Iran wants to work with neighboring Arab countries to build nuclear power plants.

Now that Hillary will be Secretary of State, the Washington Post wants the governor of New York to appoint Bill Clinton to replace her in the Senate.  Oh yeah ... let's hold our breaths.

How are things looking in the Minnesota Senate race?  Franken is still trying to steal the thing ... but that doesn't seem to be working out too well for him.

Let's put the bailout into historical perspective ... yeah, that's a lot of money.

On Barack Obama's transition website, you can share your stories of how you have "given back" to your community.  Don't you just love that phrase?

Paul Krugman of the New York Times says that the reason the New Deal failed was because it didn't spend ENOUGH money.

The United Auto Workers union made a public plea yesterday for your tax dollars to save their over-inflated salaries and pension plans.

Legislators in Connecticut (all Democrats) want to get into the business of using your tax dollars to subsidize local newspapers.

Chris Matthews may be the next mainstream media hack to get involved in politics.  Well .. it's either that or try to become a radio talk star.

The National Black Republican Association wants Barack Obama to apologize for the Democrat's 150-year history of racism.

A DRT story where the homeowner managed to wrestle the gun away from the men who came to rob him, and he shot them both.  Unfortunately only one was DRT.

Just as a little reminder, a recent Rasmussen poll found that 68% of American adults prefer stores to show signs saying "Merry Christmas" rather than "Happy Holidays."

New York City public transportation will write a note for your boss or teacher to prove that you were late because of the Subway system.  Wait, how much is this costing the tax payers?

You can thank your tax dollars for a $6 million tutoring facility at the University of Illinois ... that can only be used by athletes.

Government stupidity on many levels: A clerical error on a federal grant application cost the city of Denver the funding needed to run its program to protect kids from lead poisoning.

Researchers have found that places where individualism is valued over the collective good also tend to be places where a lot of beer is consumed.  Damn that individualism!

What others are saying

  • "Giving Back" to the community
Here is what I posted to the Obama site regarding giving back. I am sure it will never see the light of day on his site but I may end up getting visited by and IRS Agent.

I have never given back anything. That phrase implies that I have been given something and not worked for it. I hate to tell you but I have WORKED or everything I have nothing has been given to me. So if nothing has been given to me I am pretty sure by defintion it cannot be give back. That being said I do all kinds of things to better the community. I did not have children out of wedlock, I take care of my children and family and don't expect the goverment to do it for me. I work two jobs and my wife works four jobs to that we can have things we want but don't really need (this helps the economy).

My wife and I put money away for our retirement so that we don't have to live off of the government when we retire. I have a very healthly life insurance policy so that if something should happen to me my wife and daughter could live without the need of a government handout.

We do not borrow money that we cannot afford to pay back. We invest in mutual funds, IRAs and 401k's in order to make sure that economy continues to be strong. We buy lots of cool toys in order to make sure that the people that make the toys have jobs and can pay for their own families.

We pay for our own health insurance so that if something happens to us or our children that we can afford the best healthcare. Actually my wife had melanoma skin cancer about 7 years ago and because we were responsbile and had excellent healthcare insurance which we paid for by going without neat stuff like big tvs, cell phones and cable she is alive today.

Isn't it amazing the good you can do for society just by making smart decision and taking care of yourself.
  • United Auto Workers
Loaning 25 billion of our tax dollars to the big 3 car makers makes no sense with the current wages and benefits packages that are currently in place. The car makers are paying out too much money to retired employees who they get $0 dollars in return for. Unless something changes drastically, they will be coming to us again for more money.

It will be interesting to see what the car companies present to Congress on how they are going to use this money. I am just not very optimistic at this point.
  • DRT stories
Keep up the DRT (Dead Right There) stories! It makes me smile every time a home invader fails to live through the commision of a home invasion!
  • Tutoring Center
The article stated that the center was funded by the athletics department. If my understanding of university budgets is correct (using Virginia Tech as my example) then the operating budget for the university (which has taxpayer funding) is a separate entity from the athletics department, which cannot use any taxpayer funds for buildings, activities, or operational costs. Athletics departments raise their money through sponsorships, tv & radio deals, donors, and otjher fund-raising efforts completely separate from any taxpayer funds. Or at least that's how it is here in Virginia.
  • "Giving Back" to the community
    Neal,

I actually went to the website and filled out the form about how I 'give back' to the community. Here's what I said:

I have given back to my community by working hard, and taking personal responsibility for supporting myself and my family, so as not to become a burden on my fellow citizens by relying on the government for help.

I have invested so as to provide capital to companies so that they can grow and provide jobs to my fellow citizens that will provide them with the means to support themselves and their families without having to take government handouts of money that was taken from other peoples' pockets.

Until my own health precluded continuing, for years I was a regular donor of blood and blood platelets, so as to literally help save lives.

I have been a teacher and stressed to my students the importance of integrity, personal responsibility and accountability in all that they do.
  • Illinois Tutor Center
Perhaps a tad hasty alleging that the center was paid for by taxpayers. It may be on the backs of the football and basketball teams.

These two programs frequently generate $40 to $50 million each year. That does not include donations from allums many of whom would not contribute a dime without getting tickets. They can't pay the athletes in cash. I don't begrudge them a nice place to study.
  • Train Delay Notes
What a silly way to do it... the Chicago Metra trains have had late notes for years. If the main Chicago station gets word that a train is late or delayed, it prints up a bunch of generic "late" notices and leaves them in the station for commuters to pick up, with a number for the boss to call, and you tell your boss which train number you are so they can verify themselves. It costs about as much as black-and-white photocopies (cut into quarter sheets).
  • "Giving Back" to the community
Neal, we should take advantage of this. Anybody who owns a business should post a story about how they "gave back" to the community by starting their business and employing people. I can't think of a better way to "give back" to the community. So... any takers?
