NIMBY ALERT

Last week we had a F/A-18D Hornet crash into a neighborhood in San Diego, just outside of Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. A man who lost his family in the crash, an immigrant from Korea, said that he didn't blame the pilot for the accident. Now there is an admirable man.

But the rest of his neighbors aren't being as forgiving. For years, there has been a battle between the Miramar Air Station and the residents of its surrounding neighborhoods. These people are what you would call NIMBYs - Not In My BackYard. And this crash last week has really re-ignited the NIMBYs of San Diego to get rid of Miramar Marine Corps Air Station.

The residents are saying that this crash is the latest reminder of the "longtime noise and safety concerns arising from operations at Miramar." They have also complained about the traffic congestion. Environmental groups are upset with the bases' "history of industrial pollution." Sally Marks, a San Diego resident since 1978, says, "The Marines are decent people, and it seems un-American to gripe about them during wartime. But having hundreds of helicopters and jets in the middle of an urban area is a recipe for discord and disaster." And then there is resident Gayle Aruta (another woman) who says, "These types of jets have to be moved. It's not safe, these things flying over schools and children ... How many people have to die?" That, my friends, is the profile of a NIMBY.

A few things for Gayle and her NIMBY crowd should remember .. Miramar has been around since before you were born. Its origins date back to 1917. Not to mention that when moving into the area, there is no secret that you are moving near a military base .. you have to sign a contract that disclosed those inconvenient facts..

Oh and then there is that little thing the NIMBYs forget - the economic impact of the base. Did you know that the Pentagon spends $15.5 billion in the San Diego area for things like salaries, equipment repairs and construction? That's a lot of capital being pumped into the area. This means that San Diego is the top recipient of military funding compared to any other county in the nation.

What others are saying

  • Re: Dan's Comment
Sadly Dan, we do live in a world where we let the small "offended" groups decide what is best for everyone else.

I don't understand why the NIMBY's are crying now. Maybe they just have nothing better to do with their time. Have there been other accidents? If not, maybe they should wait for a few more to start saying the base is a threat to their children. One accident, however tragic, is not enough to warrant that kind of change. And why would you want to push that on to someone else, to hurt someone else's children like that?
  • Pilot
Alright, I know I will get trashed by others on this site, but, I have wondered since I first heard of the wreck why the pilot didn't go down with the plane. It is my understanding that Blue Angel pilots always go down with the plane when it is crashing in a populated area. The pilot tries to crash the plane in an area with the least chance for loss of life other than his own. I have tryed to find details of the crash, and seem to come up empty. I'm not blaming the pilot. But with the information I have, I must wonder why the pilot ejected from a plane that eventually crashed and killed four people on the ground. The military makes mistakes just like any other organization. Some people rush to an unfair judgment when mistakes happen and little facts are known. Others race to an unfair defense in the same situations. I feel both are equally bad. I support the military and the people who serve in it, but when things go wrong, they should be held accountable.
  • Completely Agree with NIMBYs
I'm from Central Texas and I completely agree with the NIMBYs. The Miramar Air Station should immediately be moved -- from San Diego to Central Texas.
  • Miramar
I was a ground crew member of a Top Gun school pilot from our squadron in the early 70's.
Miramar was out in the middle of nowhere and thought the government had bought up most of the surrounding land just to keep out the home builders.
It is the same where ever you go, SeaTac airport at Seattle was surrounded by undeveloped land and a gas station or two, now it a city and they complain about the noise.
  • Miramar
Bet they wouldn't mind the jets flying over their house if they were flying in to save their asses!
  • MCAS Miramar
I've lived and worked within 5 miles of the base for the last 20 years. These whiners ARE NOT representitive of the neighbors and businesses near the base. With the many ships, carriers and subs homeported at the Naval Station and Pt. Loma,Navy Helo s at NAS North Island, SEALS at the Amphib Base, Marines at Miramar,Camp Pendelton and the Recruit Depot, I think San Diego County has the most Military Personnel in the US. 98% of the San Diegans are very supportive of them. Don't let 3 or 4 idiots quoted in the paper speak for the vast, vast majority. San Diego is proud to be a 'Navy town'.
  • Luke AFB
Read a funny story in a local paper about a man named Wolf who bought a house and a week later found out it was at the end of a runway where the fighter take off and land for their training flights. Sounds like someone didn't do their homework. I live in Buckeye and they fly over daily and sometimes at night too. Like someone ahead of me said. That's the sound of freedom. I can't believe how many people buy near a pig farm and scream bloody murder when the wind changes direction. An adage my mother used comes to mind. You made your bed, now lie in it.
  • Miramar
I was stationed at Miramar during the BRAC period when the Marines now stationed at Miramar were previously stationed at MCAS El Toro. El Toro is located in Orange Co about 1 hour north. I lived with jets and yes they are loud. My old squadron operated out of the same hangar as VMFAT-101 in the mid 90's. El Toro caught hell from the old folks in Leisure World for years about noise. In the end they got what they wanted but now there is a big empty airport where before there was a pretty big community.

