor contracts good capitalism? Were these union contracts forced upon the companies by government? If so, then screw 'em. But if they signed those contracts willingly then, while bankruptcy may be a legal way out, it isn't moral.

Does anybody know the details of the signing of these union contracts?
  • Big Three Bailout
The auto giants do not want to file Chapter 11 Bankruptcy until AFTER they get the bailout funds. Then they can cancel that debt also. Congress needs to secure any bailout money with liquid assets starting with Managements pensions.
  • Let 'em go
BAH! Let 'em go. We don't need them.
  • this makes no sense....
Neal Im not sure why you would write this when you voted for Chambliss. If your show is supposedly about the painful truth, then I hope today when you talk about GM having their hands out that you will talk in direct conjunction about how Saxby Chambliss helped to bring this nonsense about. Saxby has indeed helped to open the flood gates by voting to give Henry Paulson MORE centralized power and make him "non-reviewable" by any court system in America. Its just beyond me as to why you would complain about this obvious socialism then support this very same thing by voting for a socialist sympathizer like Saxby. There is absolutely no reason to complain if you voted Chambliss. Its like if I were to complain about people who govern by non democratic islamic law, then proceed to support leaders in Saudi Arabia or call them my allies. Hopefully you will shed some painful truth on this irony.
  • Here's a thought...
How about letting the overpaid, lazy union workers work for $1 too?
