How many?  That would be 41.  That's right.  Forty-one states are now begging for taxpayer cash from Washington.

Now I don't know just how they do their budgets in other states .. but I've been watching these clowns work in Georgia for many years.  Here's the Georgia routine.  Every year the legislature passes a budget.  At some point during that fiscal year they may find that tax revenues have exceeded the budget needs.  In other words .. there's some extra money.  So what do the Georgia legislators do when they're faced with this extra cash?  Do they save it?  Do they put it into a huge contingency fund?  Do they cut taxes?  Hardly ... they oink their way back to Atlanta to pass a supplemental budget to spend the extra cash.  The legislators line up like pigs at a trough to get some of that extra money for a playground, band uniforms, a new road or something in their district.  Year after year ... the same thing.

You ought to look at the pension plans these state employees get, not just here in Georgia but across the country.  Far and away better than most private sector plans.  And these pension plans are just the beginnings of wasteful and ridiculous spending.  How about arts programs?  Any government entity that is spending money supporting "artists" who don't have the skill to produce anything that can be sold in the free market should not be marching to Washington to beg for bailout money.

Why is it when times get rough only the people have to look for ways to cut back?  Why is this always just absolutely impossible for government?

What others are saying

  • I have a dream
I have a dream, where all office parties have an open bar!!

It's a bureaucracy that is partially funded by the government. So it makes sense that they inherit some of the wasteful habits of their benefactor. Similar to how children inherit some of the same habits and mannerisms as their parents. ...but does that mean government christmas parties are all open bar? I am suddenly motivated to run for public office!
  • North Carolina
    taxpayers'!!!
    sorry...
  • North Carolina
I have an employee whose wife is a payroll clerk at the local community college. Two weeks ago he informs me that his wife and the other full time staff at this college will all receive a $2000.00 christmas bonus. I couldn't believe my ears. Yesterday he starts ranting that her christmas parties are better than ours because they have an open bar...open bar? I couldn't have heard that correct. Over 200 employees and their spouses boozing it up at taxpayer's expense. Unbelievable.
  • Who ISN'T begging for a bailout?
Forty-one states are tapped out already? Forty-one? Is there a list of the nine that are solvent?
  • Alabama county names new holiday 'Barack Obama Day'
Just when you got a day off.
  • Capt Jack - Who will bail out.....
The FG is already belly up. The Fed is just to stupi to realize it. With a (realistic) federal deficit of about 70 trillion, I would be inclined to say it's time to file chapter 7. Thank You Congress. Thank You Federal Reserve.
  • Welfare State......
Sorry, I forgot to post the clip. Here it is.

A friend was having trouble. I gave her grocery money, used (but good) appliances, used (but decent) clothes, I bought her meals to cheer her up, too. She then asked (actually, hinted) to give her money to buy frivolous items. I did not give her the amount of cash she was "hinting" she needed, figuring it was time she stood on her own two feet. She then became verbally abusive and vicious to me & I don't hang out with this person anymore. This taught me to stop being kind to other people.
  • Welfare State
I clipped this from another blog. It epitomizes how this country has become a Nanny Sam.See if you can identify the liberal.
  • Who will bail out the Federal Government?
When the federal government goes belly up after giving out all our money, who will bail them out? The Chinese?
  • Many people don't realize that many state workers, including many state workers in California, who are eligible for these "great" pensions, have not paid into the Social Security system, and while their pension benefits are higher than Social Security in many cases, they have not paid Medicare taxes. That means when they reach 65, they are paying for their own medical insurance which offsets any pension benefits. Some state employees have lower pensions, but have been paying Social Security and Medicare taxes, but those employees are usually paid below the prevailing wage for the job they do. My husband works for the State of California for about half of what he would get in the private sector, but he loves his job.
  • California
I read that in California, we pay 18 billion for state Medicaid, 56 Billion in WELFARE, and 9 billion in road work. Hmm... I see where Cali can get a stimulus, and it isn't the roads. I know that poor people need SOME help, but when Uncle Arnold can't pay his bills, he needs to stop paying yours first!
  • Begging states
    Grow a garden
  • State Pensions
Yes, the Georgia State Employees do have a farily nice pension (Which is going away for new hires after January 1). But it doesn't offset the lack of pay. Remember, you get what you pay for.

    Keep it level.
  • I hope Arizona's on the list.
We've got a lot of little Mexicans to feed!
  • Voter Ignorance
Our States are supposed to be indipendant entities that support the Federal Government for the common good of all. Once we start down the road to asking for government assistance, because our elected representatives can't do there jobs properly, we give up the independance our forefathers fought and died for. If a state can not manage it's budget it has no right to ask for the rest of the nation to pay for there incompetance. Keep electing represenatives because they promise you the moon and this is what we can expect.
  • States Rights
The governors ought to realize that any money the federal gives to their state will come with restrictions that violate the rights of said state. What happened to the federalism system that's enshrined in our Constitution? Just look at the unconstitutional department of education that dictates to states what they can and cannot do. The states ought to reject all federal money and go back to doing it their own way.
  • Saving?
41 states playing Oliver Twist with each one trying to 'twist' their way to the teat.

As for the government saving...wait, what? That is like russian intelligence, constitutional monarchy, middle east peace, and disaster relief. How I love the real life oxymorons.