We relocated to Miramar in Aug of 94. We moved into the Top Gun hangar and were pretty much the only Marines on base for a while. What do I mean? The Marines have already relocated at great expense. They are in Miramar because Camp Pendelton is just to the north and San Diego naval Station is just to the south. It is the ideal location. And they are not going anywhere.

One last note, the F/A-18D is a two seted all weather night attack aircraft. The one in the picture is either an A version which is single seat fighter or a C version which is a trainer.
  • Miramar Marine Air Station
Most people do not realize the impact of the military until the military shows them. I would suggest that the Commander of the air station do two things. First, in Jan recommend that all military and civilian personnel pay for things with 1 dollar coins if they can find them or else purchase a rubber stamp and stamp each paper bill they use with something like Compliments of the US military; Second, in February, put the city of San Diego off limits to all military personnel and then bus those personnel to towns other than San Diego for the 3 days after pay day. Fort Bragg did this many years ago when the town of Fayetteville started to turn against the military and they have been quiet ever since.
  • Neal should close the mortgage deals in the area!
I've heard Neal talk about closing residential house loans, having a tape recorder running and saying to the buyer "Do you realize that if you don't pay the mortgage, you WILL be kicked out of the house?" "Yes"

Also ask "Do you realize this is an area near a military base and airport, and there may be low-flying, loud airplanes and helicopters flying in and out at any time of day or night, and one could even crash on your house?"

I recall maybe early '80's a jet from Dobbins AFB crashed into an apartment complex in the I75/I285 area. That area has done nothing but grow in population ever since, and there was even an recent air show at Dobbins!
  • GAyle Artura
A few min of research located teh email address for Gayle Artura, she is teh Graduate Coordinator @ UCSD. Respectful email pointing out that Miramar, formly Camp Kearney has been an poerating militry air field since 1917, probably would help her understand the military was there first and that if anyone needs to go it is HER!

  • NIMBY
I'm a retired Marine and have lived by Marine Air Stations most of my adult life. I love the sounds of both Helo and Fast Movers. Sounds Of Freedom. If you don't like it you should move.
  • NIMBYs
Let's pay all Miramar employees (active duty, civil service and contract employees) in $2 bills for a few paychecks.
  • NIMBY
A note to the Whiners. Just shut up. The base was there when you moved there, so maybe you are the one who should take action against the Navy. Move some place where there will be no planes or heliocopters to bother you!
  • Miramar
Miramar Naval Air Station was there long before housing was. We purchased a home in Mira Mesa in 1970 when all there was behind us was desert!!! Had to drive 15 miles to buy groceries. These people that are complaining are NUTS!!! If they don't like the noise let them move. It never bothered us in the least.
  • Nimbys
I happen to live in the landing path of Dobbins ARB up here in Marietta and there are multiple aircraft flying over every day. Funny thing is, it's become just a part of life--no worse than the traffic driving by on the road or any other of the numerous noises one might here. To me, it's a small sacrifice considering the enormous benefit we receive from these men and women being able to properly fly and train on a regular basis--preserving their status as the best-trained air and naval forces in the world.

