WEALTH ENVY ...

I know what you're thinking right now.  You would like to take a trip into the mind of someone who just can't stand the fact that there are people out there who have worked smarter, harder and longer and in the process have become very successful.  Yeah .. how dare these people work that hard and earn that much money?  Don't they realize they're making me look bad?

Have you ever tried to noodle out the thought processes behind wealth envy?  Here, let me help you.  Nobody likes to be told that they just haven't worked smart enough or hard enough to become wealthy.  People don't want to accept the fact that they've made some pathetic decision in their lives that stood in the way of success and wealth.  They don't want to be told they didn't pay attention to their education. They don't want to hear that they took a dead-end job and hung with it for years. They don't want to hear that they were too eager to punch out and head home after their required eight hours every day .. eschewing a bit of extra work that might have moved them ahead a few squares.  People don't want to hear that all of the money they spent on booze, partying, bass boats, vacations, car payments and lifestyle might have been better invested for future returns.

In short .. so many people just can't bring themselves to accept the fact that it is they who have held themselves back.  No.  No way.  It's not their fault they aren't rich.  You can hear the thought process:  "I'm a good person.  I work hard.  I put in my 40 hours a week.  I pay my taxes.  I coach little league.  It's not my fault I'm not rich.  Those rich people cheated.  They have crooked lawyers.  They cheat on their taxes.  They've exploited people like me.  They're may be poor but at least I'm honest.  Those rich people are all crooks and they're holding the rest of us down.

Now ... an object lesson.  Here is an excerpt from delightful little email I got from some lady named Joy of Bradenton, Florida. She is more than a little upset about a conversation last week with a caller. The caller and I were wondering where the good investment bargains might be right now ... a question that many are asking.  Here you go:

"Don't you think that the fact that people like you with in your words " lots of money to invest" need to actually pay the taxes that they owe? My daughter is a CPA, so I know that most wealthy people use so many loopholes that they end up paying less tax percentage than the working poor. (BTW, she will not let her clients take questionable deductions although the most wealthy of them are always trying to find new ways to cheat. It is her license on the line if they lie on a tax return so she tells them to find another CPA if they insist on shady accounting practices.)

"Isn't it time for the people who use the system against the interests of the country by cheating on their taxes pay their actual tax liability? Isn't that the real Patriotic thing to do?  You profess to be a Patriot, don't you?

"The auto unions are not the enemy, the illegals are not the enemy, the greedy are the enemy.

"Sell your private jet and pay someone's mortgage that is being thrown into the street because their minimum wage job (that they were forced to take after they were laid off as the stockholders and CEOs steal their pension money) won't let them hold on to their home.  Lose your cushy transportation and save your soul."

Yeah, that's it.  People earning minimum wage are being foreclosed on because of corporate stockholders and CEOs.  It couldn't possibly have anything to do with the fact that they just aren't worth more to an employer than a few bucks an hour.  Oh well ... forget it.  To Joy and to people like her the rich are evil, and there's no changing that.  The poor are only poor because rich people made them that way.  Joy will remain poor .. she's programmed that way.  Sad.  She could change, but I don't see it.

What others are saying

  • Wealth Envy
The sad fact is that all of us have been at some point, or are currently victims of, wealthy envy. We often see things that others have and in some quiet moment wish we had it too. Many of us even use this envy to fuel our ambition. Even if it was when you were young, you saw something that someone else had and wanted it. In my opinion the number of people envying the wealthy has not risen dramatically. Neal is absolutely right that some of us are lazy, witless, spoons. We aren't all critical thinkers, motivated to be the best we can be. However, we are all capable of becoming, and that is what I espouse. BE CRITICAL THINKING! Now, the guy that wrote the article about the $500,000 parking space missed the point when he discussed this with Neal. He should have let Neal have it by remaining calm and clearly explaining his point. He also should remember that Neal is an entertainer and does this for a living. YOU CAN'T WIN! Anyway, point one, can the wealthy be compassionate? Sure they can. Or, if they so choose, they can flaunt what they have, even in these harsh economic times. The point, which the guy couldn't even make, is that with people losing their homes, can the rich person selling the parking lot simply show some compassion? That's it. Point two, we firmly believe in letting the market determine the value of goods. This is the successful model we have employed as a nation to become the world's economic powerhouse. Still, am I the only one that doesn't think it's sad that a parking space is going for $500,000? I don't care where it is, or how close it is to the slopes. It's a parking space, people! It's not a Renoir(spelling?). It's not an ancient sculpture. It's not a luxury fur, a piece of fine haute couture clothing, a Swiss timepiece, or a piece of wondrous tech. IT'S A PARKING SPACE! Who is the sucker that's going to buy it? This is America and we have the right to do what we want with our money. Yet, you, whoever you are, if you pay $500,000 for some concrete that's squared off by paint, I reserve the right to talk about your fat broodmare, cigar-smoking, sitting on your pampered backside, I want your money but not your mentality, behind ... LIKE A DOG! I can do that my friends, because I'm American.

