THE GREAT UNWASHED

Never mind that the new Visitors Center in Washington DC cost the taxpayers $621 million.  Oh and that was ONLY $550 million more than the project was originally supposed to cost.  Not to mention the fact that it was supposed to open three years ago .. but it was a government operation.  What do you expect?  I definitely want to put these people in charge of my healthcare and my retirement plan.

Anyway for Senator Harry Reid that $621 million was worth it.  You know why?  Because now he doesn't have to smell the BO from you, the great unwashed, who paid for the darn thing.

He says, "My staff tells me not to say this, but I'm going to say it anyway ... In the summer because of the heat and high humidity, you could literally smell the tourists coming into the Capitol. It may be descriptive but it's true."

Leave it to Harry Reid to talk about how tourists smell.  You see, in his home state of Nevada they have a dry heat and people don't sweat and smell as much.  Perhaps he would like to move back there?

So now we have shelled out $621 million to make sure that the tourists have air conditioning and aren't offending Harry Reid.  They also have access to bathrooms and souvenirs.

Maybe the gift shop should capitalize on this one ... sell t-shirts in the souvenir shops: "Helping tourist smell better for just $621 million!"

What others are saying

  • Boortz, you hipocrite!
    Boortz,
Every time you broadcast from Orlando, you talk about the fat, disgusting tourists. I think you may have mentioned the same types visiting WSB a time or two as well (though not as often as you mention the buxom blondes). Harry Reid, while speaking inappropriately, was speaking the truth. Visitors to the swampland that is our nation's capitol probably are sweaty and smelly! It was a crass comment, but not entirely untrue.
  • what's that smell?
Harry, I don't think that smell is coming from the tourists, I believe the Madame Speaker just farted!
  • Smell Reid
Maybe we need to check how he smells it might becoming from his office or Congress, Boy the media sure is keeping this on quite he owes the American people and appolagie. wake up america this is you Congress man saying this about you America say somthing back do not be quite.
  • Smell
You know as a United States citizen i take offense too what Harry Reid had to say,The balls of that pompas a!! , Who where the jerks that voted to put him there and why should we allow him to talk to Amerians like that. If you don't like it leave. He must smell like Roses is that what it is. People wake up say somthing and do not allow him to get away with those comments.
  • non-sequitor what-if
Was there a reason the CVC was opened one month AFTER the election? Had it opened one month BEFORE the election would the embarassment have influenced the election?
  • Li'l Harry & the Grear Unwashed
Poor Harry!... but think how bad it is for the poor Capitol tourists having to smell the 535 (er, 536--sorry Elenor) crooks decomposing.

Betcha the Capitol Visitor's Center cost more than the Capitol.
  • Smell
The smell Harry complains about doesn't come from the people visiting, it comes from Congress itself!!!
  • Response to AWK
    AWK:

The point is that this project was almost 800% over Budget. If someone that worked for me was over-budget by 800%, I would immediately post a job opening on careerbuilder.com. You cannot throw the cost of the war into this because it has no relation to this specific project; however, I am not saying that the costs have been excusable.

It's ridiculous to me that anyone in their right mind could make excuses for this lack of fiscal responsibility. Then again, I guess it's reflective of the world we live in and the current crisis that we are in....Live beyond your means, it's not your fault!
  • Reid has done NOTHING to help tourists smell better.
The T-Shirts shouldn't say, "Helping tourist smell better for just $621 million!"

Instead, they should read, "Thanks for the $621 Million, Stinkers! Now, keep your distance!"
  • Reid says "we the people" stink.
Was Reid referring to the D.C. locals, out of town tourists or both? Could be alittle racism here. Imagine if a Republican was to make such a ignorant arrogant statement. The MSM would have used that as a lead story.
  • Locating the Smell
Things that stink: old sandals, dreadlocks/dirty hair, unwashed armpits, old Grateful Dead T-shirts, cheese and/or egg salad sandwiches...
all things prized by liberal hippies. Reid's own folks!

Nice, Harry. Now call Ted Kennedy a fat cripple, and Hillary a bull-dyke.
  • Level of discourse
Lance, you may not like Harry Reid, but perhaps you could be a little more sophisticated in your articulation than calling him a "worthless piece of trash". And, Joyce, you call him an "idiot". Yessir, we've got a real high-level discussion of the issues going on here. And by the way, I think Saxby Chambliss is a poopy head.
  • overbudget and late
While it is true that the project went way over budget and ran way late, it should be noted that this was not a failing of the buracracy. According to a friend who works for the Archetect of the Capital (bean counter too), the costs and delays are due to congress keep adding things like gift shops and dining rooms and other assorted crap that was not included in the original plans. Just so you know its your elected reprentatives who are responsable....
  • The great unwashed
It doesn't have to be that way. Teddy Roosevelt built the Panama Canal on time and under budget and at the time it was the largest construction project in the world. We just need more leaders like TR.
  • The great unwashed
I wonder how long it will be until we commoners will no longer be allowed into the Capitol building itself. The more equal pigs will be in the farmhouse while the rest of us farm animals will be restricted in the ($621M) barn.
  • Dingy Harry Reid
Dingy Harry has the same elitist attitude as the French ruling class did prior to the revolution. When the Messiah deploys the 20,000 federal troops for internal "security" [read: protect the U.S. ruling class from angry, roving mobs following the coming bailout-induced currency collapse], mealy-mouth Reid will need at least a full brigade to protect him. He had better hope that these troops will actually protect him instead of uphold their oath to defend the Constitution and either arrest him or shoot him when he tries to run..."Let them eat cake!" (or issue them govt.-furnished deodorant)
  • Hellooooo?
He doesn't listen to his staff and he doesn't listen to his constituents. Who does he listen to? What a crappy representative; vote the bum out of office and repeal the 16th!
  • Worthless Harry
Reid is a worthless piece of trash. Do us all a favor Harry and schedule that lobotomy ASAP!!
  • Member in Good Standing of the Great Unwashed
Talk about a campaign ad that just wrote itself.

The cheapest campaign for the US Senate, ever.

Harry is up for reelection in 2010.

    What a tool.

    Your toast Dingy Harry.

    Smell ya later.

    tahDeetz
  • War vs Visitor Center
I think you are comparing oranges to apples there.

Reid is an idiot. Just goes to show what he thinks of voters and visitors. But he LOVES illegals!
  • Cost overruns
This fiasco sounds like the visitors center that was built in the 90's at Hoover Dam. It was like 9 years late and COST MORE THAN THE DAMN DAM COST...
  • aroma challenged people
    Hey....somebodies deoderant isn't working, I know it can't be me....I don't wear any.
  • The cost is about 2 days of the Iraq War
So this thing cost $621 million? Depending on the source you read, the cost of the Iraq War is between $200 and $400 million per day. Look, this visitors center may indeed be a big government boondoggle, but I'll reserve final judgment until I visit it. I am willing to give it a "pass" because this is the nation's capitol we're talking about . . . one of (if not the) world's most important symbols of freedom and goodness. People from all over the world visit Washington and the capitol, and I think it is valid to want to give them an experience that contributes to their positive feeling about America. Admittedly, you do have to be careful about the "slippery slope" of saying ". . . but this project's special", but maybe this one is, and maybe one should reserve judgment until one sees it. There is a lot of much more blatant "government waste" than this example.
  • the great unwashed
if a republican said this the media would have a lynch party ready
  • Harry Reid
Sen. Reid may want to check the direction of the wind. The smell is probably coming from inside the Capitol building. Considering the lack of activity in the Senate it is possible that decay has set in.

Harry, pull your head out of your anal cavity and take a look around you.
