UNION MENTALITY

Yesterday we talked at length about the auto industry and how it is completely drowning because of unions. Here's a small scale union story for you ...

Detroit is trying to clean up its image. In efforts to do so, the city council wants to give a $200,000 contract to a non-profit organization dedicated to the reforestation of the city. It's being called The Greening of Detroit. The group made up of volunteers would plant 2,000 saplings in neighborhoods that have been plagued by some invasive species.

Enter the local union: AFSCME Local 542. This union has now stalled the City Council from authorizing this agreement for The Greening of Detroit. Why? Because the local union sees this as competition for the city's 50 forestry workers and they believe that the city is outsourcing THEIR jobs by allowing this non-profit organization to plant trees. Instead, this union would rather the government spend the $200,000 on trees and then pay the union workers to do the labor on top of that ... rather than allowing these volunteers to plant the trees for free.

  • My Blog Talks Often of Michigan's Woes
Great post. Last week I posted something that will flesh out the story- I posted about how in Detroit schools they are indoctrinating youths with liberal views, so it is no surprise that Detroit works this way. Check out my blog at: http://aconservativeteacher.blogspot.com
  • Union story
My father was a labor relations manager for Cummins--he passed on some ten years ago. Back in early 90's, after he was transferred to run a plant in the South, he was called back to our hometown for a big negotiation for a subsidiary located there. As I understand the story, the company wanted two concessions. First, they wanted labor to be on the same health plan that management was on. Second, they wanted the annual summer shutdown to be cut from two weeks to one week. The company had apparently made a lot of concessions already, but warned that this particular subsidiary was the least effective of several making the same product line and the company was willing to close the plant and move the work to a similar subsidiary. The union leaders decide to not even take the deal to the workers. Company says, "Right. We're closing down on (some date). Too bad we couldn't agree." Leadership scurries back to quickly run a vote, but the company sticks by the decision. Around 600 people lose their jobs, the small town virtually dies.

All because the union felt that their health care plan had to be better than management, and that even though technology advances meant 2 weeks were no longer required to retool, they still needed the *extra* week paid off.

I heard a lot of stories like this as a teenager. At the time I didn't understand the ramifications. I remember having rocks thrown at our house, but didn't know why. It all became clear as a college student when I saw my Dad put on a bullet-proof vest when he left the house because of the threats that had been made against his life.
  • The next time you hear a Democrat bemoaning those companies that 'take our jobs overseas', remember this -- most of those companies were union shops. That's why we get our textiles from China now.

It's not that stuff is cheaper to make over there -- it's that the unions have made it so EXPENSIVE to make over HERE.

Don't believe me? Come to the union plant where I (a non-union person) work. One year the JANITOR made $100,000.
  • Union
Speaking of unions, I've noticed that the union of government employees (or whatever they are calling themselves) is running ads (or something)on tv. I haven't seen them on satillite, but I have on the network channels on Sunday mornings for the last 3 weeks or so.