  • Wealth Envy
I'm 59 years old. I have steady job and a military retirement. I'm OK, not great.

I have had the fortune to know several wealthy and successful people over the years. The guy that lives across the street from me started several businesses before becoming successful.

I have found one thing that all these people have in common. They work some ungodly amount of hours and never really have a "day off."

For myself? I graduated from high school in the 1960's. I had a chance to go to college but would have had to work my way through. I decided that SF and the 'Summer of Love' sounded better. So that's were I went.

I quickly learned that all these kids at Berkeley and in the Haight had no conception of real life. Most were surviving on checks from Daddy and the rest were surviving off them.

I attended an anti-war rally at the Oakland Induction Center in Oct 1967. I found that most of the demonstrators were idiot and the rest were there to get into the pants of the females. (Who were generally the more zealous)

Convinced that anything those idiots were for, I was against, I went down and enlisted in the Army. I retired in 1989.

Everything I am, ever was or was not, I owe entirely to myself. Wealth is not something that I have ever pursued nor is it something that greatly desire.

It does not bother me in the least when I observe that someone has a bigger house, a fancier car or nicer clothes (what's nicer than T-shirts and blue jeans?)

There's lots of things that I would do if I had the money but since I don't, I don't.

I have found that the two most destructive emotions in the world are envy and resentment. Go talk to any recovering addict or alcoholic and they'll tell you that those two emotions were at the bottom of their problems.

Curiously it seems to be exactly what the whole Democrat agenda is built on. Envy of other people's success and resentment that they have more than you.

It's ruined a lot of lives and there is no reason to believe that it will not do the same thing for our society.
  • Wealth envy
If someone can get rich on sheer determination and hard work then good for them. Masters degree / strong work ethic has gotten me to a level that I am comfortable but hardly wealthy. I will be able to retire, enjoy my golden years, and leave my family something when I'm gone. Want to make it to the top of the business ladder these days? All the hard work doesn't make much difference. Instead it is more likely who you know, or what your bloodlines are. Guys work their butts off to be promoted only to see the son of the boss, family friends, or golf buddies, get those chances. This notion that hard work and education alone will get you there is a fraud. The only way hard work and smarts actually "guarantes" wealth or success is in entrepenural settings. Anyone who has worked in a corporate setting will be able to recite stories of who got ahead and how they got there. In a lot of cases those people are qualified and even go on to do a good job but this notion that not becoming wealthy is from lack of effort or education is bogus. There are plenty of us who paid our way through school, worked our tails off to get ahead, raised a family on a manager or directors salary who were NEVER going to be in the inner circle of executive management because the old boys network is alive and well. I am not envious of anyones money. I hope to make it myself. What Neal fails to see though is the opportunity to make that money quite often is not decided by effort or qualification but rather the same way it has been for a thousand years. I was naive when I was younger but I will never forget what an older employee told me. I was 5 years into my career when I told a guy who was 15 years in how I thought the CEO of our companies son wasn't the brightest bulb. He told me "Careful what you say...he will be the boss one day". I asked what he was talking baout. This isnt a small family firm. This is a mid sized corporation with a board and responsibilities. He set me straight and said it didn't matter. Sure enough, that guy never got any sharper but yet managed to get himself all the way to a plum VP job. His best friend growing up managed to get a sweet little setup himself over a guy who had dedicated years to the company. It came down to who knew who, and who was friends with whom. Sad, but a very common story. Too bad Neal thinks it's wealth envy.
  • I envy the poor
Christian is full of pride. I'm not so sure of the source of his pride, but I'm pretty sure it it's not his ability to define net worth.
To Christian, a rich person is a sleezy type with a bleached smile, fancy haircut, and a leased German sedan. These types have one thing in common and that is poverty. Most people wouldn't know a wealthy person if they bit them on the butt.
  • Wealth Envy
I always like Neal's view on this subject. Here's a quote, "You should be happy with your posiition in life, after all you deserve to be there. Afterall, it's the result of all the decisions and choices you've made in your life up to present."

