HOW WOULD YOU FEEL ABOUT A NATIONAL HEALTH CORPS?

Tom Daschle is heading up Barack Obama's efforts to bring universal healthcare to our country.  One of the ideas being thrown around right now is the concept of a National Health Corps ... like the Peace Corps.  Only this one would be for medical students and nursing students who would "go straight back into the community and give back to their country."  Okay .. that is twice within the past week that we have heard the team of the President-elect use this phrase "give back."  Doctors and nurses have chosen to go into a profession so that they can earn an income and make a living.  Some will choose to help out in their community and that is fine.  But when it comes to healthcare, the term "give back" assumes that doctors owe their services to their community and country. The whole "give back" idea presumes that whatever you may have was given to you, not worked for, not earned, and that there is some requirement that you give some of it back.   They did not work for it but they are required, by the government, to provide a portion of their life to someone else.  In this case it would be healthcare.

Anyway, a National Health Corps would kill two birds with one stone for Obama: universal healthcare and mandatory community service.  We'll see how far this idea goes.

What others are saying

  • The Corps has been around since the 70's
The National Health Service Corps will pay for up to four years of medical school, plus a small stipend, in return for a commitment to serve an area iddentified as having too few primary care physicians.

Haven't heard any comlplaints about it yet, and they are celebrating their 35th year...
  • Giving Back
I was once told "Don't hold strong opinions about things you don't understand."

That being said, I have family members, friends, etc. who have "given back" in their roles as medical providers. Some have chosen the military. Some have chosen loan repayment supplementation/forgiveness from rural communities. This is the giving back that I can get behind. What Daschle should say is that these professionals who have given up a decade of their life to become proficient at what they do should be rewarded and valued for their dedication.

But again, this is the difference between those with conservative values and those with liberal values. Acts of charity where both parties benefit (in this case sub-standard wages paired with loan forgiveness) is much better than taxation. There is a human element that far too many are willing to ignore...mandating "giving back" or taxes or slavery or whatever you call it kills the human spirit and makes the providers bitter.
  • Give Back? Hogwash
My sister is a highly skilled cancer doctor. She just retired at the age of 56. She didn't even finish her residency until she was 30, and she put herself through school (with the help of her husband, school loans, etc).

What does she get for being a "lucky one"? Because she makes good money, she lost all of her standard deductions and exemptions for her income tax returns. She has no debt and no fancy investments that reduce her tax burden. So she pays the full rate. I don't consider it fair she doesn't even get her personal exemptions and standard deductiosn like everyone else. That is not equal taxation.

Then medicare and medicaid. She usually gets only 7 to 10% of the BILLED amount for a Medicaid patient. We figured out that works out to about $7 per hour that she gets paid hardly anything to treat an indigent patient for their cancer. This doesn't even cover her malpractice insurance for that particular patient.

How is this not "giving back" since the government refuses to pay the other 93% of the cost to treat this patient? About half of her uninsured/Medicaid patients are truly poor and could not truly afford the health insurance premiums, and the other half were just too selfish and/or lazy to pay for their own coverage, instead relying on the system to cover their costs. It is very frustrating that their own irresponsibility then gets imposed on my sister.

She retired recently rather than face nationalized health care. But here is the kicker, she voted for OBAMA because she is one of those high income liberals. Go figure. That is the ultimate irony.

" Additionally, I believe at some points, us medical professionals would like to get some sleep, have some fun, read a book, get a girlfriend etc. "

Let me tell you that I was a resident before the 80-hour work week, and I had plenty of time to do the above. The idea that medical school and residencies are this horrific time and poeple should feel sorry for med students / residents is nonsense. I went through the whole system, had an absolute blast, and would do it again if necessary.

However, in the interest of discussion, I do agree that no doctor/nurse should be forced into gov't labor. If this were to happen, the rate of new doctors would PLUMMET in several years, and our profession would be much like that of teachers (sorry, don't mean to offend any that may be reading this).
  • Red Hot Mad
I am a 4th year medical student and right now I PAY $5.40 per hour to work. (Of course, that is for a 40 hour work week; lucky for me the hourly rate goes down the more hours you work!) To make things even more fun, after I graduate I get to work in Manhattan for 3 years, making $48k per year. That comes out to less than minimum wage if I was paid by the hour. Somehow I'll have to pay back my $120,000 in loans at the same time. Of course, I try to look on the bright side and see this pitiful salary as a $9 per hour raise; at least I can finally stop paying to work.
I have a friend who graduated college the same year as me who is making greater than $55k per year, and he has been doing that for almost 4 years now. How many years will I have to work to cancel out my debt and catch up to his cumulative salary? I don't even want to think about it.
One thing I've noticed during my 2 years in the clinics is that people who have $0 copay tend to not appreciate any of the advice given to them. If you pay for something you will value it more. These same people also come to the doctor every time they have a cough or a stomach ache. Why shouldn't they? It is free after all. People would think twice about wasting the doctors' time on the common cold if there was some consequence attached to the decision.
The healthcare system is complex. If politicians would just leave it the hell alone, it just might stand a fighting chance. But that is a BIG "might".
  • How would you feel ... ?
How would you feel to a poke in the eye with a sharp stick? I thought not. And that's how I feel about government (ANYTHING).
  • It's a Scam
The only thing you are "giving back" is free labor to the government.
  • Cost
I am a medical student and will own about $150k in debt by the time I get my MD. At that point, I will work at a hospital which will pay me 32k per year after taxes on average while working about 80 hours per week, sometimes more until I finish my residency (3-5 years). I believe that averages about $7.50 an hour while paying back our loan amounts, roundabouts. This giving back crap is exactly that... crap. We already give back... alot. I love what I do and I'll do it for next to nothing to become a good doctor, but at some point the collection agency will knock down my door. So, until "sorry, giving back" seems like sufficient payment for the delinquent loans I will politely suggest that Mr. Daschle shut his mouth. Additionally, I believe at some points, us medical professionals would like to get some sleep, have some fun, read a book, get a girlfriend etc. For all the times I've heard that doctors need to be people first, it surprises me that anyone would want us to enter into the workforce so early. Give us some time to LIVE a little so we can at least APPEAR human.
  • Health Care
Time for Doctors to close up shop. Can you imagine what kind of people a National Health Corps would attract? Teachers!
  • Who is going to do this giving back
I dont know who they think is going to be doing this. Where I live they cant find enough nurses even giving 10k signing bonuses.
  • Health Care
When a doctor sets up a practice or works in a hospital to care for patients, isn't that service to the community? Isn't that going "straight back into the community"? Don't politicians tell us that they have chosen public service...for which they are paid?
  • "Given to them"? Yeah right
My sister and my significant other are nursing students at a local college. Between the money spent on their education and all the time and sacrifices they make to focus on that education I know for sure that nothing was "given to them".