What I havne't figured out is.... why?
  • goonions
It is still easier to get rid of bad employees in the US even in a union shop than it is in China or Vietnam. After 10 years a foreign invested factory in China is required to provide employment (or a salary and don't come to the factory) until retirement age and termination after one year of employment requires one month salary for each year employed until the ten year policy kicks in.
  • Unions
The greatest thing I ever did was leave my union job. Unions are the biggest lie in this country. Workers who were violent and made threats against other employees were protected. Pressure was placed on other employees to lie and cover up the laziness and impompetence of fellow union "brothers and sisters". This environment created some of the most bitter people I have ever seen. I thought "this is me in 30 years" and I went back to college and left the union behind.
  • Unions and Congress
Since it was Congress that allowed the unions to become the deadly dragon that it is today, instead of using taxpayer money to bail them out, why dont they open their own wallets. Here, in the real world, if you break something while working on it, you replace it with your own buck,or work the non-paid time to fix it. Bottom line, why are we the tax payers having to pay money to the car companies to bail them out of the over-bearing (Guaranteed)money they shell out to unions when the cost of the union money is already passed down to us in the form of the price of the car, not to mention all the extra taxes already paid out in the process. I know I'm rambling, oh well, just a thought.
  • Unions
Unions are very antiquated now. Even members of once "powerful" unions like IMA stand on strike and watch the scabs jump over the line. In a global manufacturing community, you think that American workers would be a little more weary about their definition of "fair." You think that it is unfair that you only make $20/hour, imagine what happens when your employer moves your job to Mexico for 30 pesos an hour.
  • unions
Unions let parasites continue to thrive and stifle individuality. If you have to have a union to protect your job, you are weak. Deal with that reality.
  • Unions
There was a time when unions helped. Many of my ancestors were steel workers and coal miners in western PA. Wanting to work 5 days and 8 hours is reasonable. Wanting a fan in a roughing room is reasonable. What is unreasonable? How about free dependent care? Only congressmen and senators get that. Yeah, I compared you auto workers to congressmen and senators. Keep up the unreasonable demands and you will soon be on the unemployment line where there is no health care. Then maybe you can go to a non-union auto manufacturer (like Toyota) and get a job there. I hope they turn you down from your past affiliations.
  • Unions
Just let those union members keep it up. When GM, Ford and Chrysler all go belly up, they will all be out of jobs. If they do nothing in terms of concessions, it will serve them right. There comes a time when the parasite will kill the host. When they do lose their jobs, they can apply to one of the domestic Japanese plants where there are no unions.
I come from a union family. There was a time when unions were good for industry. But the unions went too far a long time ago and now they are reaping what they sowed.
Case in point: about 12 years ago in Johnstown PA, US Steel was willing to open up a plant. They were offering something like $18 an hour and the unions demanded $20 an hour. No plant. So, the choice is: work for a little less or go to the unemployment office. By the way, unemployment does not give out free health insurance including dependents. You auto workers have a lot of nerve calling other people greedy when NOBODY gets free dependent care (except for maybe congressmen and senators). Yeah, I put you in the same category as them.
  • Wow!
I'm a firm believer: "You can educate beyond ignorance; but you cannot fix stupid."
  • What?
Now people aren't even allowed to volunteer. If this would have happened years ago Obama would have never had a job previous to being a Senator. I bet that would have gotten voters to think he was inexperienced...hahahahahaha.
  • No Union Here!
I work for a small company. We provide a repair service to industry. There are 11 employees. If the EFC Act passes under the soon-to-be administration, there will be pressure on my company to join a union. If our company tries to unionize, the president WILL close the doors to his business and I WILL be out of a job. I don't blame him a bit, I'd do the same if I were in that position. Will the unions care if I lose my job then? I seriously doubt it. At least all of our employees are smart enough to know better than to unionize. Of course who knows what would happen if pressure and intimidation are applied from some union henchmen?
  • Unions
Unions usually blame "management" for business failures and have convinced themselves of it, not entertaining any dissenting view.
  • The purpose is to serve the unions
A few years ago at the local government school, one of the kids grandfathers decided to make and donate a huge corked bulletin board to be mounted in the main lobby of the school. You know, a place for classes to display student art and projects.

Well, enter the union representing the school district's carpenters. Since the board wasn't made and mounted by their members, it had to be removed. That was a number of years ago and there still isn't a bulletin board there.

Unions at best are a general tax on society but government unions are directly responsible for larger, more expensive governments and in turn higher taxes.
  • Easy fix
Why don't all these union dependents just hand over a "fair" portion of their salary to these non-profit folks for their efforts and call it a day. That would remove any threat to their jobs and I'm willing to bet they all voted for wealth redistribution anyway.
  • Useless Unions
Nowadays, about all unions seem dedicated to is protecting the jobs of the lazy and incompetent. They have long since outlived their usefulness. They are indeed parasites that are sucking the ecomony dry.
  • Useless Unions
About the only thing unions are good for nowadays is protecting the jobs of the lazy and incompetent. The time has long past when they actually did some constructive good
  • Invasive Species
Looks like the Unions are the destructive invasive species. They will die out only when the host is dead.

