ALL OF THOSE HUNGRY CHILDREN! WHATEVER SHALL WE DO?

As I was perusing the newspapers this weekend I noticed a lot of stories about hungry children.  OK - it's wonderful that so many of you want to help those in need, but I have to throw a little water on this idea that so many children are "going hungry" in this country.

Let's just clear this up.  When the "activists" head out there with their pollsters and start asking questions, one of those questions is something like "Have any of your children complained about being hungry during the last year?"  Now I don't care how much money you make; if you have a child that child is going to say "Mommy, I'm hungry" about once a week.  You tell these survey-takers that your child uttered those words just one time - and suddenly you have a statistic; a child "going hungry" in the United States.

This ought to help you call "BS" on some of the more alarming ads or stories you may see over the Holidays.

What others are saying

  • hungry?
As a stay at home mom of 4, I hear "Im hungry" about 5 times a day per child. And guess what? When they say this I feed them!! My husband works very hard so that our kids are fed. We had 4 because we knew we could afford to feed, clothe, and educate them. If you cant, then have enough sense not to get pregnant! PLEASE, for the love of GOD, dont have 10 with no daddy around! I feel sorry for the children that have to go hungry, they are not at fault. But it is not the governments job to support them. Its fine that some people need a "hand up" to help them. They do not need a government lap to sit on!
  • War on Children
My wife and I conduct a Vacation Bible School outreach from our Church to an inner city church in Chattanooga. You would be surprised at the number of malnurished kids that attend VBS just to be there for the snacks. Many of these kids have parents in jail for drug offenses. If the parents are not in jail, they are spending upward of $1,000 per week, or more, for illegal drugs. That doesn't leave much for groceries for the kids.
I don't know what the answer is, but I sure as hell know that The war on drugs is part of the problem.
  • I stopped feeling bad...
when I was a teenager and I found out my "starving neighbours" were spending 10,000 dollars a year on cigarettes and booze.
  • +1 for Teresa
I agree completely. When I see a bunch of skinny people in line at Wal-Mart using their food stamps, then I might believe crap like this. But when I go to Wal-Mart and see poor looking people in line at McDonalds, I can't help but cry foul on these stats.
  • No no no no
We have an OBESITY problem, not a hunger problem you idiot leftards.

Don't believe me? Go to Wal-Mart and try to find skinny people, it's like finding Waldo, only harder.
  • the starving children
Let me tell you what happened in my house. I went to the grocery store and bought over $300 of food. We were supporting six......3 were teens.

The entire back end of the station wagon was filled with sacks. It took over an hour to put the food away. I was preparing dinner.

The teens came home from school, opened the pantry and announced.....there was nothing to eat!
  • Huh?
What's up with all those overweight people (parents *and* kids) that I see at the supermarket paying with food stamps??? Then they load it all into their SUV whilst taking on their cellphones...
  • Other Stats
I remember other studies with similarly misleading conclusions. One was talking about the number of children who don't konw where their next meal is coming from. I don't know where my next meal is coming from! Maybe Wendy's, maybe CPK, maybe I'll go get Rudy's BBQ. I guess I must be a charity case.
  • Hungry Children
My 17-year old son is 6'2" and 195. He plays football, wrestles and is a lifeguard at the local YMCA. He consumes about 10,000 calories each day. At any given time, if you were to ask him if he is hungry, he will tell you "yes." He is continually hungry, but he is far from being malnourished
  • A country where the poor are fat!
Dinesh D'Souza's dad came from India
to observe the horrible conditions of
the poor in the US of A.

After a few weeks of observations
and discussions with the poor he
was surprised that "Unlike the poor
in most countries of the world where
they are generally skinny or starving, the Poor in the US are generally fat
    or overweight!

    After that revelation, the D'Souza
    family migrated to the US.

  • Govt Stats = Squat
My grandfather was in great health until a year before he passed away at age 85. The doc who pronounced him put down smoking as a contributing factor to his death even though he only smoked a few times when he was 18 and serving in WWII. I no longer believe anything the U.S. gov't says.
  • hungry children
You hit the nail on the head! Most teenagers will say they are hungry about 1 hour after their last meal! Seems to me we would all be better off if we allowed ourselves to be a little hungry every day!
  • Not in America
I know of no areas in America where anyone is starving. Oh wait, the term used was 'hungry'. I presume as in 'haven't had a meal in oh say 7 or 8 hours. Hell, I'm 'hungry' at some point every day. Please help me!
If you can't feed yourself then you shouldn't have kids (wherever you live).
  • When I was in school...
The real peoblem being overlooked - about children in public schools - is not that they are hungry.

