Jason, you are right. Like many other businesses, solo doctors and sometimes small groups like cash. As a physician, I know form personal experience. Checks can bounce, credit cards charge a premium and people can stop payments on either. Obviously, with cash and other self payment options you do not need to send out a claim and this further reduces adminstrative costs. I am also more sensitive to my patient's financial position when they are paying out of pocket. <br> In the future if health care rationing becomes intense, solo practitioners will be in the best position to negotiate self pay rates for patients and ironically, we may be able to contain costs through such a default free market system. The large health care corporations will probably have more obstacles in implementing self pay payment options.
