Working for one of the largest car rental companies here in the states I would see management run around like chickens with their heads cut off trying to find ways to motivate employees. What did they finally decide on? Fear! They would continuously change the goals for the call center employees, while , with their cheeriest face and biggest smile, tell the employees how great this was for them and if they don't reach these goals they will be fired. Then in a few weeks, they would change the goals again, and a few weeks later, again, and so on.
They never did seem to understand that the employees dont buy the smiling valley girl tone threats as being " great for you and make things easier".
Oh, they also made it so the employees can be fired at the drop of a hate, for things that the employees have no control over. If the computer system goes awry and their talk time is off, they can get fired. If a caller is mad at the rental branch, and thinks giving a 1 ( 1=lowest and only a highest a 5 will keep you from being fired) on the call survey about how the call center employee service was, they would say just try better?? If the manager talks on during a manager employee meeting and goes over the scheduled time period , it counts against your time adherence and you can get fired.
Of course they claim its all done by an great overseeing computer system an no one has the power to adjust for when these things happen. It was funny to see the turnover rate and lack of enthusiasm of employees there. Not really funny, but they seem to work hard at creating a nightmarish place to work in even though it is costing the company millions a year in loss productivity and reservations and repeat customers. Yup, we pick you up gimmick just ain't going to make up for the losses by the ignorant management there. Glad I'm not there anymore. Feel sorry for those who are.
