COMING TO A STATE NEAR YOU

You'll get a kick out of this. Oklahoma is really taking to heart the idea of universal health insurance coverage. Oklahoma State Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland has proposed a plan to make sure that all Oklahomans have medical coverage - make it mandatory. And if you fail to comply, the government will take away your driver's licenses, take away your state income tax deductions, and (hold your breath) take away college football season tickets.

Naturally, people are immediately upset because it "unfairly targets" the poor people who can't afford medical coverage. Don't worry, I'm sure that a tax on the evil rich to pay for the poor people to have medical coverage is part 2 of this story.

What others are saying

  • Tickets
I know that tickets are hard to come by, just try getting a ticket for this weeks OU/OSU Game, but this is crazy.

Who do you think the state spends the most money on for health care. It for sure is not the people that have good jobs or are retired at 30.
  • Tickets
As an OU fan I'd like to know what they're going to do with those tickets they take. Auction?
  • Oklahoma insurance proposal
The item states that the proposal would require Oklahomans to have health insurance. It DID NOT state that the health insurance would be provided by the state government. As far as health care plans for the poor, we already subsidize them through Medicaid.

I don't know the details of this particular proposal, but making it mandatory to maintain health insurance is a GOOD THING. This is because those of us who maintain health insurance end up paying for the free medical care given to those who don't. Hospitals have to make up for the cost of the care they don't get paid for and guess how they do that? They pass the costs on to those who DO PAY. Thus, people who are uninsured drive up the cost of health insurance for those of us who have it.

I am ALL FOR making health insurance mandatory. I am ALL FOR the states establishing health care programs for people who CAN MEET A STRICT STANDARD under MEANS TESTING. I am also ALL FOR throwing out Medicare, throwing out Medicaid, and getting the federal government completely out of the healthcare business.

Long live the 10th amendment and will you people PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU'RE READING.

I am now rotating my ALL CAPS switch to the safe position and placing my keyboard back in the v-notch stake in preparation to exit the foxhole.
  • Kim Holland
She has since said that the part about taking away football tickets was supposed to be a joke. The truth is that Holland herself is a joke!

Agree with my compatriots: maybe our Republican-majority legislature can save us from the last two years of Brad "Obama superdelegate/bandwagoner" Henry.
  • Is the U.S. Constitution void in Oklahoma?
Or does malignant authoritarianism force these obtuse leftist twits to ignore little details like that?

I'm so sick of this nanny state crap!
  • Mandatory Health Insurance
I live in California so I am sure there is some dumb idea being floated here that will rival it since we are ruled here by the left. At least you have a Republican legislature...just hope there are not too many RINOS there.
  • Oklahoma Health Coverage
This was reported in the Oklahoman. The next day, Kim Holland said she was joking. Really? Maybe the hundreds or thousands who contacted her office had something to do with that.
  • In Oklahoma???
As a long time resident of Oklahoma, this at first take sounded unbelievable. I mean, I'm proud to be an Okie becasue we seem to be the last clear-thinking state (and the only completely red state) in what's currently left of the Union.

This just didn't sound like the Oklahoma I know, and I live in Tulsa.

I think it's likely that you got hold of some screwball democrat's Christmas Wishlist. They wish for lots of things, and with Obama in the house, they are getting more bold and more confident of getting them.

I seriously doubt that we'd be dumb enough to actually entertain the idea for more than, oh, a few seconds.

But stranger things have happened, so I suppose I shall be more wary over the coming months.
  • Kim Holland
She's a Democrat, that explains everything! Thank God both sides of the house are controlled by Republicans! Now all we have to do is endure 2 more years of Gov. Henry.
  • Taking away poor people's season tickets?
    WTF?!
  • Obamanation
Good god! Obama is not even in office yet and he is already messing crap up. And in my homestate none the less
  • Universal Coverage in Oklahoma
When I was attending the OUHSC back in the late 80's we had a visit from the Director of Public Health from Oregon. She was talking proudly about their expanded Medicare coverage in her state. It was a disaster because it was so expensive, they began to ration care that far back. The leaders in Oklahoma at that time stated it would never come to Oklahoma because the idea of rationing was unthinkable. Looks like that was wrong. Poor Oklahoma.
  • Mandatory Health Care
OK, so I have Blue Cross Blue Shield. If Universal Health Care comes into play, am I going to be forced to give up my BCBS in favor of Government Socialized Medicine? If so, I believe I have a multi-billion dollar case against the Obama Administration. I believe I can start by taking to over 100 Million from Obama that he "earned" from Freddi/Fannie. Especially if I believe I was forced by the Government to drop my better health care for a lesser effective system.
  • Socialist Health Coverage
The good news is, unlike the country, Oklahoma has elected a Republican Majority House, hopefully that will be enough to save us from Obamanation.
