You are never truly free until you pay for it yourself. As long as someone gives you something, you owe them. My parents were very keen to get me off their dole as soon as I finished college and could work on my own.

Being free and clear of my parents, we could talk about many issues, with no fear of having something taken away. They weren't paying for me car, my apartment, or anything else. I felt no sense of entitlement, and they felt no lack of respect for things given.

Every time the government hands someone a check, it increases the sense of entitlement in the receiver, the sense of expected loyalty gratitude in the government, and the sense of resentment amongst the rest of us tax payers. That is not good, and why I think the founding fathers were very much against welfare. And please don't mistake welfare as being the same as charity.