Remeber: Poverty is a state of mind, likewise, so is wealth.
  • Well, Christian, if you believe that you are "too smart for us" and don't have to reply to us, then please don't.

The sad thing, of course, is that there is really no sign of this type of behavior disappearing ....

By the way, the Atlas Shrugged refrences are quite fitting to this discussion ....
  • what is greed???
christian (no cap needed)You can’t answer the question, because any answer to “what is greed” is a subjective/opinionated answer. Brian put “An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves”
The question: who or what is the determining factor as to what someone needs or deserves? No one “needs” to have a computer, and no one “needs” to have indoor plumbing, humans have survived for thousands of years without these comforts of life, so are people greedy for having these conveniences? In some people’s eyes it is yes, most logically thinking people see it as progress. All people need is food, water, heat and enough shelter to cover them to survive, is anything beyond that considered greedy? In the Soviet Union, it was damn close to that. The liberal mind isn’t far off, that of course, is not the case if your part of the rich liberal party, than it’s just fine.
Christian here is some food for thought: to think is hard, to follow is easy- To earn in hard, to take is easy- to achieve is hard, to take handouts is easy. I’m really not surprised you voted democrat, what do the democrats stand for? To put in basic terms: to take from the achievers (by force), to punish ambition, determination, hard/smart work ethics, and to “give” to the underachievers, which rewards the lazy, uneducated, and people who make bad decisions which puts them in low income earners. The one thing I find amazing is that the people who live on welfare have a better lifestyle than the average European, and yes, I’ve lived in Europe and seen it firsthand (Germany 1993-1996 and UK 1999-2001)
  • Wealth Envy
I live in a nice neighborhood and myself and my neighbors all do pretty well. One thing I've noticed while standing at my kitchen window at five-thirty or six in the morning making coffee is how many cars are driving by LEAVING FOR WORK!!! I am usually out the door by 7 myself. I wonder if this simple fact has anything to do with how much wealth is in our neighborhood? Most NIGHTS when I come home I see those same cars coming in too.
  • Joy's E-mail
Joy was not very eloquent in her message, but I believe she makes at least one valid point that was easily dismissed by Neal due to the tone of the letter. It was in the last sentence:

"Sell your private jet and pay someone's mortgage that is being thrown into the street because their minimum wage job (that they were forced to take after they were laid off as the stockholders and CEOs steal their pension money) won't let them hold on to their home. Lose your cushy transportation and save your soul."

She seems irrational, and quite possibly she is, but it sounds like she witnessed several productive people in her company get laid off this year while the CEO and his cronies collected several million dollars in bonuses and tax options. I can identify with that. Some of these people were likely life-long employees. With the economy in shambles, this person is expressing a truth. People are having to settle sometimes for minimum wage employment to get by. That's even if they can find that. With all due respect, we all make some mistakes, so lighten up. We see the economy going through a downturn, yet revel in the fact we can purchase so much at such a deep discount. In the meantime, these folks are likely to have little under the Christmas tree this year.
  • JR's Definition of Greed
"more than what one needs or deserves"

Regardless of my political affiliation, financial situation, and probable bad grammar and spelling, I am curious about this definition. So far in this column, "greed" has been used to describe only the wealty. Cannot the poor be greedy too?

