My God! The unions are actually going to pull this one off! Their unionization-by-intimidation bill is actually going to pass! Now just ask yourself .. what would you do if you were an employer and you felt that the Democrats were on the verge of passing the union's "card check" bill. Well .. I'll tell you what I would do. I would be looking at any automation that I could find that would reduce my workforce. I would then go with all of the offshore options I could find that would allow me to get rid of more employees. Then I would go to staffing agencies for the rest of my workforce. The people working in my place of business would not be working for me. They would be working for a staffing agency. If they want to unionize something, they can unionize the staffing agency. If the Democrats bring us "card check" along with an expansion of the Family Leave Act my guess is that there are a lot of employers out there who will do everything they can to get rid of employees.

Unions played a big part in destroying the big three automakers. Now they can play a similar role with your business. Aren't you workers glad you voted for Obama? You might have voted yourself right slap out of a job.

Jazel I love the way that you and so many people use selective memory to make an argument to blame people. Lets try this again, in 2000 Bush has been blamed for the unemployment caused by, are you watching, THE DOT COM problem. Lest see, oh ya! That happened in the last part of the CLINTON era. Then in just 8 short months Bush again strikes and made the terrorist so mad we had 9/11. Then thru his FAILED ECONOMICS had the stock market well over 12K and unemployment the lowest its been for a long time until June of this year when DEMS and LIBS started talking about raising taxes. And now the bailout that the Democratic Controlled Congress is using to hand out money to all the evil rich people that caused the problems.
OH! And I guess that when these same evil corporations were "OUT SOURCING" during the CLINTON era, that was BUSH's fault too. Not to mention that the UNIONS were designing these contracts for the last 20 years.
Ya I can see your point. IF I SQUINT MY EYES AND LOOK THE OTHER DIRECTION!
Get a grip. Your not fooling anyone. BTW, I missed the memo, when did GOD come down and make the DEMS and the LIBS the saviors of the earth?

  • Card Check
The liberal's promotion of Card Check legislation would seem to be a case of cutting one's own throat. Don't the Libs see how businesses will react? It looks like nothing less than a case of outright insanity, and guess what, an M.D. Psychiatrist is sayin the same thing. Go to the Amazon book site and read the reviews of the book "The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness," by Lyle H. Rossiter, M.D., Psychiatrist.
  • Problem with Unions is the stewards become politicians and instead of protecting the workers and negotiating for contracts that benefit both the employee and the employer, they play the wealth envy card and "demand" benefits that force employers to do as Neil's scenario suggests. I have worked in Union shops before where it wasn't neccesarily the wages that hurt the most it was the ridiculous hoops that had to be jumped through to fire bad employees or promote good employees. Also low production quotas that could not budged even when the work load demanded it. I worked for a company that lost one of their largest contracts (and consequently laid off half of their workforce) because they could not force employees to work overtime or step up production to meet deadlines. Matter of fact employees who tried to produce more were when there supervisor asked them to were admonished by their Union representatives as they were undermining their future employment. Who was undermining who?
  • Card Check
Two unions have fought over our plant for quite some time. I fear what this is going to do. They already come and knock on your door and want to sit down and have a chat with you. Can you imagine what kind of chat that will be now? I do fear what they can do. I fear for my job as well.
  • Unions
Employers: if you treat your help decently, odds are they won't vote for a union (although "card check" is awful).

I was recently notified that I was being reclassified as "non-exempt" (hourly - eligible for overtime). I was on salary in a job where some extra time was needed now and then (no problem with that). My pay is the same but I have to wonder if our output will be the same if we're limited to 8 hours/day.

I doubt this was the company's idea.. it's probably the gummint's idea of "helping". I see it as just another incentive for outsourcing.

There is no "opt-out". I negotiated my compensation and knew what I was signing up for... but, no, the state has to "protect" me. Geez.
  • Change
We are all going to be asking for change soon.

