This was priceless. I went up to Toledo, Oh for a job interview back in October. When I hit the 30 degree weather when I got off the plane, this born and raised Florida boy knew he wasn't going to take this position. But having being highly recommended to this person I was meeting/interviewing with (who was also the President and CEO of this small company), I certainly wanted to make a good impression. This was going to prove difficult.
He picked me up at the airport and we went to grab a quick lunch before we got to the office. As soon as we sat down, I started to feel the rumblings.
Now, as a side note, I am unfortunately notorious among my buddies for having an uncanny ability to clear out a room.
So all during lunch, I am squirming and clenching muscles I didn't know I had to restrain myself. After what felt like about three hours, our quick 20 minute lunch was finished and I didn't remember one thing that we had discussed. I was solely focused that whole time on getting to the men's room afterwards. So after excusing myself, I was able to get some much needed and very gratifying relief.
We continued on to their offices and I started to feel the rumbling pressure beginning to mount again. What had caused all this? I have no idea. I had eaten nothing irregular. But perhaps the Chinese food lunch we had just eaten was proving to be a bad idea. As we were touring the office, I was in such pain and consternation, I literally couldn't think straight. My mind was racing thinking of reasons to excuse myself. Problem was, I had just been in the men's room at the restaurant 30 minutes ago. So we continued around the office, meeting and greeting everyone in the office. Everyone.
Ultimately we end up in one man's small and enclosed office. He and the boss wanted to show me something on his computer. So we were leaning down and I was resting one hand on this man's desk, standing inches from him, staring at his computer screen. After the brief demonstration, the boss got up and was leaving the office. Being temporary distracted by the impressive display I had just seen, I temporarily forgot about my "pressure" issue, and when I stood up, that sudden movement was just the source of relief that pressure was looking for.
I ripped one, as badly as I could have done if I was trying, just inches from this person's face that I had met no more than 60 seconds ago.
I was stunned, and didn't know what to do. I really had no mental processes at all. Somehow out of my mouth came, "Well, nice to meet you!", and I turned and walked out.
What can I say?! What can one do in this situation?! The amazing part was that the boss had left the room just in time that he did not hear this, though he may have felt the reverberations, and we had a successful rest of the interview. He offered me the job. I asked to think about it, and eventually turned it down. But I can only imagine the office chatter that went around about my brief but quite distinguishing visit.
Hope you enjoy. Big fan and new Atlanta resident. That job interview went a little more smoothly.