Oh, and freedom of speech allows you to say (or not say) whatever you want. The best arguing is done when you keep an open mind, but continue to evaluate and defend your position. Some of my favorite arguments have been when I was forced to completely reevaluate my beliefs.
  • Christian - Wealth Envy?
Perhaps you should save your concern for Judgment Day for yourself, since you apparently stand with those who support the wholesale slaughter of innocent babies for profit.
  • Private Jet?
Hey Boortz....when did you install a turbine on that Mooney?
  • Poor Christain
    Christian,

Let me start by saying that you have proven to everyone here that the only thing that you have going for you is the ability to insult people and hide behind your ignorance. Yes you have right of free speech and I encourage you to use it, however understand, that I see you for what you are, a simpleton.
Most people “choose” not to answer a question many times because they cannot. You take things out of context so that you can appear to be the victim. To see the views of others that do not think as you do as insanity only shows your further narrow mindedness. This my friend is what has gotten us to place we are today and like so many other Liberals, you find it far too easy to use childish tactics to make your point. You like to call people name in hopes that they will stop talking so that you are the only voice heard. Sorry! That’s how I see it.
“FREEDOM OF SPEECH” – a double edge sword that can cut both ways.
You say we are hate mongers, might I suggest you step back and take a look in the mirror!
  • Oh, Joy, Joy, Joy
Where do you think all those loopholes came from in the first place? The folks taking advantage of them don't just make them up. They are provided by the IRS. I don't blame anyone for taking all the loophole deductions they can. Your gripe shouldn't be with people making more money than you make. Your gripe should be with our ridiculously intricate and archaic tax code. Besides, those "evil rich S.O.B.'s" do pay their fair share of taxed. In fact, if they didn't and we had to rely only on the lower income earners taxes, we would become a third world nation in a matter of hours. Do you work, Joy? If you do, chances are you owe your job and your income to someone making a considerably higher income. Your daughter does as well. More than likely she entered her career because she could make a good salary by dealing with wealthy people. If she knew she had to rely on less-than-wealthy clients for her livelihood, she very well may have pursued a different line of work. Don't resent people for playing by the rules (or as you would probably say, taking advantage of the rules). If you don't like the rules, get off your duff and do something to change them. The Fair Tax would end all this "fair share" nonsense. Or at least it should. We'll always have "Joys" of the world whining about something!
  • insanity
This is what happens when the stupid are given access to email.
She isn't an accountant. Her daughter is. And her daughter, a CPA, refuses to give rich folks shady or illegal deductions? What an angel. Truly unique approach. Really. Shocking.
Of course, this fool decides that you should sell your private plane, which you purchased with your hard earned money, and pay off someone elses foreclosed property as a nicey-nice feel good. And why shouldn't you take care of someone elses problem? They don't 'deserve' to be foreclosed?
Stupid people like this are the reason Obama is in office, placing Clinton era jerks in control of our government (once again lying about his fresh approach and washington outsider street cred).
Why be surprised? Uneducated ignoramuses stole the election from those in the know and they are just fine with redistributing your accumulated wealth. Why not give your money to someone who didn't work for it, didn't get the education they needed, and overextended themselves on a loan they couldn't afford?
It's clearly all your fault because you are rich.
  • Christian
uh why "we" live in this little corner? How many times have you posted on this and other threads here today? You seem to be rather fascinated with a bunch of people and ideas you profess to not agree with. Do you really need to be reminded why you vote a certain way? I don't. I have known for quite some time now, long before talk radio ever existed, how I believe and what I expect from my elected politicians. At this point in time they all do a lot more than I want but Dems would definitely give away the farm.

And again, it's always liberals who use such hateful tones while telling us how hateful we are.
  • Boortz grammar police! Smile!
    By Roberta @ 12/01/08 12:42:23 PM