It is that the schools no longer require them to exercise. They don't even require them to take PE. When I was in school, we were required to take PE and exercise each day. There was even a presidential exercise program.

Today, kids don't have to take physical education each quarter. They also have soft drinks available via vending machines and some schools even have a fast food restaurant inside the cafeteria.

So the kids don't exercise and they have fast food for lunch, and a large percentage of them are on antidepresants and/or ADD drugs. There are so many fat kids - and people wonder why.

It really should be that kids are getting a better education than in years past. That is not the case. In years past, education included teaching kids to take care of their bodies via exercise. I was mostly educated in public schools - but they were much better back then.

Schools now-a-days are breeding grounds for obesity and drug use.

As Neal says correctly, "Sending your child to a public school is child abuse".
  • Hungry!
I'm getting hungry just reading these comments!!!
  • Oh boy
I was reading the Houston paper where they run the daily "sob story" in December. One of the recent ones was a single mother who was "a stay at home mom" If you are a single parent, you CANNOT be a stay at home mom. Get a damn job and stop making me pay for your illegitmate kids.
  • I'm Hungry
Why, just this past Thanksgiving I told my mom I was hungry! But she told me it would still be another hour or so till the turkey was done :( Oh cruel world!
  • obese kids
how can we have "hungry" children when America has by far the highest obesity rate among kids?
  • My Son is Always Hungry
My son is 15 and in a growth spurt. He also plays elite level ice hockey and lacrosse and thus has 17 hours of intense athletic activity every week. Thus he is ALWAYS hungry. Thankfully we have plenty of food so that he can eat nonstop - and thankfully he's an athlete so that he doesn't become a lardass.
  • History of "hungry children"
Like Robbins Mitchell, I have seen "hungry children" ads on TV as far back as I can remember.

What happened to those children we were supposed to send in money for? Did they die? Did they grow up on the $21 per month we sent in? Are they business executives? Are they the parents of the hungry children we are supposed to send in money for now?

If we knew 20 or 30 or 40 years ago that there were starving children, why are people still having children, apparently so many that it is a world crisis now as it supposedly was then?
  • Hungry Children
It is amazing how so many people can read something and fail to get the meaning therein. Especially "Millstone". Get over your government education, re-read the article and realize that it is about political hacks and the money that they want to control. Your money! Wise up, and help to keep them away from my money.
  • Parents of "hungry children"
I could probably muster up some "give a crap" if I wasn't sure their parents had satellite TV, smokes, a six pack, and mobile phones.

I'm all for feeding kids. No kid should starve. However, if I have to take care of your kid then your kid is mine, not yours. Any parent unable to care for their children, and that includes financially, needs to forfeit their parental rights.
  • hungry children
there is no reason for any child in this country to go hungry..we have free breakfast and lunches at every school, even in the summer time when school is not in session,
  • I love children
    but I can't eat a whole one.
  • mill stone around boortz's neck!
This story, is apparent in its coldness, ignoring the poor, hungry, naked those sick and in prison comes to mind, and how when one does this, one is unknown to Jesus, on that final day of judgment! But another one comes to mind, the one which says anyone who does any harm to a child will be cursed as if a mill stone was hung around their neck and cast into the sea! I venture to bet, Boortz's fate, karma, biblical due is not to be envied by anyone! Boortz claims to be christian orientated, but the bible warns us out of mouths of the false prophets we will know them by what comes out of their mouths, hate, evil, comes forth from Boortz and his fans, it is apparent and without question, but then he and his fans are blind, so they cannot see it, as they arrogantly and blindly head to their fate!
  • My son is hungry from Oct to March
Since he is a wrestler, he has to closely watch his weight. So once the season starts, he is hungry almost every night.
  • 'hungry children'
For as long as I can remember...and I can remember back before the Kennedy-Nixon debates....I have had to endure listening to leftish/liberal politicians ask "Why are we spending Federal dollars on THIS (whatever 'this' happened to be)when we should be feeding hungry children?....Senator Bernie Sanders is one of the worst at doing this.....and given how fat/plump/chubby/corpulent most kids in America seem to be becoming these days,I can't for the life of me figure out just which 'hungry children' these clowns are talking about....One thing I do know...given the abundance of our annual harvests and the number of both private and public food assistance programs there are in the US,any 'hungry children' out there are probably only about 20 steps away from their next junk food snack in the kitchen.

"Sure,I've been hungry before...but I always went straight to a good restaurant."