belinda, cristina, laura, since your the ones doing most of the work for neal.. whats your take home pay and benefits as opposed to neals?do you make enough to buy an airplane, travel all over the countryside? bet not!!
  • Oh the union label
Same as the useless union where I work(not a member either). Here is how they work it:
    1. You need the union to protect you against these guys taking your work away.
    2. When you lose your job because they cannot afford to pay the union wages for the project, you need the union to protect your job from getting cut.
Only if the union can get the credit for something is it any good. No limelight or pess conferences for the union, it's just not a good idea.
  • Labor-Management Balance
When unions got their start management had all the power and the economy was crap for all but a few and they were constantly fighting each other. As they were growing there became a balance and our economy was great. Now the unions have far more power than they need to actually fullfill their purpose and the economy sucks again!

Why is it that people in the unions can't see this and get a grib on their reps?

I'm not surprised by this article on Detroit, I was born, raised and lived in Michigan until last year. I'm well aware of how unions (don't) work!
  • Unions kill jobs
This reminds me of the stories we hear out of hollywood about how they have to have union guys move power cables and can shut down a shoot for hours depending on how quickly they do the job. Notice that more movies are being filmed overseas or in states where these union rules don't apply.
  • Common Sense
All common sense and logic in this country has completely escaped the government and the people that love big government.
  • Saw what they did to steel
Grew up in Bethlehem PA and saw what the unions did to steel. Some things never change
  • Greening of Detroit
This problem will take care of itself. The unions strangle the jobs out of Detroit, more people abandon the city, and the forest reclaims it on its own.
  • unions
You think unions have destroyed the auto industry, just wait to see what they are going to do to your government. Be afraid! They are bankrupting California.
  • Fire Their ***es
These Unions in general are not for the people...They are only for the guys on top. They're just as bad at the HOA's Boortz speaks so highly of! The People should have a voice but only in their organization. This is a case of greed and nothing else. Can't they just accept they "lost" the bid to a better offer? What a bunch of wussies! Yup Boortz, The Wussification of America is in full force.
  • Why?
Why would you spend money to plant trees that have previously been "waylaid by the invasive species that's been plaguing Michigan since 2002"?
Have the invasive species been removed?
  • Unions
Unions should have been disbanded decades ago. They have systematically ruined the American automotive industry. Auto companies should NOT be bailed out. It's their fault they allowed the unions to control them. They are as corrupt as they come! The only way they'll learn is to let them die and start all over. There are plenty of good employees willing to work for companies that are not involved with unions, which are completely outdated.
  • "protected" work
I work in a union shop in the aircraft industry and see this "protected" job mentality at work every day. For example, I am doing work that should be done by a salaried professional. However, because a small fraction of my job involves using power tools I am forced to be part of the bargaining unit and subject to union rules. All because a "salaried" man can't run power tools according to our union's contract.

  • UNIONS
Democrats always take a good idea and go to far with it. Unions are just one example of this. Unions were a good thing in the past for meeting the needs of the worker. Once Unions demand to be paid even if no work has been done things have gone too far. UAW people get paid for up to a year or so even if there is no work to do. In my work place people are fearful of moving a desk or table. If a union member sees you they will file a grievence and demand payment for a job they did not do but lost out on. At my work place if you work 1 minute over 8 hours you get paid for another half day. Insane mandates like these are what give unions a bad name.

The only way I would bail the big three out is if the unions were stripped of power. If not I say (left) them fail so they can rise from the ashes without all of the mumbo jumbo union agreements.