I stand corrected for my poor grammar by the Boortz grammar police "Roberta", but still stand by my comments, and nothing the grammar police can say will change my views, opinions, least of all when it comes to why I am so glad Ingraham, Boortz, Oreilly, Savage, Limbaugh are the cheer leaders for the zealots on the right, you guys are the gift which keeps on giving, your real leaders in your party the elite, 2% whom call the real shots, blame you all for their defeat/debacle, so the more you all fuss, cry, rant and rave the better for us democrats, since your so divided and turning to cannabalism in your own party, you will be little more use than a gelded stud horse!
  • Who is John Galt.............
  • No wealth here
I would be getting close to wealthy if not for the greedy scum in the banking and housing sectors. Now half my wealth has vanished because I've been told to stay in the market up until now. There's a lot of people who belong in prison who orchestrated this CDO/Derivative scam. Most Americans have no clue what really happened. If they did, they would be revolting. Eventually what happened will get out but by then their 401k's and IRA's will be back to about 25% down instead of 50% down. Commercial real estate and credit cards are the next house of cards to fall.
  • Greed
Again you have failed to define greed my friend. who's to say how much I need. If the government tells me how much I need then that's communism. we live in a republic country. that's a country of law not mob rule. And as far as the deserve part. If I work hard, invest smart, and spend wisely I deserve all that I get as long as I didn't steal or cheat anyone else out of it. If we fail to reward hard work this country will continue to migrate to a socialist nation.
  • I repeat is not freedom of speech beautiful!
    By Ken @ 12/01/08 12:04:43 PM

I guess ken just cannot fathom, freedom of speech also includes my not having to answer questions from the Boortz peanut gallery fan club, am much to smart for you here, thats why you Boortz fans live in this little corner, I visit only to anger you, and read your insanity to remind myself why I voted democrat!
  • This is funny... CHRISTIAN
    ...Boortz deserves his fans club!
I find Boortz fans interesting, reassuring why they lost this last election, they live off of hate, viciousness, arrogance, greed, vanity, fortunately your in the minority now! Get used to it!

1st of all - Boortz did not run for anything.
2nd - your word usage and grammar is far from perfect. At the end of your run-on sentence and I quote: "...fortunately your in the minority now!" - your should be spelled you're.
  • Who is greedy again?
    greed (grçd) Pronunciation Key
    n. An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth: "Many . . . attach to competition the stigma of selfish greed" (Henry Fawcett).

I really think people need to zero in on the heart of greed, the desire to get more than what you deserve or need. If you invent a great technological advance, or make smart business moves, do you not deserve that money? Why do the government and others deserve such a large percentage of income when it was your hands, brain and heart that made this money? No, people do not "need" 12 cars but most of the people I see with excessive amounts of cars, homes etc, are celebrities and lottery winners not regular joe bloke who worked hard to climb the ladder. I'm not saying people who work min. wage don't work hard, its not that. Its that they don't work hard to get OUT of it. There are so many programs that were unavailable before if you just LOOK LOOK LOOK. Find something you can do well and "exploit" your ability.
Hershey chocolate went bankrupt 2 (possibly 3) times before succeeding!
You have to be willing to fail and continue to try. We can't all "win" at the game, but you're definitely not going to if you sit on your butt complaining about the "idle rich".

I knew a man who died with (at least) 2 million dollars in assets. He made almost 200,000 a year for the past 20 odd years. No one had any idea, he lived in a 800$ a month 2 br apartment, had a TV from 1992 (we told him so many times to throw it away, it barely works), donated to worthy charities. He was the kindest most generous man I knew who lived WELL within his means.
He disagreed with the tax system, and if you tried to tell me he was greedy I would probably wallop you one as would anyone who knew him.

P.S. I kept the TV as a reminder. As he said, its the ride not the result thats the most enjoyable.
  • Christian and 3rd world countries
Nice Christian! You listed one of the two main differences between our country and all those you mentioned. Sadly, the other is our amazing freedom and ability to produce and KEEP personal wealth. So who should go live with the Chinese?
  • Lawrence
Lawrence, congrats on your success but be prepared for more of the same treatment by this society of looters while being characterized as 'evil' by idiots like Christian below. One day when you and the rest of the world's producers decide you've had enough, the Christians will be first to cry that the world is falling apart at the seams because there are no minds left to produce the technology they need to function, medicine they need to be healthy, transportation they need to move, and finally, food they need to survive.