Wish that someone would come along and pop the bubble that these liberal nut jobs are living in.
  • Malpractice insurance??
and who is going to pay their malpractice insurance (or is congress going to pass a law saying that they going to be exempt from being sued)? I know doctors who have left the profession due to the cost of insurance.
  • Original idea please!?
I love how the democrats think that they have all these "new" ideas for how to "improve" our country. 1st...We already have the Public Health Service Commissioned Corp, which includes job opportunities with the NIH, CDC, FDA and the Indian Health Service (IHS). I guess the problem with this is that it is VOLUNTARY service. As a future pharmacist I like the idea of having the option for more humble service, but I can also go out an make money if I want. But oh yeah, that is wrong/bad too according to my democrat friends. Shame on me. 2nd...Arg!
  • When was the last time you heard
When was the last time you heard a politician or government bureaucrat talking about them GIVING BACK my tax money?
  • Giving Back
I'll take Daschle's comments about giving back seriously when he forgoes his congressional pension.
  • "Giving Back"
I actually thought of this general idea, but in a free market and positive-for-all approach. We, as taxpayers, could offer to pay for one year of med school in return for one year of service treating those on Medicaid/Medicare or the uninsured. They would get a sub-market salary but have no student loans. This would encourage more students to go into medicine as well, as many stay away simply because of the cost of all those extra years of school. At least this way it is voluntary and the doctors actually do have something to 'give back' because they got something up front to advance their long-term career.
  • What? A 50%+ tax rate isn't enough?
As soon as these new doctors start making real money, at least half of it will be going "back" in the form of taxes, even as they continue to pay for the dozens of years of edcuation to get to that point.

Exactly how much "giving back" is enough?
  • Why do you think it's always politicians talking about "giving back?"
Because they are the ones who never earned a damn thing in their lives! They have made a profession out of leeching off the hard work of others....perhaps they feel a twinge of guilt over this and are projecting onto others.
  • Why single out the medical profession?
How about community service for lawyers too!
  • mandatory community service
This whole mandatory community service smells a whole lot like mandatory servitude which is unconstitutional. Oops, when has the US Constitution stood in the way of the (Socialist)Democrats before?
  • Nat'l Health Corp
A fine example of how detached from reality BHO and the Democrats are.

Med students already "give back to the community" when working their rotations during the last 2 years of med school. Their rigorous studies leave no time for anything else. When they are residents they spend 4 or 5 years, 80+ a week, in the clinics and state hospitals (where the people with no health insurance can already go) for chicken feed pay.

There are already volunteer rescue squads where EMTs and paramedics "give back to the community". There are also free clinics across the country where nurses and other medical professions do volunteer.

As usual, our righteous windbag Barry is just spouting off more BS.
  • Students
The plan is to send out students to the field, STUDENTS. I have taken first aid, do I qualify? If Doctors have problems getting insurance for mailpractice, do we expect students to have it any better.
  • National Health Service Corps
It's called the National Health service corps. You get a small portion of your loans forgiven in exchange for service in underserved (HPSA score - health provided shortage areas) areas of the country. What do you think community health centers are?
  • Give back to the community
"universal healthcare and mandatory community service".....don't we have a Constitutional Amendment that abolished slavery?
  • Give back
I have two nephews that have just finished medical school. One owes 180,000 in student loans and the other 165,000. I have no idea how long it will take them to pay these loans off. The nut cases want students to give back to the community! Many doctors would do so by charging lower rates based on ability of the patient to pay but Federal Law prohibits this. If a doctor agrees to accept Medicare patients he must by law charge the same rates to every patient. He has no choice. So much for affordable health care.
  • Redundant?
Don't we already have the US Public Health Service?

As an added bonus, it's a uniformed service...
  • Already Done
We already have one. It is called the Public Health Service.
  • Go For It
I'm all for this idea if they will add one item. That the "community" help pay for the school loans. Otherwise, it sounds more like punishment.
  • National Health Care
I just caught the last few moments viewing a British Parliament Panel discussion about on CSPAN that discussed the new National Health Care Plan proposed in Britain...Comments were made like “you can’t centralize health care”….”medical professions need to have an incentive to practice”…. "this bill has codified what the current citizens already have available to them and isn't anything new"...."this bill won't reduce costs"...."this bill is as effective as merely replacing the deck chairs on a boat".......

Hold on to your hats boys and girls...this type of discussion is coming to America to a Congressional theatre near you soon…be sure to grab your Coke and Popcorn and hold on to your family jewels!