    Change...Spare some change?
  • Kiss your jobs goodbye
Look you can try to blame the democrats for losing your jobs...but for the past 8 years we have been outsourcing overseas (india for technical, computer support, sheduling for cable etc...) and (philipines for nursing, and biotechnology)...and we were in a republican administration. So now we are Changing and doing something different. Lest you forget...shortly after Bush got in office unemployment rate escalated and then to get our minds quickly off of the economy we went to war ...get it straight and put the blame where it belongs.
  • Unions
I will never knowingly buy another union made product, especially a New Union made vehicle. If I had a company and the card check was passed, I would look for a way to set up part time and contracting or simply reduce employees. Unions have ruined public education and in most areas, the only growth in jobs is government employees. All opf the bailouts are totally insande--borrowing money to save incompetence and corruption. Russia is right, the US is disintegrating.
  • What Next?
I work for a major defense contractor and employ over 100 employees and we have 3 unions and are already pretty much up against the wall with what we can do and say. The union can file frivolous grievances on nothing and you have to waste time proving your innocence. The original intention of unions may have been good intended but it has gone haywire. With this new bill, What's Next!
  • 2nd depression is coming!
Predictions already abound that by end of 2009 9% or 10% unemployment, but Boortz fans, lovers/worshippers of at the Bushite alter of compassionate, conservative mantra have no one to blame but themselves, they touted their messiah Bush Jr as savior for the right wing, and he proved anything but, their savior, in fact his presidency makes Herbert Hoover look good, and we all know how that one ended and led up to the 1st great depression, only saving grace is history will write this story, not the hate radio icons such as Boortz, Ingraham, Oreilly, Limbaugh, Hannity, whom were like "Tokyo Rose" in world war II, selling propaganda to the public in guise of information! One reaps what one sows, and the right sowed their own destruction in 2000 by backing a thief who with aid from his brother governor of Florida stole that election, and with dirty tricks Karl Rove jammed phone lines in Newhampshire, pulled some dirty tricks on putting more voting machines in republican dominate areas in Ohio and less in the poor areas, guess the great equalizer now is those who voted, worshiped for these right wingers will find equality in unemployment, poverty, homelessness! Poetic, karmic justice! Excuse me if I do not cry big crocodile tears for your sorrow!
  • Don't Give Up Hope!
Don't forget that the mandatory arbitration provision is actually much worse for the economy than the card-check provision - pointy headed arbitrators deciding what employers will provide to employees 2 years no matter what the employer can actually bear? That is essentially socialism. But you can take action before it is too late. See http://www.EFCAexposed.com
  • Job creation
I guarantee you that 8 years of Obama will create far more jobs than 8 years of Bush the Son created.

And the stock market will actually be higher when he leaves that it was when he got there.

    Just wait and see.

Face it guys. You lost to a closet Muslim who palls around with terrorists and is black and whose middle name is Hussein.

That should give you a clue at how terrible the product you offered was.

    You betcha my fellow prisoners!
  • UAW
How long will it take once this card check law is enacted before you see Toyota, Nissan, Honda etc.. all be forced to unionize under the UAW. I guess my next camry will cost an extra 2 grand because of it....
  • mackrogue@yahoo.com
Hey, how about those of us who did not vote for Obama. Some of us will be out of a job, too. Thanks to our less enlightened fellows.
  • my workforce will be terminated 12/30 because of this ridiculous legislation.
I own a business and all of my staff was notified that an Obama win would result in their jobs being terminated 12/30/08. This is precisely why. Learn more about why we can't put up with liberal emasculation of our society at goldenpansy.com
  • Staffing Agency
Great idea on the staffing agency approach to avoiding a union. I have 35 employees and planned to hire up to 150 next year but I decided that if we become unionized, that number will be a fraction of 150 in terms of regular, full-time employees. People don't realize that we will become a one party country once the Democrats start receiving their cut of billions of dollars in new union dues. How could the Republicans ever generate enough $ to over come that?
  • Union Check Bill
Dave Clark, Problem is the big three have been producing what the public wants to buy- SUVs and trucks. Now that it is inconvenient for the "typical" american to own these vehicles thanks to high gas prices, they now want to buy "economical" cars that the Big Three have been making all along and nobody buying them, had they been only making those cars they would have been out of business a long time ago. Problem is that demand has shifted so dramatically in such a short time, everyone got caught off guard. Why is it when a young couple is expecting their first child they go right out and buy a huge SUV? It is perception and demand my friend. Big three were producing what people wanted to buy! Real problem is people want way more than they need and are so intent in keeping up with the Jones". What do you think happened with the subprime mortgage business. People were biting off way more than they knew they could chew just to keep up with their buddies.

If GM, Ford, Chrysler were producing the cars yesterday that people wanted to buy today nobody would have bought them because they did not want them then. They do now only because they can no longer afford to drive what they own.