    Who is John Galt indeed...
  • Her rhetoric sounds familiar....
Sounds like a character from Atlas Shrugged. You decide who.
  • Christian
    Christian,

David did not tell you to be quite. He actually is encouraging to use your freedom of speech by asking you to define your use of the word greed. I see you still can't come up with one!! He simply ask you to go away if all you are going to do is throw around words and talk about things you have no clue about.
  • Is not freedom of speech a beautiful thing!
    By David @ 12/01/08 11:46:15 AM

No I think I will not take your advice, I rather enjoy my freedom of speech, and might ad, if you do not like it, move to one of those nations where you can silence speech you dislike, such as Russia, China, or some other 3rd world facist, dictatorship such as North Korea, Cuba, am sure you would find those whom like your brand of speech only for certain people! You would fit right in like a pea in a pod!
  • Christian
You keep throwing words around you CAN'T define. Please Christian just go away to the rock you crawled out from under. Go to your church and get some more biblical teachings. Just go away and live your miserable life hating people that want to achieve wealth and live life as an individual and not as a leach on society.
  • Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)
    To: christian

To take from one because it is thought that his own industry and that of his father’s has acquired too much,

in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill,

is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association—the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his

industry and the fruits acquired by it.
  • Boortz deserves his fans club!
I find Boortz fans interesting, reassuring why they lost this last election, they live off of hate, viciousness, arrogance, greed, vanity, fortunately your in the minority now! Get used to it!
  • dying child feeds the homeless!
    http://spotlight.news.yahoo.com/v/10836826
  • Christian you are sad.
... and you live in a glass house. Your grammar is not perfect (neither is mine) so don't throw stones. Also, you are rather judgmental which is NOT very Christian like, now is it? Arrogant Christians I can do without.

As far as wealth envy, as long as we keep enabling people to join the ranks of welfare, we will have wealth envy. We can never give enough to make these people happy.
  • Christian's spelling comment
Pull the plank out of your own eye: it's "want to be's" or "wanna be's" not "want a be's".
Why is it that when a thought is posited that ticks someone off, the response is always something to do with spelling or one's heritage being lacking? ugh.
  • Boortz fans are not rich class of society!
    Christian,

Sorry about the miss spelled word. I'm sure you have done that at least once in your life time.

Please keep your comments to yourself as long as you describe yourself as a christian. It's people like you that give christians a bad name. I stopped referring to myself as a christian a long time ago. I now refer to myself as a follower of Christ.

I'm still waiting on the definition of greedy!!
  • Envy THIS!
In 2006 I had a good year (after six years of hard work and severe risk plus many more years of preparation and study). That year I only paid 16% of my income (long term cap gains) - HORRORS! Does that mean I didn't pay my FAIR SHARE? If you take the total amount collected that year, divided by the number of taxpayers, I not only paid MY share, but those of 270 other people who didn't pay a cent. I didn't even get to claim myself or my family members as deductions (a final slap in the face for being successful). I have managed to create some valuable technology that the U.S. desparately needs (no one else has even come close), and provided good livings for some 90 people, for several years. I have also bought many things that provided good livings for people that build cars (admittedly, none in the U.S.!!!!!), homes, and many, many other products.

So... EXCUSE ME FOR LIVING. I hope you poor people CHOKE on the $2.8M that was stolen from me by the IRS. Ingrates.
  • wealth envy and Obama
It seems as though Obama was elected because of greed, envy, ignorance and apathy. What a shocking state we're in.
  • Second Reply to Christian
As a christian, I feel insulted by your comments. Your comments (or dare I say "mud-slinging") are judgmental and intolerant. You need to step back and take a look at how you are portraying Christianity and Jesus. You are not setting a good example.
  • Obama lies about the Fair Tax
Obama lies about the Fair Tax

Obama states on his website The Fair Tax hurt the cashflow of low-income families and individuals, as they would have to deal with an extra 23% rise in the cost of their purchases instead of a 7.65% withholding from their paycheck.
Not True: Under the FairTax Even a person
with a zero percent income tax rate today must pay payroll taxes on the first dollar they earn and also pay hidden federal taxes in the prices of everything they buy completely untaxing the poor.
Obama FairTax is designed to encourage people to save money instead of spend it since the tax would raise the "price" of spending money compared to saving it.

True not True: The FairTax will tax every dollar of accumulated wealth in the most efficient way possible – when it is spent. Tax shelters, loopholes, or other gimmicks to shield large wealth from taxation will be a thing of the past. Meaning the Wealthy will be truly taxed more because they spend more and have more than the poor.
Obama Third, it removes an important incentive for home buying buy raising the cost on older homes than newer homes.
An Excessive Lie: The FairTax makes home ownership more affordable because used homes are totally untaxed, and three out of four
Homebuyers buy used homes. For new and used homes, the FairTax does not tax the earnings used to pay mortgages, interest rates will be far lower under the FairTax, and a homebuyer can save for a down payment faster than under current law.
    Here is the Kicker..

