Actually, elements of the Japanese military was prepared to continue the war even AFTER the bombs were dropped and even attempted a coup to prevent the surrender.<br> <br> We had just suffered large numbers of casualties taking Iwo Jima & Okinawa. We had seen Okinawian civilians throw themselves over a cliff to avoid having to live under US occupation. At the time, everything pointed to a much worse situation when we invaded Japan proper. Truman's job was to prevent the loss of AMERICAN lives. He made the right decision -- he ended the war without Americans being killed in an invasion.
