UNITED AUTO WORKERS DISSES OUR MARINES

Perhaps you haven't heard about this one. It's an older story ...but I would like an update, especially since our U.S. Marines are still fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

After the 2004 election the United Auto Workers were a bit upset about Bush's reelection. They took their angst out on our Marines. It seems that some Marine Corps reservists working at a base in Detroit were parking in the lot at the UAW Solidarity House. After the Bush reelection the UAW went into the parking lot looking for Marines driving foreign cars or cars with Bush bumper stickers. These Marines were told they were no longer welcome to park their cars on UAW property.

Now the UAW is pushing for a taxpayer-funded bailout of their employers. Marines, even Marines who drive foreign cars, are taxpayers. Has the UAW changed their tactics at Solidarity House?

What others are saying

  • UAW wages
No, no, no, the average employee makes about $75.00 an hour in wages and benefits. They make about $29.00 hourly, $20.00 per hour goes to their medical plan - YES, THAT RIGHT, $40,000 a year, and the remainder goes to pension and other benefits. They even have a job bank - this means that if they get laid off, they apply for and receive unemployment insurance and, on top of that they receive another $400.00 or so a week from the "job bank." WOW. THESE CONTRACTS MUST BE RENEGOTIATED IF THEY WANT A BAILOUT. CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN TODAY.
  • To Copyleft:
Copyleft - you're right. The parking lot is private property and the owners should be allowed to use it how they see fit.

Likewise, individuals are allowed to express their feelings in regards to how the orginization uses the private property...

Now, what should *not* happen would be for a group to harass the government into making some kind of law that the Union has to allow any make/model of car to park on their property.

Like, if I build a building for a business and I have to use part of the lot for handicapped parking and include ramps and such. If people want to complain, gripe and picket my business because I don't want to accommodate disabled individuals, that's peachy. However, to make it illegal for me to use my property how I see fit is crazy.
  • Red States
I think that I will stick with cars and trucks that are manufactured in red states.
  • Not really.
I don't know about this particular case, but having lived up there, I can tell you for certain that the UAW objects to foreign cars on anything they own. When the Northwest mechanics struck (notwithstanding whether they should have or not), they warmly welcomed AMFA to use their facilities to organize picketing and the like...if you didn't drive one of those dern fer'en cars.
  • Union Wages
Unions are the main reason for inflation. We have an 8th grade drop out in Detroit putting fenders on Fords for $30 per hour... Hence, the $12,000 auto that now costs $30,000, the $.50 loaf of bread that now costs $2.50, etc, etc. They constantly strike for more wages but never insist on increasing production thus, the increase is passed on to the consumer in the cost of the product. It's time the Government stopped bailing out private business, let their unions save them!
  • uaw
the unions need to go away that's 1 of the reasons the big 3 are in dire straights
  • UAW Hypocrisy
If a Marine drove a Subaru that was, say, assembled in Indiana or a BMW that was assembled in S. Carolina or a Toyota that was assembled in Tenn.--they need to remember one thing:
These are the same UAW idiots that created this mess and are the principal reason their competitors are so successful producing automobiles in the USA.
  • UAW
The UAW relented soon after the outrage. It is no longer an issue as the 1/24th Marines, who were headquartered in the Broadhead Armory just down the street from Solidarity House, have relocated to Slefridge Air National Guard base.

The UAW does have strict, but foolish rules about "foreign" cars on their property. Annually, I give a briefing to UAW Veterans Reps at the UAW Family Education Center in Northern Michigan. Only US, union-built cars and trucks are allowed on the property. All other have to park off the property and are shuttled in. I guess its their property so they can make whatever runs they wish, but it does seem a bit extreme.

  • Nothing to do with being a marine
They were pissed because of folks driving foreign cars. It had nothing to do with them being Marines.

    1st Lt John. USMC
  • Stupid...
So they are mad because the Marines were using and buying foreign stuff? I wonder who made the cell phones, sneakers, and electronics that the union guys were using. I wonder if they also complain about buying foreign oil.

What is it like to pick and choose liberals?
  • unions
I belong to a union myself but they have gotten out of control. I am tired of being told who I should vote for and why. Individual thought? no, not with them. When I would go into my union office before the election, I would never state who I was voting for; I would have been run out on a rail.

If the union employees have a problem with military who have probably been deployed so these union workers can enjoy the freedoms of life, they can go to the sand box instead of these Marines.
  • Union harrassment
In Gadsden, AL, at the now defunct Republic/LTV Steel plant, nobody was allowed to park a foreign made vehicle on any company property, and anybody who did faced severe damage to their vehicle. These union workers do not have their high paying jobs anymore, since the plant has been closed for several years, thus demonstrating what the brilliant union mindset can do for an industry and town.
  • So, how is this different from company executives threatening to "downsize" any identified Obama voters in revenge for his electoral victory?

Besides, I thought private property was sacred to libertarians. Surely they're entitled to block anyone from their parking lots as they see fit?
  • Nothing new
I worked at the local named after Walter Reuther which is now gone. I was doing electrical work for a few weeks. I drove a vehicle built by UAW workers in PA, a VW Jetta. I endured so much harassment during the week I was there, no one touched the car but.....towards the end of the second week I was there, I sat down with the head of the local. I explained to him that I was driving a union built car but that didn't matter to him, foreign was foreign. So armed with information from GM, I informed him that the cars that he and the other officials drive were not made by union workers but in Mexico. He called me a liar, I stood my ground and told him check it out himself and because I am being harassed with no real reason, I will tell the press what's going on. He backed down, inviting me to see for myself that they are made here by 'Union Workers'. He opened the door, looked at the sticker and turned red - Assembled in Mexico.

The next day, there were different cars sitting in the lot and I never got harassed again.
  • Obama, Democrats and Unions
A buddy and I were discussing a little conundrum that the Democrats may be finding themselves in with the potential bailout of the Big Three Auto Companies. According to Forbes Magazine, the yearly wage and benefits compensation for a GM employee in 2006 was $146,520. Now let’s say you have a husband and wife team that has been working at GM for the past 20 to 25 years. They are probably making somewhat more than the reported average salary. So now even if you subtract the benefits part of the equation you have a family that is making well over $250,000 a year. That puts them directly in the crosshairs of president-elect Obama's new tax policy. Is this the top 5% that Obama has been talking about for the last 2 years? If it is then why does this family need a bailout from the Democrats?