Obama said Americans are not really at the level of economic diversity and "understanding" as major corporations.

    Did he say stupid???
Maybe the real money drop, is just a drop in the bucket, for the Federal Government or the Redistribution Fund.
  • Joy of Bradenton
I don't think it's sad at all that Joy is where she is. She's exactly where she belongs--ranting, impotent, and powerless. Good.
  • Obama's WEALTH ENVY Redistribution philosophy:
    Redistribution philosophy:

Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read 'Vote Obama, I need the money.' I laughed.

Once in the restaurant my server had on an 'Obama 08' tie, and again I laughed.

When the bill came I decided not to tip the server, and I explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept.

He stood there in disbelief when I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to the homeless guy outside. Boy, was he pissed.
I went outside, gave the homeless guy the $10, and told him to thank the server inside.

    The homeless guy was grateful.

At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment, I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn.

I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.
  • Neil, as a teacher in northern GA, my viewpoint may be a little slanted. I really believe the biggest problem in this country is public education. Aside from pulling kids away from our Christian heritage, we are teaching them an entitlement mentality. No winners or losers anymore, just "fairness" which is a load of junk. Life has winners and losers, and when winners fail, they get back up and do it again. In school, we teach them that failure is bad. In fact my county just adopted a policy that no grade can be given lower than a 60. So if a child is lazy during class and the parents don't care about helping to change that attitude. We must give a 60 in the name of fairness. I refuse to comply with that, but that's another topic. We teach kids that everyone should have equal results and that's simply not true. We all have equal opportunity, NOT RESULTS. I don't care what your economic status or color of your skin, your entitled to nothing, but you have the possibilites to do anything you want. And as far as the "Christian" thing to do...it would be to help others. And I don't know of a single poor person that has ever started a charity. Good people use their wealth for good, and greedy jerks use it for personal gain only. God will judge the actions, NOT ME. Just my two cents.
  • Rich pay their fair share Under the Fair Tax
the question of "getting the rich" when it comes to paying tax. When the income tax was first passed it promoted as a get the rich tax with less than 1% paying income tax. We have seen how that one has evolved.

The failure of the regressive argument penalizing the poor is lost in the fact that the rich spend a lot more than the poor. As a result under a consumption tax they pay their "fair share" of taxes.

Further for a robust economy one has to encourage investment. A politician cannot both talk about penalizing the corporation for excess profits and then talk about creating jobs.

Government cannot create jobs. Each new job created by government is a tax and must be paid by tax revenues.

Only the corporation can create jobs and grow an economy. Remember the Soviet Union collapse -

all the jobs in the Soviet Union were created by government - no wonder they went bankrupt.
  • Boortz fans are not rich class of society!
    By David @ 12/01/08 09:11:04

Your comments are typical of Boortz fans, would suggest you learn to spell a little better, it might help you in your goal of becoming rich, wealthy! But then most of Boortz's fans are not rich, wealthy, he appeals to a much lower class of society! In fact his fans are poor "Boortz want a be's"!
  • "Wealth Envy" overstated
Boortz likes to rant about "wealth envy" and often implies it is a dominant theme that shapes all matters of a person's politics and worldview. For example, those advocating pro-environmental policies are supposedly motivated not by concern for the air, water, or our planet, but instead by "wealth envy". I happen to believe that most people accept their position in the socioeconomic pecking order and realize that their financial standing is due in large part to raw intelligence, the investment they have made or not made in education, their interpersonal and networking skills, and the choices they have made in the so-called "work-life balance" equation. My wife and I are probably in the upper 2 to 3% of the income distribution; I rarely if ever spend time "envying" the top 1 percentile, but frankly I sometimes am slightly envious of those who made a conscious decision to forego the "corporate fast track" in favor of a more fulfilling family life and more time for leisurely pursuits.