Furthermore, kudos to the Korean man involved in the Miramar accident. While what happened to his family is a terrible tragedy, it's nice to see that he doesn't blame the pilot or the base for what happened. On the other hand, it's kind of sad to see a Korean immigrant with more pride and respect for the U.S. military than lifelong American citizens.
  • They Made Their Bed
Zero sympathy for these people. Unfortunately Miramar has to take the heat for stupid decisions by housing developers and homeowners over the last 40 years. I hope the base stays, but I wouldn't be surprised if the crying suburbanites get their way. Perhaps Ms. Aruta should move to the desert! Consider this San Diego County, which impacts the economy more? Property tax from University City or jobs and capital from Miramar?
  • Should have rode it in
When I was stationed in Tucson, there was an F4 pilot who had engine problems and he chose to ride it in rather than risk injuries on the ground. There were little league games going on at the time.
  • Move Miramar
They need to move Miramar to NAS Kingsville TX. King ranch on three sides of the base. Maybe 4 houses near the base. Plenty of space. Plus everytime we see a plane flying we give it the proper salute. The sound of Freedom!
  • Agrre @ Lee
Get these people away from the base. They can abandon there homes and go away since they made the choice to move there they can make the choice to move out btu for saftey reasons they need to be forced out and receive no compesation.
  • Jet Noise
I love the sound of jet noise. Especially when it has Stars and Bars on wings and fuselage. I live near the Hooch and quite often there are AC-130s flying low over the river and I love the noise.

    It smells like FREEDOM!
  • NIMBY's
I say the Navy should shut down the base, but keep ownership of it. Then let these whiners see what a local economic collapse feels like. Chances are that the ones who bawled the loudest about the base will be the first to leave. (They'll be the least able to muster the guts to tough out an economic turndown.) Once they're gone the Navy can re-open the base.
  • NIMBY
You may recall the left wing bureaucrats pushing to get the Navy and Marine Corps to stop using Vieques Island, Puerto Rico as a bombing range.

Well, it happened, and then when the Navy packed up to leave Roosevelt Roads,
The same people go upset that the departure would kill the local economy.

There is NO FREE LUNCH! EVER!
  • Can't have it both ways
Check out prices for real estate around and in the flight path of airports. There is a reason you got such a great deal on that house. Yet we always hear people complaining about noise and safety issues and asking (demanding) that the government steps in.
  • NIMBY
It really amazes me that poeple like this move into an area then decide that what has been there for many years before them now has to go. Why do they move into these areas in the first place since they know what is already there?
  • I agree with the residents
The government should take this seriously. There is a safety factor to consider with all these people living near the base.

I say establish a perimeter around the base where everyone has to move out.
  • Nimby
They did not have to move to the area. They could have stayed in the place where they were before. I don't feel sorry for them at all. In fact, the government should make them move. This way they would not be in the way of jets that land and take off from there. The pressure forced the Navy to move the Top Gun school to Fallon Nv, which made that area boom
  • Nimby's
Who was first....Miramar or the neighborhood. People make an educated (probally from a govt school) and a large investment. THEY have the burden of making sure of their surroundings prior to the sale. It's just like neighborhood who build by racetracks and then complain about the noise....
  • Hey Mrs. NIMBY - Shut UP!!!
I'm sorry if I seem a bit insensitive, but if those people moved next to the airbase, then they have no right to complain about the noise. As for the safety factor, as horrible as the accident was, how often is there an accident like this? Rarely. So, if these people don't like the fact that there is an Airbase close by, then call a real estate agent, and then go get yourself a Uhaul truck and get the hell out!
  • Living near Miramar
The people there should realize there are other areas the Govmit could choose who would welcome the noise & economic activity. Home of the Blue Angels, Pensacola, Florida comes to mind
  • NIMBYs
Right on, Neal. We have the same problem here in Va. Beach. Only its with Naval Air Station Oceana. One of my favorite bumper-stickers around here is "I *heart* jet noise", a direct slap at these NIMBY idiots.
  • Nimby Alert
Here, Here Neil. I've said the same thing for years for homes near our local airports, military bases, hospitals, schools, etc. Many of the homes were "affordable" because they were near these facilities. I welcome the sound of aircraft and enjoy the influx of their economic impact!

    Thanks Neil.