I have always said unions in the private sector can only get so bad because the companies can fail. What really scares me are unions in the government that cannot go bankrupt unless the entire country goes down the tubes. Of course the only place unions are growing is in the government sector.
  • Unions are financial WMDs
It would take an atomic bomb to clean up Detroit.
  • Typical
This is just the typical mentality. I work for a large organization that has both unionized and non unionized workers. A coworker (nonunionized) was fired for moving his PERSONAL beloginings from one cubicle to another cubicle just 15 feet away because it took away their union jobs.
  • Slow union death
The auto-workers union has already killed Detroit. The teachers unions have destroyed the public education system. Now this union wants to prevent someone from volunteering their time? When will he sever ties from ALL UNIONS. They do not serve the purpose for which they were created decades ago. Shut down any unionized company, relocate to a right to work state, and resume operations under a new name.
  • Unions
It's amazining to me how simple this is. The big three are allowing the unions, by demanding to much, to negotiate the employees out of a job. Yet the employees still support them. Let them fail. Maybe then they will realize what has caused this mess. Stop whining and start producing....more of my tax dollars prolongs the suffering.
  • Unions are for losers
Simply stated, only users work union jobs. Those that cannot make it in the real world on their own. Losers.
  • Unions and Trees
What's the problem here? The unions represent the workers, and they're only trying to get work for the people they represent.

The city only needs to say no.
  • unions
Labor unions are like a parasite that never considers the well-being of its host. Usually, it is just a little harder to see how destructive their demands are. The US auto industry may not survive, and much of the problem can be traced back to the unions and the obscene labor costs.
  • unions
just another give me group sticking their hand out and accomplishing nothing gotta love it
  • format
    stinks, step back in time.
  • Unions
I can't believe that anyone other than union members still believe they are usefull. I do believe they served their purpose 30-40 years ago but serve no purpose now except to pad the pockets of union reps. Wake up America, unions are helping to destroy the economy and many industries across the country.
  • Unions
Another good union story for you...My father-in-law has worked at a Ford truck plant in Detroit for about six years. He's laid off about half the year due to no work and when he actually does go to work all we hear about is how they have the system figured out and know how to do the least amount of work possible. We also hear about the ridiculous TRIPLE overtime these guys are offered to work off-shift. He makes about 75k/yr doing a job that should really only pay about 40k. To make things worse, Ford recently offered a buyout package of $100,000.00 to him and several others. Now keep in mind, they're laid off about half the year already with production being cut and talk of plant closures. Well, he and several other union drones decided that this wasn't good enough; they are holding out for MORE because they feel Ford will come back with a higher offer, because hey, they deserve it! Funny thing happened though, about a week after they all turned down the buyout, Ford announced huge losses, job cuts and the fact that they won't be offering any more buyouts. Way to go geniuses!
  • 2000 Saplings for $200,000?
For saplings the cost should be more like $2,000.
  • What the...?
Do these people have no shame at all? This group is taking time out of their busy schedules to plant trees out of the goodness of their heart (for free, I might add), and this union group's greed is trying to prevent people from doing a good deed? What is this world coming to, seriously?
  • Those are some expensive trees
I worked at Lowes and still shop there fairly regularly, and saplings don't cost $100 a tree. You can get a good sized tree, different species, for maybe $15 to $20 a tree. And I know darn well it does not take $80 per tree to plant one, so the City of Detroit is padding the pockets of someone therough this, because I could do the work of buying all 2000 trees, plant them myself, and still make enough money for me to be happy all for $100,000. That would give me $50 a tree, which $15 would buy the tree, $10 would buy mulch and fill soil for the hole, and the other $25 would be for about 20 minutes of labor. Not bad if you ask me. Seeing things like this help me realize just how awful government is run.
  • Green up Detroit
It's going to take a whole lot more than volunteers and $200k to clean up Detroit.
  • This is a prime example of why I quit GM and left Detroit ten years ago.
  • Unions
Back in the 30s and 40s you saw a literal migration of southerners to the factories in Michigan and Ohio. They joined unions that eventually destroyed their jobs. Look around the south and see how many of them have come back. They can't wait to do here what hey did up north.
  • Unions
Just read today on the MSNBC site that the 10 Municipalities at the bottom of the economic list are all in Michigan and Ohio. One thing both states have in common is a Unionized work force. Seems that cities and states without so many unions are and have been doing much better