    Chriatian,

You call yourself a christian but your interruption of the Bible is sadly wrong. It doesn't say that if you rich you will go to hell. I know plenty of rich people who are amazing christians and use there wealth to further the kingdom of God.

    Please keep your comments factual

One more thing please define the word greed! you can't do it because what one man deems his needs is not what another man deems his. I desire a higher level of living than others. I use my money to support orphanages in Albania. If i didn't have the desire to be "greedy" in your words then some kids wouldn't have shoes on their feet.

How sad that the truth is so vilified by you. Your comments suggest it is nobler to keep your mouth shut and go hungry than to speak the truth and eat well. Re-read your Bible. The Lord has promised abundance to those who work. Those who don't starve. Rich hoarders may equal camels, but those who give with a charitable heart shall be seen with favor. Using the government to force someone to give up their wealth is not charity, it's stealing. Guess those 10 Commandments don't apply to Gubmint?
  • Wealth envy
As a person who has no true accumulated wealth (well, I consider my Honda 750 Ace Shadow to be priceless, but that's another website)I have to say that the wealth envy I DO see is nauseating. How much is enough? For some, billions may never be enough. But if they work hard for it, who am I to tell them they owe me anything? For me, enough to make the vig on my own little Kingdom, my 1500 square foot house, tuck a little away for when I'm to physically frail to work and to pay off my toys (what few I own) is plenty good enough. The "Rich" can have at it.
Get over it people. The bottom line (excuse the pun) of the American Dream is to pursue wealth and happiness on your own, not to be driven there by hitchhiking on the backs of those who want more and so work more.
The people who are truly in need through no fault of there own are as rare as hen's teeth. As a former boozer/druggie/loser I can guarantee that 90% of the "poor" that I ever saw were there of their own accord. Tough noogies.
  • Wealth Envy
My husband and I are not wealthy, we are comfortable and that is just fine with me. I have no desire to be rich. We are smart with the money we do have and do not feel the need to have all the material things that so many feel they can not live without. I do not compare my life with the lives of other people, I am content with the things I have and the choices I have made.

if her daughter is any kind of skilled CPA, she should pull down a pretty good income. maybe even be a partner. i wonder where the threshold of Joy's definition of "greedy" starts.

    WHO IS JOHN GALT?
  • I really do not understand these people
Neal, I am twenty years old and a student at Georgia Southern University where I am studying construction management and will graduate early with a 3.8 GPA. I have worked very hard for the entire time that I have been down here and ever since I have been able to work. I have never made any serious money, having so far topped out at 12 dollars an hour, but I have never been upset at the "rich" for being just that. When I see those who have had success, I see them as a model for me to follow and strive to be like them, not hate them and try to tear them apart. Those who call and write into your show continue to puzzle me as to why they think the way they do. I guess that work ethics in this country have gone the way of the dinosaur, as most people I have met here and most grown men I have worked with, fail to have the drive and willingness to sacrifice to become successful. Like I said, they want to be successful, but aren’t willing to work as hard or as long to get that success and this is what puzzles me so often.
  • wealth envy?
I find this comment, interesting, I have never envied the wealthy, as a christian, I pity them mostly, as I do those who are on the opposite end, in extreme poverty, both need pity, but the wealthy, rich, are sad as well, since bible parable of the rich man whom came to Jesus wanting to follow him, but when told to give/re-distribute his wealth to the poor, he got sad, unable to do this he went away! And the other interesting comment on rich in bible was how hard it will be for a rich man to enter the kindgdom of heaven, as hard as a camel going thru the eye of a needle! Guess if one is rich, arrogant, one might fool ones self into thinking, believing all these false prophets/televangelists preaching the prosperity christian doctrine, that god wants us to be rich, wealthy, when in fact wealth, or being rich is more fate than anything, sure some get rich by being greedy, arrogant, one does not get rich merely by being a nice guy, look at the hate radio icons, Boortz, Ingraham, Oreilly, Hannity & Limbaugh, they all are wealthy, rich, made their wealth selling and being purveyors of hate, racism, bigotry, cannot say I envy them at all, since on judgment day they likely fit the category of the blind biblical goats whom Jesus will not know, and God the father will not look upon as they go the lake of fire to debate for all eternity how the means justified their end!
