The CEO of American Airlines says that any plans for a federal stimulus should include the aviation industry. This includes more spending on runways and air traffic control. The airlines themselves, though, don't seem to be asking for a handout ... yet.

American Airlines CEO Gerald Arpey says, "The airline industry should be certainly at the top of the list of industries that are deserving of economic stimulus as it relates to infrastructure because we have let the infrastructure in aviation deteriorate."

What others are saying

  • From the inside
The AIRLINES dont need to be bailed out. As already stated, let them hang on to their antiquated business models and fail (yes, I AM an airline employee). What money really needs to be spent on are the airports and facilities. Congestion is a huge problem, especially in the Philly/NY areas.

As for "shoddy service" ... I know you people think the airlines dont care, and you're right. I dont give one hoot about you. On the other hand, I'm not going out of my way to see to it you have a bad day. So many factors go into even getting a plane off the ground that its amazing any of them are on time. Weather, maintenance, crew issues (pilots are some of the biggest whiners I have ever met), equipment outages, congestion, ATC delays, etc, etc, etc. Here's a hint ... if we cancel or delay something, there is a damn good reason. Take the bus if you dont like to fly.
  • Airlines business model from 1970s
After Jimmy Carter signed the Airline Deregulation Act, signed into law October 24, 1978, the airlines have never bothered to update their business model. The big guys are still operating with the "hub and spoke" model. The new guys are not operating that way and that's why they're doing better.
Let the airlines fail. New folks will start up and create much more efficient companies.
And for you folks who think that the rural areas won't be served without this current model, keep in mind that entrepreneurs will step in. Don't believe me? Look at Nantucket Island. They have no major airline service but there's plenty of cheap flight to there.
  • one word: Southwest
SOuthwest airlines is doing fine, so it's not the industry or the current economic climate -- it's bad bussines practices that are never changed. In what paralell universe would anyone but a failing business be rewarded for incompetency? Oh yeah .... the government!
  • Steve needs to read
It is called the presentments clause in the constitution. Even if congress passes something, nothing is enacted until the president signs it. You must be a republican that thinks he knows the constitution but probably doesnt even know which article gives congress its powers. I havent heard of a congressional veto in a while so it must all be the president.
  • Um, Stan
What Republicans are doing for big business? Last time I looked the Democrats are in charge of Congress and only they can authorize this money. You must be one of the 65% of Obama voters who didn't know which party controls Congress.
  • Yes
Money should go to the airports and making the sky safer. More useful than giving it to the car industry with unions.
  • Checkbook is open
As if republicans didnt do enough for big businesses, they now are giving away money like it is cake. It is like a random holiday and Bush is the Uncle to any big business. HELP, I made a bad business decisions but did donate to your campaign and we have a tee time on sunday.
  • Airport infrastructure
What happened to the Airport Trust Fund? You know, the one that you and I pay into every time we buy a ticket or a gallon of aviation fuel? I'll tell you, the same thing that happened to Social Security, it was used to offset the shortfalls in the General Fund. That is tantamount to theft, but we never hear about it.
  • Airline bailout?
Bailout the airlines???? After all that we gave them in 2001 and all of the shoddy service that we got back for our troubles? Tell you what, Gerald, how about we give you the same money we gave you and your fellow flying sardine packers back in 2001, MINUS a few "fees" to them? You know, like a fee for every hour a plane is forced to sit on the tarmac through your competence... and a fee for every passenger that gets bumped for overbooking... and a fee for every female passenger that is forced off the plane because she has some curves and doesn't dress like a nun... and a fee for every FEE that you have imposed on the passengers since 2001.

Or better yet, Gerald, why don't you and your fellow flying sardine packers take this downturn like the rest of us have to, lest you start OWING us some of the money that we gave you the last time around!