Why do you think Hoinda, Toyota, Nissan BMW, Mercedes and most of the other imports started getting into the truck and suv business- because that is what people were buying.
  • Card Check
I would have to thionk that should this pass that there will be legal challenges. If I am Walmart management, I probably have alegal strategy in place sinde they will be number one.
  • Change
Sounds to me like the blind that voted for change (Obama) just might get it
  • Already Started Planning
I have already started planning. I employ 30 people. I have created 3 new companies, each employing 6-10. These companies will sell services to each other. With the lower number of employees in each company, I am hoping I will be able to escape the coming mandates.
  • Unions
Although I hate what the union concept stands for and what they do, I've been offered and plan on taking an electrian's apprentiship through the local IBEW. I just don't see any reason not to. The writing is on the wall. The age of union control over the work place is pretty much upon. This election proved only that freedom and liberty are pretty much dead in this country (or at least on its deathbed). So now is the time to buckle down and what I have to in order to take care of me and mine. Why should I bust my ass so that people who are too lazy to work right can steal my earnings?....to hell with all of them.
  • Card Check
Comrade Neal, I hope you're wrong. If this nnsense passes Congress how much longer before required healthcare? How much longer before the government tells us where we can live, eat, work, and play? All I can see is doom to the cherished freedoms we once enjoyed as citizens of the US. I see the coming of the USSA (United Socialist States of America), and it bothers me a great deal.
  • Kiss Your Job Goodbye
Ironically, this might be the greatest deterent we will ever have against illegal immigration.
  • National Unionization
it is another piece of the socialist government about to take place come January 20th. We are doomed! May God have mercy on us all.
  • Welcome To The New Economy
The increased cost to operate a unionized shop will make a company less competitive. You either eliminate jobs, automate, or move overseas.

This policy may eventually create an economy with chronic high unemployment. There will be little job growth since it will be an expensive commitment to hire anyone. The unemployed and underemployed will demand more government support programs, which will be gladly provided along with increased taxes on businesses and their owners.

I see a death spiral here.
  • RE: KISS YOUR JOB GOODBYE
And THIS sort of nonsense is why the next 4 years scare me.
  • New Car
I was at the point where it was spend thousands on my 10 year old Chevy or buy a new car. This past weekend, we went shopping and ended up with a new Honda. Still American made but without the extra $$ for the union goons. I got more for my money. Read the writing on the wall, UAW...
  • Stalinist unions
I wonder if an employer could get away with telling the unionizing mental midgets that it's NOT their company to mess with and to take a long walk off a short dock. Then threatenn to fire everyone and hire illeagal aliens at half the pay.
  • No worries
I have total relief in knowing that even though I may not have a job, I do not need one because the Appointed One will provide all that I need: medical, insurance, housing, food, and retirement. So why do I need to work?
  • We will close
I work for a family owned manufacturing business that employs around 45-50 employees at anyone time. My employer says once the unions come the doors will close. He has enough to live on and can retire early if he needs to. A 60 year old business will cease.
  • Lost my Bank job last week
After 10 years, I was told that i was going to be a reduction on their budget. My bank is not even in the news but a big 3.
  • Union control
There once was a time where unions were needed. That time has long since expired. They are a detriment rather than an asset today. Union control is all about power and money- Their remaining in control and taking your money!! Allowing chapter 11 for the big 3 will not do anything to prevent the unions from remaining in control. Yes, it will countermand tthe UAW contracts and render them void, but what do you people think the unions will do when the Big Three go to staff their factories. The Unions will step in and not allow anyone other than a union member get anywhere close to the application line. Then they will call for unionization all over again and demand their previous contract be honored. Any bailout of the big 3 needs top be with the stipulation that the unions are prohibited from organizing within the companies. Otherwise we will be right back where we started.
  • unions/increased taxes
I employ 20 people. I have already started to evaluate how I can let 2 of my employees go. When taxes are raised on my business, I will immediately let two employees go. The ones left, if they want to keep their job, will have to work harder to cover the increased work load.
  • Union "Card Check" bill
The real fix is to make cars Americans want to buy. Until then you can pass any law, give the big 3 Billions and have union workers complain they deserve a working wage.
I want a car that gets 80miles per gallon and only needs regular maintenance. Is that so much to ask for?
  • Minimum Wage
Spoke with some small town business owners over the weekend. They tell me WHEN not IF the minimum wage goes to $10/hour, they will be forced to layoff personnel and/or close. Now what !?
